  • Our visit to Avontuur was a truly unforgettable experience. Although we arrived late in the afternoon, we still managed to have a wonderful time exploring the special and small farming community. One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the steam locomotive, known as the Apple Express, which was still in remarkable condition. It was incredible to see such a significant part of the town's history still standing proud and tall. As we drove through the town, we couldn't help but admire the station buildings, which although abandoned, were still beautiful. Seeing the farm workers picking apples was a heartwarming sight, reminding us of the town's agricultural roots and the importance of hard work. We spent the night on Belle-vue Farm, which was a truly unique experience. We enjoyed delicious pizzas from Uniondale as we watched the sunset, and the peace and tranquillity of the farm were a welcome change from the hustle-and-bustle of city life. The next morning, I took a leisurely stroll around the farm and was delighted to learn that this was the tenth generation of the family living on the farm. As we hit the road once again, we couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia and longing for the simplicity and beauty of a place like Avontuur. It was a town that had stolen our hearts and left an indelible mark on our memories, and we would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic and unique South African experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #avontuur #appleexpress

Bowled over by everything in this video. As Sonia often says, “ I don’t have any words” 😁
I just honestly don’t know where to start - or how to do justice to what you’ve shared here. I honestly feel as though I was transported right there, and I’ve come away feeling renewed and so relaxed! Your own little unexpected interlude showing us the old treasures in the lounge and kitchen areas was a true delight, Sonia 💕
The drone footage was superb as always, Curtis. I would need to write an essay to comment on everything that touched my heart - so I shall stop myself right now with a simple, heartfelt thanks to both of you! 🙏🏻🥰

I'm glad you enjoyed Avontuur every bit as much as we did! The Langkloof was a long-anticipated trip for us and the start of it certainly exceeded any and all expectations we had! 🤩🚙 There was just no end to the beauty and interesting things we saw in and around Avontuur and our farmstay was brilliant too! All-in-all a fantastic visit to Avontuur and the little settlement has such a gorgeous name too! Thank you for joining us, as you always do. We love having you on board! 👌🏻

The weigh bridge is not used to check if a vehicle is over the limit. It is used to determine how much fruit or other stuff was delivered. The vehicle is put on the bridge fully loaded; the vehicle is unloaded and then the empty vehicle is weighed again. The difference between the two weights is the fruit delivered.

Hi guys another gem loved the old narrow gauge train. Great to see the apple pickers tractor in town brilliant workers all seem happy so interesting the old railway building weigh bridge and signs. Old house conversion to RC church a surprise to me .your accommodation first class love all the old stuff we also had a phone table. The history of the farm so interesting and the information about the pilgrims intriguing I look out of my front windows onto the old Pilgrims way up on a ridge .also kent is known as the garden of England but sadly many of the apple orchards have gone now replaced by vineyards. The drops footage really helps you see how small these towns are compared to the vast landscape and mountains another education of rural South Africa thanks for a great video cheerio till the next one

Rural South Africa is such fun to explore! 🚙🇿🇦 A mere six hours' drive from Cape Town, we had no idea what to expect upon our arrival in the Langkloof and that's exactly how we love it! The area is green, beautiful and a hive of farming activity, which was fantastic to see! 🚜🍎🍐 Our accommodation was very relaxing, we always love to stay over on a farm! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the drone footage. 🤩 It was interesting to read about the apple orchards in your area making way for vineyards. At least not massive buildings and other man-made structures. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at the next stop! 😁

Hi you two! What an adventure this was! Thank you for taking me along. There could not be a better start than the road through those spectacular cliffs!
That beautiful loco was the first surprise of many others. The 'old' buildings are so well kept and some are truly majestic with their century old gables and pillars.
Your trip around the orchards and the drone views plus music triggered an immediate heart felt attachment to this place where I've never been before. The lonely RC Church also says so much of the Avontuur people.
Belle-Vue indeed looks like a great place to find peace. Is it a B&B?
I find it hard to say any more about this visit without becoming too emotional, so I'll stop here.
Thank you again for the effort you put in to edit and publish these videos. You are doing our beautiful country a service.
I'm ready for the next trip!
    Keep safe!

Those rock formations on the way from Uniondale were just awesome and we never tire of marvelling at those giant cliffs which make us always feel so very insignificant and just so grateful to be in their presence. 😍⛰️ It gives the two of us the greatest pleasure to see all these incredible places and to be sharing them with folks like you who also enjoy and appreciate them. There is more than enough beuaty to go around for each one of us to have endless amounts of it to enjoy! 🚙🤩 Our introduction to apple-and-pear country was fantastic and everything was new and wondrous to us! 🍎🍐 The loco was fabulous to see and even more so because it's in such great shape! 🚂 Belle-vue Farm Accommodation consists of the large farmhouse you saw in our video with a family bedroom and en-suite bathroom, as well as three other bedrooms who share two bathrooms. The kitchen, dining room, living room and all the other facilities are shared by all the guests. It was a wonderful stay and our very first ever on an apple farm. We'd love to have you on board as we continued exploring the Langkloof! We'll rename the Kwiddie the Apple Express and we shall pick you up tomorrow! 🚙😁

Thank you for the info! 👌🏻 As with everything, there is so much conflicting info online. Our research showed that the Langkloof starts after Herold and that's also where we saw the Langkloof board for the first time. Either way, it's a beautiful area! 🍎🍐

Ja, Meiringspoort...Herrieklip...Herrie oppie ou tremspoor. Have you guys read Langenhoven? He is amazing! Avontuur...Kleine Avontuur...remember Fiela se Kind? So that what remains of the Apple Express. It became the Outeniqua choo-choo if I amnot mistaken. Which I probably am. Love the little loco! En Zondag is nog n naam uit die gebied! I feel so at home here, but this is where my ancestors come from. So sad to see a oncebusy station so abandoned. But it does inspire the artist and I might paint this one

You are close, but no cigar! Choo choo was between George and Knysna, Apple Express from Avontuur to Port Elizabeth. The mountains made a rail connection difficult between the two. I rode that Choo Choo (wasn't called that then, just the Knysna train) many a Friday afternoon in the late 60's from George to Knysna when at boarding school; gives my age away. It was a 3 hour trip and just magnificent.

@@mythos5809 thank you. Now I remember. Thanks for clarifying the different locos. It's been a while since I was last in the country but I have very fond memories. I am sure you have too. Yes, I too am in senior years 😂🤗

@Anna Witter Some scenes certainly deserve to be painted, I hope you do just that! 😁🎨 Sonia has read Langenhoven, she's the reader in the family! 📚 We've seen many abandoned stations, but somehow we weren't saddened by this one as much, most probably because the decline of the railway system didn't lead to the destruction of the little settlement and the fruit-growing industry. We felt and saw a lot of hope in this region, which was fantastic! 🍐🍎 I'm glad you enjoyed the little loco, we loved it too! 🚂😍 I hope it was a good experience for you to visit some of your ancestral grounds with us! 🚙

    Hi guys
Brilliant to see the old girl plinthed and in such good shape in avontuur. She is an NG class locomotive, not to be confused with the 25 NC (non condensing) mainline locomotive.
I have very fond and somewhat scary memories of walking across the van stadens River Bridge with my dad and brother as small children - getting halfway across and realising we had to run for it as one of the locomotives was coming!!
    Thanks again from the UK
    Kind regards
    Tim

We've learnt from our viewers that the NC25 is the bigger one, so knew that this one was the smaller one and it was absolutely fantastic to see it in such incredible shape! Those were indeed the days, you're fortunate to have such treasured memories! We appreciate you visiting Avontuur with us, it's a special place!

Hi DustBugs, I worked for the then Railways and used to do plumbing repairs in the region. Avontuur is the end of the narrow gauge line. The line starts in Port Elizabeth where apples were transported to the harbour and stored in the pre-cooling facility ready for export overseas. NB: They should make a special "DustBugs" addition of the car you drive to honour you guys and the car.
