Cuttlefish are found in tropical and temperate waters with the exception of North and South America.
Cuttlefish have three hearts and an internal porous cuttlebone which assists buoyancy. They have sophisticated eyes but are unable to discern colour. Their pupils have a distinct curved W-shape. They have eight arms and two tentacles which are extended to catch prey.
Cuttlefish are masters of disguise. Dramatic changes in their appearance can be instantaneous, as seen for example in the accompanying video footage of the flamboyant cuttlefish. Cuttlefish, like other cephalopods, communicate visually through four channels, namely skin colour, skin texture, posture and locomotion. Although cuttlefish are unable to discern colour, their skin colour can nevertheless change instantly to match their surroundings.
When hunting, some cuttlefish display dark waves repeatedly pulsating down their body. It is thought that this may be used to intimidate or perhaps even hypnotize their prey. If threatened, cuttlefish can eject ink as a distraction.
Australian giant cuttlefish were filmed at Point Lowly, near Whyalla, South Australia. All other cuttlefish were filmed in Lembeh Strait, Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.
