The divers rating on the dial is typically more than about depth though. Many brands only put that on the dial if it meets or exceeds the ISO 6425 standards, which includes a 30 hour submersion rest, condensation test, depth rating test plus 25% safety margin, temperature tests, rate tests, antimagnetic tests and a test to make sure the strap can support 45lbs without breaking. It's quite rigorous. Also, all ISO watches are tested at the end of the line, not just a randomly selected example as in normal QC.
It is very big, but I think it’s part of its charm. It’s pure utility and is extremely legible because of its size. I prefer field watches generally, but I love wearing the big fat Duro.
I just picked up the Casio Duro and the Casio Step Tracker (2 watch package) for $99 CAD (about $71USD) from Costco in Canada. The Duro is not my grail watch, but a great beater watch that I can go swimming with.
The rotating bezel actually is the most useful feature of any watch. Using it to time all sorts of events and tasks make it super useful. Sometimes a diver is the only equipment i have ease of access to.
Nice list of watches Dave. I'm a big Orient and Seiko fanboy and have a Zelos Swordfish 300m diver. I probably would have included some of the better Ali Express brands that are extremely competitively priced and high quality epitomized by a Cronos bronze 1000m diver that survived a pressure test beyond that and only stopped working at 3000m, then started working again when the pressure dropped! There are some options in that area that possibly are better value and should not be ignored.
@@johnhanlon6061 Ok thanks 👍 I’ve been looking at the BN0150 but I like the look of yours too, nice bracelet and looks more versatile (like it would look better with smart dress). Merry Christmas 🎄
I really like the Promaster Series of Citizen because you get a certified diver (even though you probably don't need it) with, in the version I own, a sapphire crystal glass for 250€. Of course there are so many options to chose from but I do like the history the Promaster has with the italian navy :)
This is a great primer on the subject! If I ever encounter any questions in the watch groups I'm in about a 'beginner's guide to dive watches' -this is where I would direct them. The WISE looked phenomenal here!
This video reminded me of those 1980s sitcom "clip show" episodes where the plot plays as a series of flashbacks stringing together clips from previous episodes. It was great to see some of the great dive watches you've previously featured on the channel and it reminded me how much much I like that YEMA Navygraf Marine Nationale.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Dive watches are the SUVs of the watch world. They may not be the most interesting to talk about, but it's what most people use as a daily driver.
I have the RZE Endeavour and really like it. Very light, comfy and compact so it fits my 6 1/4 inch wrist nicely. I believe the movement in the no-date version is the NH38 which has no date function i.e. there is no ghost date position when you pull out the crown.
Chronographs are my favorite. I really like the feeling that my watch does something in addition to telling the time and chronographs are one of the most tactile ways of that.
For non-divers, one the most beneficial aspects of the ISO 6425 certification is the high level of shock resistance -- especially if it's an automatic.
I have a few divers. Most expensive being Omega seamaster from 1998, to cheapest Steel Dive Tuna. The one that gets the most wear is my Orient M Force Beast. It has it all, dial colour is stunning, really easy to read, lume that lasts forever, and power indicator. It does my head in why Seiko doesn't use sapphire? When my Chinese Steeldive gets sapphire and is cheapest one l own.
Seiko Divers….are a favorite. Omega makes some good ones too, but a little pricey for a hobby. However, I have one thats been in service for 22 years. So, maybe not too expensive, but that 5 year service NEVER goes away ($750 a pop). Whereas a new Seiko movement every 10-15 years is WAY cheaper. That Alpinist on your tee shirt is also a favorite of mine! I just love the new 70 hour power reserves on the Seiko’s.
I have the SWC and the Endeavor, both more or less specced as shown here. I have the bracelet for my SWC but I find it difficult to get that one comfortable, so I mostly wear it on the rubber strap instead (also much easier to dry after a swim).
Great review. I have two affordable dive watches in my (mostly) affordable collection: The RZE Endeavor and a D5 Vaer. Pacific. The Vaer may be my favorite watch. I keep looking at the Wise Damascus AD8 and am on the mailing list for when Halios releases its next updated Fairwind. But I am also tempted by Lorier's soon the be released Zephyr dress watch and I think my wife will kill me if I buy more than one more watch this year.
Best afforadble iso rated diver is the citizen NY0085-86 or the eco drive BN0151, Citizen is killing it in affordable diver’s, was a big seiko fan but Citizen took it’s place
The Seiko King Samurai does have a saphire crystal. I have the prospex Black Series Night Vision limited edition shown in your video with Seiko Lumibrite that seems to glow even during the day. It's an incredible watch for the money!
The best diver I own is the Tudor BB58 in black. I also got the Timex Q reissue with the fanta bezel, Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze and Yema Superman. I wear the Timex for work and the Tudor has the most wrist time.
I've always liked the Citizen Promaster Automatic diver (the Ecodrive diver is cool too). It wears smaller than the specs would indicate and it's ISO rated at a reasonable price. It's like the SKX used to be, only better.
I have a Citizen Promaster Divers 300m eco-drive (bn0085-01e). Great watch, no complaints at all and the accuracy is ridiculous - on the wrist is accurate to within a second after 4 months and off wrist it gains 2 seconds per month.
I prefer pilot or field watches, especially without a date complication. My favorite diver I own is the Citizen Promaster Dive for its accuracy, looks and solar.
I am a minimalist kinda guy, but so difficult to capture all i like in one neat package. Dress watches are really nice to have.... I have none yet 😄 feeling i like green... I currently have a "deep sea" submariner homage, white tritium field, black flieger, and a casio digital. Most watches i love are out of my price range...
Nice review. I like Seiko Dive watches. I also like a brand called Deep Blue Precision Divers. I have a larger wrist and their watches are hard to beat on price, value and quality. With their promo codes on some of their models and the very reasonable $149 dollars for a real nice diver's watch they are hard to beat. I would like to see you review the brand. 3/14/23.
I would really love this series to extend to other kinds of watches. I feel like the market for affordable field watches is very cluttered especially with some of the old seikos still being available. Im still on the quest to find an affordable pilots or fieldswatch with a day-date compliction and a sapphire crystal. I would love some suggestions from your side.

Depending where you are in the world, a cheap or expensive dive watch can get you robbed. A field watch is less eye candy especially budget quartz field watches.
I’d like to throw the Citizen NY0040 range of auto divers in the mix. They’re a great watch, ISO certified and even have the pedigree of being used by the Marina Millitare.
For every Sammy fan there is at least one Turtle fan :-) I think it's worth mentioning LIW - Marc mostly produces homages, but all the Islanders are well specced and have brilliant follow-up service if needed. Great value. Also super easy to get mod parts for people who want to DIY.

I think your odds of getting 10 years put of a Mako 3 would be pretty good as long as you take good care of it. You'll likely need to get the movement serviced by then, which would be your main concern. The Mako 3 has great water resistance so you don't have to worry about getting it wet. I would think just rinsing it off with clean fresh water regularly should keep the salt deposits at bay.

Im sorry for having to correct you, but the water resistance rating on most watched has NOTHING to do with the depth to which a watch could be taken. It's rather a pressure rating indicating the pressure that water hitting(!) the seals at the watch crown, pushers, glass and bottom can have before water ingress is going to happen. If only for the price, it's difficult to ignore the Casio Duro in the affordable diver category. Reputable brand and a list of strong specs for U$60.
Plus, if needs must-ed, you could actually go diving with it. For $60.
To me it was easy to ignore at an unwearable 44 mm. I have yet to see a wrist shot where it looks natural.
