As an outside looking in of course we know it's truly wrong but they can also plead reason of insanity or delusion. This really only qualifies in cases such as this where the Grandparents themselves didn't do anything and were providing all the finances and were being mislead by John and Sam. It is very rare to get this, but the grandparents clearly as the interrogations went on saw how brainwashed they were. That is how clever Cult leaders and those with anti social disorders really are.

I am one of the Coltharp’s grandkids and I just stumbled across this video. I haven’t seen my uncle in almost a decade but I see my grandparents every few months and they’ve talked about this situation before. I don’t condone my uncle’s actions at all and I think both him and Sam deserve to rot in that cell, but I’m honestly kind of surprised by the comments about my grandparents. They did do nothing to stop John, but there was more going on than they described in the video. I’m not sure if I’m getting the details of this story right, but there was one time my grandpa said that one time John took him and my grandpa out to a hill and held them there for hours at gunpoint, threatening to shoot if they moved, because my grandpa suggested that they would call the police. John did horrible things to them just as he did to the kids and they pretty much couldn’t stop him or else they would be murdered. So the comments saying that they willingly did it are upsetting to me.
Also the comment in the video about him distracting himself from the topic because he’s leaning to the side bothered me. My grandpa has horrible hips and a horrible back and he’s had many surgeries. When he’s sitting he’s constantly leaning and moving like he was in the video. It’s just how he sits.
I already knew about most of the stuff in this video so it wasn’t too surprising, but it was just interesting to see the actual interrogations and such, as someone related to this awful person. This event affected everyone in the family and I actually saw Micah and my cousins right after it happened several years ago (before she shunned our side of the family). Back then I was younger and didn’t really understand the situation much but now I realize how wide the scope was. Its very depressing and outraging that someone in my family is such a horrible person.
The closest I’ve gotten to seeing my wretched uncle in the last few years has been driving past the Gunnison Supermax Prison every time I go to visit my family in Spring City. I hope I never actually see his face though.
man this is a really long comment but I just thought I should share my perspective and also the perspective that my family has had after hearing about more than this video shows from our grandparents themselves. Its been a wild decade.

This is the training we need from law enforcement. They did a great job. Every scenario is different. They have to solve the immediate problem (find the girls) as well as keep in mind the critical procedures that keep the dads in custody. How many times have we seen some silly mistake that leads to a dangerous person being released because a charge won't stick? Sam wasn't able to be charged when they arrested John (im not saying that part was a mistake, necessarily) and he went out and hid those girls. It doesn't taje long for irreparable damage to happen.

Right, like the cop was ready to dangle the dude out of a helicopter and it seems like they are thinking they wont go to prison where these crimes are frowned upon and it's funny. . . . . .they are that disconnected where they have been running crap and that delusional. They have been able to manipulate those around them including their own parents. . . . . . .and they have gotten away with it and think they will continue to.

@@alienfromplanether As long as you get a conviction there is someone doing time who is fine doing much worse than you are willing for people who behave like this. Either they are in solitary the entire time or if they ever hit a general population they are screwed. People in for these crimes don't do well.

When a 4-year-old girl says, "Can they just kill him?" I can't even imagine how much pain & suffering that child has already been through to have those feelings. My very first memory is when I was 6 years old in kindergarten - got yelled at in story time, so I had to go to nap time 30 minutes earlier. Started doing that every day afterward. But this child has such horrific memories at 4, that she asks the honest question of, "Can they just kill him?"

Listening to the officers voices immediately turn soft, calm and sweet each time they speak with the little girls is wonderful!!
