A lil summary for those still struggling with the indicators. Open interest measures the volume of new orders being opened in the market, so limit orders vs market orders. If it's increasing, more limit orders in the market so a price move is supported by orders and not stop losses or liquidations. It does not tell you whether the orders are longs or shorts though. CVD measures if there's more buying volume or selling volume in simple terms. If it goes up, more longs are being opened than shorts and if it goes down, vice versa. The basic strategy JC talks about is to look for divergences in price action and cvd at key levels of support and resistance. If there are big divergences, it may signify that big pockets (whales) with large limit orders are absorbing the lil guy's selling or buying pressure and a trend reversal may come once their orders are filled and there are no more ppl buying or selling their asset (depending on the direction of the price). Exhaustion is similar as in a price creates a higher high in an uptrend or a lower low in a downtrend but the cvd shows the opposite meaning buying pressure or selling pressure is exhausted and a reversal may happen also.

Good question - it’s because the order book only shows you active market orders. Passive limit orders don’t show. So really when we’re solving for X, we’re solving for the number of limit orders that are being filled.
Can a detected CVD divergence be used on larger time frames effectively. I'm looking at BTC since the beginning of 2023 and open interest is rising, CVD is dropping and the price is still much higher than it was at the beginning of the year? Can I deduce from this that the rise in price is all based on whales gobbling it up waiting for the Fish to change their minds?

Yes, but imo, it doesn’t usually help give a trade entry because it takes so long to play out with lots of volatility in between…but it can assist you in determining the end of a macro trend.
That makes sense, and its kind of what I was thinking. Again referencing the BTC chart with the signal flashing for so many months. It does mark the end of the big drop

but what if price for example goes up, cvd makes a lower high and a lower low, and oi goes down as well? is that now bullish, bearish or neutral? im confused because cvd shows bullish and bearish signals at once with making a lower high and lower low. or do you just count the lower high because price is making a higher low?

I find this to not work because if you look at othe bitcoin charts cvd on 1m or 5m, they all look different and cvd and open interest are not the same, compare bybit btc usd vs binance perp future usdt

Are there any patterns that might attract a whale to do this move? What are they looking for?
Maybe volume? If they wear out the dumb money in whatever direction it’s going in maybe a drop in volume is a good indicator for the whale or MM to drop a big order and reverse direction of the market. I figure then their order doesn’t have to compete with anymore new money coming in so it can make a bigger move and entice the dumb money to jump back in thus starting a new trading range.
But I don’t know. Just taking a guess. This video just sewed this whole trading thing from a 40ft view for me and now I understand the flow of the game (Thank you Jason!). Good question to follow up this video.
