Great video. Now I know exactly what to do to get those old postwar classics smoking as they did in the 1950s! Thanks for making this terrific tutorial.
Thanks for the tutorial. Very thorough. I put a new pellet type kit in a 2026 and it barely smoked at all. I used this video to convert it to liquid smoke and it now works beautifully. One point I'd add is that for my spur gear type of motor frame I had to take care when choosing a grounding point for the resistor lead so the other (positive) lead of the resistor wouldn't contact the smoke spout when the cap was installed. Thanks again for the video.
Great Tutorial! Well presented and you made it look simple! If only the oil smelled like smoke pellets... I’ve tried scented oils in other locomotives but in the end they just smell like oil... there’s something nostalgic about that good old pellet smell! Knowing it was the smell my dad experienced with the same 2055 as a kid... it is just special!
Thanks ! I've done this once before and it worked great but I just unpacked my 2037 Loco after 16 years of storage and I'm barely getting a wisp of smoke even with fresh fluid and at full power. I'm guessing the resistor has gone bad. Waiting on the new one to arrive and hopefully get her smoking again for the granddaughter ! Very good video, thanks again.
I remember the 726 we had when I was a kid. Too young to really know what I was doing but I did know how to put a smoke pellet in. When we ran out of smoke pellets, it seemed to me that an aspirin looked about right so I tried that. Bad idea. NOT a good smell.
If anyone does this, DO NOT EVER LET YOUR LOCOMOTIVE SIT IN NEUTRAL AT 18 VOLTS. This will result in a burned out resistor. You can also just replace the pac man liner, leave the original heater, and just use liquid smoke fluid.
hello I worked well on a 736 and it comes out quite a bit of smoke. I did exactly on a 671 and 2065 and the result is not as good as on the 736. To make the turbine work better, I removed the resistance lining and it improved a lot. I don't know whether to do the same with the 2065.
Hi Daniel. You can get the smoke kit here: www.ebay.com/itm/233364888278 Keep in mind that it's only for certain postwar Lionel locomotives that are mentioned in the description of the listing.
Unnecessary. Put a few drops of lionel smoke fluid in any postwar steamer with a smoke generator designed for smoke pellets and it will smoke beautifully with no need to change anything. No issue with voltage. These kits are a solution for which there is no problem.
WELL worth the time and the kit is very inexpensive. My 736 Berkshire just pumps out the smoke and looks amazing! Wonderful improvement! Thanks Tim!

That's what I do and it works great. Also you can still run with smoke pills if you want to go back.

Jayme González It’s worth a try, but the 2065 smoke units never worked quite as well as the units they put in the Berkshires and Turbines.
good video, mine is working great.
Well done tutorial. Thank you.
Where can I get one of these kits

Great step by step instructions, however not ample time to read each individual step.
Just click the pause button on the video whenever you need to.
What's wrong with talking?
