A few more thoughts on the Nerf Cannon.
Yes, I know if I used a longer barrel I could get higher speeds, but I did not want to deal with a 20ft long gun. I think a 6ft barrel was enough to show what a supersonic nerf dart can do.
Davekni got a pingpong ball going 2000mph which is 2930 ft/s!! (mach 2.5). His barrel was 20ft long. It can shoot through 3/4in plywood! You can see that video here- • Supersonic Ping Pong B...
I always thought the speed of sound was the limiting factor, because the flow 'chokes' at mach 1. Its a big controversy among air-gunners, and theres like a 900 post topic on it here www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/.... Some guy got one going like 2100 ft/s which I thought was impossible. • 2035 fps PCP Airgun L... So it prompted me to do some research.
It turns out flow does choke at mach 1, but its only the mass flow that chokes. The gas can still expand supersonically.

haha thanks! TBH I kinda had to cheat and reinforce the nerf darts. I just used tape and earplugs, or filled the center with polyurethane foam because I did not want to add to much weight, that would invalidate results.

I’m sure you’ve seen the mythbusters using a vacuum tube and ping pong ball. Long story short if it’s not the nerf dart breaking the foil at the end you’re losing speed.

I'd like to hear about where you get the design criteria from. 600psi is no joke. The entire branch of ASME was formed due to failing pressure vessels and I think it's important to discuss these safety considerations for such a high-profile project.

Thanks for the mention! The burst disk is faster than a solenoid but the gas accelerate thanks to Bernoulli effect bla bla bla... To have a stronger dart you can put thin CA glue in the hole a couple of times. Keep it up man, I’m a fan!

Maybe his tank was larger and his barrel was longer so it was able to accelerate for longer. Perhaps this allowed him to use a lower pressure so that the force from the pressure wouldn't rip the dart apart. Instead of designing it to accelerate it by a short burst of high pressure you could design it to accelerate with a longer bust of lower pressure.

I’m surprised he didn’t try the Mythbusters method of depressurization a long tube, and puncturing the seal behind the nerf dart, allowing the air rushing back in to propel it. I know they got some crazy results from it, but I’m not sure if they were faster than this.
I have done something similar using a big bore airgun and a disposable Sabot to house the nerf dart! That way you don’t have to thread the dart and the sabot will engage the rifling - it also worked best with my 1100psi output (3k PSI rated with 4.5k burst discs) HPA tank but I didn’t use Helium so maybe you got comps with that due to the pressure differential and the excitability of He. I’ve used He before in my Benjamin Bulldog (Pitbull Mod) but idk if it performs proportionately better at lower PSI’s. It didn’t work super well with my more powerful HPA tanks. Rather than 3D Print the Sabot like normal - since it’s so lightweight inside the sabot - I had some success making some large gelatin capsules into sabots but the most success using water tubing which I perforated in a few different patterns
My favorite project is something you might like - bc it’s like a more dangerous version of lawn darts - but it’s essentially the same principle but using flachettes. Bonus points if you can super glue a cap from a capgun over the tip to make it pop on impact. Idk if you could do that with a nerf dart but it would be cool! It would probably destroy the dart with some fun foam expansion but you’d have to put a sort of hard plastic cylinder in between the top of the dart and the cap to activate the cap

I like the discussion of hypersonic flow in the description but wish it was mentioned in this 3 year old video lol. Hypersonic flow is pretty unintuitive and is the guiding principal behind rocket nozzle design. Pretty neat stuff.

I'm pretty sure, actually, from a crystal chemistry point of view, that I know what the spark is coming from. It's from the glass. You see, it takes a lot of energy to break a bond chemically, same as anything else. Glass is a crystalline silicon lattice, so it tends to have very tough bonds that are a mix between chemical bonds, and ionic ones. I think the sparks are coming from the nerf dart going SO FAST when it hits that the glass is broken harshly enough to make the ionic bonds separate and *emit light* as a result. It's not a spark, it's a photon. That's why you can't light the lighter on fire with it - it's not heat energy.
Just my theory though.
Only TheBackyard Scientist would create a canon strong enough to break half inch wood with foam and ONLY out a nerf dart in there
