  • I have read that dragon fruit plants can live long (30 to 40 years) so choose materials for your trellis system that will last long as well. Hopefully this video will help you in choosing the best type of tire. Heavier tires (cruiser bike) will probably last longer than lighter tires (sport bike). Newer tires will probably last longer than older/used tires. You can get these tires from tire recyclers for about $3 each. You can probably get the tires cheaper or even free if you find a smaller bike tire shop. They pay tire recyclers to disposed of the used tires for them. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

    what are your thoughts about water stagnating in the tire and growing mosquitoes? do you drill drain holes in the sidewall?

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  6 років тому +2

      E C that's a good idea drilling holes on the bottom portion of the tire for drainage to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. Cheers.

    Have you had any problems with rats living in the tire void? Any thoughts about a material to fill it with? Thanks! Scott

    Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I've just started with dragon fruits. I built my first trellis but it was out of wood. This is a nice idea but I'm not physically able to work with heavy materials. I'd love to find something durable but light for my plants.

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  6 років тому +1

      Thagirion9 I think wood is fine more so if the wood is of the hardwood type. One of the viewers successfully used treated wood which would definitely last longer although I personally would not use because of the chemicals in them. I've seen posts made of PVC piping wrapped in burlap too. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

      @@sackboymahalo I am using a long star picket with a 90mm stormwater pipe put over the top of it. The starpicket is sunk well down into the ground. I then have the rebar cross-wise through the stormwater pipe and then the tyre on that. I have a cap over the end of the stormwater pipe. You could put rope or burlap over the pvc pipe, I hadn't thought of that. Is the burlap able to stand up to the constant sun exposure.

      Cathie Galbraith I have 3 rebars that are originating from the center post that I hang the tires to. I have a video titled "How to attach the tire on the 3 rebars as top support for dragon fruit tellis/post (viewer request)". I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

      Hello. I do not know how long the bamboo will last but maybe choose the bamboo that is matured. I know bamboo is structurally sound because I've seen it used as scaffolding in building construction. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. Cheers.

      Hello. You might get it free if you go to a small shop that changes motorcycle tires because they pay tire recyclers to dispose it for them. Or you can go to a tire recycler and pay $3 to $5 each. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers

      Hello. Great question. From what I have read they will last probably 50 to 80 years. This article is where I got the information: www.autoblog.com/2009/04/17/sobering-statistics-how-long-will-it-take-for-your-car-to-decom/
      I'm sure they will last at least 15 years since they are motorbike tires.

    • @primelricafrente
      @primelricafrente 4 роки тому

      Cool. Thanks. Based on your df wonderfull expertise. once the DF crawl downward after the tire, thats the start it will produce fruits. Is that correct?

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  4 роки тому +1

      @@primelricafrente sometimes that is the case and sometimes depending on the maturity of your planting material the plant will start growing new branches after bending down. Once those new branches bend down themselves then it will start producing flowers which if pollinated will develop into fruits. So basically it is dependent on how mature the plant is upon initial planting. And for a plant to be able to support full fruit development, from what I have read, it needs about 10 pounds of weight ( plant mass). I hope this helps. Thank you again. 👍😊👍 Cheers

    • @primelricafrente
      @primelricafrente 4 роки тому

      Cool. It must atleast 5kg from the cutting. So if it 4 cuttings atleast 20kg in total. Is that correct? Because im planning to create my own trellis it either altleast 4.5ft or 5ft. So that it can go down asap

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  4 роки тому +1

      @@primelricafrente usually a plant must have at least 4.6 kilograms of weight to be able to support a fruit to full maturity. A matured cutting with less weight of 4.6 kg will sometimes produce a flower and eventually abort the flower because it doesn't have enough energy to support fruit development. I hope it helps. Thank you again. 👍😊👍 Cheers
