It’s not negligence, the parks invest tons of time and money into these rides including maintenance. Each ride is inspected throughout the year. This is a freak incident and no one was harmed because the rides engineers over engineer everything to ensure safety. The ride probably could have ran a year with a broken support before more issues would arise. Not saying it doesn’t need to be fixed, of course it does. But do you notice the nail in your tire before it goes flat everytime? The more important question is “why” why did it crack? And what can be done to prevent that in the future. That is what they are investigating now. You are more likely to die in the car going to the park than in the park itself. Simply facts.
That is NOT a crack; that is an actual break. You can tell that quite easily when you see how the piece above the crack shifts entirely due to vibrations. That would not happen if it were a crack. I'm no engineer...not even close (I spent my career as an Executive Secretary) and it's clear to me that it's a break, not a crack. The man who reported it is an angel in disguise, not to mention a hero. That amusement park owes him a huge debt of gratitude for the disaster he prevented from occurring. Heaven only knows how many lives were saved by his willingness to keep reporting it until an employee finally took him seriously. Those who ignored his message should be fired immediately. As to them "checking the rides every day," obviously that is a huge exaggeration. I would never ride that again and I hope everyone else feels the same way. It should be shut down permanently, in my opinion. In fact, maybe the whole park should be shut down until every ride is inspected by a professional team not in any way affiliated with the park.
The worst part is that the man who found that huge fracture couldn't get an employee who cared. Thankfully he kept trying. It was several hours before the park even closed the ride. They keep calling it a crack but you can see sunlight each time the coaster train went by. Terrifying.
That's not a "crack," it's a clean break at the welded junction of two similar metals. Can't tell from here but likely weld impurities (inclusions) weakening the wall - a manufacturing defect. Can be ground clean & beveled, then welded correctly and ex-rayed to prove all inclusions are ground away and a solid weld is now in place. Note: a quality weld is as strong as the parent metal. Also, over time an weld, notprotected by primer & pain will rust & weaken. This break does not appear to be form rust damage.
I don’t mind finding that an entire support has failed. I would have assumed a certain amount of redundancy is engineered into it. HOWEVER, it is unacceptable that customers are the ones that noticed it when the company claims they do daily inspections.
Usually daily inspections are just making sure that all the safety features are working. Because it is rare that a support breaks or is something that never happened, they don't inspect that.
