    The Tarnished were sent away from the Lands by Marika as an insurance policy. If they had stayed in the Lands, their souls would have been absorbed by the Tree/Beast when they died. Since they died outside of the domain of the Greater Will, Marika was able to safely recall their souls and use them against the Greater Will.

      But why specifically did Marika do all of this. Multiple times in trailers and gameplay does it say that "Marika was pushed to the brink," after the night of the black knives. It was then she shattered the elden ring in reaction to Godwyn's death, presumably her first or second born (counting Mohg and Morgott as both first-born for twins). Perhaps her faith was waning in the greater will for a while and she planned to tactfully dismantle the elden ring. But in a fit of grief and rage, shattered it, leaving Radagon to desperately fix it, with no luck.

    You know, it’s actually theorized that Godfrey brutalized Placidusax with his bare hands in a battle so climatic, it forced placidusax to pull Phram azula into the sky away from the lands between.
    Also if some are wondering who the Stormlord is, he is the original lord of Stormveil castle who joined forces with the dragons in a war that fought against marika during the ages of the Erdtrees beginning. Godfrey was tasked to defeat the dragons, giving marika room to raise the erdtree and allow the greater will to take full control of the lands between. After Godfrey fought placidusax, the dragon lord. He came to fight his last true enemy the Stormlord. It is unknown the intentions or appearance of the stormlord but from item descriptions he was known to be a fearsome ruler. One that I hope at one point we fight or hear more mention of.

      Not completely, there's a theory Marika actually banished Godfrey and his people because she was planning to overthrow/get rid of the influence of the Greater Will and banning the Tarnished from the lands between was part of that plan
      So she intended him and his people to come back, she didn't discard him if we believe this theory

  • @apophisstr6719
    @apophisstr6719 Рік тому +212

    My theory is Marika's intention is to rid the Lands Between of the influence of Greater Will:
    - She intentionally driven Godfrey away, to make sure he's out of touch of the GW and continue to battle to become stronger; even if he dies in the process, Marika knows for sure that he will return because the Grace can revive him when the moment arrives.
    - I think Marika's ideal is to have Godfrey (or any of her child) to retake the throne while destroyed the Elden Beast; we Tarnished are probably her last resort if all of them failed, but in the end her goal of kicking out GW will be achieved regardless.
    - Marika basically sacrificed herself for the LB, doesn't matter what the outcome will be, she will die and took the control of GW down with her.

    • @andyknightwarden9746

      I think she will be in convalescence for a long time, but that eventually she will regenerate. She _is_ the Elden Ring after all. By repairing it, we repair her. It may take a long time, however. If what Mr Martin told us about the length of the Shattering War is true, her body has been slowly falling to pieces for 5,000 years.

    • @koosman2903
      @koosman2903 Рік тому

      I totally agree, my interpretation is that Marika realized that the Elden Beast and the Erdtree are parasites, sent by the Greater Will to feed on the life force of the Lands Between, and she was their puppet for too long. The golden order was a front for all of this, to keep up the façade... She then shattered the Elden Ring as a means of weakening the Greater Will's grip on the Lands Between, and set in motion the reformation of the Elden Ring free of the greater will's influence. Remember, the Greater Will corrupted the Elden Ring at the very beginning by removing the destined death aspect from it

      I 100% agree, I think she banished Godfrey to protect him and his followers. And after realizing how the Greater Will wants to control everything, slowly planned how to destroy the Elden Ring and Elden Beast. Ranni also wanted to be free of the Greater Will's influence, and who wouldn't, we see how it strives to decimate anything who poses even the smallest challenge. It portrays itself as the embodiment of order but comes to destroy everything which isn't to it's liking.

    With the Grace pointing towards Castle Morne, I like to think it was because of the Frenzy Flame. • @DatAsianGuy
      @DatAsianGuy Рік тому +2

      @@ChaoticNakka the only real problem is, we have no lore telling us, if the three fingers can influence the greater will's grace.
      I think your explanation might be thinking too deep into it, and it's simply the guidance of grace showing us a path to become stronger.
      because obviously grace to some extend is aware of us, but it's only guidance. not fate or determined path.
      we don't have to go to castle morne.
      as an example, guidance of grace also points us into the direction of Ranni, which is kind of weird, when you consider her path is to free the Lands Between from the grip of the greater will. she wants to usher in the age of stars, after all.
      so I wouldn't say that the three fingers influenced the guidance of grace, or else that would also mean somehow Ranni can influence it too, but she makes it obvious meeting us the second time, that she is surprised by our sudden appearance in the carian manor.
      It would also mean that other forces besides the greater will has influence over the guidance of grace.
      and so far I don't think any kind of lore suggest that is possible, but maybe I am mistaken and there is and I haven't heard of it simply.
      but guidance of grace pointing us to several paths, that we don't need to tread, such as Ranni's path or the path to fight Radahn in Caelid, does suggest, that the guidance of grace, even if we might not do something that is needed or even goes against it, it will lead us down that path.
      it could also ultimately lead to the idea that whatever ending we chose, the greater will actually wanted it to happen and dlc, or more likely an elden ring 2, if miyazaki is down for it, might show us how the world has evolved after.

    This was one of your best videos! Actually got a bit emotional. Grace being the direction of challenging yourself is a beautiful interpretation.
    Given this, Guidance of Grace may have been Marika's, and not the Greater Will's to give. If Guidance of Grace was truly only Marika's, this would explain why the Greater Will/Radagon kept her as a suppressed prisoner rather than outright kill her. If she were gone, everyone would know because there would be no grace, and the golden order would fall. Guidance of Grace was her only way to communicate with the outside world, so she came up with a plan. That plan was to create a champion that would be as strong as possible, either Godfrey or, hopefully, someone even stronger who could defeat him. And here's the reason...she only had one shot and wanted someone strong enough to kill Radagon and rid the Elden Beast from the Lands Between. Only one challenger would be able to face Radagon before her secret plan would be revealed, because the Greater Will would likely rather have her dead if it thought she was still a threat.

    A minor point.
    Godfrey states "spurned by the grace of gold." Grace is defined in a religious context as God's favor or blessing. In this context, the grace of gold is the blessing of the Erdtree. And the tarnished were spurned by the Erdtree, meaning that they were rejected by it, denied it's blessings. That's why they are called tarnished, because the Erdtree's blessings faded from their eyes, which shine like gold in the eyes of those who live in the Lands Between.

    I want to provide an alternative view point - There are multiple timelines created, as part of the Elden Ring shattering. While every Tarnished warrior is present in every timeline, only one among each can succeed / has a real chance in each timeline. So in one timeline, it is Bernahl who wins, in another Vyke wins, in yet another, Godfrey wins. The other tarnished in such timelines become demotivated, lose sight of grace, or fail for some reason ( Recusants and Bloody Fingers could be a reason). This is one reason why Gideon freaks out when he learned the truth - the process is endlessly repeating with no permanent solution.

    I thought the gold on the roofs was paint too but I’m not so sure anymore. I think it’s just what happens to things at the base of the Erdtree. The grass and trees on the plateau are a dull gold as well, they surely weren’t painted. Also I’m not sure “painting” buildings is even a thing in this world. It’s not referenced as far as I know and the time period the game is based on was before things like that were common.

Vyke killed two Shardbearers, same as us, possibly even the same ones. As a Warrior it's a way of life to rise through the ranks to become the strongest leader. In Alchemy it is referred to as the Great Work, or the distillation and a purification of metals until it reaches its highest form, gold. This is an alagory for the inner work that you do for your mind, body, and soul until you reach a state of enlightenment. The game is pretty much a metaphor for us doing that. A rising potential new age as the previous one declines and gives way to it. Not unlike the barbarian Germanic tribes rising as the Roman Empire declined, fell, and it's lands were occupied by new leadership. A Great Tree with the appearance of stirdiness, but with rot from within, waiting for a strong gust of wind and storm to split it down the middle.
    The guidance of grace is likely pointing towards large amounts of the Elden Ring's runic power gathered as broken shards and dust fragments that coalesce into the shattered ring. Calling all to gather it, turn it to strength, and be the one who defeats all opponents and collects the most of these fragments to mend the ring into a working order and define the next coming age. As with Godfrey's crucible age, the beginning of a new age is warranted by those who are strong, smart, and wise. Hard times make all of these things necessary, a Dark Age before a new Renaissance Age can happen.

    One of the interesting things about your point about grace guiding us towards the shardbearers -- correct me if I'm wrong (because I honestly don't remember) -- I don't believe Ranni is a shardbearer, and yet the grace points us towards Caria Manor as well, which is how we begin Ranni's quest. It's strange considering Ranni's entire questline and ending is based around ushering in a completely new age that defies the Golden Order and Marika's challenge that you mention in the video. I guess that would be an example of us being tested to see if we would follow in the footsteps of the person that arguably committed the most egregious act against the Golden Order.

    Perhaps the reason we as the player were so succesful, and other tarnished were not, could be because we were given the privilege to turn runes to strength almost right away. Tarnished that come back to the Lands Between don't have the innate ability to grow stronger through runes, with most never having the option. Without this, they would have little chance to succeed. This already cuts a large amount of the competition. Another reason would be that a lot of tarnished died early in their aim to become Elden lord, with grace giving up on them. Lastly, for some random reason, grace is playing favorites for us.
