  • Eroica California 2018 - A Sunday Heroic route, and today we ride! This video is the second part of the L'eroica California 2018 bike ride taken place on Sunday over the weekend of April 14th and 15th, in Paso Robles, California. In this video I provide footage of the heroic route. The ride lived up to hype. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes cycling and enjoys organized rides. Thank you to all the volunteers for making the day super special, and to the organizers and sponsors for all your contributions to make this happen. One of the best organized rides ever.

    Dreamy! I've been riding midwest gravel races. I'm ready for something different. This looks like just the thing. How beautiful. And, I have an early 80s Panasonic I might be able to fix up. Great video!

      Thank you, Mick! I can't recommend this ride enough. The organizers and volunteers went way beyond in putting together a superb route on mostly remote roads. The stretch down HWY 1 did have cars, but with a tailwind, the views, and wide shoulder, it went by quickly. Also, Paso Robles is a nice town and San Luis Obispo is just 30 minutes to the South. It's a full weekend.

    That looked like a great ride, I really loved the footage thru the wine orchards. It was also great to see the vintage machines all out in an organized event with some great vintage jerseys. Another Great video !

      This is what really sets this ride apart from other organized rides. Being able to ride between the vines and rows of vineyards out of the way of cars, was one of the best parts. I'm still buzzing from it all.

      Hi Kent, We had a good group going there for a while. I'm glad I was able to ride with you and capture some of the footage from the day. It was quite a beautiful place to ride and all the vintage bikes and attire fit right in with the landscape.

      The entire day was incredible! I really enjoyed the route, and I wanted to stay longer at each of the stops just to show my appreciation, but I also knew I needed to keep moving in order to get back before too late. Everyone was so kind and the roads were mostly car free for the entire day! I can't imagine things being any better. Truly amazing!

    That frame predates the modern geometry of short chain stays, shorter wheelbase and steeper head tube that was popularized in the early 70s by Italian frame builders. That was optimized for all asphalt racing. Your frame has a longer wheel base, I can see the greater tire clearance with the seat tube and the trail is probable a bit longer than 52 mm. We have two legend frame builders in the area. J P Weigle and Richard Sachs. Building a frame is far more involved than building a wheel. But, when you do everything right, how is it better than someone else's, who has done it right as well? DeRosa, Pegoretti, Ibis, Serotta, they are at that level. Sachs is the Richey of PregoRichey tubing. His bikes have lower BB at about 80 mm drop. His chain stays are longer and the wheelbase is longer. That is why your vintage Bianchi rides so well. I describe his bikes as being like the bikes Bahamontes, Bobet, Gaul and Magni rode. I only rode one, once and I am on a quest to get one.
    When I was 13, 14 years old, I would spott his Richard Sachs and or Bob Jackson parked outside of the Puritan and Genesta health food store. I would be eyeballing thouse bikes from about an inch away. Lee would come running out and ask me, “What’s going on?” After a while, he got to know me. I would talk to the local shop owner, Frank, about his bikes. I have always wanted a Richard Sachs and there is nothing wrong with a Bob Jackson. I now have the funds to be able to make a fair offer for his collection. So I called Lee and told him, when you are ready I would like to make an offer for your collection. They are not even in my size. I don't care. The Jackson has Phil Wood hubs,BB and platform pedals on it.

    • @Henrywildeberry
      @Henrywildeberry  3 роки тому

      In hindsight, I would have gone with a lower BB. With the shorter crank I use (170mm) pedal strike wasn't a big issue in the first place. With Ms. Cools bike she went slightly lower 75mm. Her bike rides very well.

    Excellent camera work. Looks very cinema graphic. I’m just trying to imagine how you’re moving your arm to get those shots. I need to upgrade from my iPhone SE camera.

    • @Henrywildeberry
      @Henrywildeberry  6 років тому

      The iPhone SE is pretty good. I've used it quite a bit, even in this video. The early shots are from a Sony FDR X3000 and no color grading. The light in the morning was perfect! The later shots are with the iPhone (The Sony battery died).

    • @chidonchea
      @chidonchea 6 років тому +1

      Henrywildeberry I used to use a go pro, but I found it to be a pain to edit with. The SE is much easier and faster in the editing process and uploading. The only drawback I found is that the camera lens angle is too narrow and the sound quality is poor in wind conditions. The good thing about the SE is that Strava works even though the phone isn’t activated. Does the SE with the Mike attached travel well in your back jersey pocket while you’re riding?

    • @Henrywildeberry
      @Henrywildeberry  6 років тому

      Yes, I've found the Mic attached to the iPhone to be pretty easy to use. I just let the Mic (with dead cat) hang out of the jersey pocket. It gives me something to reach back and grab when I want to capture something in a hurry. It does present one challenge in holding it since it protrudes outwards from the front. By the way, the Rode Mic for the iPhone is pretty good at sound reading in the wind, however, I have noted a weird feedback on occasion. I haven't sorted it out yet. It's still a better tradeoff than wind noise. I position the Mic to face forward, and only use the front lens, not the selfie lens. Admittedly, I have dropped the phone a few times when filming. With the Sony I recently purchased, I find I'm only using iPhone as a back-up. What's cool about the iPhone is the footage looks like 4k, and as you have already mentioned it loads up faster, and seamless for editing. It might be better to get the iPhone 8 or 10 if you can afford it. The crazy part is I bought a Lumix G85 with a 12 to 60mm lens for the same price as a new iPhone X!

      Henrywildeberry thanks, I’m going to order the mic

    • @Henrywildeberry
      @Henrywildeberry  6 років тому

      If you live near SF there is a camera shop on Chestnut Street next to the Apple Store. They carry the Mic's and you can return it if you don't like it. Keep in mind you may need to turn the sound in your phone to mute, and perhaps turn the wifi off. I still haven't figured out why, but sometimes I get feedback in the recording. I hope it works for you.

    Henry, what size tires were you using on this eroica bike? I did two eroica hispania rides (short routes) on a mid-80s Masi with Continental 28s. I think that's the widest tire I can run on my bike. But the ride seemed pretty sketchy on these tires. Maybe your early-60s Bianchi can accommodate larger tires. Just interested. Thanks.

    • @Henrywildeberry
      @Henrywildeberry  6 років тому +1

      Dexter, I used 32mm tires on the Bianchi. These are the largest possible tires I could fit with the fenders. It's worth mentioning, this tire/frame combo proved to me to be as supple on the road as my heavier steel touring bike with 35mm tires. My take away is this, a thinner walled flexible frame with a really nice curved fork (see photos on my instagram) will ride very smoothly. The fork acts as a suspension. As the frame gets stiffer, larger tires are required to get the same supple feel. Here the tires become the suspension. With higher modulus carbon frames and oversized tubing, both increasing overall frame stiffness, bigger tires help. Therefore, many people riding modern bikes are heading towards 38mm and larger tires to earn back some comfort, while also increasing control for mixed terrain, and adding disc brakes. Modern bikes being light can afford to add a few hundred grams in disc braking parts without paying a big weight penalty. There are other tradeoffs to discuss, but that's for another time...

      Thanks Joseph. I'm already looking forward to next years addition. The ride will start and finish in a new location in the town of Cambria. This a nice coastal town on the central coast, and if you haven't been there it's worth visiting sometime. The Bianchi has a mysterious history. I've done some research and even looked up the Bianchi guys at the Concours this past year, and so far it's still a mystery. What we know is the headset is indicative of the 60's era racing bikes, where the bearings were integrated into the lugs (weight savings???). The orange color was quite a divergence from the classic celestial green Bianchi was noted for using. Internet research shows this orange was a color specifically destined to the North American market. The long chain stays and 27-inch STEEL rim wheels with Huret component groupo tells us it may have been assembled/built-up in Canada and then at some point made its way to the US, perhaps to a bay area bike shop? The frame has a sticker on the down tube that reads, "Record" and another on the seat tube that reads, "Hand Made in Italy." It has a very large fork rake and very thin tubing. I can only assume this was more of a touring frame, but since Bianchi was quite an assembly line for the time they may have used a few carry over parts from the more expensive racing bikes such as the Campione or Specialissima. The frame itself is quite light and springy. It rides like a dream with 32mm Compass tires. I'd even go as far as saying it rides better than my Ti road bike and my other steel touring bike. The downside with this bike is the gearing, the horizontal non adjustable track style dropouts, and the integrated headset. The headset works flawlessly, but it's going to require specialized tools if I ever want to replace the bearing races as they a pressed into the lugs. The other downside is the seat tube, it uses a 25mm diameter seat post, which is almost non-existent these days. The center-pull brakes are center mounted, and not braze on mounted as I would like. There are no rack mounts on the fork either. Otherwise, it's a sweet bike!

      For this event the fairgrounds where the event was held offered camping and showers. For off grid camping I have two solar showers that I fill up and I can get about two showers from each one.
