  • This urchin is very venomous!!! Trust me, I know. The sting feels equivalent to a wasp sting if you get hit by a spike, but you normally will get hit by more than one spike if you do run into one of these guys on accident. He is a great algae eater and can even be in a predator tank!

    For ones commenting about the eye, we know it’s not an actual working eye. But it is called the “Orange Eyespot”.

    I got one of these as a hitch hiker on one of my zoanthids a 2-3 months ago, it’s now a permanent resident. Found it on a dying coral today, my dad removed the coral, he gently removed the urchin with a pair of aquarium tweezers. It flew in the current for a minute, and landed in my Acanthophyllia patch. It was surprisingly fast though!
    Update on urchin: It’s climbing the black wall at the back of my tank
    Edit: my urchin stung me ouchhhhhhhh

    LOL. I got stung by mine too. It is like a very mild bee sting. I also had a spine stuck in me. The main thing I’m concerned with regarding these urchins though is that my fish run into him. My black Thompson tang had a nasty sore on his face for a week. He recovered but unfortunately the same thing happened to my little ruby dragonet and he didn’t make it. I think it’s because my tang is large and strong. My lil ruby just couldn’t recover.

    Would one be fine in a tank with a valentini puffer, blue dot jawfish and clownfish

    • @BrockLeonard
      @BrockLeonard  4 роки тому +1

      Alex Lohr Should do fine together! I’d be surprised if the puffer went after it.

    So how do you move one if you are going to get stung? I’m afraid of breaking a spine by using a net.

    • @BrockLeonard
      @BrockLeonard  3 роки тому +4

      Breaking spines is natural for them, they will break their own spines to reach food inbetween rocks. We tend to wait for them to move onto the glass or sand. We've rubberbanded food in places to get them to go to it, making it easy to scoop them up in a bowl or cup.

    You said that don't put a big one in a small tank but would a 30 gallon going to be good enough for any size pretty much

    Do all urchins eat coral? I just got a pincushion urchin today from a friend but I'm not willing to sacrifice my Zoas or other corals for this urchin.

    • @BrockLeonard
      @BrockLeonard  3 роки тому +2

      Once an urchin runs out of algae to eat, they will look for other food, which could in fact be your corals

      @@BrockLeonard I gave the urchin to someone else. It kept knocking my corals over into the sand and I was not willing to come home after being on the road as a truck driver and find a bunch of dead frag plugs scattered all over my tank.

    I want to buy one but so much goes into it. What is dkh? How do I change ph levels? Does anyone know of a video where someone makes a tank for these from scratch?

      You need to know the basics of reef keeping… try searching on yt, how to start a reef tank, btw you cant keep these in fw.

    I don't know why people put them in their tanks. I've even heard that they can eat some corals. I prefer Blue Tuxedo Urchin.

    • @BrockLeonard
      @BrockLeonard  6 років тому +1

      Artem Klimov Yeah we’ve had to go and remove em from tanks because once they ran out of algae to eat, they would turn to the corals.

  • @bracka69
    @bracka69 5 років тому

    I've heard they will eat Zoanthids and Leather Corals. Is that true?

    • @BrockLeonard
      @BrockLeonard  5 років тому +3

      bracka69 What I’ve noticed with Urchins is that they are amazing algae eaters but if they run out of algae for too long, they will find other things to eat which could be your corals. I had a pencil urchin eat my star polyps one time😂

    • @bracka69
      @bracka69 5 років тому +1

      Brock Leonard Ok thanks. Will try one and closely monitor it and if it does I can toss it back in the ocean. Have them by the thousands where I live.
