  • Exploration of Thurgoland's new and old abandoned railway tunnels just north of the city of Sheffield. Running side by side the new tunnel is now part of the Trans Pennine trail, while the old tunnel is hidden and forgotten, hiding its splendid Victorian stonework.
    Full copyright was obtained for final photograph's for the sum of 3 pints of beer.

Actually you and Pat have inspired me to get a GoPro and film some old abandoned Yorkshire mines up in the Dales (safety). I might also do some guided ones up in the lakes. This vlog is proof, if proof were needed that demonstrates just how much natural talent there is to be found amongst ordinary, ‘every day’ people. UA-cam is full of great personalities, like yourself who confidently share their interests with ‘like minded’ people. Fired by their passion and commitment, they ‘knock the highly overpaid professionals for six’, those who continually seek to inflate their overblown egos and view themselves worthy of ‘celebrity status’, aided by Agents who demand ever higher salaries for their client’s.
    If mainstream TV had the sense to ditch this self obsessed tribe of ‘Divas’ and ‘Prima Donna’s’ who daily inhabit TV Chat Shows, promoting themselves with their banal accounts of their own glamorous lives, perhaps, may be only then will mainstream TV start to stem it’s flagging viewing audiences and make significant cost reductions. Well done Patrick.

    Well Patrick, good to see you doing the underground stuff, including 36DD; despite the...um....
    challenges of dealing with certain aspects of security staff at Stocksbridge Liberty Steels.
    Just spent a lunchtime having another look at the Thurgoland video, and I'm reminded of the old tunnel at Spinkhill, sadly, time did not permit me to venture further on that one since I was also engaged on some allotment work at Stephen Hill, Sheffield......family needs beckoned, but Spinkhill is on the list, probably cycle through that one and try and improve on my filming technique.......practice does eventually make near perfect I hope, anyway, it has obviously worked for you as it will eventually work for me. My wife Sue and I both agree one of the highlights of this year was actually being able to meet and chat briefly with you at Redmires, you are indeed an unforgettable character, so inspiring.

    Here in Holland we had the E loc 1500 series of locomotives, running on 1500 V DC electric current. Those came from England and later ( after their lifetime ) went back to England (except for one locomotive which is in our Railway museum in Utrecht). The locomotive you are standing next to, is exactly the same looking like our 1500 E loc series.
    Maybe you can confirm it was running on 1500 V DC, which is not common in England, that would interest me..
    Very nice video you made again..

    • @barrieshepherd7694
      @barrieshepherd7694 5 років тому +1

      Yes the Manchester-Sheffield-Wath line was 1500 V DC. A full history is here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester%E2%80%93Sheffield%E2%80%93Wath_electric_railway . It was indeed the same system as in the NL, and locos were sent to the NL to assist after the war. The DC system had the advantage of regenerative braking so that energy from braking trains was fed back into the overhead, something that did not come to the AC overhead railways until quite recently.

      Hi Rene yes it was the first electrified railway at 1500 v DC, which was it's downfall as unusual voltage. The last photo at the end gives a bit of info on the trains. Thanks for your interesing comments, all the best Pat

    • @barrieshepherd7694
      @barrieshepherd7694 5 років тому +1

      @@patrickdickinson6492 The voltage is not that unusual - the Sydney & Melbourne Rail networks still use 1500 V DC as do many other countries around the world ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_railway_electrification_systems ). Had it not been for WW2 it is possible that the 1500 V DC overhead system would have been rolled out across the UK.
      Back when the Manchester - Sheffield - Wath was introduced the technology, rather than the voltage let it down. It was potentially efficient as trains braking on the down hill journey would put power back into the OLE to assist trains climbing. I seem to remember that the freight timetable around 1971 was structured so that up and down trains were 'synchronised'. The disadvantage of 1500 V DC is the need for heavier gauge contact and centenary wire, because of the higher currents, and the need for more frequent sub stations, which also have to have rectification equipment.
      Interestingly the old Manchester - Bury third rail system used a near equivalent voltage of 1200 V DC on a side contact rail so that the top of the rail could be shrouded for safety.

    Hello. It is interesting that you say towards the end of your video about doing more video compared to still photography. I have a photographic book I bought in the early nineties, the author said that still photographers are moving to video cameras as the new format in which to establish or further their professional careers. However in the 21st century it would seem there is room for both. The digital movie camera and the digital camera along with digital still & video camera software that is available have a part to play in our lives today. I hope you continue to blend the two on your channel as it works rather well. With the thousands of youtube channels out there it is nice to have a niche channel that you have created. As you probably know, there are those on youtube that make a financial living out of their youtube channels. So why not you? 👍🥇

      Hi yes I will always include still photos especially the light painting ones, the detail is so fantastic, that you can,t get with vidio.
      I have got a new mains powered vidio light which I power off a battery and inverter, gives me about 90 minutes of light, it's made my vidios brighter so use it a bit more, but the still and vidio mix works well, and I like to add audio over the still photos. Many thanks for this great footage also from Berlin! For a rough idea of a train trip in a Black Class 77 back in the 50s, you might like to watch a video from a quite nice train simulation. In that vid, you enter the tunnel from the Wortley (eastern) side about 19::50 minutes - and leave it less than 10 seconds later. ua-cam.com/video/n0oCspW5UmI/v-deo.html (At that vid's start you can see the Black Beauty from outside.) Thanks to Patrick's vid here, I now know a lot more interesting details about this little tunnel - among them, that the northern tube's Victorian style is not shown in the simulation... Cheers, and should you ever come to Berlin, at least one pint is on me...

    Just discovered your videos, thanks for sharing.
    In this video I was interested in the collapse of the tunnel, and so I looked in the Newspaper Archives and discovered a few details that may be of interest. The Huddersfield Chronicle of Sat 21 July 1855 gives a detailed description of the shoring up of the roof.
    The tunnel was also referred to as the Huthwaite tunnel, and on the previous Saturday a goods train had passed through and at a quarter before 9 o'clock two men were working on the bridge that crossed the line, a few more yards on this side of the tunnel. They heard first a noise like a crash of stones, and then a loud rumble in the tunnel that indicated a vast collapse. They ran in opposite directions one towards Wortley and the other towards Penistone and gave notice of what had happened. The train from Huddersfield to Sheffield was cautioned and stopped at the entrance of the tunnel where the passengers proceeded on foot to be picked up by another train sent from Sheffield for this purpose. The sevices were continued with passengers being conveyed by coaches and omnibuses.
    The portion of the arched roof that had fallen was 70 feet (?) from the Sheffield end of the tunnel for a distance of 18 to 20 feet, the width of the roof being about 14 feet. Rubbish clearance began on Saturday evening from both ends and by Monday a narrow passage had been effected. (gives details of work) On Monday fixed centres and other strong beams were fixed in the roof of the tunnel previous to replacing the masonry, but in the afternoon a great quantity of earth and stone fell filling what had been removed, and there several more falls….Best informed theory is that the masonry of the arch had not been so well knit together. The Company are loosing much money, but it is not known how long it will take to restore service.
    All the best, Peter.

      Hi Peter, some very interesting information there, surprising what a bit of investigation can reveal, especially if like yourself you know where to look.
      I was always impressed how they constructed these places with basically just manpower and skill. I dare say they got the tunnel back into service very quickly, no red tape and safety like today.....nice to talk to you, thanks for

    Very nice video as usual, and a few bits of great historical context. Wonderful contrast in the different words for the same objects in purportedly the same language. Over here the 'sleepers' are called ties or in the southern states, "cross-ties". And of course nobody here has ever heard of an earthing cable, it's all "ground" and "grounding". As one of the few survivors of that era, I passed through these tunnels every day as a Guard at Rotherwood Depot. We fought hard to keep the line open but this closure was the final act of some very bitter and twisted men. There had been a vendetta against the Great Central Railway and a vow to close every GC line in the country. The loss of this line is still being felt today. The loco in York museum is one of the fleet I worked with. These were very powerful machines and could move very large tonages over the Pennines.
