Fun fact: The expression "tie the knot" (meaning to get married) comes from a reference to nets of knotted string that supported mattresses prior to the invention of metal-sprung bed frames. Hence, in order to make a marriage bed, the couple needed to tie the ropes into knots.
Am I the only person that immediately thought of Anne Hathaway the actress…. I didn’t know there was another Anne Hathaway that had some relation to Shakespeare 😂
If it helps at all, her name was pronounced "hate-away". Shakespeare puns on it in Sonnet 145. Those lips that Love’s own hand did make Breath’d forth the sound that said “I hate,” To me that languish’d for her sake: But when she saw my woeful state, Straight in her heart did mercy come, Chiding that tongue that ever sweet Was used in giving gentle doom; And taught it thus anew to greet; “I hate” she alter’d with an end, That follow’d it as gentle day Doth follow night, who, like a fiend, From heaven to hell is flown away; “I hate” from hate away she threw, And sav’d my life, saying “not you.”
What a beautiful area. I can see why you wanted to walk with the weather seeming perfect and all the nice cottages and foliage eveywhere. It's like walking in a story book. Very magical.
I love these tours of England. I only had to chance to spent 14 days to see England, Scotland and a small bit of Wales. This gives me a chance to see what I missed or revisit what I did see. My condolences on the passing of the Queen. 😢❤
Very nice, I too love the original furniture, structures, etc. Your history is so much older than ours, it’s really fascinating, thanks for sharing! ❤️
Thank you for the tour! I went to the Anne Hathaway cottage 55 years ago when I was 20 years old. Now pushing 75 years old but I don't remember the interior! I remember the outside and garden and took pictures of it. Maybe it was closed the day we visited? So this was very interesting and fun to see where I had once walked in my youth!
Fun Fact!! The saying 'Night Night don't let the bed bugs bite' relates to the era when beds were made with straw and it had bugs/insects in the straw/hay. 😱
Nice tour, I was there back in 91', but I only have pictures of the outside of her home (which are quite lovely in September), just can't remember why we couldn't peek inside. So this was so much better! Thanks Joel and Lia, see you soon.
Thanks so much for this. I was in Stradford Upon Avon in thr 90's and was only able to see the outside of the cottage. Its great to see the inside and hear a bit of the history.
Lovely...!! What do you think of Stratford-Upon-Avon as a place for US residents planning to live abroad in future...? Affordable? Easy commutes? Home prices? Planning it for my retirement in 15 years...💚
keep on top of the immigration rules that have been changing. there is no more "retired person of means" visa. you need a lot more money to get into the UK now. i'm looking at 10 years until retiring.
@@collettelowry4227 Yep. I learned it years ago from a documentary on PBS, about the unproven theory that Willy didn’t actually write his plays. They covered his upbringing, education, and marriage to Hathaway. Of course, this was long before anyone ever heard of the actress.

Interesting!! I always assumed it had something to do with handfasting.
@@annaburch3200 It does in Celtic tradition.

Sleep tight is also a reference to the ropes of the bed staying tight.

Same! I’m like I thought she was American…. maybe she grew up in his old house at one point? I was super confused
It seems that actual actress Anne hattaways's husband does look like...William Shakespeare
I was thinking of Anne Hathaway the actress when I heard Anne Hathaway from Shakes era.

Yeah we loved the walk from the centre of town!
Houses remind me of my Thomas Kincaid pieces

My parents took me there when I was about 7 years old. It was a great learning experience.
Hard to get around in my head , 14 generation living in the same home. Great video. Peace!
Usually try to watch your videos within a day of coming out. Sorry, this one got by me-- enjoyed the tour!
That was so fun Joel and Lia.
Thank you for the tour. Avon looks so lovely.
We have a generic Stratford vlog coming in the next week or so!
Love this kind of video -- I'm a nerd at heart LOL!
Thanks!
This is so interesting. I want to watch more of these.
Fun Fact!! The saying 'Night Night don't let the bed bugs bite' relates to the era when beds were made with straw and it had bugs/insects in the straw/hay. 😱
Also, the "sleep tight" part of the rhyme refers to tying the support ropes taut to keep the bed off the floor and yet more bugs.
Thanks for the plagiarism…

I loved this video! What a charming village and the story behind their marriage was so interesting. Best part? Lia reveling in her newfound height! 😄
Hahah Lia was so pleased with herself hahah
You two should visit Salem Massachusettes some day, lots of history.
That was really awesome! 😊
Thank you!
I've only visited the little replica af Anne's house in Epcot at WDW so this was so fun to see 😊 I love it when you take us to see the UK 🇬🇧 💕
You're so welcome, thanks for watching us!
That place is so gorgeous. I would love to go there. I live in the United States so it's highly unlikely be able to. Btw my maiden name was Hathaway!

It’s an easy commute but not cheap! As a historic town it can be very expensive. But the surrounding area isn’t too bad!

LOL I thought of the modern day actress!
Hahaha!
"Joel's just choosing we he fancies". Well how damn fancy!
hahah!
I thought, oh my goodness! How on earth did they get an invitation to tour Anne Hathaway’s house. 🥴 Oops, wrong Anne Hathaway! 😂🤣
Haha imagine!!
Carrots!!!🤣🤣🤣
What a throw back!! 😂
👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
2:30 Maybe Wills married up!! In fact...I think the modern Wills married up as well.
So Anne Hathaway was the first "cougar"! She was 26 and Shakespeare was 18!!
I had no idea she was over five hundred years old. She looked quite young in Les Misérables.
😂😂
Oh. That Anne Hathaway. Lol
Am I the only American who was confused thinking of the actress only to learn towards the end that Anne Hathaway is the name of Shakespeare’s wife?! 😂
Shakespeare was a bit of a Rebel wasn't he? 80 and getting the local socialite pregnant 😲😂😂
Thanks guys!💕💕💕💕
I assumed it was the Hollywood Actress 😆
Carrots😊
Really? Anne Hathaway? From "The Princess Diaries"?
I was literally sooooo confused. Made it half way through the video thinking they were talking about the actress

Do they? That’s a good deterrent!

The fact that I thought this was about the current Anna Hathaway 🤦🏾♀️
Hahaha!
I thought you said Shakespeare was 80 when they had their first kid together 🤣🤣🤣
the day I was there a bus load of German tourists unloaded
I legit thought this was going to be about the actress… 🧐
Haha oops!
It is not Anne Hathaway's cottage. It's the Hathaway's family house. She never owned.
Am I the only one that thought this video was gonna be about the actress? LOL SHUT..UP!!
Hahaha 🤣
