- As we made our way towards the small village of Haarlem, we saw an old railway bridge in the distance which caught our attention. Although it's not in use anymore, we were both intrigued and decided to go explore it. It turns out that the Apple Express used to go over this bridge back in the day, and we were transported back in time when we found it. The sight was simply beautiful, and we were glad we took the time to investigate. As we entered the village, we found the old Lutheran Church with an incredible history. I went inside, and I was blown away by the character and beauty of the building. The church was so charming, and I could not help but admire its architecture. I was thrilled to hear that there were plans to renovate it. As we continued driving through the streets and roads, we came across the old Haarlem Station. Although it is not functional anymore, we read up on some of the history of the Apple Express, which was very interesting. We learnt so much about the village and its history, and we were fascinated by it all. Overall, it was an amazing experience exploring the village of Haarlem in the Langkloof. The scenery was stunning, and the history was intriguing. I am so glad we had the opportunity to visit this charming little village and learn more about its fascinating past. As mentioned in your Avontuur post, I worked in the area as a plumber for the Railways. That water tank brings back memories. It used to have a long spout to fill the steam engine. The tank would leak when the flap valve wore out. I would strip Down to my underpants, dive into the tank, remove the flap valve, close the hole with another flap, repair the flap by covering it with a thick hydronic leather, dive down again and fit the now fixed flap valve. All this was done without wasting water as the next train was on its way to Avontuur and had to stay in schedule. The danger was getting your fingers caught under the flap when the gushing water slammed the new flap in place. I later converted this tank to a gantry system. The train was now filled by opening a valve thus eliminating the cumbersome Shute. This area was declared a coloured area in 1963. I was told that the apples grown here could not be distributed through the cooperation owned by the National government. Maybe someone can give more information on this topic. It sounds like quite an involved mission to replace that flap valve! 🚂😨 We always enjoy seeing those water tanks and saw quite a few on this trip. I love those small settlements rooted in missionary work, which just keep on going, no matter what, after more than 150 years with just hard work, as the horse drawn ploughing illustrated. The Lutheran church is beautiful. You passed a school bus somewhere, but I didn't see a school?
The steel roofed houses from the previous century always touch my heart. Even here are some smart gabled buildings.
This was a great trip in the lovely green apple country, with history thrown in. Thank you for taking me along again!

The railway bridge was fantastic and I was so happy to find it! 🚂🛤️ Our fascination with all things old railways really just increased during this trip with so much to see and discover. The school bus was parked in front of the High School. We didn't drive into the grounds, so you may have missed it. It's a rather big school for Haarlem, but we thought it would be because of the huge agricultural industry and all the outlying farms in the area. The church was incredible, we loved it! It could tell a few stories, I bet! It's a little battle-scarred from the 130+ years it's been standing in the elements, but the beauty in the present day is still undeniable. 😍💒 The horse-drawn plough was the cherry on top of this incredible village and it was our privilege to share it with you! 🚙🐎
What a beautiful area, and everything still remains simple and down to earth. No high tech equipment or even a tractor

Was lucky eniugh to have travelled on Apple Exopress in the early nineties.Pray we can get it up and running again .,
You were indeed very lucky to have been a passenger on the Apple Express! 🚂🍎 From what we've seen on this trip, I'm very sad to say those times have come and gone. 🤷🏼♂️
Some facts of the line. It is now closed with the last freight train running in the January 2011 from Humansdorp to PE. In the days when Apples were transported, the loading stations were Misgund and Louterwater with the last apple freight being railed in about 1997. In the later years of operation trains only ran to Assebaaibos station. ( Worth visiting ) with timber being loaded at this point to PE. Still loving your videos.

Allereerst wens ik iedereen fijne Paasdagen 🐣💒✝️. Haarlem als vernoeming naar de ‘town in Amsterdam’, laat de Dutch Haarlemmers het niet horen 😂, het is een geheel zelfstandige, prachtige stad met rijke eigen historie en de magnifieke middeleeuwse Sint Bavo kerk. Hopelijk kunnen jullie die stad ooit ook eens zien, al mag de Afrikaanse variant er zeker ook zijn. Prachtig die kerk met houten plafond en banken plus de vele mooie authentieke teksten in de destijds kerkelijke taal van het Nederlands. Het stadje oogt heel vredig, onder een schilderij-achtingen lucht en naar het lijkt iedereen een vrijstaand huisje. En de boer, hij ploegt letterlijk voort met zijn paard terwijl de modernere trein daar inmiddels - helaas- niet meer rijdt. Deze episode is een echte traktatie tijdens de Paasdagen! Kan het zijn Curtis dat jij ooit bij de padvinderij zat? Want je hebt een scherpe opmerkingsgave voor van alles in het landschap, van roofvogel tot een oude spoorlijn heel in de verte en nota bene verstopt tussen de bomen! Je weet (oude) Afrikaanse ‘sporen’ heel goed te vinden!
We wish you a blessed Easter Sunday too! 😊 We're always very hesitant to read from the Internet because the info isn't always accurate and we did explain about Haarlem not being a part of Amsterdam, but completely separate. I just decided not to include it because I thought most people would know it anyway. 🤷🏼♂️ The Lutheran Church was absolutely stunning and quite an emotional experience to walk through. 💒😍 I was never a Boy Scout, but have good eyes for spotting game and other interesting things which now come in quite handy on our travels! 🚙🛤️

Love the little Apple Express bridge. Truly beautiful countryside. What was that bird? An osprey? The dorpie is so picturesque, or picture-skew as my one ouma used to say! Hallo Anna Witter, i am catching up with old episodes and read your comment at nr 116. Wat leuk dat u Nederlands heeft gestudeerd en dat uw Nederlandse opa uit Deventer komt, dat is mijn hometown! Een prachtige oude Hanzestad die ik nog vaak bezoek. Uw opa heeft vast en zeker het standbeeld gekend van de Oranje Vrijstaat president Steyn want die ‘staat’ al sinds 1922 in het park bij het treinstation. Hopelijk bent u ook al eens in Deventer geweest of ooit nog eens in de toekomst? De naam Van Wageningen doet Britse tongen zeker kronkelen 😅, het Nederlands is niet gemakkelijk. Ik wens u fijne Paasdagen in het verre Down Under en uniek om elkaar een beetje te leren kennen via de avonturen van onze DustBugs vrienden ❤
@Anna Witter The bridge was a fantastic find and so unexpected. To think that the Apple Express rode on that very bridge I stood on, blew my mind! 🚂🤯 We're not major birders, but I don't think that was an osprey. I was leaning towards a falcon and specifically a female Lesser Kestrel, but I'm really not sure! 🤷🏼♂️🦅 Haarlem is like a little village trapped in time and we adored it! The church we don't have a lot of words for, other than it blew us away. One can so clearly see that it was a beautiful building, inside and out, back in the day and I can only hope that it does get restored soon. We loved it so much! 💒😍 I can tell you're an explorer at heart, just like the two of us. It's incredible finding new places and things as we travel! 🚙🤩 I'm so glad you're continuing to explore from our backseat!

I would love to visit Deventer but funds have not allowed it. I have tried to trace family on father's side but no success. It would be fantastic to actually go and see where Oupa was born. He came out as a boy with his family to South Africa after the war as there was no work. My dad was the only child. He is passed away but mom is still there in Cape Town. She is 92. (edit) I knew a chap in PE who was a keen railway modeller/engineer. He had a number of articles published in a British engineering periodical about narrow gauge rail facilities in the Langkloof. This included engineering locos etc from scratch. nternational exposure at it's best!!

thank you for showing the inside of the church my mum was born in harrlems my grand parent and family are buried in the church yard. my grandfather built a lot of the homes in Harlem back in the day around about i think the 1930s not sure on the date. the house he did that my mum was born in is still in the family and still in harrlem. i have lots of story about harrlem. it is way up in the mountains. this was my mum family home and still is in our souls ty
My mother and her family are from Haarlem. I used to enjoy going to my grandfather’s farm for holidays once or twice a year. I remember that apple orchard cause one morning at around 2am my fathers Datsun Laurel broke down right where you guys stopped and we stood there for hours waiting on the family to rescue us😂 going back with my family in December and I cannot wait!! Thanks for the great episode guys!
These last few episodes of the Lankloof were mind blowing. Such down to earth communities and plowing with a horse was also a first for me to see. The Lutheran church was spectacular to see. The cleanliness of these little towns are awesome. Proud people living there.
We just loved the horse and plough too! So authentic and they still get the job done without any modern farm implements! 🐎😍 The Lutheran Church with its thatched roof made a deep impact on us. Haarlem indeed is a true example of the "slow Life". The Lutheran Church is amazing. Love the brass lamps/ candle holders in the church.. The Dutch and German missionaries were indeed so brave to start these mission stations in the 1800.
It's an absolutely incredible church and it was a great privilege to be inside. Again, my thought was if only walls could talk. 😍💒 A place trapped in time for sure! Simplicity is fundamental to everyday existence there.🚙😊

Hi guys amazing place you two definitely have a nack for finding such unusual places. On the drive in the trees all covered by nets and what looks like a huge poly tunnel in the background you could be in Holland except its not flat the old iron bridge what a find definitely off the beaten track the the old bridge with water gushing through was that a eagle you spotted?lots of old houses the Lutheran thatched roof church amazing the inside pulpit pews the church wouldn't look out of place in a German village plus the little thatched cottages it's great to see the ladies cleaning and are getting work good idea loved the old train carriages and the history of the apple express was so interesting and a world record loved the old rondevelles and to top it all off horse pulling the plow debut takes you back in time wow what a great video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
We love unusual places and they seem to find us too! 🚙🤩 The old train bridge was a fantastic find and I was happy to have taken a walk where the Apple Express of days gone by once rode. 🚂🍏 I'm not great with bird names, but we consulted our bird book once back home and thought it was a female Lesser Kestrel, but we're really not sure! 🤷🏼♂️🦅 I'm so glad you also thought the church, in fact the entire village, was amazing! 💒🏡

My wife is from Haarlem and we got married there more then 26 years ago.I love Haarlem stil nice and tranquil to relax from city life.Were there last end of May 2021

My kind of road trip... off the beaten track. I was born in Oudtshoorn in 1962 and lived there till I was 17. I noted the surname Bowles on a plaque on the Lutheran church. The Bowles still live in Oudtshoorn

Fascinating ! What a lovely little town surrounded by apple farms. Love seeing the various churches you find on your travels, can just imagine the people in the pews in days gone by, also love the various trains & train tracks & stations you find, what a shame they are not still in use. The Apple Express sounds so interesting & what a great way to transport the apples to depots, would be cheaper than petrol maybe these days & more fun😉
I also always wonder what the churches must've looked like back in the day during a service! 💒 I often wish I could've been around in those times, it must have been so different to the times we find ourselves in today. We just love the old stations and there too sometimes close our eyes and wait for a locomotive to come through. It never happens though. 🤷♂️🚂 We appreciate you watching our videos. 🚙🤩
Laangkloof area Harlem is small community with farming they specialize with tru cape apple. It fall under George Municipality its one of my area I'm giving services until Uniondale. Thank alot for this owesome video

All the SAR railway tracks in SA are narrow gauge. In The 60's the Brits refused to travel on SA narrow gauge out of fear
I'm no expert on train lines, but we've definitely seen other tracks further apart. 🤷🏼♂️🛤️ Leeu-Gamka comes to mind. I believe they are 1067mm apart, while the ones in the Langkloof are 600mm apart.
This is to say thank you for another amazing video. Abandoned railways, stations and graveyards make your videos so interesting and watchable. Did you know there is an abandoned cemetery with a possible descendant of William Wallace in the Northern Cape. Wedberg cemetery - worth an explore one day if you go that way again. The last survivor of the HMS Birkenhead grave is there as well.

@@DustBugsTravel already looking forward to that visit to the Northern Cape. Wedberg was a huge town next to the Vaal river but due mining activities the town was abandoned and then destroyed by mining sadly. Only the cemetery survived but is in a sad state but with interesting people buried there. Opposite the Vaal river is a town called Windsorton that is slowly disappearing as well due to mining. Sydney-on-Vaal is another ghost town on the Vaal and so is Longlands. All close to each other. Love your channel! Love from Singapore

I think some of the covers wrapped over the individual rows, might be to stop some wasps laying eggs in the fruit, thus preventing worms in the fruit. Probably also all export fruits; keeping the quality up for a better wholesale price.
I also think that the covered apples can also be to have them get ripe at the same time.....just my thought
