Gigged this for 8 years now. Awesome little thing. Fihol auto stomp with the separate box and trigger. Sadly it gave up this weekend so have ordered this one. Get one. They will elevate your solo duo gigs.

Hi Aaron, I contacted you recently on your live show about using a drum stompbox, and you suggested that the Wild Dog stomp was probably the best on the market. I did however order the Drumport Laser stomp 2 in 1 after watching your review on it about 4 times😊, and I have to say this is a great pedal and I'm having a lot of success with it after a short learning curve.
I don't think I'll be sending it back to Thomann. Cheers 😊

This looks so fun. It certainly beats (no pun intended} my current method of time keeping by strapping a maraca to my foot..
Totally cool device! Especially if, as you propose, they manage to deploy an auto feature for the simple beat sounds. As for stopping when in auto mode with a drum kit, I rather like the stop-and-restart implementation. That enables us to handle breaks (dramatic pauses) in songs and restart in tempo, without any effort at all. Lots of rock/blues/pop songs call for that. If they give us a switchable option to stop completely, though, that would be cool for other cases like yours. Also digging the sound of the guitar and pickup!
I agree that the stop feature is useful. Maybe a future version could allow for a two button external switch or have larger switches on the pedal itself.
@@aaronshortmusic Yep, a dual external switch option would be magnificent. Even lacking that feature, I might actually buy one of these thanks to you resurrecting the idea for me. ;-) Had once tried the stripped-down version, and it was buggy. That was a few years back, when it first came out. Seems they got things sorted, now, so I‘ll give it another shot - this time in the version you tested. Incidentally: Just returned an Ortega QuantumLoop I was inspired to try after you featured that Ortega stompbox. It has a lot going for it, but falls short in some very major ways.
@@scottbecker3485 Yeah I really like the Horse Kick Pro. The Quantum is adventurous but doesn’t have the work flow that I need.
@@aaronshortmusic Yes: Simplicity rules in this case. So - hand on heart - will you actually end up using the Drumport Laser pedal instead of your Horse Kick Pro, now? It seems to pull even with it and also surpass it in several major ways...
@@scottbecker3485 Yes but I will keep the Horse Kick to use either as a second drum or for traveling light.
cool demo, Aaron. This product generally isn't useful for the type of songs/music I write, so I wouldn't have a use for it, but it's a pretty neat idea. I could see this being very useful for a street musician.

Just revisited this (excellent) review. Enjoyed and benefited from it every bit as much the 2nd time around. :-) And I will now pull the trigger on one of these. I think it will serve me perfectly (even if the auto feature would also be great on the single sounds). I will probably use it exactly as you are/were, i.e. single beats in manual mode for a lot of songs, then switching to auto mode (with fuller kit) for particular ones that will benefit from that. I think the auto mode will also be great for songs with breaks/dramatic pauses, and then resuming at exactly the right speed. Looking forward to testing it out in a few days.

Thanks for your review. I bought this device and when I plugged in the power (9volt with negative ground) the laser did not turn on. FYI - I plugged it into my amp using 1/4” mono cable.

Could someone with this pedal please upload a quick video of each drum beat pattern? I’m on the fence with this one. Cant find any video of the swing 6/8 or 12/8 style patterns
Hi Aaron, I’ve been looking for something like this and agree totally with all your comments and updates that they could do to improve, This would be ideal for me with the option of the auto function on the single sound patches, do you know was it ever improved upon, otherwise it would be the single patch version through a loop pedal ?

I actually spoke to them about this last week at Guitar Summit. You should contact them and tell them what you told me. It would turn an excellent product into an essential one IMO.

Hah! You know, I really see this thing. Midi port or not, wow. That is actually really cool 😎. I’ve been on a bit of a wooden finish thing since those acoustic pedals you’d demo’d. About the linking to a looper. I found this TC Electronics ditto x2 jam thingy today with dual onboard mics or an extendable lapel style mic which actually follows along to any acoustic sound. Intriguing idea.
I’ve even bought a non midi pedal this year. Freaky I know.
Great review! Did you plug this directly into your guitar and vocal sound, or are you using a separate amplifier. Would these bass drum type sounds muddy up the guitar and vocals if you had it fed through the same amplifier (Boss VE - 8 Singer)?

Hi Aaron. I purchased one of the Finhol laser triggers about 4 or 5 years ago. The same as the one reviewed with out the sounds in it as I already had the Finhol Auto Stomp. One of the problems I found with it was when gigging on a polished timber floor or slightly reflective surface. It would miss trigger and ended up not working at all I noticed that Finhol may removed it from their products. See how you go if you're using this for an extended time live. Maybe it has been improved since it was first released.
I was interested in your comments about things you'd like to have improved. The Finhol auto stomp does have just the kick or Cajon low available as a continual play after setting the tempo in auto mode. I think they took it out on later versions and put in the 3/4 loops. Also the original auto stomp when auto mode has the function of stopping with a single stomp and then you have to redo the 4 counts to start it again. That is an advantage of not having to bend down and switch to set a different tempo. But I found it to be a problem live in the case if you wanted to stomp the beat say on count 1 of a bar and then to re start it. you have to wait til beat one of the following bar to start your 4 taps beats to trigger the auto again. Great review. If this was midi controllable, I'd buy it straight away, but it's useless if you have to reach down to change settings all the time.
Midi out would be good too for looping.
Thank you Tony! I wouldn’t say it’s useless but I agree that the extra control would make it a lot more useful. There’s always the single version for half the price which is just a foot drum without the automatic features.
Hi Aaron. Thanks for the great review of this product. I have a couple of questions:
1) Would this connect to a stompbox converter and if yes, how would that transform the possibilities of the sound produced.
2) I saw a comment about DC power being a problem for speakers. Does this being a DC current user really agave any negative impact on speakers?

Hi! The sounds are all built in. It is not possible to connect it to another sound module. There is no negative impact on the PA when using this. It is very quiet.
Is there an In on it? It would be nice as a solo performer with only 2 channels on Bose L1 to have it go through the guitar channel…
I would plug it into the Aux in.
Hi Aaron, just bought one of these, same model but now seems to have a third position on the top left toggle switch. It is now marked: M1/4; M1/2; Auto. Ive only just received it today and no idea what the extra switch setting will do. It didnt come with a battery, so Ive got to wait until I can go get one. Have you any idea what M1/2 position will do? Great review, bought it on the strength of your video, thanks.
From the user guide: In this position, 4 beats for 4/4 beats or 3 beats for 3/4 beats are specified for the desired tempo. From the fifth or fourth beat, the Auto Stomp Player begins to play the selected rhythm automatically. This function is terminated by another blow on the trigger.
It’s 1/4 for every beat, 1/2 for every other beat (good for fast songs) or auto mode.

Connect it to the mixer. I don’t loop it. It plays continuously.

Thanks! I run it direct to PA. If you have a sub it really shines as you get that low end thump.
@@aaronshortmusic nice one Aaron, I think they are on to something with the lazer setup and autoplay really makes it easier. Surprised there aren't more options as sophisticated as this as it's so much easier to play an acoustic solo or duo set than organise gigs and rehearsals around a 4 or 5 piece. Also listening to the same singer on the same acoustic for 2-3 hours, even covers, can get tiring on the ears no matter how good they are as the frequencies are the same and your ears get lazy after an hour I reckon. I have tried the Roland and also the Drumport, Ortega, Wild Dog and others. To me they are all very different and I cannot think of one that would directly replace the Roland.

No the controls on the right do not have any use in that mode.

What power supply is being used??
It comes with one that runs a from a 9v battery. I believe any standard pedal supply will work. Just check the specifications of the supply and the pedal first.
Hi Arron. When playing the manual side drum kit. Do you have to stomp every beat in 4/4? Or do you just stomp on beats 1 and 3. As you would with a kick drum?
Hi Darren. I always tap every beat but I think there’s a switch that allows you to tap every other beat. I will check it next time I use it.

Great tech but,..doing a gig?..feet fatigue would be an issue I think as well as timing. You’d have to remember to keep that kick / groove going without distractions huh? Good practice under live conditions should get one in a comfort zone with this thing I suppose! b(‘ _< ! )>
It’s fine. I’ve used these for a while now. It takes a little while to get used to it and then it becomes natural (you still have to have good timing of course). The auto feature is nice for those songs where you want to play to the rhythm instead of creating the rhythm yourself.
I hear ya. I also find myself challenged with trying to keep a constant beat throughout a long song, whilst also remembering the chords, lyrics and even harmonica solos. ;-) That said, the laser concept seems far better than the normal stompboxes I‘ve used, for there is absolutely no risk of stomping limply from time to time and not getting a sound, i.e. missing a beat. This also and especially applies to live situations where you are distracted and not paying great attention to keeping your foot squarely on a (narrow) pedal. The laser thingy should be easier to stay centered in. Also, normal pedals tend to „creep forward“ after a while of stomping on them, especially on slick floors. This pedal will never do that. But about your timing concerns: Why not feed this into a simple looper and just lay down the basic beat with it, and then sit back and enjoy playing in perfect timing? ;-)
At first I was sold but as you went into the cons I quickly became disappointed... why not make it where you can loop just the drums... why wouldn't you make it were you can change the tempo without bending down!
Yes I would love to see a new version that addresses those things.

Nice product but way too pricey! You are paying almost 200 euros more for the laser feature than a good, standard type stompbox. It is a good product and I do like it but not enough to pay nearly 500 euros! My quantumLoop and Expression pedal will do me for the time being. Thanks for the review tho! Cheers.
Hey Paul. It’s definitely the least affordable stomp box that I have tried so far. What I will say is that one of the $200 boxes I used regularly broke down after 12 months. If this Drumport lasts longer because of the lazer then I think that will be a consideration here.
@@aaronshortmusic That is true. Less contact and abuse could be a benefit. I do like the fact that it will probably not miss a beat as it does not rely on making good contact but just breaking the laser beam. My QuantumLoop is good but i need to wear certain footwear to make it so. I could play in my bare feet with this which, in summer here, is more preferable lol Thanks again for the review

Just tried - and returned - a QuantumLoop. I wonder how you get on with yours? Trying it for 20 minutes showed me that: a) The stomp sound often gets inadvertently triggered upon tapping the looper button to start recording, thus recording that sound even if not desired; b) Playing it with socks instead of shoes doesn‘t always make it actuate, especially when the Dynamic switch is set to variable sensitivity; c) When stomping and not paying attention to placing one‘s foot square on the unit, it‘s easy to inadvertently hit the sound changing button (!), thus switching to an unwanted sound. All that was enough to turn me off. You seem very pleased with yours, so I guess I‘m just too sloppy and fussy a player for this pedal. ;-)
@@scottbecker3485 I dont know if you had the latest firmware update, but that seemed to stop the problem with the looper. As for socks, its a no no!! lol. You need shoes with a good, hard sole then all is good. I am happy with it now I have got used to it. Especially like it with the Expression pedal for added accompaniment. Unfortunateley I dont think there is anything that is perfect. Ive never accidentally changed the sound tho! I have trouble trying to change it on purpose lolol

Do you use your BeatBuddy in the standard way, with stepping through song parts? Or rather with „single-shot“ backing tracks?
@@scottbecker3485 I have been using stored loops on the RC-500 lately but when I use the Beat Buddy I have the song parts stored (only a couple of the most important ones) and switch them manually.

Ok. After seeing your review I decided to go for it. Well I'm very disappointed. Playing in 1/2 time doesn't keep time well. And it doesn't start very well and is louder than when using 1/4 time. 1/4 time is better timing wise. But try playing a full gig stamping your foot every beat. Not possible. So this review is not worth watching. Try showing that part for people. I will do a proper review. Then its going straight back for refund.
Sorry to hear that. I don’t use it that way and always tap on every beat. It took me a few weeks to get used to it for sure, its not something that you can just start using right away and of course the players timing has to be more accurate than on every beat which is why I use it that way.
@@aaronshortmusic my mate came round for a jam. I must say the pedal did sound ace. And with a little practice. I'm now keeping time in 1/2 . But still annoyed that the drums are louder in that mode. But may work round it.
@@darrenwright7860 I hadn’t noticed a volume change but I guess if you only use one of the modes then it won’t be an issue.
@@aaronshortmusic Any chance you could try it again to see if there is a volume difference? And in 1/4 it plays straight away. In 1/2 it doesn't start to play for a few stomps. Is this the case for your one too? I have emailed drumport asking. But I emailed also asking about the 1/2 and 1/4 at same time I asked you. But no reply from them. Mine might be faulty if your volume is same for everything. I would much appreciate if you can let me know. Thanks
