    I cannot imagine how just taking control of their characters during the "chased by essentially pyramid head" scene could've possibly be fun. I get he's "that guy" but like, it's a gritty horror campaign, your players reactions are the fun of that! I'm glad I'm not the only DM reacting with a "wtf dude, no" with this DM's behavior. And to answer your question, it wasn't me but our forever DM that got a "That Guy" DM to say, in a broken, done-with-our-nonsense tone, "The bandits believe your illusionary rum ham."

      This. I mean, it's possible that a player might be *really* insistent on having their way in terms of characters (as we all know well, you get that type of 'that player' fairly often, though that clearly wasn't the case in OP's story) or that the GM might start out thinking they can get an idea to work and realise later that Nope, it doesn't, but in those cases, you talk to your players like a grown-up, rather than just screw them over.

    I’ve had DMs like this before that seem to want a power trip and completely forget that it’s not a player vs DM game. But then these DMs forget that if they do “beat” a player they are reality itself. Rocks fall, everyone dies. Not very impressive. Impressive is letting a murder hobo character play himself by letting him set off the obvious trap the rest of the table sees, tells him it’s there, and he sets it off anyway and dies after fails two saves.

    I had a DM like this: everything had to go the way they planned, even by randomly adding game-breaking things, like areas where class abilities didn't work unless there was a combact, or by removing things like a race's traits because they were too perfect for the setting. Another player and me had to either accept those changes or make simple characters, unable to explore the full concept we initially had, because we were the most creative/explorative of combos for races and classes. For that, we retaliated by exploiting the most of every single thing we could use.

    • @II-wu7mx
      @II-wu7mx 2 роки тому

      Be more specific, this sounds obfuscatory. What did you do that was not allowed? Are you talking about not being able to fully realize your aarakocra archer or flying and resistance tiefling?

    • @megaspoiler
      @megaspoiler 2 роки тому +4

      @@II-wu7mx A good example could be one 3.5 campaign we did. It was an aquatic setting, with many underwater sessions, so we had to choose a race with an amphibious trait. I was going to make this Human Archivist (the Divine version of the Wizard), with a couple of templates to make a good backstory about a curse from a Sea God and the search for redemption, even if the complessive LEP was +3. These templates were from Bestiary of Krynn, Child of the Sea, and the derivative Accantus. The first was for the underwater breathing, the second for the backstory and to get some defensive abilities (I was the true Healer of the party, so I had to play it safe). The DM would accept my choice, but only if I would lose most of the abilities of the Accantus template, leaving me with only a fire and acid resistance, everything else was gone, not even giving me a plausible in-game reason for why my character had to be like that.
      I tried to appeal, or even changing to another, simpler race, but anything that had good defensive abilities was either nerfed or refused. At the end, I went for a Warforged Fighter, with a full Tank build, progressing to Warforged Juggernaut, with spikes and shield combat, basically untouchable to spite them. Then it got worse, but that is unrelated to them not allowing stuff.

    • @II-wu7mx
      @II-wu7mx 2 роки тому

      @@megaspoiler A backstory isn’t good if you need to be +3 to accomplish it. A large part of determining the quality of a backstory is whether it fits into the story it’s supposed to be feeding in to, part of that is being able to be relatively equal strength to the party, an LEP of +3 argues against your ability to do that. It lists in the source book that children of the sea can become accantus, why was it so pertinent that you be allowed to already have done that in your backstory other than to be stronger than other people? You can do that as a thing during the game as a personal goal, and earning it in that way is much more likely to confer the true benefits of it from the dm.
      A child of the sea as your go to for amphibious already speaks to what your goals as a player are, that’s a +2 right there, and the dm was totally willing to give you every one of those bonuses and even some of the accantus abilities, that’s not tyrannical or stifling bud.
      I also find it interesting that you downplay what the accantus does for you defensively, combined with the +2 con your already getting with the child of the sea to buff the duration of your defensive abilities every hour. 5 dr slashing, effective immunity to grapple or restraint, and true immunity to critical hits paralysis and polymorph spells or effects. You’re upset because you wanted this at the start of the game and the dm said no. The reason you needed such an elaborate backstory to justify it is because it was an improper design for the goals.
      If you’d like a legitimate in game reason you aren’t that it’s because that character you’re trying to be went off with a higher level party he was just about equal strength to before the party of level ones he would be a dominantly strong force in, to the point of being a hinderance to what he could do with a stronger party, showed up.

    • @megaspoiler
      @megaspoiler 2 роки тому +2

      @@II-wu7mx An excellent point. Problem was: the party was already at level 5 from the start, my character would be level 2 to compensate (justified by being a later addition to the rest of the party, because I couldn't join from the start because of work), and I would only get the resistance to fire and acid from Accantus and liquid form. The 5 dr slashing, immunity to grapple or restraint, and true immunity to critical hits paralysis and polymorph spells or effects gained by liquid form, all these were negated.

    • @II-wu7mx
      @II-wu7mx 2 роки тому

      @@megaspoiler It’s a more reasonable request then, though I’m still team no go on the full suite for an aquatic themed campaign.
      The way you speak about the abilities leads me to think you believe they are only good when they are insanely strong. Baseline resistance to two damage types is good, +2 con from your template is good. The ability to become literal water in a game all about water is good. What you were offered were good defensive abilities. I understand the thought process because I do it too, the top tier is good, second tier is alright and everything else is kind of not worth considering. I’ll ask again, for what reason was it good or healthy for the campaign and not just for your dopamine?
      It was printed material and you wanted it, this created the expectation it should be allowed; this is not true. Much the same way it is explicitly not the job of the dm to trivialize the players efforts by arbitrarily putting insurmountable tasks in front of them, it’s explicitly not a players job to trivialize the campaign the dm is trying to run.

    I will admit i was once a DM much like this. in fact it was my first game. worst part is i committed the sin of having the pcs be the assistance to "The hero" and not the heroes themselves. i basically ignored the half the party's pc builds and only gave them what i wanted to give them. not what they could use. one player was a swashbuckler, a duelist. i kept giving him flintlock guns in my mind to turn him into blackbeard but he was trying to be Zorro. One pc when i was writing my "script" went from a swordsman to a beastlike berserker but i refused to change my bloodline quest for him the mcguffin sword, only to later learn that the tank of the party wanted the sword as he loved the "Chosen one's sword" thing but i refused to let anyone else use it as it was "Bound to a bloodline" and the berserk was the only one of the right player race to be a hidden member of that bloodline. lastly the healer was a pacifistic monk who was only on the quest to gain enlightenment. i more or less forgot this pc existed outside of a healbot. Almost gave up the game when i put the party in a "holy vault" to their saint of their god, made the goal to "Enlightment" a magic book that was bound by a puzzle. well only the berserker figured it out by being direct in guessing the answer and i though i was being clear with my hints, but turns out it was a "loony key to logical lock". Only one player had their pc be "Fulfilled" at the games end. When given the feedback at the end, i emotional turtled up when criticized and never gmed again for years. now i am currently running fallout game with the same players. thankfully propped by videos like these i took the time to see where i went wrong and laugh at how dumb i was back then. so far my players now tell me that I've improved and avoided the old pitfalls i used to make in my old game. that's why i am thankful for videos like these as they really helped in "Dos and don'ts" of Gming a game. anyway sorry for the bad grammar. just wanted to quickly confess my dm crimes before i got to bed at 2 am in the morning...

    I wish I could say I have triumphed over these DM's before, but when I was on a DND Discord server and playing the highest level character I have ever played, which is my level 18 gnome wizard Prinkseth Inquis, the narratives that the administrators continued to put out restricted my character's magical options. They felt that he was making the server too unbalanced with his high-level magic when no one else had brought over characters from the previous server of their own choice. He was constantly being forced to not have Arcane means of travel outside of the island on which the server was centered, and when there was a threat of invasion from the Winter Fey, he first had to ask permission of anyone before he could scan them for illusion magic. It got to the point where he could not even cast Detect Magic on himself to check because the administrators believed that others had to express consent before he could check them. It was a state of emergency, and I was not only appalled, but angry that they were limiting my options out of fear of having their railroad campaigns be derailed. That is why I left the server and I never intend to go back. I will just make a new variant of that character, one for each class, in every new campaign I play.

      As much as I love D&D, I'm thinking that a "Silent Hill" kind of campaign would be best run through either Call of Cthulhu or one of the World of Darkness games, of which Hunter: The Reckoning would probably be the best fit.
      And as far as researching the deepest fears and regrets possessed by players and/or their characters, another World of Darkness game already has _that_ device covered: Wraith: The Oblivion. The downside to trying to fit "Silent Hill" into a Wraith campaign is that the Player-Characters in Wraith are _ghosts_ (and therefore, they're already dead). But Wraith is _huge_ on psychological horror, so if you can make the Restless Dead work with the Silent Hill setting, then more power to you!

    I learned right quick that backstory wasn't what this DM was after. And he quickly discontinued the campaign. When he found how devastating a javelin rogue can be in a 3.5 campaign.

    Oh man, those types are a nightmare. I had one from a pathfinder campaign who wanted to play a level 30 incubus god or whatever pretending to be a lvl 1 half elf sorcerer. Shows me his sheet, hands me a separate lvl 30 sheet, and I notice in neither case does he have appraise, umd, spellcraft, or knowledge arcane. This is where I accepted the character and the plan formed. Early in the campaign, I let him find a hat of disguise. He rolled appraise, rolled average. Now, the deal was if he rolled something mental based he'd get an impression of something feeling off if his lvl 30 stats succeeded. When I said everything in him says this is a hat of disguise, he smiled and said he puts the hat on. Now, the moment he did, I told him to roll a willsave. He started panicking at that, said blah blah blah immunity. Then I said, " *physically* you're a lvl 1 half elf." He relents and rolls a 1. That, of course, is when i start laughing, and say, "as you wear the hat you begin to feel different. You remember your history, not with fondness, but with disgust. Your alignment is now NG. When he sees me erasing and writing, he demands I give him his other sheet, and when I do it not only has his alignment switched, but his domains as well. He is now a good boy incubus god who is celibate and a legitimate white knight. After that, he screams at me, (I think he was going for banshee?) Says I won't get away with defacing him. He then starts flailing at me. Only problem there is *my* black belt is in judo, rather than his which is just for cosplay, so I flip him over the table and put him in a sleeper hold till he's not a danger to himself and those around him anymore.

    I really enjoyed the great stories that used to first appear here. They were inspiring or wholesome and I had loved the paladin grandma. This was a channel I shared with others, but, lately, I'm not really sure where else to find that kind of goodness in D&D stories anymore. I feel as if this channel would love to tell tales about the good days again, except there are not many examples of those. Instead we have an exceedingly growing amount of horror stories. These stories, whether they are representing the gaming community or not, still, whenever D&D is mentioned, they will bring these tales to mind. Am I to believe there are really that far less pros and more cons on the variety of D&D games to speak of? :(

      I'm reluctant to railroad my players (since I take pride in my ability to improvise and work on the fly), but when I must, Schroedinger's Plot is my favorite device for clandestine railroading. The party leaves town by the North Gate? The refugee peasants who warn them of Lord Bigbad of Evilguy (and thus hook them into their next quest) are at the North Gate. The party leaves town by the East Gate? The refugees are at the East Gate. The party tries to sneak out of town through the sewers? I turn the refugee peasants into refugee _outlaws_ hiding from Lord Bigbad in the sewers. They buy a magic carpet and fly out of town? The refugees are now migrating avariels. They decide "screw travel" and decide to hang out at the local inn for a month? The refugees come to stay at the inn and meet them over meat and ale. The party decides to spend the month at the Mages Guild instead? Now the refugee peasants are a single wizard driven from his homeland by Lord Bigbad.
      If it works, it works!
