@@Pete-z6e Let me guess you were a male synchronized swimmer in your youth or you have a daughter who's into it? Nobody watches it and it's not popular like it used to be unfortunately. Replace it
To me as a sort of yacht designer, surfer and swimmer this is really interesting. A combination of design, fitness, strength, skill, reaction time, morale and sheer luck. I wasn't going to watch it but I'm glad I did. Sport on the finest edge
Darrell Eastlake what a great call , this guy knew the sport . Made it an absolute spectacular. Gone are the days of commentators that shared plenty of beers with the athletes to learn the jargon and vibe . Miss you big Fella....
There was an Australian Day Carnival event at Freshwater Beach. The surf was freaking huge and I was watching from White waves the high rise units opposite the Hilton. The men’s division started and the surf was so big all the contestants sat in the shallows waiting for a break in the sets. All of a sudden they all started rowing for the horizon like man men , it was psycho as the sweeps had all screamed for their crew to put their backs into getting out, and they all did, went round the buoys and started to come back in but another set was on the horizon….
Somewhere you'll find a movie called ( I think) 'The History of Australian Surfing'. There's a scene on a Sydney Beach (Collaroy?) where a crew are out in 20ft plus surf and willing paddle into a monster drop and make it, almost. Carnage.
Oh my god I am from st.Petersburg Russia, fond of sailing and stuff But THAT WAS AMASING!!!!! This is a team work !!!!! Helmsmen are real masters of steering ...... bravo! And thanks I really loved it ))))
Strange ! I was actually talking about this sport to a mate today, which I referred to as something I watched years and years ago .. and have never looked at since. I don't even know why I mentioned it to my friend today. Suddenly it appeared on YT .. I didn't actually look for it either. better play the lottery tonight 😃
I just read “two years before the mast” about a sailors experience on the merchant tall ships off of California in the 1800s. And how they had to haul goods off and onto the shore in boats like these through the treacherous surf on a regular basis. I would expect the same thing happened off of Australia. I wonder if the sport stemmed from that experience.
You're close I think. As far as I'm aware, back before inflatable powerboats, rowboats like these were used in surf rescue, and for picking the survivors of shipwrecks out of the ocean when ships ran aground near the shore. Needless to say, ships don't tend to run aground in flat weather - and rescuing survivors usually involved rowing out into surf.
These men are surf lifesavers. Every coastal town in Australia has a Surf Lifesaving Club. They hold a range of competitions on the beaches and in the water.
Good race, and these guys go out in crazy, much worse conditions. I wonder if there is a surf boat wipe out video on UA-cam? Would be absolute carnage. It reminds me of how they select crew for the surf boat. 1. Line up candidate against a wall. 2. Throw bricks at them. 3. Anyone who dodges the bricks, is out. Imagine being smashed by oars and bodies and surf when it all goes wrong, as it inevitably does. Serious courage of anyone who goes out in these things.
@@jcproductions007 Me personally i love the place, its a very coastal town i always go and walk along the beach with the dogs and drive down to check if the surf is on, 5 minute drive from my house is the big boat ramp in to put my boat in for a fish over the weekend, easy drive up to mount kiera for the mx track as i also ride, if you feel like going out for a night wollongong is only a 10 minute drive or if you feel like going to the city its only an hour away. It depends what you are into i guess as everyone is different i live a pretty active lifestyle and it fits perfect for me but not everyone is going to agree with me :) i have lived there my whole life and did not know there was a zoo there :P
Hi Graeme, how are you going? Mate not sure if you can but do you have access to the 2000 U21 Aussie final? Can't find this anywhere and just about every other race is there🤔
Oh mighty UA-cam algorithm how hath thou graced us today?
The algorithm gave this one to me because I'm a kayaking fan that recently began binging olympic sailing.
Preeye harth mate
ARE YOU ENTERTAINED!!!
What a silly sport. I love it!

Darrell was such a great commentator his enthusiasm and ability to put you right in the action is legendary ....was best in the business hands down...
Yeah one of the best sports commentaror I have heard
My Mum used to warn me , if I didn’t behave she was going to send me to nsw with the rest of the common criminals.
The way of the world, the criminals were sent to Australia and the religious nutters sailed to America and what happened?
Props to the film crew back then 👍
It's a helmet cam, I believe
What an amazing sport! Love how the rowers run to the back of the boat when riding the wave in. It should be an Olympic sport.... For sure.
Those Aussies have damn good sport inventions. No frills, no gimmicks, just fun. Way better than the boring Olympics.
those guys are phenomally strong -thats one crazy sport
It looks like an Interesting sport but what language is the announcer speaking. I could not understand half of what he was saying.
English?

I thought it was mixed race. Didn't know ozzie men used to wear bikinis. But hey, what's more manlier than a man comfortable with his sexuality?
Ahahahaa they’re wearing what we call “Budgie Smugglers” here in Australia
Darryl Eastlake. I loved listening to him yell. 🇦🇺👍🍺
Daryl Eastake, what a legend! Grew up watching the surf boats training at my club Maroochydore SLSC and training in the Maroochydore River.
I hope he's still out their shrieking, great stuff 👍

The 'helmsman' is actually called a Sweep in surf boat racing. The role of the Sweep is to act as a rudder by sweeping the water with the long oar.
