The 21.5″ iMacs and the 27″ from 2013/2014 only support PCIe 2.0 x2. PCIe 2.0 is 500MB/s x2 minus 20% encoding losses equals 800 MB/s(theoretical maximum) which is roughly what you got. So the bottleneck is the interface not the evo 960 ssd. The sata 3 interface is 600 MB/s so again the speed that you got here for the 860 ssd is realistic. iMacs from 2015 on with PCIe slot support PCIe 3.0 x4 - 1GB/s x4 with negligible encoding loses = 4GB/s theoretical max - there should be much more benefit upgrading those models.

I'm using an M1 Macmin with an ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro in an enclosure connected to Thunderbolt, but since enclosures with speeds above 10Gbpc are expensive, I'm also using a Crucial X8 1TB Portable SSD for backup. I think the Samsung T5 is better for USB 3.1 use.
@@tongarashi4171 thanks for the reply. What external thunderbolt enclosure are you using? Do you know if the thunderbolt 3 connected to thunderbolt2 adapter will work to boot iMac 2013 externally? I have the same exact iMac as you (with 1tb old hhd). I’m trying to find one that is fast stable with good chip conversion. Seems like only thunderbolt 3 or usb enclosures available, no thunderbolt2. USB 3.1 is max speed around 540 mb/s, seems like the pci to pcie conversion on mother board from your computer is registering around 700. In your opinion if I go with thunderbolt you think it’s possible to reach above 700? Thanks.
I’m trying to decide which option to go with the upgrade to boot os system. I am hoping for the fastest and stable. What do you think?)
Options:
1. Add pcie m.2 nvme ssd to motherboard. (Is it stable will it sleep forever?)
2. Boot from swapping Internal sata ssd.
3. External usb 3.1 Sata ssd.
4. External pcie with thunderbolt enclosure. thunderbolt3 with thunderbolt2 with adapter. ( right now I don’t know which enclosure. Suggestions? )
@@GT-hg2un I didn't feel much merit in replacing the iMac's internal M.2 or HDD, since the imac 2013 only has the same speed as a SATA connection even when connected to an M.2 SSD. Of course it makes booting faster, but it's almost the same as connecting an external SSD to Thunderbolt and using it as a boot disk, so I think it's better not to bother disassembling it. Well, the work was worth doing because it was fun. Now that I've given that iMac away, I'd like to get an imac 2017 and upgrade it when I have time. The enclosure uses a Trebleet Thunderbolt3 NVMe M.2 SSD, I haven't hooked it up to the imac 2013 but I don't think it will work because of the wattage :(
hello can you share m2 speed test result?
Samsung 960evo m.2
write 720mb/s, Read 769mb/s
@@tongarashi4171 woow this to low... thank you
I mounted the ssd externaly and got speed of ca 950
I have a short question regarding the Evo 970 Plus.
Every time I put my Mac in sleep mode, something is happening and a folder with a "?" appears on the screen.
After restarting the Mac everything runs perfectly again...
Does anyone knows what's the problem and how to solve this?
Mac: A1419 (Late 2015)
macOS: Catalina 10.15.7
Modell: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
Version: 2B2QEXM7
Thanks a lot for your help
Whats brand of adapter nvme u use? Maybe because of that
Type in the following code in the Terminal:
sudo pmset hibernatemode 0 standby 0
From my research for this upgrade in a late 2015 imac, I'm sorry too tell you that that's a common problem with the Evo 970 plus. :/
@@micikho1 - Indeed. I've scoured the Internet for weeks now, there are no Adapters anywhere in the world that will support the EVO 970 Plus, for sure.
How did you assign the PCI drive as the boot drive?
I think when you change the both storage . Mac has a installer. I would like to know if u can change the boot to ssd if u have the HDD and only add the ssd
如果是用来做视频剪辑的话 是不是有些能力不足呢
Why no one invent magnetic tape to apply to shell and screen, so future removal easy like old 2011 model.
From now on, gpu and ram will be integrated like M1Mac, so I think it will be increasingly impossible to upgrade by myself, let alone remove the panel.
@@tongarashi4171 Well, for older Ima's, people will still buy them and upgrade.
upgrade ssd firmware get more faster :)
how to upgrade
@@bayby - I know, right? If anyone finds some magic trick and is willing to share, there will be thousands of grateful people
