They are quite a stately piece to add to a landscape. I say if you got the room for them go for it. I got mine smaller because they were cheaper and I can wait for them to grow.
Thank you, Lexis! Wonderful hedge!! I have always been interested in SkyPencil Holly and seeing this application was very helpful! Have a great day from northern Idaho (Zone 6B).
I planted a hedge of 22 of these about 4 years ago, they were the size of yours. Now they are 5-6ft tall. They were planted in GA red clay and not amended. Main difference with mine is they are on irrigation and planted every 3ft.
@@dirtanddish Yea the line I used has the drip every 18" so I have water at every plant and in between each one as a result. For you it would be at every plant since yours are 18" apart. Currently they get watered for about 2 hours every 2-3 weeks depending on the weather. I got it hooked up to a ranchio controller so it varies it based on estimated soil conditions. My soil here is pretty acidic at around 5.5ph so giving them holly tone on top of that likely kicked them into high gear. This year I actually did not fertilize them at all and they still put on growth all year. Bees like the flowers they get, although they are hard to see unless you are looking for them. Great plant, I think the original in Japan is like 40ft tall now.
Thank you for the info. I have researched drip irrigation just not ready to install it yet although after this last heat wave and drought the coulda woulda shoulda thoughts came up.
Just understand this will cause the wall to fail. The plants act as a lever, and wind loads will be transfered to the wall. It wont happen the first few years, but ~5 years in the wall will start leaning/failing.
These don’t have an invasive root system and the wall has a drainage system so if anything the roots will go towards the lawn for water if needed. And keeping them at a max height between 5-6 ft should be ok. Plus the wall has deadman posts throughout for reinforcement.

Thank you so much. They grow 6-12" a year and I'm ok with that. I'm not looking for something fast growing and I got them small because they were cheaper.
Just found your channel so I don’t know what zone you are in. Thought I’d mention that this plant can be broken in a very heavy wet snow. Or at least some branches. We love our pencil Hollie’s so each winter we tie a string near the top to keep it it from slitting. I have a friend who puts a nursery planting pot on top. I don’t tie them really tight. Just enough to keep the snow from splitting the tops. Just sharing this thought. Love the precision you used. These grow slowly but will be beautiful and avoid the mclandscaping as I call it. This is a not often used plant for hedging type of look.
Thank you for the tips. I will definitely try that as they get a little bigger. And I agree, not the most common for hedging but I was working with such a narrow space and I didn’t want just grass against the wall so figured let’s give it a shot. Thanks again for watching and the advice. Much appreciated.
I’m sure you can. There are a lot of slender columnar evergreens too. Green Tower Boxwood, Blue Arrow Juniper. All depends on the look you’re going for.
I bought one of those this past weekend and I’m in love with it. Seeing yours I want more!!!! They’re beautiful!

Can’t wait to see them grow
Me too. So much more planting coming.

Oooo that sounds fabulous and inspiring. I hope mine grow like yours and I hope to transition to drip irrigation too

Not sure on the affects it'll have on the wall but dang you did awesome! Perfect length and width they turned out fantastic.

Great work! I'm not sure if you know, but Sky Pencil Hollies grow very slowly..
