You once again take us into a place most would not so much as know of. Thank so much for giving us a tour. Nothing like this exists where I live. As such these videos are all the more enjoyable. Fabulously done.
Well Patrick, good to see you doing the underground stuff, including 36DD; despite the...um.... challenges of dealing with certain aspects of security staff at Stocksbridge Liberty Steels. Just spent a lunchtime having another look at the Thurgoland video, and I'm reminded of the old tunnel at Spinkhill, sadly, time did not permit me to venture further on that one since I was also engaged on some allotment work at Stephen Hill, Sheffield......family needs beckoned, but Spinkhill is on the list, probably cycle through that one and try and improve on my filming technique.......practice does eventually make near perfect I hope, anyway, it has obviously worked for you as it will eventually work for me. My wife Sue and I both agree one of the highlights of this year was actually being able to meet and chat briefly with you at Redmires, you are indeed an unforgettable character, so inspiring.
Thanks Michaela, the photographs really show up the true detail of the tunnel, it's not until I put them on the computer do I see the detail for the first time, thanks Pat

What a fantastic video Patrick! always a treat to sit and watch a video from yourself. This one is an excellent credit to your photography and videography skills! Well done, and look forward your next adventure!
Thanks Damian, I had spent many days in this tunnel, light painting and burning wire wool, so had the chance to take many photos, glad you enjoyed it thanks Pat
Not sure how or why your video popped up in my feed, but wow, you are amazing! Going meticulously though your library & watching each video all the way through! Informative, exhilarating, adventurous, suspenseful & just plain awesome! You rock, definitely one of the best channels on UA-cam! Thanks so much for sharing, awesome awesome content! (I shared this one on Twitter!)
Hi Diane and thanks for those kind comments, I really appreciate them and are so pleased you enjoyed my vidios. I love making them, the initial idea, the research, then the filming and finally editing. It keeps my brain active and I love to be busy, hoping to keep you entertained through out the year, thanks Pat
Victorian Engineering is fascinating, when you consider all what you see was done by hand, hard graft and craftsmanship, all the excavation done by hand hundreds of men and the spoil moved by horse and cart in the middle of nowhere! amazing really. another great video Pat, sounds like York was a jolly boys outing to me ! did you enjoy it.
Hi Roy nice to hear from you, such a amazing peice of Victorian Engineering, like you say built by craftsmen nearly 180 years ago, I wonder how we would go on today, several years planning and years behind date I would think. The tunnel is still there in all its glory, a monument to the men who built it. York was a great day out, or what I can remember of it was, all the best Pat
Another very interesting and informative video Pat, well done. The quality is very good but so is your enthusiasm for industrial history. Look forward to a lot more. Thanks.
Hope you have more disused railway tunnels on your agenda Pat. I'm a full blown railway tunnel nerd. I've been inside the extensive network of mine workings that ajion Box tunnel on the Great Western mainline (don't try this at home folks) many moons ago. Amazing system running for miles under the rural softy south. Blessings on you and your tribe sir.

Great stuff,Pat. Did my first few years on the railway up and down Woodhead. Watched all your vids, some many times, and they are great. Hey up Pat, I enjoy all of your videos, in particular the railway ones. I grew up near a disused line and station near Lincoln, 5 Mile House. It always had my imagination running riot. Mums side of the family hail from Sheffield and knew Fiskerton well as used to come by train for fishing. Ps, be great to buy you a pint on your next 'fishing trip' to Newark! All the best, Rob.
Hey thanks Rob, immediately remember Five Mile House, I fished there on the Witham and the Saxillby drain back in the 1979,s brings back some great memories, thanks Pat
Brilliant Explor Pat , Enjoyed this one! I will have to check this one out myself at some point. I've had a wonder through Barnsdale bar tunnel. You are right! It is a bit of an adventure getting in 🤣👍
As one of the few survivors of that era, I passed through these tunnels every day as a Guard at Rotherwood Depot. We fought hard to keep the line open but this closure was the final act of some very bitter and twisted men. There had been a vendetta against the Great Central Railway and a vow to close every GC line in the country. The loss of this line is still being felt today. The loco in York museum is one of the fleet I worked with. These were very powerful machines and could move very large tonages over the Pennines.
Yes John such a pity the line was closed, it would of been useful if it was running today, I,am glad I got to see the loco that ran on this line at the Railway Museum, thanks Pat
Thanks for documenting and sharing this, especially the closed tunnel. I have often wondered what is in there. We often cycle through the Trans-Pennine tunnel after hiring bikes from Penistone. As a boy a grew up in Deepcar and often played near the Woodhead line in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I remember those Class 76 electric trains that you showed at the end (painted in BR Blue and Yellow at the time) hauling freight through Deepcar Railway Station. Me and my mates used to stand on the footbridge and drop mudbombs on them as they went past! The line is still open between the old Sheffield Victoria Station and Deepcar for the steelworks access at Stocksbridge.
Hi Jason yes alot of what you say I remember, I worked at Deepcar Electricity Substation near the station for many years. You sound like you had a great childhood like we all did at that time. Recently went up on Wicker Arches then realised the Aldwarke to Stocksbridge steel train still used the line so could not really explore it as it was a live line. Thanks for your comments, really know where your coming from, thanks Pat
Great video Pat, really enjoying your stuff. One small point - the new tunnel is the Down tunnel, the old tunnel was laterly used for the Up line, not the other way round. Line direction was Up towards London Marylebone, i.e. towards Sheffield.
excellent deal. 3 pints Eh? amazing photography. also amazing video work. just subbed yesterday, still floored by all the work of you filming the entries and exits of tunnels or whatever it is youre going into.,
cracking video. been through the tunnel a few year ago with my daughter on her bike, might have to revisit and take the grandson through on his bike now.
Great explore and very interesting Pat . I think you should ride that motorbike of yours through the first tunnel and record the lovely reverb .Now that would make a good video . Always a shame to see the old tunnels in a state of neglect when you think about all the men who built them and the time and effort it took . The light painting technique looks fabulous and adds to the quality of the film :)
There is something wonderful about people who despite being thoroughly grown up still look at the world with the excitement of a child. Life is so much better.
Nice video Pat. My mate Noel Adams will enjoy this video very much. He is a train enthusiast. The tour of the tunnels was very interesting but somehow I think I would have enjoyed a few pints in the local pubs too:) Sandy
Hi Sandy, yes I,am sure Noel will like the vidio, such a beautifully constructed place, Sandy if you are ever up in York you will be spoilt for choice for a few pints, 100 pubs in the town centre, luckly it's only 50 minutes away on the train for me, and £12 for return rail ticket, all the best Pat
Thank you for taking us somewhere to which most of us never venture. A fascinating glimpse of Victorian grandeur and vision - what have we lost as a nation?!!!
A very interesting presentation, nicely complied and a good contrast between video and still photography highlighting the features of these two engineering marvels. With an ancestry of 190 years in the mining industry together with an appreciation of railways and railway architecture, I always find the subject of tunnels and tunnelling an absorbing and fascinating one. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rob yes very interesting subject, and better when your family have been involved with the same subject for all those years. I love taking photos that are usually hidden from our view, thank for watching, all the best Pat
great video pat.. love the light paintings.. they show so much detail up.. you should have your own tv show.. I've been to YRM a few times and always enjoyed myself.. brilliant place..
Thanks for that Patrick,I enjoyed it, Was that train at the end the type they used on the woodhead pass,I remember a works outing we had to go to stocksbridge steel works, and I can just remember the line was open then(and a pub nearby)!!, it was all DC ,,,, Thanks again.
@@patrickdickinson6492 I think there used to put power back in the lines , with the trains going down the hillside,I can just remember something, its about 45 years ago, when we were there,.. Those bessemer converter :)
Mr. Dickinson, Thank you for this. You love affair for exploration is bar far amazing and somewhat contageous. Your willingness to document historic places and knowledge behind them is superb. But the best are your captures, they are truely an inspiring art. I love how you compile all of it. Again, Thank You.
Amazing stuff, Patrick, backed up with research and the actual walking through the system. 💛 There is an interesting looking tunnel in the Royal Forest of Dean, near Cinderford.
Hi Christopher, thanks for the kind words, the research is a enjoyable part at the beginning of any explore. Sounds interesting the tunnel in Forest of Dean, just about far, thanks Pat
Very interesting and most enjoyable video that Patrick. There must be an outlet for your wonderful Light Painting Photographs such as Museums, Cafe back walls, even a local Heritage Calendar. Get your Agent on to it.
Another cracking video Pat - the tv people should really pick you up as you’ve got great presentation and natural ability as well as being fearless. Good on you mate keep them coming and stay safe 👍🏻
Hi Pat yet another trip down memory lane thanks for bringing our history alive. If the local authority’s had there way everything would be completely covered or bulldozed 👍
Only two hours in the railway museum? You must have had a thirst on. ;o) Not been to York for nearly twenty years, but there always was a good selection of pubs to be visited. The Tap and Spile by Monkgate used to serve some great ale, and there was a fantastic curry house just over the road. What more could a man ask for? All the best, Pat.
Thanks I think because the railway museum is free then you just call in for can hour or so, you don,t have to get your money's worth and stay there all day, works alot better. Pubs are still great in York, about 100 in the town centre, still a few I have not been in, all the best Pat
I probably spent half an hour repeatedly pressing the button that turned the cutaway Deltic engine. What an incredible piece of engineering. My girlfriend had to drag me away from it. I left my brolly in York Brewery bar...
I use to live in the nearby village of Oxspring as a child. We use to ride our bikes through as children, there were no lights through the tunnel at the time and the walking routes were not fully established then. So many great memories though, I’d love to revisit one day.

Thanks Denny certainly shows up the detail of the tunnel, thanks Pat
They built these tunnels so well like most everything back then... Very interesting Pat... Brilliant video Pat you certainly cracked it there too...
Yes I,am sure this tunnel will around for a long time yet, thanks Pat
Excellent video. Very informative and well produced. Great job.
Thanks Alan
Great video as always, thanks for all the time you put in to make such professional videos.
Thanks Andrew, love all that goes into making the vidios, keeps me and my brain alive and kicking, thanks Pat
Thanks Pat, another fascinating, and enchanting video. Always look forward to watching your latest one. Keep them comming and have a beer for me.
Thanks Ian, I try and vary the content like my interesting do, all the best Pat
Thanks for your comments, really know where your coming from, thanks Pat
such a great bit of filming and history...big thanks Patrick... cheers
Thanks for that Colin
Great video as ever pat. Watched all of your vids now. keep them coming please. 👍
Thanks Adi glad you enjoyed my videos, thanks Pat
Amazing video and I so enjoy the details that light painting gives to photos..... Keep up the good work pat xx
Thanks yes the light painting really shows that stonework up, thanks Pat
Great video Pat, very interesting and well presented as always.
Thanks Danny
Another video we’ll done can’t get enough of them, so informative.
Thanks Jason, more to follow, all the best Pat
Another great video Patrick, thanks for taking the time. So very interesting.
Thanks Mark
Brilliant Pat! Really interesting stuff. You are on cracking form!
Thanks Pete, such a amazing place thanks Pat
Good to see you Pat, wonderful video. You are a one man production team amazing work.
P.S. leave some beer for the other lads!
Yes I like the challenge of filming it all myself, there is always a plan of how I,am going to film it, left a few pints I think, thanks Pat
I just stumbled upon this channel but I'm so glad I did, subscribed!
Thanks hope to keep you entertained through the next year thanks Pat
Great video Pat, really enjoying your stuff. One small point - the new tunnel is the Down tunnel, the old tunnel was laterly used for the Up line, not the other way round. Line direction was Up towards London Marylebone, i.e. towards Sheffield.
Thanks for that Andrew, Pat
Who needs Netflix when we have your cracking videos. Spot on sir. I can't wait until your next post. Cheers pat.
Thank appreciate your kind comments thanks Pat
excellent deal. 3 pints Eh? amazing photography. also amazing video work. just subbed yesterday, still floored by all the work of you filming the entries and exits of tunnels or whatever it is youre going into.,
Thanks for the sub appreciate that, such a great place to film, thanks Pat
Great video again Pat some good information given by you,I do like old railway tunnels I cycled the Monsal Trail yesterday.
Hi Darren yes the Monsal trail well, pity they could nt open Hadron Tunnel and link it all together, thanks Pat
Enjoyed your video tremendously. Thank you. Take care.
Thanks Marsha, glad you enjoyed it, thanks Pat
Another piece of your great work Pat, many thanks. Now, if you could manage Woodhead Tunnel, that would be perhaps your crowning achievement . 😉
I,ll have a look, but, that is a challenge, which I like,,,,,, all the best for 2020, Pat
Thanks for doing these Patrick. I hoped you’d get around to it.
Hi Phil yes a really enjoyable time, such a lot of history, all the best Pat
cracking video. been through the tunnel a few year ago with my daughter on her bike, might have to revisit and take the grandson through on his bike now.
Definitely worth another visit, thanks Pat
wonderfull video Patrick.. lot of efort put in to its making by your good self. Thank you
It was a nice interesting place to spend on a winters day, all the best Pat
Hi Patrick, another great video. Very interesting.
Thanks Andrew
Great explore and very interesting Pat . I think you should ride that motorbike of yours through the first tunnel and record the lovely reverb .Now that would make a good video . Always a shame to see the old tunnels in a state of neglect when you think about all the men who built them and the time and effort it took . The light painting technique looks fabulous and adds to the quality of the film :)
That would sound amazing, with the reverb repeat ING again and again, at least the tunnel is preserved and in good use, thanks Pat
There is something wonderful about people who despite being thoroughly grown up still look at the world with the excitement of a child. Life is so much better.
Yes Malcolm, and I have no intention of growing up at all, more exiting as a child, all the best Pat
Very nice photography. Thanks for exploring, from Arkansas USA.
Nice to hear from the US and thanks for watching, thanks Pat
Nice video Pat. My mate Noel Adams will enjoy this video very much. He is a train enthusiast. The tour of the tunnels was very interesting but somehow I think I would have enjoyed a few pints in the local pubs too:)
Sandy
Hi Sandy, yes I,am sure Noel will like the vidio, such a beautifully constructed place, Sandy if you are ever up in York you will be spoilt for choice for a few pints, 100 pubs in the town centre, luckly it's only 50 minutes away on the train for me, and £12 for return rail ticket, all the best Pat
Thank you for taking us somewhere to which most of us never venture. A fascinating glimpse of Victorian grandeur and vision - what have we lost as a nation?!!!
Such a magnificent price of Victorian Engineering, and so great I can bring it to people, thanks Pat
Pat, a very good one once again. The stills are very good.
Thank you, both tunnels were different , but great places to visit, thanks Pat
enjoyed it Patrick and narrated with well chosen words, no unnecessary padding!🙂
Thanks John
Another excellent video!
Thanks, Pat
Hi yes the fact railway museum is free then it's a great day out or as we do just call in for a hour, then a few pubs, thanks for kind words, Pat
Yes it's the actual train used on the Woodhead line, one of the lads with me recognised it straight away, all the best Pat
Thanks for the kind comments really appreciate it, but I do love putting together all the information and filming, thanks again Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 Your welcome. You bring some of the coolest places on earth to life. Keep'em coming 👍
Excellent video as always pat keep up the good work mate👍
Thanks Dave
Great video Pat. This is my home village now. So glad you done this it makes my walks more interesting. 👍👍👍
Nice p!ace you live Ant, I had worked round the Stocksbridge Deepcar area for many years, thanks Pat
This is why I prefer to watch UA-cam than mainstream tv - really enjoyable video. As a keen cyclist as well, would this be a cycle route?
Yes it's part of the Trans Pennie Trail so perfect for cycling, Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 Thanks Patrick.
@@crok22 I think people think UA-cam is just about funny clips but there's lots of interesting stuff like Patricks.
Makes for a brilliant cycle. Regularly do “pennine equinne” ( a farm further up the line) to penistone and back.
@@chris2ruk Thanks will give it a try.
Very interesting and most enjoyable video that Patrick. There must be an outlet for your wonderful Light Painting Photographs such as Museums, Cafe back walls, even a local Heritage Calendar. Get your Agent on to it.
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement, all the best Pat
Great to see you back on yet again another fab video
Yes took a bit of filming this one, thanks Pat
Another cracking video Pat - the tv people should really pick you up as you’ve got great presentation and natural ability as well as being fearless. Good on you mate keep them coming and stay safe 👍🏻
Thanks Richard got a few more of these lined up for later in year, thanks Pat
Thanks Patrick. Another great video. Hope you enjoyed the beers as well.
Thanks for that such a great tunnel and yes I enjoyed the beers as well, (Robin), I take it, thanks Pat
Fantastic video and very well put together, well done
Thanks Tony
Wonderful Video, esp love the light painting shows the detail in great detail thanks for taking me to places I wouldn’t get to .
For me the light painting really shows the detail of the tunnel up, vidio is ok but not as detailed, thanks Pat
Nice video...the reverb is incredible in there!
Yes new it was going to be good, thanks Pat
Thank you Pat a very nice and informative video. Paul
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks Pat
Hi Pat yet another trip down memory lane thanks for bringing our history alive.
If the local authority’s had there way everything would be completely covered or bulldozed 👍
Yes agree I assume they had blocked this and the ground subsided luckly. Thanks for watching, all the best Pat
Another great video, superb video but would love a tutorial on the still photography techniques. Love camping too
In this same tunnel just before this video I covered my light painting techniques, maybe of interest, thanks Pat
Another interesting video Pat. Look forward to your next video. 👍
Thanks Simon a few more of these at the ideas stage, thanks Pat
Did anyone else note the natural light at about 6:18 minutes into the video ---- outstanding, cheers
Thanks Vaughan
What's so nice about it?
he's the best guy on UA-cam brilliant 👏👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for the kind comments...... thanks Pat
Only two hours in the railway museum? You must have had a thirst on. ;o)
Not been to York for nearly twenty years, but there always was a good selection of pubs to be visited.
@@sarkybugger5009 Sounds a good day out
I use to live in the nearby village of Oxspring as a child. We use to ride our bikes through as children, there were no lights through the tunnel at the time and the walking routes were not fully established then. So many great memories though, I’d love to revisit one day.
Worked at Oxspring replacing some electricity substations many years ago , really in the countryside out there, thanks Pat
Thanks for sharing this with us. Impressive!
It was a pleasure to film and edit, glad you enjoyed it Pat
