I like how the Pawn and Queen both have two weapons and red eyes. It’s a good connotation to the fact that most pawns become queens if they make it across the board.
I think your queen design and what it says about your chess was really interesting. The sort of manic look you gave her shows a more aggressive and violent use of the queen, which is common in rapid formats. In longer games, people are genuinely very cautious about their queens, because a piece being valueable also makes it more vulnerable. Because of this, I had the concept of the queen being a lot more of a cautious, shrouded figure that still towered over the board. A sleeping giant that rarely moves but you always have to watch out for
The pawn is canonically my baby- I love her sm, and we should call her polly. I like the idea of choosing a really innocent sounding, very girly name for her beacause it makes her seem more like a child being used and thrown into the battle field just to be a sacrifice, than a highly trained solider that wants to be there.
Fun Fact: In the original version of Chess, the pieces at the four corners of the board were chariots. The Persian word for chariot is "Ruhk". Henceforth, the pieces that replaced the chariots were (and still are) called "Rooks". Edit: Another Fun Fact: Legend says that the inventor of chess was given the opportunity to ask for a reward. He asked for one grain of wheat on the first square of a chessboard, two grains on the next square, 4 grains on the next square, 8 grains, 16 grains, etc. up to the last square. The total amount of wheat would be 1645 times more than earth’s wheat yield in 2014!
You know, it was actually a really ingenious move to make the pawn a young girl, since if you move one to the other end of the board without letting it get killed, it becomes a queen! Great designs for my favorite board game of all time!❤
"A pawn in the form of a young girl moves to the other end of the board and becomes a queen." Literally the plot of Through the Looking Glass. Alice is my favorite chess piece.

This is one of my favorites from you! I love how you characterized each piece based on their movements. This is so beautiful! I would definitely love to see the other three! I'm not a chess player, but I loved Alice through the looking glass! I think the pawn looks super cute, but dangerous (like a street child or something). The knight is rather handsome, and I love his little hobby horse! Okay I know it's not a hobby horse but still. The queen looks absolutely terrifying! But in a cool way. Like if I was a human chess piece, and I saw her on the other end of the board.... I would just make a run for it lol.
The creativity you show in these videos never ceases to inspire me as an artist! You use so much imagination and thought when designing these chess characters, the idea of a chess-themed comic or animated series seems so cool to me now I've seen this, especially if someone like yourself were to work on that kind of hypothetical project, with an equally interesting story and lore to go with it 🤩🤩🤩
The pawn looks a lot like one of my oc! It looks great. In my country (France), bishops are only called fools for some reason and I think fools/bufoons are really cool characters (cooler than bishops in my opinion)
I wanted to comment the same thing! For the french name of bishop, I was thinking how cool it'd be for her to draw a king's jester, and then remembered it was bishop in English bahaha
This is genius! I always wondered what this would be like while playing chess lmao I would name the Queen Isabella because the reason the queen is the most powerful piece on the board is because Queen Isabella of spain objected to the idea of the king being more powerful than the queen and had the whole game changed! Neat little history fact right there
You say that you felt that the knight is sneaky. Missed opportunity to give him a moon and night type of symbol. Not only for the pun(knight/night) but the fact that it really is THE trickster piece that sneaks up on you at night.

These designs are absolutely awesome, I love them so much! I’d like to suggest Persephone for the Queen design, it’s the name of the queen of the underworld in Greek mythology and means “bringer of death/destruction”
Honestly, now that you've dissected their characters, chess is actually a really great premise for a novel: two warring kingdoms, where the young are conditioned to be perfect soldiers, with the promise for those who become war heroes to gain a better social standing, the kings of each kingdom are seen as the main figure and are who have to be defeated in order to gain the kingdom, however, the queens are the ones making the important decisions. I haven't included all the pieces, but it's a start.
As a chess player myself, I was wondering whether I should suggest turning chess pieces into characters, so I'm glad that you did it anyway. I like that you are also implementing the kind of personality that each piece could have. Of course I'd love to see the rest of the pieces.
I feel like Min would be a good name for the pon because it's gender neutral and means clever. Min also makes me think of miniature, and the pon is small.
I'd definitely love to see how you handle the Bishop, the King, and whatever the castle's called! I also love that for those people that don't play chess, you briefly explained the importance of the queen.
this is awesome! I'd definitely love to see a part 2 - especially curious to see how you do the king since he's the most important but also the weakest piece, I imagine him as a very old man who gets carried around everywhere haha
Thank you so much for this! I am writing a webcomic (it’s actually a manga) about a real life chess game and I keep getting stuck on ideas for outfits so thanks this helps a lot!!
Headcanon that the pawn is a shapeshifter who can shapeshift at will into another chess piece. Building up this magic takes a while, though, and it’s kind of like a giant burst when it happens. Just some food for thought :PP
Really interesting new series!! I would recommend researching about the names their named after as well, like how for the bishop you can theorize they only move sideways because they are religious and supposed to remain politically "neutral", so when they do interfere they can only do so from the sidelines. This is why I really liked your design of the pawn, pawns are generally of the lower ranks of society, usually used as nothing more than replaceable objects, which I think was carried over really well in the design. Her short and almost scrawny body type, her skewed expression that shows her cunningness and determination to live, etc. (My own interpretation) I think it would be pretty ironic if her name was Angel or Angie to contrast her probably messed up version of the world. In my mind, she's like a kid that grew up on the streets with no one to care for her. She had to learn how to fight for herself, how to con and manipulate others to get out of trouble. A fast learner, but still naive in the ways of the world.
This is one of my favorite of your character design videos so far! I definitely want to see all the pieces in as a many sequel videos as it takes. I've actually read a little one shot about chess based characters on Webtoon Canvas and it was quite a cool premise though the story was never finished.

Wow these designs are so cool I just love them, my favorite is the Queen because she looks so cool with her crowns and the Knight is also amazing with is cape/shoulder armor. 💅👌
I just wanna say… When I was in the eighth grade, my teacher had a chess board with one pawn that was different than all the others. It was from a separate chess set because one of the pawns had gone missing. My classmates and I called this pawn “Runt” as it was smaller and came up with a really big backstory for it!!!
You always come up with these amazing, fun ideas! So inspired! Also your knight design feels really accurate to the knight piece, it's very on point to how the knight piece feels in a game.
As a chess and art fan, I love your interpretation. It is such a huge inspitration and I think an anime or webcomic with the antagonists being designed like chess pieces would be really cool, since a lot of anime use chess or shogi to show viewers how smart and menacing the villain is. Especially since I always feel like a mastermind when making a good move against the only person I can play with, which is my mom, like seriously where are y'all chess players hiding?!
i used to professionally play chess in middle school, won a lot of tournaments and such, and i gotta say i have thoughts about every single piece here haha. you really nailed the sacrificing pawns angle, when i first started chess i didnt care that my pawns were being taken just to advance my attack more, but as i got better i realised pawns make the foundation of any chess game. theyre the structure and the pillars which you have to think around. the knights are the scouts, the ones you use to advance your position and prepare. my favorites were the bishops, a man i played against (he was in uni and i was still a kid haha) told me i used them expertly. they are about control. crowd control, in game terms. they are basically snipers and their synergy with pawns is extremely important. theyre like pawn+. and usually regarded as more valuable than knights in most situations (tho it depends on the game, and thats why they are the same number value). the rooks are protectors, they have your back. they are a line of defense especially when all your pieces are out of the way and your king is alone. they really shine in the endgame, when most pieces are exchanged. they have a hidden gem sort of quality, and can be especially destructive in pawn+rook endgames. the queen is the world ender, when she comes over you know the attack is the real deal. and when they are exchanged you have changed the entire game's trajectory, because you are in the endgame now. theyre secretly controlling how the game proceeds. so yeah! i think your designs work really well and would love to see the rest
Would love to see a part two, and maybe at the end, you can take transparent background versions of each character and line them up and duplicate them to imitate their spots on a chess board at the start!
Characters made from chess peices have always intrigued me and this was an excellent take on them! This might be my favorite pawn character for sure as it incorporates their rather sad nature into play. My favorite piece has alway been the rook! Both gameplay wise but also the idea of this entire living castle tower moving in massive straight lights intrigued me! I've tried making it into this sort of moving tower tank with canons on all sides, as well as doodle it as this massive bird lugging around a tower to drop upon it's enemies as I believe the Rooks name was inspired by the mythical bird creature known as the roc. Bishops will be equally interesting to see, the peices I have at home always make them look like they're frowning!
I would've added aspects of the pawn into the queen to refer to how a pawn can promote. Or add details of the queen and knight (the only pieces a pawn should be promoted to) onto the pawn. Also always love the work and there just small suggestions. I always forget to mention the parts a like because usually I like most of the design

Especially since I always feel like a mastermind when making a good move against the only person I can play with, which is my mom, like seriously where are y'all chess players hiding?!
Literally here within the first 20 seconds lmao. Cant wait for this video! Already know it’ll be amazing
Damn, I LOVE your characterization of these pieces! Can't wait to see the rest!
Me when I saw the Knight for the first time : "HORSEY 👹"
I used to steal them from my primary school chess boards to play horse 😂
even though i don’t play chess , the pawn looks the cutest and she’s my favorite so far!
You are always so creative!!!
i used to professionally play chess in middle school, won a lot of tournaments and such, and i gotta say i have thoughts about every single piece here haha. you really nailed the sacrificing pawns angle, when i first started chess i didnt care that my pawns were being taken just to advance my attack more, but as i got better i realised pawns make the foundation of any chess game. theyre the structure and the pillars which you have to think around. the knights are the scouts, the ones you use to advance your position and prepare. my favorites were the bishops, a man i played against (he was in uni and i was still a kid haha) told me i used them expertly. they are about control. crowd control, in game terms. they are basically snipers and their synergy with pawns is extremely important. theyre like pawn+. and usually regarded as more valuable than knights in most situations (tho it depends on the game, and thats why they are the same number value). the rooks are protectors, they have your back. they are a line of defense especially when all your pieces are out of the way and your king is alone. they really shine in the endgame, when most pieces are exchanged. they have a hidden gem sort of quality, and can be especially destructive in pawn+rook endgames. the queen is the world ender, when she comes over you know the attack is the real deal. and when they are exchanged you have changed the entire game's trajectory, because you are in the endgame now. theyre secretly controlling how the game proceeds. so yeah! i think your designs work really well and would love to see the rest
Pawns when they reach the promotion square: 💅
Becomes the mf queen:
the knight is definetly my fave. thew character just looks so cool
This is really cool!
I NEED a part two of this. I need so see you do the rook, it’s my favorite piece.
Please please please! Another creepypasta! ❤❤❤❤
Yes! Yes! This!
Oh yes please do a part 2! Your Art is so good! ❤️
I READ THIS AS *CHEESE* PIECES 😭
No bc she could turn types of cheese into cute girls and guys 😹😹😹
Hey!! Here's some more video ideas for you :)
- If different paranormal entities were humans
- If famous scandals were people
- If different social medias were people
- If different subcultures were monsters (could be stuff like emo, scene, punk, ect.)
- If more dangerous drugs/medications were monsters/people
- The 6 wonders of the world as people/monsters
OMG I WAS JUST DOING A CHESS-INSPIRED STORY AND THIS IS SOOOO PERFECT INSPIRATION FOR THE CHARAS. ILYYYYY
WE NEED PART TWO!❤
(love your art btw😊❤)
my only request is that you make the king the fluffiest middle-aged dad ever, if i'm not getting "hi hungry, i'm dad" from him istg there will be riots
This is like the other side of Moriah Elizabeth's chess set. These designs are based on movements and mechanics rather than names and starting position
i’m very bad at chess but this is making me want to play it again…. the knights have always been my favorites too :)
(3:55) I totally thought you were about to give the knight some stubby cartoon legs! In any case, loved the video!
I love how much thought you put into your characters. You can tell you are an artist and also a storyteller ❤
I kept flashing back to when Harry Ron and Hermione were on the live wizard chess 😝
THIS LOOKS SO COOL!!! i would LOVE to see a part 2!!!
Lavendertowne always surprises me with her unique style and ideas, they all look so good!
