Each clip in the accompanying video names the specific nudibranch Family followed by its Species name, according to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).
Nudibranchs are commonly known as sea slugs and are found in most marine environments around the world. More than 3,000 different species of nudibranchs have been identified and their weird shapes and bright colours have to be seen to be believed. The bright colours serve as a warning to potential predators because many nudibranchs are toxic as a result of the food they ingest, which includes hydroids, sponges, anemones and corals.
Nudibranch means naked gill. The gills enable the nudibranch to breathe by extracting oxygen from the saltwater. Dorid nudibranchs have a single cluster of gills on their backs to absorb oxygen, whereas aeolid nudibranchs have numerous cerata covering their backs.
Nudibranchs have primitive eyes which do not provide sight as we know it but are sensitive to light. Their sensory organs are the rhinophores which are sensitive to smell, touch, taste and hearing.
Nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, each possessing male and female genitalia.
These are spectacular and beautifully filmed in action (if you can call nudibranchs active). Some were so stunning they took my breath away. Nudibranchs always make me happy, and it’s just recently I’ve gone from still photos to seeing these videos of them - just knocks my socks off! 😍♥️🧡💜🖤🤍💙
Thanks - so glad you enjoyed seeing them! Hard to believe that there are a few thousand different ones, with their spectacular colours and shapes!
