No it doesn't. The girls were freezing yet not one of those officers thought to take off his jacket and wrap it around the girls. How many times did the officer ask the girls if they were hungry? The first time he asked them if they were hungry another officer should have been sent to get food with that info being conveyed to the girls. Asking 2 or 3 more times?! The little girl who didn't want to come out of the barrel, a) the officer was the adult, kids don't always do what is best for themelves and b) the first priority is the overall physical well being of these girls.. She should have been immediately picked up and taken to warmth. Wrap that rug thing around her or the officer's jacket, anything. just get her to warmth. Listening to these cop talking to these little girls they were clearly not completely comfortable interacting with kids and they're probably all fathers. There is a YT video of cops raiding a motel room where a man who had kidnapped a 7 yr girl was holed up with the child. The man kept her naked. A cop immediately picked her up to get her away from that situation with and a 2nd cop, maybe 10 seconds later, asked "can we get her a blanket or a towel" and covered her. They were both male cops and they not only were their priorities right, the way they were so comfortable talking to her, these are men who interact with their own kids all the time.

I am one of the Coltharp’s grandkids and I just stumbled across this video. I haven’t seen my uncle in almost a decade but I see my grandparents every few months and they’ve talked about this situation before. I don’t condone my uncle’s actions at all and I think both him and Sam deserve to rot in that cell, but I’m honestly kind of surprised by the comments about my grandparents. They did do nothing to stop John, but there was more going on than they described in the video. I’m not sure if I’m getting the details of this story right, but there was one time my grandpa said that one time John took him and my grandpa out to a hill and held them there for hours at gunpoint, threatening to shoot if they moved, because my grandpa suggested that they would call the police. John did horrible things to them just as he did to the kids and they pretty much couldn’t stop him or else they would be murdered. So the comments saying that they willingly did it are upsetting to me.
Also the comment in the video about him distracting himself from the topic because he’s leaning to the side bothered me. My grandpa has horrible hips and a horrible back and he’s had many surgeries. When he’s sitting he’s constantly leaning and moving like he was in the video. It’s just how he sits.
I already knew about most of the stuff in this video so it wasn’t too surprising, but it was just interesting to see the actual interrogations and such, as someone related to this awful person. This event affected everyone in the family and I actually saw Micah and my cousins right after it happened several years ago (before she shunned our side of the family). Back then I was younger and didn’t really understand the situation much but now I realize how wide the scope was. Its very depressing and outraging that someone in my family is such a horrible person.
The closest I’ve gotten to seeing my wretched uncle in the last few years has been driving past the Gunnison Supermax Prison every time I go to visit my family in Spring City. I hope I never actually see his face though.
man this is a really long comment but I just thought I should share my perspective and also the perspective that my family has had after hearing about more than this video shows from our grandparents themselves. Its been a wild decade.

This is the training we need from law enforcement. They did a great job. Every scenario is different. They have to solve the immediate problem (find the girls) as well as keep in mind the critical procedures that keep the dads in custody. How many times have we seen some silly mistake that leads to a dangerous person being released because a charge won't stick? Sam wasn't able to be charged when they arrested John (im not saying that part was a mistake, necessarily) and he went out and hid those girls. It doesn't taje long for irreparable damage to happen.
Good on the officers for not jumping the gun. They managed to get exactly what they needed at that moment, knowing the rest will come later.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that the officers should have jumped the gun. They acted so professionally and were so sweet to the girls being worried about their well-being and it was absolutely the right thing to do. I'm saying that I wouldn't have been able to keep it together, like they did. I don't have children of my own but this Sam had me shaking with rage.@@IllustriousCrocoduck

@@IllustriousCrocoduck Yeah the officers had immense restraint and patience, but you gotta admit theres a far more cathartic way to get answers out of such an individual.

Those elderly parents should’ve gotten the same sentences. That’s BS they didn’t know what was going on. 48 hours in a holding cell and 2 weeks of house arrest isn’t shit. They are as sick as their son.

Crazy how Sam was soo concerned that CPS would hurt the girls in some way that he’d rather them sent directly to their mothers… but hid them alone in barrels overnight in the freezing dessert while he fled the scene?????

If he kills them, they ain't going to CPS. So, mission accomplished?
They know what they've been doing is terrible, would be giving them too much credit to say otherwise. Similar to the "grandparents", they knew things are messed up, they chose to close their eyes and roll with it.
All of them can pretend as much as they want, that gut feeling inside that what they are doing is not right, was always there. Can clearly see it in the interrogations.

Because CPS has a way of getting information out of kids. The last thing he wanted was a psychologist getting ahold of them.

Yeah I think about it kind of often given my fascination with true crime! 😭 I understand that lots of people are apprehensive about the idea of a having a “nanny state” or a “surveillance state” or whatever but when it comes to these home schooled kids with no outside eyes on them… I just don’t like it! Those are _perfect_ conditions for abusers and neglecters to run wild!! What’s going on in there?? Are they learning to read? Is there electricity in the home? I want someone going in there to make sure those kids are fed and warm!

Cthey need to stick to reading writing and arithmetic and leave the politics and religion to the parents. Seems public school system thinks they have more rights than the parents. It’s disgusting.
