What are your favourite cooperative board games?
Let us know!
Great video as usual. Now, let's list some games not mentioned :)
- Spirit Island
- Now Boarding
- Magic Maze
- Captain Sonar (coop within team)
I love LOTR: Journeys in Middle Earth, LOTR: LCG, and original LOTR (Knizia). Horrified is also fun, several in the Pandemic world, Viticulture World, Groundhog Day and a few you guys listed (we like cooperative games). My all time favorite though is Legends of Andor🔥
Marvel United is a great one!
Pandemic Iberia, Arkham Horror LCG, The Crew
My favorite games are co-op / solo.
- Marvel Champions
- Too Many Bones
- Spirit Island
-Arkham Horror LCG
- Bullet
Where is Carlo’s favorite game Magic Maze? 😢
Yeah, I was shocked it wasn't on his list!
@@candle8389 I think he is trying not to flood all the lists with it. Because if he were to be honest with himself, it would be all 10 entries on this list.
spoilers
Just recently picked up The Crew, and have played the first 10 mission with my wife so far and we are loving it! How much the game changes each time with the objectives and the commander. I can't wait to get the second one after we get through all the missions!
The way I artificially "expanded" So Clover was to buy an extra copy, but only use one set of the cards.
Interesting! Maybe we'll try that with a 2nd copy.
I was pleasantly surprised by a little gem called Hanabi (Japanese for fireworks). It's a coop card game where the cards represent fireworks with different colors and values, and the objective is to make complete sets of each value of each color. The fun twist is that you must hold your cards backwards, so you don't get to see your own cards, but everybody else does. Every turn you either give somebody a hint about their cards, play a card or discard one. Over time it becomes trickier to remember which cards you have had hints about so the suspense builds. Replayability is high because you're working towards a high (perfect) score. A must try.
Hanabi is great! Unfortunately the only time I've played it IN PERSON was with a group where there was a bit of bending the rules to hint at the cards, which ruined it for me. I recently tried it again on BGA and I really appreciate how the game works, but I'm hoping to play it in person again with the right group some day. It has some similarities to The Crew which I LOVE.
- Carlo
Hanabi is sooooo good. Has a lot of depth too, with finesse clues and all other things you can do to add nuances. The black powder expansion is great too
@@hugocruz2439 oh cool I didn't know there is an expansion
@@woega is more like a mini expansion, just adds the black suit that you can't hint the color, you just can hint the number. I thought it wouldn't work out, but it does surprisingly well
Love this topic! Played/own most of your selections and cannot fault any of your picks! My top three would be The Crew (both), Gloomhaven, and Legendary (with lots of expansions). Some honorable mentions not in your list are Eldritch Horror, Horrified, Pandemic the Cure with Experimental Meds, FlashPoint, Escape Zombie City, Spirit Island and Sentinels of the Multiverse.
Thanks, Graem! The only one we've tried from the ones you've mentioned is Spirit Island, and we need to revisit that one day on a tougher difficulty to see if it clicks with us more. Also really curious to try Sentinels one day, as well as Horrified and Eldritch Horror.
- Carlo
If I were to pick my top 5:
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (no other game gives me as strong sense of cooperation as this one - you can deckbuild only to help your mate if you want ;))
2. Space Hulk: Death Angel (this game absolutely killed Ghost Stories for me)
3. Spirit Island
4. Arkham Horror: The Card Game
5. Robinson Crusoe
Great choices! Even though I haven't played LotR: The Card Game, I've played enough Arkham Horror LCG and Marvel Champions to understand the DNA and the appeal of it. I'd love to try it one day, even if I likely won't actually get into it long term.
We love both versions of the The Crew. Just One is fun even with our younger family members. Commissioned is also a favorite co-op that we like playing.
I love the loop! It's such a good game. Spirit island is my number one pick, I greatly recommend Flashpoint fire rescue. Detective modern crime series was so novel and clever.
I've actually wanted to play Detective for a while, eager to see if I like it! -Dylann
Hey Dylan I do play that’s clover with larger groups. Just split into teams and then the teams do the score rather than individuals.
I haven't really delved into the realm of cooperative games. I'm keen to try Horrified. I've got The Crew 2 and my son and daughter in law are coming to visit this weekend, so maybe that's one to break out. I gave them The Crew 1 for Christmas, last year, but I don't think they've played it. Actually, I had to give them my copy which had been opened but never played. That's because I ordered a copy to give to them and when it came time to do so, I couldn't find it. Somewhere in this house there remains a lost, unopened copy of The Crew 1. Loved the video, as always
Does it bother anyone else when a game that someone has only played once makes their top ten favorite of a genre? I understand being excited about a game after 1 play but can't see allowing a one of play make a top 10
Totally agree 👍
All seem like good picks! I wish you explained the gameplay of the games a bit more first though, because some of them I hadn't played or even seen them previously (you did explain some, but some the description of how to play was a bit small, so if you hadn't played it you wouldn't know how the gameplay works).
Sitenote: I think gloomhaven's initiative secrecy rule is a bit stupid. We just announced "I'm going 67; okay, I'll use me 52" etc. because the rule as it is is poor, and as you said you can get down to the exact number without announcing it if you game the system properly, but that just takes longer and is annoying to do, so you may as well announce your number. I think the rule should be "you can announce that you are going very fast, fast, moderately paced, slowly, very slowly.
Very fast = 0-20
Fast = 21-40
Moderately paced = 41-60
Slowly = 61-80
Very slowly = 81-99
And you make it so you can't go into any more detail than that. That way it's quicker, there is still some times where people might accidentally go out of the order they wanted to, but it's predominantly announced/considered. But rules need to be specific like that. Shadows Over Camelot has this same problem with its rules where people very quickly find out ways to say what number theyre playing in a location without saying the number itself, they again should specify which specific terms you're allowed to say.
Last Bastion gameplay is an improvement on Ghost Stories.
Some say the theme of Last Bastion is worse, but I think it's very strong.
Right on, sounds like we really need to try it out then.
1. Ghost stories
2. Arkham Horror 2nd edition
3. Mansions of Madness 2nd edition
4. Power Rangers heroes of the grid
5. Harry Potter Hogwarts Battles
I absolutely LOVE Ghost Stories. You've got to try the White Moon expansion! I was pretty disappointed in Last Bastion. It felt like the bulk of the changes made it much easier and also the theme is much weaker.
That's a shame. Hoping to try White Moon now, I didn't even think about expansions since we were getting absolutely crushed every time in the base game already, haha.

Personally XCOM is still easily my fav co-op game. The assymetrical roles, the time-pressured frantic-ness of the gameplay, the multiple areas you are trying to manage, the push your luck element is fantastic; the app pushing things along so there aren't slow patches, and no alpha gaming is really possible, while still having patches of calm to debrief. Just heaps of fun.
I really need to play Project Elite to see if it gives me the same feels as XCOM.
The Crew and Spirit Island are probably my other fav co-ops personally. Ghost Stories and Pandemic (I need to play Legacy and Iberia still) are also favs.
I'd love to try XCOM one day, it sounds great.

Legendary Encounters Alien is my favorite. That nerve of having a chest burster in you deck, so fun! I also own Legendary Encounter Predator which is cool cause you can play as the humans or as the Predator and you could combine with Alien, I have legendary James Bond and Marvel. Unlike the encounter ones the cards are face up when they come out and do not end in a battle area. They get away and get discarded. But if too many get away you lose the game. You also can't die in the regular over the legendary.
Right on! I actually recently saw they're making Legendary Encounters: The Matrix next, I definitely want to try that.
@AllYouCanBoard OMG!! Had not heard that. But I am in!
Do any of these games (or others) play the best at 2? Thanks for the advice!
I've very picky about cooperative games. When I like them, I *really* like them but there are a great many popular co-ops that I don't like much at all (Pandemic, The Crew, Gloomhaven, etc.). Here is my personal list:
10) Gears of War
9) Forbidden Desert
8) Shadowrun: Crossfire
7) Horrified
6) Samurai Spirit
5) Ghost Stories
4) Mansions of Madness 2E
3) Warhammer Quest: Adventure Card Game
2) Marvel United
1) Marvel Champions
I'm just getting into AH LCG. Gimme your stuff lol!
Haha, I really need to try Dylann's copy, then maybe it'll be up for grabs :P
- Carlo
To answer Carlo's question about Legendary.
Alien is probably the best one. That seems to be the popular concensus. However, I think the others are worth picking up as well. There are a number of great expansions out there. My only complaint is that, some of the card abilities, from one expansion to the next, feel a little samey. So even if your playing with different characters, there's still a small level of repetitivness. So not every expansion is worth bying. But that's just my opinion. It's still a really fun game. And there are enough variants that replayablity is pretty high. Worth playing at least. And owning for the better expansions like Alien. 👍
Spirit Island, Gloomhaven, Eldritch Horror, Arkham LCG (You don't have to buy all of it to enjoy it! I play with a friend's cards so that's easy for me).
There's others I'd play but not that I would seek out. (Marvel and LotR I prefer solo)
Pandemic: Iberia has been re-release and is now "Iberia - Pandemic System" but is exactly the same as the first collectors version.
Interesting! I guess my "limited collectors edition" isn't quite as "limited" as I once thought, hehe. Oh well. If it means more copies get made and more people get to play it then that's great.
Agree with Iberia!!!! It’s the only Pandemic (besides Legacy) that I’m always down to play
I still need to try one of the Pandemic Legacy games one day. But for now, absolutely, Iberia is the way to go.
Oh, it’s totally worth your time. So much fun!
My favorite is Adventure Games: The Dungeon 🔝
Co-op games are the devil's work!
for my family it's marvel united & horrified.
I reaaally like the mechanic of Just One, but not a single group (or myself) wanted to play more than the first time due to the lack of goal. Not competitive, and there's no win/lose condition either. Quite sad.
Exactly the same thing goes for So Clover
Marvel united, zombicide undead or alive, cthulhu death may die but my number one will always be a pandemic game🥰
I most enjoy heavier co-ops that are good solo, but usually prefer to play them specifically at 2, MAYBE 3 (Robinson Crusoe, Jaws of the Lion, Atlantis Rising, recently Spirit Island). I’d be particularly interested to hear your thoughts on Atlantis Rising if you ever play it.
"I've only seen the first Alien" ... you need to watch Aliens.
no marvel united? :o
Haven't played it!
spirit island done
The crew, both versions, are great games. Can we discuss just how comically bad the story writing and plot is!?! It has no bearing on the enjoyment of the game, but it is just aweful. We created more fun with the story by either 1) reading a sentence and pausing before the final word in the sentence to give people a chance to guess at what it might be or 2) ending every sentence with “in bed”. Way more laughs when you read the story this way.
I had a slightly better experience because my brother-in-law was reading them out in a very over-the-top kind of way. I think if you approach it expecting some really good story or to be immersed in the theme you'll be disappointed, but I think having it there is harmless because you can skip it if you don't care for it, or you can put your own twist on it like you or my brother-in-law have.
- Carlo
Whats the story about all the first date games? Dylan is talking about first date games since the start of your channel, is he still dating:-))
Who is Braden?
Braiden is one of our closest friends and a longtime supporter of the channel. He also appeared on (and contributed to in a massive way) our 24-hour charity livestream for mental health which we did in May.
@@AllYouCanBoard Oh, I missed that. Thanks.
Crew 2 is just _so_ good. I thought Crew 1 was basically perfect, and it's impressive how much better the sequel feels.
Surprised that Spirit Island isn't on this list! Infinitely replayable, and doesn't have the alpha gamer problem. My favorite co-op and solo game.
Yeah we used to own Spirit Island and have talked a few times how it's one of the more popular games out there that didn't seem to land with us but lands with almost everyone else lol. We want to revisit it at some point for sure, there were things I really, really liked about it still. - Dylann
Love MicroMacro, The Crew, Decorum, and Codenames Duet! Codenames Duet is by far our most played game. When we finish a game, we'll flip the cards (because they are two-sided) and start another game right away. Cooperative games are good for us, because I'm not trying to destroy my wife. Or worse, getting destroyed by her. I like the idea of posting pictures of So Clover clues for the internet. Now I have to get it!
Gloomhaven
Marvel Champions
Marvel Zombies
Mechs V minions
The Crew
What are your opinion of Last Bastion (the reimplementation of Ghost Stories)? It's the only one of the two I can get a hold of for a reasonable cost.
I haven't played that version yet!
