I find it funny that some people online are calling the show “woke”, when in reality, the show bends over backwards to NOT discuss race, gender, or anything like that. The show took a really colorblind approach Setting it in the 40s but not acknowledging the racism, sexism and homophobia back then threw me off. Felt like more of an aesthetic than a period piece
The only thing I don't like about it is the obvious holding back there was at times (when it comes to violence) and how weak Batman was. But BTAS is still top tier Batman show. Why the hell is Penguin a different gender in Caped Crusader bruh? BTAS >>>>>

I disagree. I don’t think Harley knew Bruce was Batman when she said, 'we will figure out that childhood trauma.' This insinuates that she doesn’t know why Batman is doing this. Everyone in the show knows how Bruce's parents died, so that itself would answer her own question. If she knew Bruce was Batman, she would have told the GCPD in previous episodes instead of risk having her operation exposed.
Comparing it to BTAS just makes it look so much worse than it actually is. But looking at it objectively as a Batman show I enjoyed it. It has some pretty interesting concepts and ideas and the all though I am not a fan of the animation in some scenes, it’s not horrible. Bruce and Batman are handled really well and Batman is cool, really cool. Batman’s design is cool and his voice is excellent. All in all it’s a solid 7/10.

The ghost episode definitely subverted my expectations. I was so confident it was a stunt performed by the guy trying to sell the house so maybe he could get more money and keep it but no it’s just… a ghost. I thought it would be a Scooby Doo type thing but Batman actually sends a spirit back to hell. Maybe I’m the problem but I wasn’t expecting it to be so surface level of a threat. Also the concept of only stealing from the poor is so fucked up it’s kinda funny.
one thing of note that really interests me is that the guy who helps them, when he returns at the end, actually dresses in the outfit of the Gentleman ghost in the mainline media. so i expect we may see him again under the same moniker as the ghost.

What interests me is that they’re all orphans, meaning Dick doesn’t seem to be a part of Hayley’s Circus, meaning he didn’t get his acrobatic background from his parent. I wonder how they’ll approach them in the next season.
I found it weird that Bruce was a bit of a dick to Alfred at first, not even calling him by his first name, but came to appreciate that growth in the ghost episode where he realizes Alfred would literally die for him and respected him a lot more.
Aye. I like that about this Batman. They're making him brutal but acknowledging it and having him change. It also works as inspiration was taken from the much more brutal 1940s Batman, so it also aligns to their inspiration that he's willing to bully cops, ram criminals with a car, etc. This Batman is learning to be a hero beyond violence. Great characterization especially with their inspiration in mind.

@@davetheman-jl8jh my biggest problem is that the series doesn't feel like Batman. It feels like he goes on the back burner a lot of the time and none of the episodes are a true mystery. A good Batman show has us figuring out the situation as Batman does, we see twists and turns as Batman sees them. It feels like Barbera does a lot of the work and Batman kind of just stumbles into her investigation.

Like Bill Finger, Paul Dini has been overlooked in BTAS and his major contributions to the Dark Knight mythos. He wrote some of BTAS’ best and most memorable episodes and co-created Harley Quinn. Never was his absence more keenly felt than this show. Bad writing is this show’s Achilles heel.

2004’s The Batman’s Selina managed to go on cat burglaries while having her bills paid and living by herself in a penthouse. Also, she never got arrested in any of her appearances of that series. That Selina/Catwoman is the G.O.A.T. in terms of animation.
Seeing people try to compare BTCC to BTAS is just sad, man. The team knew that they couldn't outdo BTAS at what it already did superbly, so they did their own spin on the formula, I think it's commendable. Also Bruce awkwardly bumbling through social interactions he no doubt rehearsed in the mirror will never not get a chuckle out of me, poor man.
yeah im ngl this show was fire, a lot of people are comparing it to something else rather than seeing it as its own thing. as its own story and retelling it feels good and some changes feel good like Harley being serious and Clayface being actually really cool. i like how he really doesnt have much at all bc its the 40s, but i think they coulda played w the setting a lot better.
I say it’s a serviceable show with fun stuff, but not really a lot unique to the Batman mythos. The characters were alright, but Batman himself feels undercooked and that’s partially due to the voice actor’s performance being forgettable to me. I guess the most interesting parts were Harley Quinn and Two-Face, but even those made me question what the writers were exactly try to do with them. Didn’t hate it, but it’s not really something I would be interested in going back to.
It felt like an imitation of Kevin Conroy, but specifically when he was only starting out as Batman, and he had that weaker performance that got a lot better over time.

I think you're under the impression that this is supposed to be exactly like btas. But it's not, it's similar in a lot of good ways, and some of the character changes I didn't like too much either. But this is a different universe for batman being the 40s. They didn't need to make gordon black, quin Asian, or penguin a woman, but thankfully it's just appearance. They don't cram their identity down your throat by talking about the racism and struggles back then. As long as you can accept it's a different story, it's really a great show. And it's only the first season
Definitely an over hyped show in my opinion. I would say about half of the episodes are great but the other half are beyond mediocre. Like sure, it had some good content but people acting like this is the second coming of the BTAS are poorly misguided. I would say the biggest issue this show suffers is the pacing and story telling. The show only being ten episodes with each only being about 20-25 minutes long seriously damaged the plot and just felt like they had to cram a bunch of unknown characters along with balancing the storylines of people like Harley and Two Face. Let’s not forget about the showrunners also trying to make this series fit for a “modern audience.” I thought the obvious in your face political messaging was just really distracting such as the Penguin being gendered swapped for absolutely no reason. They didn’t even try to do anything interesting with the character. Nothing about her personality screamed “yeah this is the Penguin.” Replace her with any other generic female gangster and you would’ve gotten the same result. Harley Quinn’s Bi sexuality was also another issue I had. Not the fact that she has a lesbian relationship as I could care less (plus it’s been established for a while now) but the fact that the whole point of her being in relationships with other female characters was her breaking free of the Jokers grasp on her life. Such a wasted character development moment.

I totally agree, Harley Quinn works better when she is with Joker. Even though there relationship was toxic they have great chemistry when they are on screen together.
I am the opposite, Harley existing without the Joker’s influence is something different, especially considering how different this version of Harley is in costume. Which I appreciate taking these risks to do different interpretations of these characters which is what BTAS did.

batman isnt even the main character that instantly ruined the show for so many people, including myself. Everything else is average at best nothing stands out in particular but the "wokeness" of the show. I personally dont mind it but if thats all you have to fall on, your show isn't going to be received well

Batman is the main in most Batman media, and Caped Crusaders deal of having him be a mysterious guy works better if the camera isn't on him as much. And even if you don't like the new villain takes, they are definitely doing new takes on established villains, while taking stock of their histories and avoiding stepping on the toes of other shows. It's perfectly serviceable as a series, and the existence of minorities and women is definitely not the source of it's flaws either lmao; it's not like they even really handle them as a topic outside of a couple lines from Montoya and Gentleman Ghost
I thought the show was a 3/10. Batman felt like a side character to Renee and Barbara. I don't understand why they set this in the 1940s they didn't play with that. Harley Quinn and Catwoman were the worst things here, in my opinion. Hamish did a good job with Batman/Bruce Wayne. The Supernatural aspect worked here like I thought it would as Batman and Supernatural mysteries are made for each other. It allows him to be at his finest as a warrior and a super genius polymathic intellectual while keeping him close to his roots as the world's greatest detective. With that being said I have been very disappointed with Matt Reeves Batman in both animation and Live-action.
Yeah I agree I finished episode 3 recently and I’m not really feeling that they’re making full use of the setting. As early as episode 1 it already fails at reflecting the time period set in the 20’s-30’s. Gotham still has corruption and classism, but racism is ignored? For all of the people complaining about changing peoples races and how woke it is, I find it funny how the show essentially requires you to forget that segregation was ever a thing. Considering Jackie Robinson, the first black baseball player wasn’t allowed into the major Leagues until 1947, you don’t get to set the show in the 30’s and then say “look at our black police chief, public defender and judge as well as our openly gay lesbian detective with her Asian therapist girlfriend who can make out in public with no problem!” They are trying to have it both ways, be clean and politically correct...while also dealing with some message about politics and race. Either stick with the setting or don’t use it. A part of the reason why the original series managed to feel more like a coherent period based world, despite the fact that it was obviously a mix of periods, was simply through the fact that it being mixed meant that the things that wouldn't fit into an actual 30s-40s aesthetic wasn't out of place because of the contemporary mix grounding them. This feels more like a world that's technologically stuck, while simultaneously being socially ahead and behind itself. In other words, contradictory.
I really liked Harley's characterization. There's one line that I think actually sums up her entire mental space, and that's when she was talking with Barbara and Renee where they were stating a few problems they were having, she says excitedly "Let's roleplay!". This informs her entire psyche in one two word sentence, as when considering her actions, that's exactly what she does. She puts herself in the role of the "jester". She forces her patients into the roles she deems fit for them and how they act, their personalities. She assigns roles to everyone for them to use as outlets of what they're actually like. This includes herself, where her Harley Quinn identity is obviously her just venting out her actual frustrations, materializing(so to speak) how she actually feels, being the one that has to sit down and listen to them ramble about selfish, non-problems, her patients that view themselves as better, as kings, where as she's there really only to entertain their venting; to be their jester. It's also how I feel she figured out Batman is Bruce Wayne, as he uses the exact same method to vent out his issues. Then pair that with she having been able to tell he was putting on a mask during their actual talks and conversations, and just connecting the dots that Batman would have to have a lot of money, she probably figured it out through that, as she's strangely enough very familiar with what he's doing, just in a different way. Very cool Harley Quinn interpretation that I really like, I honestly might like her better than the modern Harley Quinn(the crazy pixie dream girl one who just does random shenanigans for random shenanigans sake).
I’ve seen some clips of Harvey Dent before he becomes Two Face. I didn’t like how they turned him into a bit of an arrogant 80s high school jock(his attitude I mean). It felt off. Also I’m just gonna say it, the penguin being female is weird. Like REALLY weird. For me, it just doesn’t work. I still think the best version of the penguin is from the Telltale Batman season 1. Still, I’ll watch all the episodes for the show later on. I do like the art style.
They tried to make her an homage to the real life gangster Ma Merkel (she also had sons who helped her with her criminal activities) but it just ended up having the character feel one note.

Penguin has pretty much always been a one note mobster type criminal, the most depth you get from his character is that his family losing its wealth and his physical condition leave him with an inferiority complex which he compensates for with his gangster persona. Not very much going on there, still a super one note character.
I certainly enjoyed this show, My main gripe is that in the final episode of the show, they tried to bait people with batman firing a gun at a man as if he would actually do it when several fingers point to the character not doing that. I'm just frankly a bit tired of that cliche in media with any character they're vaguely threatening to throw off the deep end when you know they won't. as for my overall thoughts I'm very excited to see what they do with HIM in the next season after they teased it, and am interested in what theyre possibly going to do with the gentlemen ghost and Alfred with what they set up there with the spirit dude wearing the traditional Gentlemen Ghost outfit and Alfreds secret, also a possibility of seeing Bullock redeemed would be very cool with how they started him with the common interpretation of him being a corrupt cop and twisting it into him being around bad people and being dragged down with them.

The moment could of been better if he actually did shoot him and later realizes what he's done and vows to never let his anger take the better of him to that extent. That would’ve added so much emotion to the scene.
I wished they just did a modern take on the Golden Age comics instead of doing their own weird thing. Clayface was the only episode that fulfilled that premise and I'm disappointed by some writing decions like the new Harley Quinn. But I actually liked the Penguin, just wished she got more than only one episode.
I cant wait for season two, i do feel like this show couldve used more episodes to flesh out batman especially but im very excited with what we got. Its a mox of year one and the animated series
I definitely agree that while not perfect, the show is pretty solid. My only few issues are a few of the villains, them being penguin and harley who I think could've had their characters handled better. Maybe its just me but I think they couldve driven the "hopelessness in helping people" angle with harley better, not only to parallel batman's hope and compassion in other's redemption(every good batman villain mirrors him), but also make that theme of the show stronger. As well as this I think her romance with Montoya is kinda forced. It feels like it's only there to give Montoya a reason to be sad that Harley's a crook, since she didn't have an established relarionship with her like Babs. Speaking of, I think if they'd focused on Babs' relationship with Harley and made Quinn more villainous, it might've been perfect, at least imo. Past that, its a really cool take on the character and makes her stand as a proper batman villain without Joker in a cool way. It's creative, works, and focuses on her therapist side, an aspect we've hardly seen focused on past plot convenience. Anyhoo, this comment is a bit long already so all ill say on penguin is that ANY penguin version, regardless of anything else, needs three things: They must be insecure, hateful, and classy. They nail the last thing, but past that kinda feels shallow. She could've been a stronger character if they fleshed her out; Maybe she wanted to dance when she was young and was mocked by girls because of her body, and she dances now out of spite. Idk, ive thought of making a video rewriting her but i know jack about making vids lol. I think the shows a 7.5-8 out of 10. Hoping to see more obscure villains next season. Not expecting the best, but im hoping for better. Good stuff so far. Ps, if youve made it this far have a cookie. Cheers.
I liked it and I think it’s for B:TAS fans since it feels similar to it but also slightly different and like it can stand on it’s own as it’s own thing but it’s like a celebration of B:TAS
The Batman in this sounds like a younger version of Kevin's Batman I hate that everyone compares this show to BTAS just let it be it's own thing! I love that we focus more on how other people react to Batman it adds a bit of mystery to him It's nice that we see Batman have basic gadgets because he's early in his career plus i love the ascetic and seeing something show Batman in his 1st suit I've been using it so much in Batman Arkham Knight recently Also damm they made Harley so seductive and thicc!!! 9/10
The show was pretty good in my opinion. I wish the show was paced slower to build up Harvey, Harleen, Selina, Alfred, Gordon, & Barbara. I felt that having a villain per episode kind of set back these characters and Batman shooting the gun at Flass for killing Harvey kinda fell flat for me. I thought how Bruce was shown to be manipulative and cold was interesting, like telling Barbara she shouldn’t have tried to save Harley or Bruce visiting Harvey moreso to get information for Batman than actually help Harvey by being sincere. I’m hoping next season they go a bit slower with a focus on certain fewer villains and more on Bruce’s morals.
I wish that the episodes were a bit longer kinda like how Arcana’s episodes are. I was sad, that they killed Harvey off so fast. I was expecting more of him but maybe they’ll bring in another Two Face. Maybe his sister? But we have to see. I love seeing Gentlemen Ghost in this show because I haven’t seen him since Batman: Brave and the Bold. I’d loved his banter, with Batman in the show. so I was happy that they brought it back! The scene, with Batman and Natalia was really touching. If you can’t see Batman holding up a child, then you don’t know what you’re doing with the character. ( surprised that they made her into a child in this but it was a fun experience tbh. Along with the cameos. ) this show is an 8/10 for me! 7/10 is fair, but anything lower than that is crazy. This show is not BTAS! Stop comparing each other and enjoy it how it is. Let the writers, do their own thing, and let them cook!
It was pretty bland, it felt so empty and plain. The animation was lacklustre, the dialogue was questionable, the changes to characters were more odd than cool, etc. A show that pretty much did everything this show tried to do but better is The Batman (2004). It manages to be unique whilst remaining faithful, and the actual writing quality is far superior as well.
I gotta say, Batman Caped Crusader is a good companion piece to fleicher superman as far as aesthetics go..Also I generally liked the show, just how i like the current Amazon Like a Dragon Adaptation..I judged them based on their own merits

It’s supposed to show the sides of Harvey fighting for control, it’s not bad writing. But i do think the execution could have been a tad better especially since he dies in his second episode.
I like when writers make Harvey have his two face personality before he gets acid thrown him and that what makes the two face personality the dominant one
Ngl, I would have loved a batman show focusing on the aftermath of wwII, His Utility belt could’ve been a Vest type thing and would focus on PTSD and racism and yeah.
Both are great, have great art atyle, compelling storylines and good character development, i like TAS for how comic-like it feels, the look of it's shadows, it's music and entertaining characters... But also like caped crudader for the development for batman, it's more detective feel, the fresh new look but embracing the roots
I really enjoyed this series way more than I expected to. The semblance of BTAS with an older setting was great. I got excited just seeing the opening credits the first time with that classic font on the names. Admittedly, it took a loooong time to get used to Batman's voice for me. Seeing a BTAS inspired look always had me expecting Kevin's voice, but I eventually got used to it and enjoy it quite a bit. I appreciate the lengths this show took to stay somewhat grounded, like Clayface can't just turn into a puddle and morph completely into other people. But then you got Gentleman Ghost and homegirl with the dementor powers... uhhh, strike my previous statement... but anyway 😅 Harvey's accident affecting the other side of his face had me really confused. Of all the things the show changed, it was one I wasn't happy with... until it's essentially explained why. Well played, Bruce Timm. Had a good time with this show and hoping it continues with that same vision and passion!
There were things I liked and things I didn’t like, my favorite episode is episode 6 with onomatopoeia but I did not really like how they changed the penguin nor did I like how they portrayed Harvey dent it was like he was a bad guy from the beginning so when he becomes two face he is basically the same also I did like how they did clay face did not like how they did Harley Quinn though
I watched it and it was so bland it took me out of the story and reminded that I could be watching another animated Batman series you know like the Batman the animated series
It was good. It wasn't perfect. They really did rush Harvey's fall into madness... But other than that, no real complaints. Some cringe whiners are having mental breakdowns over boobs and melanin, so I just ignore them and judge the show on merit.
I did have a problem with all of the changes, but I gave it a chance and it did grow on me. Yeah, they changed some things, but it's actually well done. This might just be me but I kinda feel like Two-face was rushed and almost forced in a way compared to the gradual build up like from BTAS just for him to be killed off pretty much immediately after.

My take is... it's a very good show but it's not quite great. Batman TAS presented a truly new look and tone for animated shows. And that look and tone was well integrated - it was basically a mashup of Fleischer art deco look and anime. And they integrated them into a new style. Caped Crusader tries that type of thing. It wants to integrate the TAS look with an angular style and a silver age sensibility with a more serious tone. That could work but it feels like maybe they needed another month of cooking to truly mix all those ingredients - it doesn't quite do it. It's very close but not quite done cooking yet.
There is a big difference between Bill Finger and Bob Kane era Batman vs Bruce Timm’s own fanfiction writing of Batman lol This show was Bruce Timm’s fan-fiction of Batman rather than a respectful adaptation of 40s Batman Detective Comics.
Honestly, I feel like like it’s pretty shallow to call the show “bad” or “woke” simply for having characters race swapped. The show runners have made things clear on their approach to the 40s aesthetic. They don’t intend on a 100% accurate depiction of the time period. If it were to be that, then there wouldn’t be any ghosts or masked vigilantes dressed as animals in the show. There are problems with the show, but it’s certainly better than most of what’s being pushed out by Prime, and certainly hyper-fixating on race or gender is a tired point of needless argument, instead of talking about whether or not the characters are written well. Even if you want to be pessimistic and simply say the race swapping was a cash grab, well, most people are smart enough to see that. Why else would everyone be complaining about it. Anyway, I do think the show has some weaknesses but it’s certainly not a bad adaptation of the character or the mythos.

I am going to do a Disagreement Knight over this show, but this is the inverse of my reading of this series. There is more I dislike about the show than I like. Also I just go over videos that I disagree with if no one wants to argue with me on stream. Thanks for the title Colin. Your opinion aren't wrong per se, but you are looking at the bright side, and I am seeing the dark side in this series.
Hearing every other episode after the first is better is kind of reassuring, I gave up after the first did next to nothing for me. I agree on liking some of the details like Bruce slipping between his Batman and Bruce Wayne persona, I like Bullock leaving the suspect handcuffed, I think setting up Harvey as a bit of an asshole and conman before he even becomes Two Face is potentially interesting, as is giving Penguin 2 kids who are now full grown adults, I also like how Batman is kind of like this myth or urban legend in his early days, I think Batman in his first few years is my favourite Batman era, and also why Arkham Origins is my favourite of the Arkham series. I also love Batman as a noir detective story, and one that seems to be taking on a fair bit of influence from the 90s cartoon, my favourite version of Batman and favourite cartoon ever made, surely this must be a slam dunk for me then right... right? Well no, while some small details and influence are nice and all, the overall presentation and writing in that first episode at least was suuuuper lacking to me. Every and I mean every single episode of the 90s show, or even the 2000s animated show "The Batman" or the Superman or Justice League animated series, always has this overall feeling of satisfaction by the time it wraps, even if the ending isn't a full positive one, it always leaves me wanting more because the journey was so fun and engaging and stylish to watch unfold. But here? Designs, backgrounds and animations are incredibly flat and lifeless, voice acting while I don't blame the VAs I think it's more of a direction problem is just very flat across the board, with some characters like Penguin and her son I feel completely mismatching their voice to their character design. The plot moves along in a really amateur and rushed manner. We set up a potential mystery with another gang leader working against Thorne, only for Batman to immediately unravel that mystery in the quickest interrogation scene I've ever seen in any Batman material, and also the least satisfying one too. While normally the goons or lackeys he interrogates usually gives him a part of the info he needs to move forward. He kind of just immediately reveals the main mystery set up by the episode, completely knocking the wind out of its sails, and making the penguin reveal super anti-climactic. And that's kind of how I'd describe that first episode as a whole going into it with high expectations, super anti-climactic. Maybe I'll give the rest of the season a chance now tho, but that first episode really did sour my impression, and I have a feeling at least in terms of how the show is presented it's not gonna get much better, but at least maybe the plot and character writing will.
While I do agree the show has its ups and downs, I still enjoyed it for what it was. And I think if this show continues past season 2, it will have found its footing.

I think that Caped Crusader ain't a bad show, but it def feels like it's missing something. Episodes like the ones featuring Nocturna, Gentleman Ghost and Clayface I'd say were good but there are different things that drag it down (Ex: making Penguin a woman doesn't make things interesting, I didn't feel too bad for Harvey getting acid on his face cuz he was kind of a smug dick for a good chunk of the show, Barbara having more focus than Batman, etc). The art in the show, while looking good at times, doesn't feel as expressive or as dynamic as it should be. Its neat to have a Batman show that does something different and I hope that the next season (hoping that the show gets renewed) will be better.

I disagree. I don’t think Harley knew Bruce was Batman when she said, 'we will figure out that childhood trauma.' This insinuates that she doesn’t know why Batman is doing this. Everyone in the show knows how Bruce's parents died, so that itself would answer her own question. If she knew Bruce was Batman, she would have told the GCPD in previous episodes instead of risk having her operation exposed.

Comparing it to BTAS just makes it look so much worse than it actually is. But looking at it objectively as a Batman show I enjoyed it. It has some pretty interesting concepts and ideas and the all though I am not a fan of the animation in some scenes, it’s not horrible. Bruce and Batman are handled really well and Batman is cool, really cool. Batman’s design is cool and his voice is excellent. All in all it’s a solid 7/10.

The ghost episode definitely subverted my expectations. I was so confident it was a stunt performed by the guy trying to sell the house so maybe he could get more money and keep it but no it’s just… a ghost. I thought it would be a Scooby Doo type thing but Batman actually sends a spirit back to hell. Maybe I’m the problem but I wasn’t expecting it to be so surface level of a threat.
Also the concept of only stealing from the poor is so fucked up it’s kinda funny.
one thing of note that really interests me is that the guy who helps them, when he returns at the end, actually dresses in the outfit of the Gentleman ghost in the mainline media. so i expect we may see him again under the same moniker as the ghost.

I found it weird that Bruce was a bit of a dick to Alfred at first, not even calling him by his first name, but came to appreciate that growth in the ghost episode where he realizes Alfred would literally die for him and respected him a lot more.
Aye. I like that about this Batman. They're making him brutal but acknowledging it and having him change. It also works as inspiration was taken from the much more brutal 1940s Batman, so it also aligns to their inspiration that he's willing to bully cops, ram criminals with a car, etc. This Batman is learning to be a hero beyond violence. Great characterization especially with their inspiration in mind.

A good Batman show has us figuring out the situation as Batman does, we see twists and turns as Batman sees them. It feels like Barbera does a lot of the work and Batman kind of just stumbles into her investigation.

Like Bill Finger, Paul Dini has been overlooked in BTAS and his major contributions to the Dark Knight mythos. He wrote some of BTAS’ best and most memorable episodes and co-created Harley Quinn. Never was his absence more keenly felt than this show. Bad writing is this show’s Achilles heel.

2004’s The Batman’s Selina managed to go on cat burglaries while having her bills paid and living by herself in a penthouse. Also, she never got arrested in any of her appearances of that series. That Selina/Catwoman is the G.O.A.T. in terms of animation.

Seeing people try to compare BTCC to BTAS is just sad, man. The team knew that they couldn't outdo BTAS at what it already did superbly, so they did their own spin on the formula, I think it's commendable.

I loved loved loved the visual tribute to Kevin after Batman threw the batarang through Rupert Thorne’s window in the last episode.
I say it’s a serviceable show with fun stuff, but not really a lot unique to the Batman mythos. The characters were alright, but Batman himself feels undercooked and that’s partially due to the voice actor’s performance being forgettable to me. I guess the most interesting parts were Harley Quinn and Two-Face, but even those made me question what the writers were exactly try to do with them. Didn’t hate it, but it’s not really something I would be interested in going back to.
It felt like an imitation of Kevin Conroy, but specifically when he was only starting out as Batman, and he had that weaker performance that got a lot better over time.
It’s pretty bad bro. There are so many things that don’t make any sense, are straight goofy or feel extremely forced.
I give it a 5/10. Me and my brother laughed plenty at how horribly they botched all of the characters.

I think you're under the impression that this is supposed to be exactly like btas. But it's not, it's similar in a lot of good ways, and some of the character changes I didn't like too much either. But this is a different universe for batman being the 40s. They didn't need to make gordon black, quin Asian, or penguin a woman, but thankfully it's just appearance. They don't cram their identity down your throat by talking about the racism and struggles back then. As long as you can accept it's a different story, it's really a great show. And it's only the first season
Batman Beyond is the true successor
Definitely an over hyped show in my opinion. I would say about half of the episodes are great but the other half are beyond mediocre. Like sure, it had some good content but people acting like this is the second coming of the BTAS are poorly misguided. I would say the biggest issue this show suffers is the pacing and story telling. The show only being ten episodes with each only being about 20-25 minutes long seriously damaged the plot and just felt like they had to cram a bunch of unknown characters along with balancing the storylines of people like Harley and Two Face. Let’s not forget about the showrunners also trying to make this series fit for a “modern audience.” I thought the obvious in your face political messaging was just really distracting such as the Penguin being gendered swapped for absolutely no reason. They didn’t even try to do anything interesting with the character. Nothing about her personality screamed “yeah this is the Penguin.” Replace her with any other generic female gangster and you would’ve gotten the same result. Harley Quinn’s Bi sexuality was also another issue I had. Not the fact that she has a lesbian relationship as I could care less (plus it’s been established for a while now) but the fact that the whole point of her being in relationships with other female characters was her breaking free of the Jokers grasp on her life. Such a wasted character development moment.

Batman is the main in most Batman media, and Caped Crusaders deal of having him be a mysterious guy works better if the camera isn't on him as much. And even if you don't like the new villain takes, they are definitely doing new takes on established villains, while taking stock of their histories and avoiding stepping on the toes of other shows. It's perfectly serviceable as a series, and the existence of minorities and women is definitely not the source of it's flaws either lmao; it's not like they even really handle them as a topic outside of a couple lines from Montoya and Gentleman Ghost
I thought the show was a 3/10. Batman felt like a side character to Renee and Barbara. I don't understand why they set this in the 1940s they didn't play with that. Harley Quinn and Catwoman were the worst things here, in my opinion. Hamish did a good job with Batman/Bruce Wayne. The Supernatural aspect worked here like I thought it would as Batman and Supernatural mysteries are made for each other. It allows him to be at his finest as a warrior and a super genius polymathic intellectual while keeping him close to his roots as the world's greatest detective. With that being said I have been very disappointed with Matt Reeves Batman in both animation and Live-action.

Yeah I agree I finished episode 3 recently and I’m not really feeling that they’re making full use of the setting. As early as episode 1 it already fails at reflecting the time period set in the 20’s-30’s. Gotham still has corruption and classism, but racism is ignored? For all of the people complaining about changing peoples races and how woke it is, I find it funny how the show essentially requires you to forget that segregation was ever a thing. Considering Jackie Robinson, the first black baseball player wasn’t allowed into the major Leagues until 1947, you don’t get to set the show in the 30’s and then say “look at our black police chief, public defender and judge as well as our openly gay lesbian detective with her Asian therapist girlfriend who can make out in public with no problem!” They are trying to have it both ways, be clean and politically correct...while also dealing with some message about politics and race.
Either stick with the setting or don’t use it. A part of the reason why the original series managed to feel more like a coherent period based world, despite the fact that it was obviously a mix of periods, was simply through the fact that it being mixed meant that the things that wouldn't fit into an actual 30s-40s aesthetic wasn't out of place because of the contemporary mix grounding them. This feels more like a world that's technologically stuck, while simultaneously being socially ahead and behind itself. In other words, contradictory.

I really liked Harley's characterization. There's one line that I think actually sums up her entire mental space, and that's when she was talking with Barbara and Renee where they were stating a few problems they were having, she says excitedly "Let's roleplay!". This informs her entire psyche in one two word sentence, as when considering her actions, that's exactly what she does. She puts herself in the role of the "jester". She forces her patients into the roles she deems fit for them and how they act, their personalities. She assigns roles to everyone for them to use as outlets of what they're actually like. This includes herself, where her Harley Quinn identity is obviously her just venting out her actual frustrations, materializing(so to speak) how she actually feels, being the one that has to sit down and listen to them ramble about selfish, non-problems, her patients that view themselves as better, as kings, where as she's there really only to entertain their venting; to be their jester.
It's also how I feel she figured out Batman is Bruce Wayne, as he uses the exact same method to vent out his issues. Then pair that with she having been able to tell he was putting on a mask during their actual talks and conversations, and just connecting the dots that Batman would have to have a lot of money, she probably figured it out through that, as she's strangely enough very familiar with what he's doing, just in a different way. Very cool Harley Quinn interpretation that I really like, I honestly might like her better than the modern Harley Quinn(the crazy pixie dream girl one who just does random shenanigans for random shenanigans sake).

I’ve seen some clips of Harvey Dent before he becomes Two Face. I didn’t like how they turned him into a bit of an arrogant 80s high school jock(his attitude I mean). It felt off. Also I’m just gonna say it, the penguin being female is weird. Like REALLY weird. For me, it just doesn’t work. I still think the best version of the penguin is from the Telltale Batman season 1. Still, I’ll watch all the episodes for the show later on. I do like the art style.
They tried to make her an homage to the real life gangster Ma Merkel (she also had sons who helped her with her criminal activities) but it just ended up having the character feel one note.

Penguin has pretty much always been a one note mobster type criminal, the most depth you get from his character is that his family losing its wealth and his physical condition leave him with an inferiority complex which he compensates for with his gangster persona. Not very much going on there, still a super one note character.
I certainly enjoyed this show, My main gripe is that in the final episode of the show, they tried to bait people with batman firing a gun at a man as if he would actually do it when several fingers point to the character not doing that.
I'm just frankly a bit tired of that cliche in media with any character they're vaguely threatening to throw off the deep end when you know they won't.
as for my overall thoughts I'm very excited to see what they do with HIM in the next season after they teased it, and am interested in what theyre possibly going to do with the gentlemen ghost and Alfred with what they set up there with the spirit dude wearing the traditional Gentlemen Ghost outfit and Alfreds secret, also a possibility of seeing Bullock redeemed would be very cool with how they started him with the common interpretation of him being a corrupt cop and twisting it into him being around bad people and being dragged down with them.
A small part of me though that Batman could do it because when Batman wore thag suit in the comic's he did kill people

The moment could of been better if he actually did shoot him and later realizes what he's done and vows to never let his anger take the better of him to that extent. That would’ve added so much emotion to the scene.
I wished they just did a modern take on the Golden Age comics instead of doing their own weird thing. Clayface was the only episode that fulfilled that premise and I'm disappointed by some writing decions like the new Harley Quinn. But I actually liked the Penguin, just wished she got more than only one episode.
I cant wait for season two, i do feel like this show couldve used more episodes to flesh out batman especially but im very excited with what we got. Its a mox of year one and the animated series

I definitely agree that while not perfect, the show is pretty solid. My only few issues are a few of the villains, them being penguin and harley who I think could've had their characters handled better.
Maybe its just me but I think they couldve driven the "hopelessness in helping people" angle with harley better, not only to parallel batman's hope and compassion in other's redemption(every good batman villain mirrors him), but also make that theme of the show stronger. As well as this I think her romance with Montoya is kinda forced. It feels like it's only there to give Montoya a reason to be sad that Harley's a crook, since she didn't have an established relarionship with her like Babs.
Speaking of, I think if they'd focused on Babs' relationship with Harley and made Quinn more villainous, it might've been perfect, at least imo. Past that, its a really cool take on the character and makes her stand as a proper batman villain without Joker in a cool way. It's creative, works, and focuses on her therapist side, an aspect we've hardly seen focused on past plot convenience.
Anyhoo, this comment is a bit long already so all ill say on penguin is that ANY penguin version, regardless of anything else, needs three things: They must be insecure, hateful, and classy. They nail the last thing, but past that kinda feels shallow. She could've been a stronger character if they fleshed her out; Maybe she wanted to dance when she was young and was mocked by girls because of her body, and she dances now out of spite. Idk, ive thought of making a video rewriting her but i know jack about making vids lol.
I think the shows a 7.5-8 out of 10. Hoping to see more obscure villains next season. Not expecting the best, but im hoping for better. Good stuff so far.

I liked it and I think it’s for B:TAS fans since it feels similar to it but also slightly different and like it can stand on it’s own as it’s own thing but it’s like a celebration of B:TAS

It's nice that we see Batman have basic gadgets because he's early in his career plus i love the ascetic and seeing something show Batman in his 1st suit I've been using it so much in Batman Arkham Knight recently

The show was pretty good in my opinion. I wish the show was paced slower to build up Harvey, Harleen, Selina, Alfred, Gordon, & Barbara. I felt that having a villain per episode kind of set back these characters and Batman shooting the gun at Flass for killing Harvey kinda fell flat for me. I thought how Bruce was shown to be manipulative and cold was interesting, like telling Barbara she shouldn’t have tried to save Harley or Bruce visiting Harvey moreso to get information for Batman than actually help Harvey by being sincere. I’m hoping next season they go a bit slower with a focus on certain fewer villains and more on Bruce’s morals.

Animated series fans ate pretty well this year. We got Invincible S2, X-men ‘97, My Adventures With Superman S2, and Caped Crusader.

I wish that the episodes were a bit longer kinda like how Arcana’s episodes are. I was sad, that they killed Harvey off so fast. I was expecting more of him but maybe they’ll bring in another Two Face. Maybe his sister? But we have to see. I love seeing Gentlemen Ghost in this show because I haven’t seen him since Batman: Brave and the Bold. I’d loved his banter, with Batman in the show. so I was happy that they brought it back! The scene, with Batman and Natalia was really touching. If you can’t see Batman holding up a child, then you don’t know what you’re doing with the character. ( surprised that they made her into a child in this but it was a fun experience tbh. Along with the cameos. ) this show is an 8/10 for me! 7/10 is fair, but anything lower than that is crazy. This show is not BTAS! Stop comparing each other and enjoy it how it is. Let the writers, do their own thing, and let them cook!

It was pretty bland, it felt so empty and plain. The animation was lacklustre, the dialogue was questionable, the changes to characters were more odd than cool, etc.
A show that pretty much did everything this show tried to do but better is The Batman (2004). It manages to be unique whilst remaining faithful, and the actual writing quality is far superior as well.
I gotta say, Batman Caped Crusader is a good companion piece to fleicher superman as far as aesthetics go..Also I generally liked the show, just how i like the current Amazon Like a Dragon Adaptation..I judged them based on their own merits

It’s supposed to show the sides of Harvey fighting for control, it’s not bad writing. But i do think the execution could have been a tad better especially since he dies in his second episode.

Both are great, have great art atyle, compelling storylines and good character development, i like TAS for how comic-like it feels, the look of it's shadows, it's music and entertaining characters... But also like caped crudader for the development for batman, it's more detective feel, the fresh new look but embracing the roots

I really enjoyed this series way more than I expected to. The semblance of BTAS with an older setting was great. I got excited just seeing the opening credits the first time with that classic font on the names. Admittedly, it took a loooong time to get used to Batman's voice for me. Seeing a BTAS inspired look always had me expecting Kevin's voice, but I eventually got used to it and enjoy it quite a bit. I appreciate the lengths this show took to stay somewhat grounded, like Clayface can't just turn into a puddle and morph completely into other people. But then you got Gentleman Ghost and homegirl with the dementor powers... uhhh, strike my previous statement... but anyway 😅 Harvey's accident affecting the other side of his face had me really confused. Of all the things the show changed, it was one I wasn't happy with... until it's essentially explained why. Well played, Bruce Timm. Had a good time with this show and hoping it continues with that same vision and passion!
There were things I liked and things I didn’t like, my favorite episode is episode 6 with onomatopoeia but I did not really like how they changed the penguin nor did I like how they portrayed Harvey dent it was like he was a bad guy from the beginning so when he becomes two face he is basically the same

It was good. It wasn't perfect. They really did rush Harvey's fall into madness... But other than that, no real complaints. Some cringe whiners are having mental breakdowns over boobs and melanin, so I just ignore them and judge the show on merit.

I did have a problem with all of the changes, but I gave it a chance and it did grow on me. Yeah, they changed some things, but it's actually well done. Even my father who is very outspoken about being against this said it's actually very well done. I was able to get over the changes and actually enjoy it

This might just be me but I kinda feel like Two-face was rushed and almost forced in a way compared to the gradual build up like from BTAS just for him to be killed off pretty much immediately after.

Batman the animated series is obviously better but this show is still pretty good especially the later episodes and ep 3 was so good
My take is... it's a very good show but it's not quite great. Batman TAS presented a truly new look and tone for animated shows. And that look and tone was well integrated - it was basically a mashup of Fleischer art deco look and anime. And they integrated them into a new style.
Caped Crusader tries that type of thing. It wants to integrate the TAS look with an angular style and a silver age sensibility with a more serious tone. That could work but it feels like maybe they needed another month of cooking to truly mix all those ingredients - it doesn't quite do it. It's very close but not quite done cooking yet.

This show was Bruce Timm’s fan-fiction of Batman rather than a respectful adaptation of 40s Batman Detective Comics.
Honestly, I feel like like it’s pretty shallow to call the show “bad” or “woke” simply for having characters race swapped. The show runners have made things clear on their approach to the 40s aesthetic. They don’t intend on a 100% accurate depiction of the time period. If it were to be that, then there wouldn’t be any ghosts or masked vigilantes dressed as animals in the show. There are problems with the show, but it’s certainly better than most of what’s being pushed out by Prime, and certainly hyper-fixating on race or gender is a tired point of needless argument, instead of talking about whether or not the characters are written well. Even if you want to be pessimistic and simply say the race swapping was a cash grab, well, most people are smart enough to see that. Why else would everyone be complaining about it. Anyway, I do think the show has some weaknesses but it’s certainly not a bad adaptation of the character or the mythos.

Hearing every other episode after the first is better is kind of reassuring, I gave up after the first did next to nothing for me.
I agree on liking some of the details like Bruce slipping between his Batman and Bruce Wayne persona, I like Bullock leaving the suspect handcuffed, I think setting up Harvey as a bit of an asshole and conman before he even becomes Two Face is potentially interesting, as is giving Penguin 2 kids who are now full grown adults, I also like how Batman is kind of like this myth or urban legend in his early days, I think Batman in his first few years is my favourite Batman era, and also why Arkham Origins is my favourite of the Arkham series.
I also love Batman as a noir detective story, and one that seems to be taking on a fair bit of influence from the 90s cartoon, my favourite version of Batman and favourite cartoon ever made, surely this must be a slam dunk for me then right... right?
Well no, while some small details and influence are nice and all, the overall presentation and writing in that first episode at least was suuuuper lacking to me. Every and I mean every single episode of the 90s show, or even the 2000s animated show "The Batman" or the Superman or Justice League animated series, always has this overall feeling of satisfaction by the time it wraps, even if the ending isn't a full positive one, it always leaves me wanting more because the journey was so fun and engaging and stylish to watch unfold. But here? Designs, backgrounds and animations are incredibly flat and lifeless, voice acting while I don't blame the VAs I think it's more of a direction problem is just very flat across the board, with some characters like Penguin and her son I feel completely mismatching their voice to their character design. The plot moves along in a really amateur and rushed manner. We set up a potential mystery with another gang leader working against Thorne, only for Batman to immediately unravel that mystery in the quickest interrogation scene I've ever seen in any Batman material, and also the least satisfying one too. While normally the goons or lackeys he interrogates usually gives him a part of the info he needs to move forward. He kind of just immediately reveals the main mystery set up by the episode, completely knocking the wind out of its sails, and making the penguin reveal super anti-climactic. And that's kind of how I'd describe that first episode as a whole going into it with high expectations, super anti-climactic.
Maybe I'll give the rest of the season a chance now tho, but that first episode really did sour my impression, and I have a feeling at least in terms of how the show is presented it's not gonna get much better, but at least maybe the plot and character writing will.
While I do agree the show has its ups and downs, I still enjoyed it for what it was. And I think if this show continues past season 2, it will have found its footing.

I think that Caped Crusader ain't a bad show, but it def feels like it's missing something. Episodes like the ones featuring Nocturna, Gentleman Ghost and Clayface I'd say were good but there are different things that drag it down (Ex: making Penguin a woman doesn't make things interesting, I didn't feel too bad for Harvey getting acid on his face cuz he was kind of a smug dick for a good chunk of the show, Barbara having more focus than Batman, etc). The art in the show, while looking good at times, doesn't feel as expressive or as dynamic as it should be. Its neat to have a Batman show that does something different and I hope that the next season (hoping that the show gets renewed) will be better.
