  • Stay laser focused in the beginning of your lawn care business, but be sure to provide the basic services that most lawn care clients need... Bush trimming, bed maintenance, basic landscape work.... Otherwise, and unfortunately, they may be forced to turn to another service provider to find the services they are needing for their home.

    MY STORY:
In 2016 I had been in law enforcement for 7 years.
I was not in control of my schedule, I was hardly making any money, and I was away from my family working nights and holidays. I was capable of more, and I was silently suffering. I knew I was selling myself and my family short.
I started Florida Turf Pros as a side hustle in 2016 before going full time in 2017.
My lawn business changed my life.
I control my own schedule, control my own income, and I am proud of what I have built; a business that supports me, my family, and some employees.
If you are a lawn care business owner, this channel will be a valuable resource for you.
This really is a great industry to be in, and I hope that by documenting my journey it will help you.

I won’t go and try to poach a lawn away from another fella or fellet but if someone asks for a quote I will give them one.

I understand to some extent for some people. But some small single operators it may not make sense to slow down to do 1 flower bed vs doing 3-5 lawns in that time. Just because it’s outside doesn’t mean do it. I don’t wash concrete, power wash homes, pour concrete. Therefore it’s not just assumed I do flower beds 😂

Bed maintenance and shrub trimming have been part of services that I offer since day 1. Its a no brainer and I reserve Fridays for all my clients shrub trimming. I have a small lawn that's 45$wkly. All around the house are shrubs and plants. All along the perimeter and fence line are shrubs and ornamental trees. It is over 200$ a month for the shrub work alone. Those are the properties I want.
I don't steal lawns from competition. They lose them to me.

Besides mowing basics, mow, weed eat, blow grass off driveway, spray cracks in driveway....I offer shrub trimming, light tree trimming, and bed maintenance. Far as spreading mulch, wood chips, gravel and landscaping, I sub contract it out to a landscaping company that does nothing but landscaping and in return they send lawn clients my way because do not mow. It's a win win for both of us and our clients are happy.

As a part-time solo operator, I do the same. It's worked out so far. They much prefer these types of jobs than mow, blow, & go. Best of both worlds. Once I go full-time, I will take on those landscaping jobs...just not enough time with a full-time job.

This happened to me ONCE! After that my rule is NO other landscaper will step foot on my customer's property unless it's hardcore pavers, concrete etc.

Good video. I don’t do snow removal or big landscaping projects, but I got a guy who does. He gives me 10% finders fee, does great work, and won’t take my customer. Everyone is happy

I agree 100 percent, but as a solo guy, I just figured out that instead of 50 mowing clients I need 20 full maintenance clients. It's truly hard to make the change. Eggs are in smaller basket thing!!

My niche is "One stop shop for everything lawn related" for my customers. I offer full weed control & fertilization, aeration/overseed, and tree & shrub fertilizer. Even a little bit of pest control. I would love to pick up some of the things mentioned in the video as I used to do it. As a solo operator and being 48, my back doesn't agree with ground work. Love your videos and advice. I don't disagree at all. I just don't want to hire anyone and my back cant take it.

Good tips there my friend. We’re starting this year( our first year) just mowing, trimming and edging, simply because my partner has been doing that for a long time and that’s all he knows to do. I know nothing about mowing and I’m learning as I go. I’m the business guy he’s the muscle so to speak . But we will learn all these other services and to quote them as well as we go. Eventually we’ll offer a few we feel fits our business. Thank you for sharing. Bluegrass Lawn Care is us.

Long story short stop going after the low-hanging fruit. Invest in a ladder. So you could climb to the top.

So, one also needs to offer weed and feed services, irrigation, power washing, and gutter cleanout so the customer won't be let down and money will not be left on the table.
There is always going to be money left on the table.
I guess my question is, would you have taken them on as just a mowing client based on the posted videos showing high earnings per minute, or did you take a hit on the mowing to land the landscape job?

I am not specific to any brand, but our utility trailers for mowing are 6x12 or 7x12's and my dump trailer is an anderson 7x12 6 ton.

Kind of contradict yourself in the beginning of the video you say focus on mowing. Then you say take as much as you can. As a single operator I don’t have time to spend an entire day or Two on one flower bed. I’m assuming you had a crew do that flower bed. Stay your lane, steal what you got to but don’t make it seem like it’s the other guys fault for not doing what he could because you don’t know the entire situation for the other operator.
