Was so much fun! Thank you for having me on your channel Tauri ☺️🤘
I subscribed to your channel. Keep it up 👍
@@frank1963 Massively appreciate the support and i'm sure myself & Tauri will be doing some more collabs
I used to mainly listen to hard rock / heavy, but I also consider myself I'm a Nightwish Fan, aswell as several heavier Bands like, Machine Head, Arch Enemy etc. But most likely not as heavy as you go.
I think the operatic style of Singing, in some ways are just as Growling, it takes time to get used to and to really appreciate, of course some people will never get into some of it, different taste etc. 10 years ago I didn't think I would ever like growling or Operatic, today I can enjoy both but I'm not sure either will ever be "my favorite" style. But I think its important from time to time to challenge ourself and give something new / different a chance.
Thank you for joining, I had so much fun!!
I saw them perfom this in October, live. It was utterly wild. When Simone is onstage, you're in the presence of a red-haired metal angel. Her power is extraordinary.
They were amazing on tour this past fall! \m/
Epica is like Nightwish for adults. 🤘🖤🤘
Well said, I concur 🌀🌀🌀👍👍👍
Absolutely! 🤟
I'm 53 and like both 🤷
Best comment 🤣
As a huge fan of both, such an immature comment.
I love EPICA Tauri too there music beautiful
EPICA is Beautiful Metal!!!!
My favourite band ever, also lots of merch from their cd releases. advantage of living in the Netherlands;-) 🤘😎🤘
"Open your eyes, we are not in paradise, how can't you see? this stess is killing me!.Furfill your dreams"
Good reaction. Welcome to Epica. For Epica at their heaviest check out Essence of Silence official live. For a power ballad, chasing the dragon at retrospect live 2013 with full orchestra and choir. For ultimate light and dark contrast, The Skeleton Key Omega Alive.
My suspicion is that the issue that many people have with female operatic style vocals is that they can be very shrill. Simone is able to maintain a warm, smooth tone even when she sings high notes so it is more relaxing to listen to.
Yes, I can see that, but you are right, there is a richness to her tone shich never get’s too shrill. What has really developed, as the years have gone by, has been her mix voice which is so full now.
One of my favorietes to
Dude has about 25 more kick ass songs EPICA an amazing band
I'd best get planning
When you think of Symphonic Metal as a spectrum, then Nightwish is at the Symphonic end, while Epica is at the Metal end.
Great comment. So many Epica fans who put down Nightwish. I’m a huge fan of both, for the reasons of what both offer. Don’t understand the animosity, they are both amazing for their own reasons.
Two great reactors in one video 🔥
Talking about band members doing growls: I once saw a video of Ariën (drummer) doing a part of the growls on Kingdom of Heaven part 1 while drumming, it was amazing.
We need a link so badly…
@@cranboogie I just found the link but if I click on it, it says "this video is private" :(
I found the full show, at 26:14 Ariën begins with the growls.

@@cranboogie You're welcome!! Happy new year! 🎆
Joooyce! 3,5 weeks to go! Times flying!
This will be a rollercoaster!!
Now imagine the 2 preceding hours!! 😛
He should hear the new Omega Cd 💿!!!!!
👀
Simone start her singing by Epica with 17years now she is 39years and one of the best sopranos in Metall 🤘
That was a great collab reaction to one of the very best symphonic bands showing every last bit of their range. I really dig FYM's no bs reaction style and of course I love Epica. Also thank you both for introducing me to Lycanthrope on his channel.👍🤘( Be looking for a reaction to "Built on Glass" on Old Skule's channel it's my monthly pick. I like it that much)
Thank you once again dude 🤘
I think it's funny how to some people is easier to get used to harsh vocals than to operatic vocals, I know I was one of them people, I've been listening to rock and metal for a while but just recently I started really appreciating symphonic metal
Yeah you would think it would be the other way around. Think the first time I ever heard anything in this genre was years ago when I saw a live video of within temptation - ice queen. That was a banger too 😁
@@FYMPRODUCTIONSMEDIA well I've known of this genre and I've heard of bands like Epica, Nightwish etc but I just never gave them a chance till I heard The Skeleton Key by Epica
What an awesome collaboration you both did a great job
Thank you for watching ☺️🤘
Thank you Breeds!!
One of my favorite songs by Epica, such a great live performance as well. Also love how Tauri is just singing along almost the entire song haha 🤘
I absolutely love both Nightwish and Epica (and Unleash the Archers for that matter)!! I have seen Epica 3 times and only recently did they play Consign for my live experience - and man it was amazing!! Tuomas is the metal Mozart, but... Mark Jansen can create some insanely awesome and complex songs like this as well!!!
"I think i'm going to need to ease into that a bit th-" "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
A lot of the issue people have with opera is the dated (17th-19th century) composition and the overuse of vibrato and seeking loudness over expression.
None of which is an issue with Epica or Simone. She has a mild intentional and expressive vibrato, her expression rivals Sharon Den Adel, Dolly Parton, Sinead O'Connor or Chiara Tricarico, and she uses the power of the microphone to keep volume levelled to the band regardless of her own volume. And these symphonic through-composed long pieces are 21st century music incorporating everything learned in the 20th century in all genres.
It can actually be hard to process on first hearing, this track and Nightwish Ghost Love Score both take a few listens to get to know. And you hear new things in both even after half a dozen listens.
How many people actually notice Coen throwing his keyboard across the stage…. several times…
literally never even spotted that
@@FYMPRODUCTIONSMEDIA There is another performance where he doesn’t make it across the stage on time - he and the guitarist are having a good laugh, looking down at his keyboard, below the stage!
This is probably the best song you could use to introduce Epica to a metalhead, good job!
Kingdom of Heaven pt. 1 would be a great one to follow, or if prefering something shorter Universal Death Squad could be as well
Depends Damian
I think for most people you better start with a song that is not so heavy.
On the other hand this song has indeed almost everything.
Grunt
Simone 2 different voicemail
Great Guitar playing
Not to forget the drum
Obviously ive only heard this one but I thought it was a quality introduction!
@@bertwinblok9524 yeah but I mean for acquainted metalheads lol
There's no such thing as being to short for a moshpit, I'm 160cm short and weight 45kg, I'm always in the pit at metal shows, with everyone's elbows hitting my head
Why not send him the link from Design your own Universe or a few ballads as well Tauri.
P.s. whats your favourite Epica ballad?
I've had a few reccomendations from Tauri so some more will be coming on my channel 😁🤘
Thanks for watching
Oh goodness, that's so hard to answer, I do love Tides of Time, Twin Flames, Rivers and so many more haha!
@@TauriReacts Tides of Time is the best ballad. Too bad there is not a good live version on You Tube.
I think that the song is too difficult to sing for Simone live.
Once upon a Nightmare is also a beautifull song but then I prefer the version with Isaac on the Guitar.
Oh! Nightwish is not heavy enough? Try Master Passion Greed.
Still not as heavy
@@RandallHidalgoS21allas96 Yet still heavy
Ha ha. Try “Ascension” by Epica 😂
No
Tauri as always you look stunning,I adore everything about you,I engoy whatching you,you bringing happyness into my life, thank you and happy new year♥️😇♥️🤩♥️😍♥️🤗
Welcome to the world of Epica my friend !
(and one day you will visit us in tha Low Countries)
Great reactions guys. Although Consign to Oblivion is often recommended to introduce Epica I think it really depends on the new listeners background. FYM's musical interests make this a great first song for him. I tend to recommend Unleashed from the Retrospect concert unless they are into heavier music and then I go with Essence of Silence live from Brussels but good call Tauri. Perfect intro for him. My one negative about this song is that Simone kind of disappears in the second half of the song. Part of the reason I like the other two songs for newbies is because you get more Simone. In any case great reaction guys!
Saw the live stream in real time of their 20th anniversary concert which was fantastic (great audio and video), including performing lots of their early stuff as opening act Sahara Dust. Then saw them live in person a couple of weeks later in Boston with Sabaton which was fantastic. Might be time to introduce him to MaYan, even heavier collaboration founded by Mark Jansen the founder and male singer of Epica.
Simone Simons started singing lessons at 13, on the recommendation of her school's music teacher. She auditioned for a role in the annual school musical, and although she didn't get the role, the music teacher liked her voice so much that she rewrote the musical so that Simone could sing a song!
She did a couple of years of pop singing lessons, and then six years of classical. She switched to classical after hearing Nightwish's second album Oceanborn. She said that the soprano vocals combined with power metal seemed "right" to her (as it did to a lot of other people, including me). She had a great-aunt who was a classical singing teacher, and who said that she didn't think Simone was quite ready--but she did it anyway, because apparently no one ever says no to Simone Simons. Her parents didn't even say no when she decided to quit high school to tour with her band!
Epica became successful very quickly, but Simone continued to do workshops on singing techniques (belting, etc) when she could fit into Epica's touring schedule, because she wanted to keep improving and trying new things. She's said that she still loves the sound of classical vocals, but would find singing in the same style all the time boring.
Re: the way the band has fun on stage together and how there don't seem to be any ego issues with some people wanting to show off or hog the spotlight, I think that's the result of a conscious effort by Mark Jansen to only include people who are easygoing and don't have ego issues. Getting kicked out of After Forever was very painful for him, and he wanted to make sure that he didn't put anyone else through that. So Epica is run like a democracy where everyone has an equal voice, and even his breakup with Simone didn't affect the band.
It's not so evident in this video, but there's a lot of touching between the band members onstage, and not just between Simone and the guys. I think the character of the people shows and that's one of the things that makes their fans feel so loyal.
13:26. How many listeners catch the significance……
me.. lol..vive la France...
That was fun Thank you Tauri.
I subscribed to his channel
Thank you Frank
I'm sorry, first Epica is a great band, but there's one big downside to them, which is the growling. I just can't stand it, if it would've been used in a way it adds something to a song, I could live with it. Here however he's growling just to growl, it absolutely doesn't add anything new to a song which in itself is a great song. Let me put it differently; the heavyness of the instruments is great in itself, so you don't need to add the growling. Maybe instead of growling, the guy might just sing those parts in a normal rock vocal, it sure would sound a lot nicer (so we could actually understand what he's singin'). Cuz right now I'm losing the story of the song, just because of that screaming, as it sure adds to the (unfairful) stigma metal music has to the masses; "screaming guys with no depth at all". We all know better, metal is so much more then that. That's my honest reaction to this one, and most of the Epica songs. They are all great tracks, but the unnecessary growling ruins it for me.
Well I and all of Epica's fan base love Mark's growls, they add a nice contrast... but if it's something you're not used to then I can see why you wouldn't enjoy it. Plus personal preference and all of that. There are also SO many Epica songs where Mark isn't featured doing his harsh vocals, Unchain Utopia is a favourite of mine, you should check it out!
I can see why you feel like that, but to me it's what elevated the band above Nightwish for example. But be boring if we all liked the same thing huh?
Loooove Mark's growls! He became better and better too just like Simone 😍
Also got to say 20 years ago I wasn’t sure on growls and then Opeth sold me. I generally don’t like bands that only growl, but if there is a lot of melody and or clean singing to offset it, then I live the contrast.
Just so don’t agree. It is what makes the song, the contrast to Simone, against the metal music backdrop. It’s what works.
