NEW 2021 Santa Cruz Bullit eMTB [170-millimeter Trail Eater Review]

  • Hot on the heels of some freshly updated Heckler eMTB offerings, the Santa Cruz Bullit eMTB comes firing out of the barrel, ready to appease those e-bikers looking for more. More what? Everything of course! With 170mm of travel front and rear, slacker geo, the new Shimano Steps EP8 motor and a larger battery, the Santa Cruz Bullit is truly built to shred. In our latest Dissected Series episode we take an in-depth first look at this new e-enduro bike and what it has to offer riders in the market.
    Built around the idea of “What goes up, loves coming down,” Santa Cruz Bicycles’ team wanted to make their biggest hitting eMTB that wasn’t just a one trick pony. While it is unapologetically aimed at taming the downs, it isn’t overly-built or overly slacked out to the point it’s not any fun when the trails aren’t vertical.

    Really like this. I’m a big fan of Shimano, so with the new updates (even though it’s not quite perfect), helps even more. When Bosch seems to have a bit of a problem with their lockring’s that can come loose (make sure the shop checks it!) and on the Giant’s, which have the worst electrics known to man, have junk cables (which aren’t waterproof) which also link up to their awful head units, I’ll take the Santa Cruz any day! All I need now, is a “spare” £8k.

    Too bad the whole ebike (MTB) industry is so incredibly anti-consumer. You can't buy frame only options, and you can't just upgrade your Shimano E8000 motor with an EP8. They use the same frame mounts, but you can't buy the motor alone. If your motor dies after the warranty expires, and are left with a frame that you can just throw away. You can't just buy a new motor. How is that environmentally or economically sane by any stretch? I know the motors are "tuned" (fancy way of saying "how it tilts") to the frame, but if it's possible for the factory via software to set it, it's possible for the consumer too if they know what they are doing. I feel the e-mtb market is just immature and too anti-consumer to actually be worth while at the moment. Sad really, because emtbs are so much fun, and opens up a lot of new ground to many people.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  3 роки тому +7

      Hey Gustav,
      Thanks for the comment and your input there. While we always try to position ourselves in the consumer's perspective since we truly value how hard people have to work and how much of that money get's spent on their passion for mountain bikes, we totally see where you are coming from!
      We even felt the same and have implored brands, "Why can't we just retrofit an older frame with the new battery for more capacity?! Why can't you put the new motor unit in the old frame?!" We get replies from smart folks in the brand who have a whole list of nuances that never cross our minds that seem so small, but could yet make a big difference.
      Does that mean we're happy about it? No. We understand the race for evolution is very fast and sometimes brands may put having the next best thing over having that thing fit in the same exact motor mounts as the previous generation, or improving battery sizing and technology so they're smaller and lighter, but then making aftermarket/upgrade models bigger just for the sake of having them fit in an older/larger sized frame.
      It's a tricky spot for sure, and while we as consumer would love the ability to upgrade, someone from an eMTB motor manufacture asked me, what kind of car I had. When I told him he said, has Ford made better motors/engines since your vehicle was released? I said absolutely yes! "Could you take your car to the dealership and have them drop that new motor into your vehicle?" I said not without some massive headaches and expenses as they're pretty different platforms, sizes etc.
      Granted it's a pretty big difference in comparison, but I don't think they're 100% anti-consumer,
      Selling a frame only option though... We're with you there! Let us build our own ebikes! haha. Although good luck finding parts in this day and age. You'd probably just be sitting on a frame until October. haha.
      Thanks for writing in.

      Don't worry there will be manufacturers supporting the idea. Bosch, Fazua, Panasonic, Giant, Brose. Yamaha just joining in the fun. So if Shimano does not want to support the idea, you got a lot more option upcoming in the market.

    • @geekane9462
      @geekane9462 3 роки тому +4

      I totally agree. The other glaring objection is the PRICE!!! I mean you can get a car, or cost more than a new Yamaha 250 dirt bike. And the dirt bike has way more suspension and parts and a motor. Where is the industry going when you pay almost $12,000!!!!! Still, its just a bike. I'm getting discouraged with the industry and about ready to give up on mtb and back to dirt bikes. But I guess as long as people are willing to pay these ridiculous prices, there will be bike companies like SC pricing their bikes stupid expensive.

    • @TheLoamWolf

      At 5'9" you could probably get away with either depending on your personal preference for bike fit as well as local terrain. If it's high speed and wide open, maybe sizing up will give more confidence. If you ride tighter, technical trails, perhaps a medium will be more responsive and fun. We tend to prefer bikes that are not overly long.
      Thanks and happy hunting!

      @@TheLoamWolf surely, pedaling seated a 591mm ett would feel extra cramped; on the other hand, 475mm of reach is a bit long for a 5'8-5'9. My 455 seems to work great(maybe 5 mm longer..maybe). The problem with SC is that they always make the M size just a little too small and the L size just a little too big for a person of 170-175 cm in height.

    Just fit a Lift mtb kit to an enduro bike of your choice...all the heavy mass benefits of e bikes on suspension with no restricted nonsense and warranty to worry about and any frame of your choice as long as the motor fits. These ebikes are a total rip off not being able to upgrade the motors and get replacements after warranty or if you buy used, you have no warranty. No point paying such a premium for a ready built e bike with so many restrictions when for £1000 you can fit a kit with a far more powerful motor and batteries of your choice.

      @TheLoamWolf  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks for the comment Vicarious. When it comes time to conduct our long term and detailed review, that very well may be a topic we'll address. Since our Dissected Seires wasn't/isn't mean to be a product review but rather an introduction to new products we only get a couple weeks before launch, we focus more on what the product features are, what it has, offers and is intended to do.
      On top of that, we've realized that price and absurdity are quite honestly irrelevant for "us passionate mountain bikers" to talk on. If this bike cost $3,000 we would still get a whole list of comments saying, BUDGET?! Must be nice! I've only got $1,800 to spend. Haha. And, even if we do think the price is high, we're 99% sure this bike will be sold out by the end of the week, if it's not already, so the fact you and our team thinks it should be less, for whatever arbitrary reason we may have, the market says otherwise...
      Thanks again for writing in though.

      @@TheLoamWolf Considering price is a major factor in the potential purchase of goods, you can hardly say you've "dissected" a product if you don't even mention the cost. But by ignoring it, then pontificating about your reasons for ignoring it, you're only fueling the machine even further. It very well may "sell out" because channels like yours and other media outlets gloss over the anti consumer practices of companies like SC and Specialized, and drum up FOMO in the community. You're doing a disservice to everyone, no doubt to ensure you still get your "Zoom" meetings and free test bikes. Priorities right?!
