  • Great bowling alley, great lanes! This was first time bowling on AMF 82-30 pinspotters! aka the first automatic pinsetter in the industry!
    These machines originated from a ABC Tournament held in Texas during 1957. It's quite a piece of bowling history! Check this place out if you're ever in the area!
    I do not own the music in this video.

    Always love seeing these old centres still operating with only minor upgrades

    I remember bowling my first ever mchenry county youth travel league here. All of us got a lecture on the history of the place which none of us teenagers cared about at the time. They have actuallt "upgraded" their masking units to ones 20 years older than what they used to have. Parts of the movie Groundhogs Day was filmed here. Truly a gem and a piece of history. Was a car dealership way way way back in the day. Have i mentioned your videos make me feel like im stepping in a time machine, to the best days of my life.

      I agree. A bowling alley in my city (West Seattle Bowl) had these pin setters until the pandemic, or at least the same masking units. They had the bowling alley’s logo in the triangle thing instead of the AMF logo, and were painted silver/metallic. They honestly looked super modern. During Covid, they got brand new Qubica-AMF pin setters with flat boring masking units. Luckily they still have free fall pins. Ball returns are under the lanes, with the modern Brunswick equipment that seems like 80% of bowling alleys use. Not sure what was there before.

    The AMF 8230 was the first pinsetter/pinspotter ever released on the public market. I believe that they came out in 1954 after much experimentation with other machines such as the vacuum controlled 8210 which was never publicly sold on the market. The only difference that these machines have from what they originally would’ve been like is at this particular center has retrofitted plastic 8270 style sweep bars to the sweep replacing the original steel bar sweeps that the machines would’ve had at install.

    • @PinDominator
      @PinDominator  2 роки тому +1

      I wish they had the original sweep bars. That would complete it! Perhaps the owner will find a few somewhere. :)

    There are other companies other than AMF and Brunswick that offer bowling pins. One of the other companies might have good wooden bowling pins.

  • @sjt66
    @sjt66 2 роки тому

    There’s a good video editing there, if you noticed you never see the pins drop in to the cups individually from the reflection on the lane. That gives the illusion that the pinsetter‘s are faster than they really are LOL. Many times after a strike, the sweep will sit there waiting for the table to come down to set the pins until all the cups are filled. The 8230s are slower than the 8270s. So they are probably around the same speed as the GSX

    • @PinDominator
      @PinDominator  2 роки тому +1

      That is true, these pinspotters were pretty quick regardless. The guy working there said that the pinwheel continues to collect pins even of the table was already loaded with pins. Unlike some 82-30s the wheel completely stops. These definitely aren't faster than the 8270s or 90s but faster than the gs-xs I've bowled on

    • @sjt66
      @sjt66 2 роки тому

      @@PinDominator that’s interesting because I always thought the wheel continue to move and collect and hold the pins until the table was ready to be set. It’s crazy not to let the wheel move LOL I’ve never bowled on the GSX machines because there’s only one recreational bowling alley inside our mall that has them now and I have not bowled there yet. They also have like four candlepin lanes too… I also love those masking units at your bowling alley, they are the same exact ones I grew up with as a kid from the mid to late 70s.

    • @PinDominator
      @PinDominator  2 роки тому

      @@sjt66 right this place has great masking units! The owner is planning on fixing the pin indicator lights which means I'll have to come back and record more clips!
      I'm not saying the gs-x sucks, but occasionally the machine will take forever when distributing pins on certain frames. Idk if it's a lack of pin in the machine or if it's the plc controlling the shark fin freaking out.
      I've always wanted to try candlepins. Other than Chicago's Southport lanes, I don't know another place in Illinois that has that type of bowling :(

      Some do and some don't. I think it's similar to how some 82-70s use the setting table as pin detection, whereas some use the camera. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that😅

    • @Bowler4Ever
      @Bowler4Ever 2 роки тому

      The thing is, wood pins don't last like they used to anymore. Twister pins are much more cost-effective nowadays. Wood lanes are also much more expensive to maintain and quality wood is extremely difficult to get and is even more expensive now. I agree, it definitely does suck, but people have to see it from the eyes of the proprietor and the mechanics.

    • @PinDominator
      @PinDominator  2 роки тому

      @@Bowler4Ever I get ya, I've always liked the idea and benefits of Twister pins, and I agree they are the better choice especially considering the quality of today's wooden pins. If Twister could only replicate the sound of wooden pins, then AMF and Brunswick might not get business for their pins lol

      @@Bowler4Ever Also the fact not all Bowlers love Wood Lanes. When i bowl on Wood Lanes at B3, they were terrible lol, not from maintenance but on how the ball reacts. My Youth League mate even said that their averages were low on Wood Lanes probably 140 or less unlike Synthetics at SM Bowling that we shot better scores nowadays.

    • @108CAM
      @108CAM 2 роки тому

      I noticed that the sweep bars aren't original as they have the newer AMF logo on them. The originals would have had 4 thinner bars painted to match the rest of the equipment and would have the AMF circle logo on a triangular plate in the middle of the sweep bar. I would say the original sweep bars were replaced as a result of becoming bent from balls hitting them while down.
