My family is so different. Mom is 89 and still wears a full face everyday, still tries new things. I just bought her a cream blush palette from Pixi that she loved, & she went gaga over the Hourglass Bronzer for Christmas. She was 40s-movie star style gorgeous when I was a kid, my oldest sister strongly resembled 1970s Cher, hair & all, and my other 2 sisters and most of my female cousins all wore makeup too, my nieces went on to do the same. I learned from watching rather than being taught, but the glamour was all around.
The glasses and the sweaters are giving us very much casual Gucci vibes, I feel that's where the high fashion feel is coming from and I'm totally here for it.
Although I try to cherish what I have and use them up, when I run out of products, I try to take stock of whether the product is still aligned with my preference or whether it's a chance to let my taste evolve and find something new. It helps me cope when my favorites (be it makeup, fragrances, tea, anything) get discontinued. Backups prevent me from exploring my taste further.
I do the same with some products too. I often find myself using something and think how maybe i could explore different options for that category of product and then i realise that this thing is actually working great for me, why would i want to find something else in its place that might not work as well? So there are categories where I stock up on backups. Those are moisturiser and mascara, mainy. If I find a chance to get those at a good price or shared shipping with a friend, I'm like bring it on!
@@RaniaMich that makes a lot of sense. Yeah, I do get the giant size of things moisturizer, face wash, and shower gel etc. Mascara makes sense there too.
I love hearing people’s stories about the first times they wore makeup, or how they got introduced to makeup. It’s so exciting to hear what people thought and felt about it. My first real makeup experience was in 7th grade when I would stop at my friends house before the bus stop, and one day they were all matching blue eyeliner and mascara. They applied some hard candy metallic blue eyeliner on my eyelids, smoked out to be a lewk. I remember feeling so pretty! The items I repurchase the most have been Nars foundations. They were my first perfect color match and one of the few brands that made shades for olive skin. I also have purchased probably over 50 of the cover girl clump crusher mascaras. Some newer favorites that I’ve repurchased more than 5 times included Dior backstage foundation, too faced born this way concealer, benefit gimmie brow, and I also love the Milani matte lipstick in the shade 69 as my most natural lippie! I also have sentimental makeup that I might not own anymore but I have memories attached to. I wore the Stila glitter and glow in the true gold shade to my prom. I also wore the KVD liquid lipstick in the shade nosferatu and that makes me smile when I think about it.
The first time ever wore makeup I was 9 and in a school play. We all wore black liner and mascara as well as bright red lipstick. I know our director have us a shade number from wet n wild to buy. I kinda wish I could remember the number because a part of me wants a tube of it.
The first time I wore makeup I was probably 12/13. Friends of my mom had just gotten an Avon order and let me try on some lipstick. They all complimented my sister but not me. I still wanted a purple lipstick of my own lol. I didn’t really get hooked on makeup until I was around 17 and bought a gold eyeshadow and black eyeliner. I had been jonesing for that look and my love of Pat mcgrath labs continues my love of gold eyeshadow.
omg I was OBSESSED with KVD Lolita liquid lip until I got tired of the dry af lips. If there was a lolita stain or sheer gloss, tho, I'd be *real* tempted
I truly love the vibe of this kind of video: everything is precious and beautiful, but never essential and irreplaceable. I'll be thinking about my own things that I used forever!
I think the point you made at the end about backups extends to luxury products. Sometimes I try to justify buying very expensive color cosmetics by thinking that I'll use it for years. But realistically, how many products of that sort do I actually ever pan before getting tired of them? Almost none.
Also, as a Quaker (I converted as an adult) I don’t think people can fully appreciate what it must have been like for you to be a lover of beauty in a Quaker family. Quakers are sooo opposed to glam that it’s it’s own aesthetic. I’m thinking of this because you mentioned your mom not wearing makeup. I feel like this could be a whole video, tbh.
My short list does not exist... I went through every beauty-related thing I could think of and none of it has been with me for over 2 years. Even items I see as my current favorites or holy grail items could be replaced tomorrow with no sentimentality whatsoever. I thought I would at least have a few, but thanks for teaching me that I don’t!
Would love to see a video similar to this one like "things I THOUGHT I would use forever but replaced" kinda like a dethroned holy grails (except obviously we know there's no such thing as a holy grail). Your comments about changing your luxury skincare routine during your no buy year got me thinking about it.
I actually stop buying backups because I realized that I like using something else. By the time that I am using something up, I can't wait to open the next one. Which is also why I don't mind buying limited edition makeup products.
Whenever I hear you wax about colors/textures, I feel so thankful because we have the same coloring and the same skin and your insights are so helpful to me!
I like hearing and seeing her talk about it because my niece is fair and red haired and it helps me understand how to help my niece in the coming years.
My Nana used to do that for me in the 80s. Give me her old glass frames. Because I desperately wanted glasses. And they were not dissimilar.I was one chic briefcase carrying sixth grader.
I went cruelty free in 2015 but things I have been using for years... Kosas lipsticks, Kosas blushes, Glossier concealer, mascara and vitamin C serum. But now most things I use are now staples. I've been burned too many times trying new things that don't live up to my staples. I rarely try new skincare or basic makeup items
I got a pair or rimless glasses n it really makes a difference. You still see them but they open up ur face so much more. Good for showing off makeup. 👍 Although frames do hide small mistakes. 🤔
My “forever” product list is very short as well. - Burt’s Bees lemon butter cuticle cream - I tried to switch out for other cuticle products after they were purchased by Clorox but nothing has compared. - Wet n Wild cushion highlight, which I thought was discontinued but is still mysteriously available on the Walgreens website. It’s been a 5-year love affair and though I enjoy a couple of different highlights now that one is my old faithful. - Physician’s formula butter blush in the shade plum rose - everyone complained about the lack of pigmentation when it was released in 2017, but since I’m as pale as the driven snow it works out really nicely for me. I’ve purchased two so far. The item I’ve been using for almost two decades is some kind of gel in my brows - when I was 14 or so I got a Bobbi Brown book from the library and she recommended using clear mascara as brow gel. So I started doing that. I learned a lot from that book, actually - like the concept that foundation can be used strategically instead of as a mask all over the face, that the makeup industry has been historically exclusionary of black and brown people and this is a problem, and that a naturally strong brow should be respected and not tweezed into oblivion to follow a trend. She’s a real one, that Bobbi Brown.
This video made me think immediately On one blush i had forever. It was a gift from my great grandmother who isn't alive anymore. I don't want to rebuy it because it isn't cruelty free and i know it wont have the same essence of that gift. I've been low key stressing about finding a dupe for it, but this video makes me feel like its going to be okey. I can live my life with my other blushes Thank you for coming to my ted talk😂 Great video Hannah ❤️
I've been loyal to a small number of products where other versions have just never measured up. One I've used for about 7 years is the Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid, and it lasts me so long and is the rock in my skincare routine. The makeup products I can see myself staying true to are the Nars matte lip pencils (so thin and comfortable on the lips and last foreeeeever) and the catrice 24h liquid concealer. Idk what magic it uses but my skin looks so natural using that concealer! I have used both for around 5 years now and so many similar products have been disappointing! Sometimes experimentation is so much more expensive that it's just worth it to stick to a tried and true favorite
99% of the time I’m thinking “omg are you me?” when I watch your videos! I would only repurchase the same item if trying others in that category has consistently let me down. Because I consider life as a one day ticket to an amusement park, and I’d like to get on every possible ride before I have to leave
My two big things are Urban Decay eyeliner pencils (though I vary the colors) and Hempz lotion (though I vary the scents). I’ve been faithful to those two items “forever”.... and when I try any other versions I always miss my favorites.
I bought the green color corrector from your recommendation, and it is so serum-y that it mixes with face primer so well to make a light green color-correcting primer. I've also mixed it with my daily sunscreens before too.
This comes on the heels of a move where my living space is getting a bit bigger but my bathroom much smaller & shared. Just the inspiration needed for a declutter before packing!
i too grew up not being instructed in makeup, none of the women in my family really wore it, i was not forbidden but i was not instructed either. I remember using the yellowest color corrector on my highschool eye circles...
1. changemonger was a tasty word 2. to answer your question, I can only think of one product I have been using forever, and its various shades of the viva la diva bullet lipsticks. Its not that theyre particularly amazing, theyre really just fine, I just used to have a weird obsession with them for no reason. One of my earliest makeup products was one of their red lipsticks. So my lipstick collection has always been mostly them, and still is. Though the last couple years I have grown up from that obsession and when these are gone I plan to get something better. As for all other products, I think Im similar to you in that I want to feel like I am always evolving, and get bored of the old and curious of the new. By the time a product is done I usually feel like the start of a new era is overdue. But for most categories I never even found a holy grail to begin with, so there was never reason to repurchase. It also takes me a long time to use up things and I dont buy many at a time, so my process of trial and error until I find a product I really like usually takes many years. For that reason I have not yet found many products worth using forever, but it is possible when I find more of them there will be some that stick around longer.
I have a weird experience liking some product, finishing it, rebuying, and regretting this because suddenly I don't like it that much or it doesn't work as good anymore. Along with other factors, this made me buy backups on a very rare occasion and only for short-lived things like dry shampoo. p.s. you look like a teenage dream girl)
i used to have a tiny makeup collection before youtube. though i was always kind of curious about new things, i liked what i liked and stuck to it. over the years i have tried lots (for me) of things, but having too many at one time makes me feel kind of anxious. i'm a minimalist at heart and absolutely hate having to make decisions. so, too many products = anxiety. the idea of keeping it simple with what i *know* i like is reinforced every time i get a new product and don't like it as much as a product i've used forever. the products i've used the longest, consistently, is everyday minerals foundation (my first youtube-made-me-buy-it), clinique's black honey lipstick, and mac's paintpot in painterly as an eyeshadow base. also, the worst situation is when a beloved product gets discontinued. i have gone insane trying to find replacements, resulting in the acquisition of too many disappointing dupes that jus remind me how good that discontinued product was.
I've been bringing the no buy year videos because I find the pace of them and the subject matter itself to be very soothing. Whatever happened to Nars highlighter in Rivage tho?!
Generally, I agree with you about backups, with one exception: lipsticks of a favorite and unique color. I have been truly sad and frustrated when a favorite color has been discontinued. As a redhead - and now a redhead whose hair has gone pale - color has always been a challenge. My best color is a brownish/reddish/goldish color that is not too strong. My holy grail was Estée Lauder spiced cider. Now I’m wearing their naked ambition, which, while good, is not the same. With millions of lipsticks out there, you’d think it wouldn’t be so difficult to find replacements, but it is. I’m enjoying your channel. 😊🥂
The algenist green corrector drops are my go-to for adjusting base makeup for my light olive skin…. your green product choices are def what I’ll try if it ever gets discontinued!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!
Enjoyed this! The only things that I buy backups of are my key skincare products that I use up rapidly. I have also largely been using the same skincare for over 2 years now. I have a deep desire to purchase myself treats! I have to hold back when it comes to skincare because I know what my skin likes and I don't see any reason to mix it up for no reason.
I was similar to you in that my mom didn’t wear (much) makeup growing up. My mother used Mac lip crayon and used lancome brow pencil and that was it, so I didn’t have anyone to go through to learn about makeup. My first interest in makeup started from watching James Charles in 2018. Of course, watching him skewed my view of makeup because he wore a full face of 10-20 products every video. Even though I consumed a lot of makeup UA-cam, I didnt wear any because I was overwhelmed with the “‘need” to choose 10-20 products for your whole face. I’m starting to actually wear makeup now thanks to having more context, awareness, and money. Watching your channel has been so informational and entertaining as well! My first makeup products were Hanskin’s bb cream that I got as a gift and Heroine Make’s eyeshadow pallette.
Even as a non UA-camr I almost never rebuy the same products. The closest I get is sticking to the same brand but trying a new formula, color, or scent. When I have bought backups in the past I get sad when I use them because I want a change.
For My spot concealer, I use Dermacol. It comes in a tube. For convenience, I put it in a Z Palette travel jar which I use in conjunction with a tiny concealer brush. I love it. It is very full coverage but sheers our beautifully. I have two little areas on my cheek and chin that have a tiny broken blood vessel (super annoying) and it covers them completely. I apply the coverage in the morning and it is still covered after a long day at work. I find that Dermacol is sweatproof and mask friendly. The tube takes forever to use up and it comes in tons of colors and undertones. (If you do purchase, I would suggest buying from their website as there are TONS of dupes out there that are complete garbage. ) Edit: I just realized that my post above may appear that I missed the deep discussion of our consumer habits. I must confess, I do buy backups. And even backups of those backups. I plan on buying some (many) brow wiz on the Apr 3rd Ulta sale. I CANT STOP MYSELF. What if I ran out of my medium brown or taupe ?.? Aaack. I have zero will power
@@natnguyen4052 mhm. I ordered from Camera Ready Cosmetics. They have some well known brand and offer samples. I got one of the rectangle 5 pan Graftobian palettes and a couple Cinema secrets foundation and corrector samples. Half a pea size amount is enough for a full face. Also, if you want a great setting spray for masks, look at the Blue SELR spray, the Cinema Secrets Mattifying one, or the Ben Nye one
I’m only 23 but there are some things I’ve been using for upwards of 10 years.. haha!! The fit me and age rewind line from maybelline; Mac paint pots and urban decay priming potion; Essence lash princess; bare minerals original foundation powder; and a bunch of skincare! Time revolution essence, etc. it’s super interesting because I really only deviate from product to product within color cosmetics.
Love this. FWIW, every year since I turned 40, my HGs changed due to life/skin/etc. changes. Plus, my favorites get discontinued so often... but here's my short list: WnW eyeshadow single in Creme Brulee, which was originally a stand-in for a Maybelline shade that got pulled; Doctor Organic Rose Otto Day & Night creams, I use them most winters and whenever my skin gets irritated, I run back to this face cream formula knowing it will hydrate without hurting; Bareminerals Rescue Gel cream in Vanilla & Opal, Fresh Soy Face Cleanser. These are things I re-purchase regularly, but all of them "share a shelf" with other items in the same category except Creme Brulee, because I'm a change-monger as well!
I brought the neo highlighter because of how much you used to talk about it in your no buy year and I absolutely adore it!!! Also your look today is everything
I’ve only been wearing makeup since 2015 but nothing I bought then (mostly a handful of garbage NYX products) is still something I consider a favourite. Curious to see what changes and trends I see in my collection in the upcoming years!
"You know what coco channel said, 'before you leave the house, look in the mirror and see if you look cool. If you don't look cool, put on your fake glasses'." Literal LOL.
I can truly only think of four products that I've been using for years now. The list could have been longer, had stuff not been discontinued along the line, but I, too, am a creature of exploration. I like to try new products, and my tastes have changed from when I started wearing makeup in middle school (that black eyeshadow phase.... I pretty much never use it now, how funny to think it was a daily "necessity" back then) and now that I've reached thirty. Here's my list for anyone curious, however, from oldest to more recent beginnings: •Revlon Colorstay foundation - I've switched from the oily formula to the matte, and when they introduced the pump I praised the lord, but the color buff 150 has just been consistently the best match I've found across the board of drugstore and higher end ranges) •Rimmel Stay Matte powder - in high school I PACKED this on--I was very oily and wanted my makeup to last from 6am to 7:30pm including dance practice. Now I put a touch on my forehead, nose, and my cheeks right where they meet my nose just to take the shine down a little. Getting into actual skincare (and, ya know, leaving adolescence) really took away the need to pack on the powder. •Son&Park Beauty Water - I use it after double cleansing and I've tried to do without, but my skin likes it. It really doesn't do anything special, but I have such finicky sensitive acne prone dehydrated skin that it seems to help. •Benton Aloe BHA toner - if I had to call any of these my "holy grail" it would be this, because my skin does NOT like being without it. It's just too good. I think I've been using it since 2015, sometime just after adding the beauty water to my routine WOW I just rambled, my apologies lol
I really like your style in this video! I didn’t expect a superdry top and fake glasses but I love it! Also, I’m a colourful makeup girl but your eyeshadow is inspiring me to do a neutral brown eye look today 😎
For me, the things that fit into this category are pretty much all single shadows. I don't feel like getting up so I'm just gonna go off memory here, and I'm gonna say at around 3-4 years ago is when I really started getting into makeup, but I still didn't have much for myself, and my collection was mostly hand-me-downs from my sister. -Come & Get It - Colourpop (it's a perfect pink/gold shimmer but tbh not metallic enough and I've been lowkey looking to replace it w/ something) -Poodle - Colourpop (Medium pink?) -Bratty - Colourpop (Bright Orange) -One or two shades from the Urban Decay Vice 4 palette that I depotted and turned into a magnetic palette That is all. Everything else has been dethroned.
I honestly don’t have many go-to’s either because I do like to try new things (I am a big panner though and will force myself to use stuff up). I think the ones I keep coming back to though are Urban Decay’ all nighter, tarte shape tape (mixed in with another concealer), NYX lip liners, essence eyeliners and mascaras, and Arcona solution, cranberry gommage, and night breeze for skincare.
My forever list are nars radiant creamy concealer / hoola bronzer / Maybelline colossal waterproof mascara / maybelline master precise eyeliner / and I've been using my Naked 2 and my Mac lipliner in spice for 8 years and still loving them. Also I'm not wearing foundation at the moment but if I would Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk is the one for me. I feel like I could go on. Apparently I'm a creature of habit when it comes to buying make up. I don't buy back ups I just rebuy them when they're out of stock. I loved this idea! And I'm glad you did it organically and didn't force yourself to come up with products.
I think that backups can be dangerous! Our tastes AND the market are constantly in flux, so it isn't totally rational to buy backups (unless, of course, you're more casually into beauty, it's a great deal, and you haven't changed for the last ten years, although you may still change after 11). Holy grails are kind of our crown jewels, right? They're not going to be there forever, but they're the best of what we know right now. Conflating that with being a forever favorite can lead to unnecessary spending because you could easily predict your tastes incorrectly if you're not completely understanding/being honest about your relationship with a product. Some things I've used forever: Maybelline Dewy and Smooth Foundation (the only one I'd ever used until this year) Maybelline Loose Powder, though I'm almost through and I purchased the Wowder instead. L'oréal Lash Paradise, though I feel it will be unseated FAB Ultra Repair Cream Glossier Gen G in Leo! I'm on my 3rd tube, I fully panned it twice. I'm tiring of the dryness of the formula though, and I think I may prefer balms now 🙊 Elf Clear Lip Lacquer (like 10 tubes in) Buxom Hot Toddy Gloss (I'm panning my 5th tube right now, but actually no longer love the formula or shade. Never thought that day would come). Even amongst my old standards, there's so much change happening!
I love the glasses - they are delightfully quirky. I've never been married to a specific product. I spent a great deal of time and energy and money searching for the perfect...whatever until one day I just said ENOUGH! I know what I like and there are many things that will do just fine. It's all pretty much the same - just find the next one that works and use it. Boy I wish I'd learned that sooner and saved a bunch of time and money, but hey - my nieces think I'm the coolest since they inherited all my cast offs!
like so many people who were raised by zoella in the early 2010s, I still buy collection lasting perfection concealer and rimmel stay matte powder. I'm also relatively faithful to garnier ultimate blends almond crush hair conditioner. nothing other than those three.
Very interesting video! The holy grail products I've found are usually discontinued (anyone else long for MAC's original Prep+Prime SPF 50 with zinc oxide--it was magnificent & an Olay acne/anti-wrinkle moisturizer that made my skin so smooth!). The only products I can think of that I have continually repurchased over the years are Differin face gel (for acne) and, in between purchases of disappointing mascaras, Dior's Diorshow mascara.
the oily skin version of the Revolution spf50 for *oily* skin is veryyyyyy similar to the OG mac SPF!! It's not the same texture at all, its like an SPF and primer all in one but even on my very textured, extremely combo skin it makes my skin look like doll skin. AND It actually protects from the sun!
@@Scr3amerrr Thank you so much for the recommendation! I have been looking for a dupe for the last 10 years! I would have used the MAC prep+prime SPF 50 until the day I die if they had continued to make it!
so you mentioned how the small bobby pins will become brutalized by your hair, which I definitely get. I have extremely thick hair and danced ballet for many years, and I SWEAR by "Meta Grip Premium Bob Pins." I get them from Sally Beauty and they're the only bobby pins that didn't lose their hold after a couple uses. I evangelized half the girls in my studio to start using them, and the other half were ones with thin hair that didn't need them lol.
I never realized the Kevin Aucoin palette was a blend of highlighter's and I thought it was a bronzer because of you and that's how you used it in tutorials. I wanted it but I didn't want to spend the money. Well, one day in TJ Maxx there was the palette in it's original sealed cellophaned box for $19.99 and I grabbed it soooo fast and absolutely love it! I also have gotten the Laura Mercier baked highlighter in 01($9.99) and this week I found the Estee Lauder bronzed powder compact ($19.99), both sealed in cellophane. Plus, a bonus Nars mini Wanted palette for $9.99 which is beautiful. So ladies always check out the beauty aisles. My mom like yours never wore makeup and didn't allow me to till I was 16. I worked at Bloomingdale's in Manhattan while going to school and I would watch the makeup people do applications on customer's. I remember being enthralled by bit all. I made friends with those guys and gals and they would give me makeup they couldn't sell because the pencil or lipstick tips were crushed or they had left over gift with purchase gifts. I must have had at least 15 Clinique lipsticks in the color" Tenderheart" because that was in every gift with purchase for EONS! I now hate that color.
The stance on backups is interesting. I used to do that too, and find myself with way too many products to use before they expire because I bought too much, or something else new before I used the backup too. Now I only ever buy backups when I am completely out of the original, and know for sure I want to replace it.
I've got a short list too. I've used the nars soft matte concealer for about 3 years now and before that I used a boots own brand concealer for about 8 years I'd say lol I've used and loved my too faced semi sweet chocolate bar palette since 2012 now, but I do use it less now I have more eyeshadow. I also do have a backup palette as they discontinued it so I didnt want to run out of it and then not be able to rebuy it because after all these years I Still haven't found replacement eyeshadow dupes for 3 of my favourite shadows. Which is mental considering how much eyeshadow I've tried. They are unique 😚 I used the bourjouis healthy mix foundation for like ten years lol but don't wear foundation now really I've used the rimmel brow powder for years now and the smashbox primeriser. Oh and the physcians formula butter bronzer is like 5 years old and still going strong 👌 Ok I have a fair few items lol But you're right holy grails get replaced a lot and backups is not a good idea for me except for that eyeshadow palette
I love that Sunday Riley lactic acid... Love it. I try to get that and the retinol from them with Sephora points... Been lucky this year. Have some backups of the trial sizes but could never buy a backup of something that will last longer than a month or two.
I definitely feel like "trying new things" is kind of part of one's personality. There are people who like it and people who don't. I could actually say that my "holy grail" products I will use forever (assuming they don't get discontinued), because I hate trying new skincare. I find it an exhausting gamble.(Though I don't buy backups for budget reasons.) I definitely prefer trying a few things until I find something I love, that works, and then I stop looking. My sister, on the other hand, is the opposite: she absolutely loves trying new things, like you, even if the new thing ends up being not as good (and it's always baffled me, ha). I always love your analysis and takeaways about consumer behavior!
I think if there's a particular product you have a hard time finding one that works well for you, if you find one that does what you want, then it can become the one that lasts forever and outweighs the "I want to try more" impulse. Like almost all concealers crease on me, and for the longest time I was just on the hunt for the one that would crease "the least", but now I've found one that doesn't crease at all and I'd consider it my "Holy Grail" concealer. Even though I have the impulse to try different concealers it's just like "99% chance this creases" so I just don't
This kind of content is the reason why r/MakeupRehab loves HLP 🥺 that insight about holy grail products makes so much sense, it almost feels ridiculous to me that I've never thought about them that way. My Bareminerals BarePro concealer is a recent HG of mine (even though I've only used it once LMAO I've never had a base product match my coloring and preferences so well), but I'll try to stop myself from thinking of it as a forever staple, and just enjoy it in the moment
Sephora's sale is coming mid April, so maybe that can be when you get your green color corrector. It's not like you'd be shopping the sale just for the sake of getting something. There's a product you already plan on purchasing and by waiting for the sale you'll save a few dollars
Hannah. Have you tried using hairpins? I feel like they hold my hair securely (there is a knack to them, admittedly) without the potentially damaging use of the tight grip of Bobby (or roller) pins.
🤔 this made me think of the stuff I used to use. The things I loved and would still have in my collection if I could were all discontinued. That is what sent me to UA-cam and started me on the beauty space train. So now I have way more than I ever had because I’m exposed to more. But before I used the same makeup from the same places forever. I have also turned 35, had babies and my skin is crazy different so some things would have had to change. But two things I know wouldn’t have if they were still the same is an almay mascara (discontined) and almay smart shade (changed the formula and discontinued). Though I pretty much always buy the L’Oréal brow stylist. And now I do cover girl mascara mainly. The green tube and pink tubes are my favourite and the only things I have backups of. I also live somewhere remote so those I’m comfortable to “stock up on”. Though it’s been hard to find for myself because of supply and demand chain since covid where I live.
My holy grails are the UDPP in Greed (the nude coloured one), Sugarpill eyeshadows (I've been rebuying Love+, Tako & Bulletproof for the last 10 years specifically, and the Essence eyeliners
I feel like for drugstore, I'm more willing to try something new but for high end make up I have my forever make up products that I rebuy everytime. They're too expensive to take the risk to try something new that might not work as well.
I don't think I've ever had a holy-grail beauty product - I've always felt that there were so many untried products, and most of my products, no matter how great, have something about them that isn't perfect. This doesn't mean I'm forever chasing perfect - rather I'm happy with good, favorite-for-now products.
I've been wearing MAC, Chanel, and Nars lipsticks for forever. But when Nars re-released their initial lipstick line, I realized I had used (and panned) all but one shade. I panned Funny Face at least twice (I think three times). My first on my own, saved up my dog show money, huge makeup purchase, was a matte as MATTE red lipstick. But what that tells me is that my taste in colors and formulas ebbs and flows. And I have gone through years where I've worn only Chanel (that firm, ugh), or only bare minerals, or almost no makeup, or whatever. And until 2020 I rarely liked nude lipstick and I'm still not convinced I like more than a couple. I can identify 3-5 brands and product styles I've used forever (meaning since the 90s or early 00s). And my skincare massively changed in 2017 and again in 2019. But I like to try things out of curiosity. And even if they don't replace my reigning queen, it means it takes longer to use my reigning queen. I try to wait until I am less than 1/5th left on a product before I buy a replacement. Sometimes, I just let it run out. One of the great takeaways of your no buy year is the song you sang for no backups for the sephora sale.Because sometimes I change one product because it's not working, but because that product is more expensive, I change others to compensate within my budget. Or I do things like buy a boatload of queer-owned beauty brands because I want to talk about them, so then i am using those instead for a bit. I do not own a single product that is more than a year an a half old because I pan that aggressively. I think this is timely and well considered. And it helps me be careful with sales to buy things I am ready to replace, versus things I believe I will use again in future. If 2020 is any example, there will always be sales, usually better than Sephora, across all retailers.
Oh my dear HLP, you win for my favorite UA-camr ever! Unrelated to the video, but positively earth-shattering nonetheless... I finally tried the Erin's Faces sunscreen for the first time today and it is the most elegant mineral sunscreen to exist on planet Earth! I'm 41 with very oily skin, so it hard to find something that works for me and oh lord have I tried! Erin knows her faces, I gotta say! A+++ Your rec rocked my socks off!
Not me, I find the thing that works and stick by it...until the discontinue it 😒 My skin is so sensitive it tolerates very few changes. Even so, as we age the things we use change.
Speaking of consumer habits, I read this mind blowing quote about consumerism. "We must shift America from a needs, to a desires culture," wrote Paul Mazur of Lehman Brothers. "People must be trained to desire, to want new things even before the old had been entirely consumed. We must shape a new mentality in America. Man's desires must overshadow his needs." This is when the Lehman brothers helped create consumer culture that didn't exist before.
My "forever" products atm are Cover Girl Super Sizer mascara (waterproof, volume plus length and soooo underrated), Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer (I try so many bronzers and always come back to this one), and Maybelline Matte Ink liquid lipstick
I’m the same way with always wanting to try a new product. Now I limit myself to purchasing just one backup of my favorite brow pencil when it’s 50% off. My consistent products are the ABH Brow Wiz and Tarte Lights Camera Lashes mascara. But some of my powder cheek products have lasted me so long they could be considered old standards.
HLP, have you considered that you have a mild olive undertone? Hearing you talk about using very pale yellow base products as well as loving green color corrector, plus how much you love blush & lip colors in muted pinkish neutrals with a brownish/almost gray undertone aka those “grungy” colors makes me think your might be a little “green”! Just a thought! One of the reasons I love watching your content is because I find many of your color choices for makeup work for me. I have light skin with a mild warm-ish olive undertone, but for the longest time I thought my undertone was a warmish neutral.
I've repurchased Ouai Wave Spray and Bum Bum Cream & Brazilian Crush spray over and over, but I can't think of any other cosmetic or skin care products I've purchased repeatedly in the last decade.
Fantastic video Hannah. The only old standards I have in any beauty area are a good pair of black opaic high waisted leggings. I feel like I've been gettin a cotten pair of Hue ones once a year forever now. The other thing would be a pair of dark leather stomping boots. That's all I ever want to wear. I started with a pair of thrifted Doc's when I was like 13, and then I had Roots Boots for a long time, but for a long time now I've worn (and repurchased) the Holly Grail: Blundstones. As cliche as it is they're just the best, and it's hard imagin anything ever taking their place. It's pretty hard to think of enything else. Cut off T-shirts? Bangs? Everything else is more conceptual.
*There’s another bronzer that I’m pretty sure will work for your skin tone, I have owned it and I’m almost as pale as you. The It Cosmetics Ombré Radiance bronzer is really beautiful, it’s not matte and it’s talc free! You should try it sometime!*
A couple of things: our life, expectations, and standards change over time. So someone who thought that a matte foundation was their 'holy grail' foundation a few years ago may have decided that they actually prefer a more satin or dewy foundation because it's more popular these days and there's a lot of good formulas to choose from. Another thing is that some of us who are more interested in trying lots of things will often learn what does and doesn't work as we go and therefore we will adjust accordingly. There's something about striving and never being satisfied that pushes growth and innovation and helps us to analyse strengths and shortcomings. So in a way I don't know if we would have ever made it into space if we didn't have this drive. It just has financial implications on our budgets if, as you say, we sometimes look for what is new and better even if we have something that 'works'. I don't think I'm still using anything I was using even a few years ago. Definitely not skincare wise, and I can't think of a single product that I'm still using from, say, 3 years ago.
I don't have products I used "forever". I really got into makeup in 2017 and I only started wearing makeup almost every day maybe a year or two ago and I've been experimenting with some different products. The one product I see myself wearing for years to come would probably be a glowy peachy blush, but I'll probably try a new one when I run out of my current one.
The only thing I have as long term staple from years and years ago is the gel roll up liners from maybelline... and I don't think they even have that great long lasting power.
Another product I've also used forever...Maybelline Full n Soft mascara. I use it as a base coat and to coat the "top side" of my upper lashes if that makes sense lol
I'm getting elevated care bear vibes
HAHAHAHAHA
Casual Gucci Louise Poston
Yeah big time 70s. Very cute
This is a really good idea I think! I think I am going to incorporate that thinking into my purchasing habits 🥰
I like the subtle anti Sephora sale vibe you are doing here without titling it like your previous ones 😊
Awww. I love this story.
D'aww. That's adorable.
I wear for real glasses and I think I'm about to get wire frames because people can't see how good my brow game has been 😁
I got a pair or rimless glasses n it really makes a difference. You still see them but they open up ur face so much more. Good for showing off makeup. 👍 Although frames do hide small mistakes. 🤔
I looooovvvvveeee the glasses and your improvement on that dumb coco Chanel quote!
“Hi, I’m Hannah, and I don’t leave sentences hanging”
Iris Apfel would be so proud 👓🍎💚
Love her.
I cackled out loud over the roller pins. I love them and have used them since the late 60’s. Love your channel.
You are the beauty youtuber philosopher that we all need in our lives.
You dressed exactly like the nerdy girl in a 2000's movie and you look adorable
Dude that Coco Chanel joke.... *chefs kiss*
This video made me think immediately
On one blush i had forever. It was a gift from my great grandmother who isn't alive anymore.
I don't want to rebuy it because it isn't cruelty free and i know it wont have the same essence of that gift.
I've been low key stressing about finding a dupe for it, but this video makes me feel like its going to be okey.
I can live my life with my other blushes
Thank you for coming to my ted talk😂
Great video Hannah ❤️
This is so sweet-what is the blush?? Maybe we could help suggest a cruelty free dupe!
@@hanr7488 dainty by mac, it's a mineralize blush
Ooohhh those lotions are great
I’ve had a single urban decay eyeliner since my 12th birthday and i’m almost 18😂 I feel like that makes it a “holy grail”
@Cecile Ganel-- They're my favorite liners as well.
1. changemonger was a tasty word
2. to answer your question, I can only think of one product I have been using forever, and its various shades of the viva la diva bullet lipsticks.
I thought of that one lipliner it’s a pencil.... #9 something?? You’ve been faithful to that forever
Also one of the Kjaer Weis cream blush? Didn’t you buy it like 3 times?
I’m getting updated Velma vibes ! ( my childhood hero !!!) perhaps an orange turtleneck sweater ❤️❤️❤️❤️
(If you do purchase, I would suggest buying from their website as there are TONS of dupes out there that are complete garbage. )
Edit: I just realized that my post above may appear that I missed the deep discussion of our consumer habits. I must confess, I do buy backups. And even backups of those backups. I plan on buying some (many) brow wiz on the Apr 3rd Ulta sale. I CANT STOP MYSELF. What if I ran out of my medium brown or taupe ?.? Aaack. I have zero will power
Oooh! I have been interested in getting dermacol for the longest time but never pulled the trigger. I think I will now. Thanks!
I use Graftobian and Cinema Secrets. It's such good quality at a really reasonable price.
@@RachelDee can you tell me exactly what you bought? I checked the website and I have no idea!
@@RachelDee got it! Thanks 👍
YAS UD primer potion for me too. I remember I was so perturbed when they changed the packaging from the little genie bottle to the tube. LOL
I never knew those were called roller pins! I had some in high school, and my friends and I called them “bobby of all bobbies.” Lol
Which, tbh, is a much better name for them
You're giving me 80s vibes, kinda love it 🤓
I’ve only been wearing makeup since 2015 but nothing I bought then (mostly a handful of garbage NYX products) is still something I consider a favourite. Curious to see what changes and trends I see in my collection in the upcoming years!
"You know what coco channel said, 'before you leave the house, look in the mirror and see if you look cool. If you don't look cool, put on your fake glasses'." Literal LOL.
you’re just so cute Hannah. such precious human we must protect at all costs 😂💛
You say Bonnie Bell like Bonneville and I adore it 🤗 great conversation!
Vintage Elton John!!!!❤️
I can truly only think of four products that I've been using for years now. The list could have been longer, had stuff not been discontinued along the line, but I, too, am a creature of exploration. I like to try new products, and my tastes have changed from when I started wearing makeup in middle school (that black eyeshadow phase.... I pretty much never use it now, how funny to think it was a daily "necessity" back then) and now that I've reached thirty.
Here's my list for anyone curious, however, from oldest to more recent beginnings:
•Revlon Colorstay foundation - I've switched from the oily formula to the matte, and when they introduced the pump I praised the lord, but the color buff 150 has just been consistently the best match I've found across the board of drugstore and higher end ranges)
•Rimmel Stay Matte powder - in high school I PACKED this on--I was very oily and wanted my makeup to last from 6am to 7:30pm including dance practice.
I think I've been using it since 2015, sometime just after adding the beauty water to my routine
WOW I just rambled, my apologies lol
Exactly the kind of video I subscribed for! Super excited
-Come & Get It - Colourpop (it's a perfect pink/gold shimmer but tbh not metallic enough and I've been lowkey looking to replace it w/ something)
-Poodle - Colourpop (Medium pink?)
-Bratty - Colourpop (Bright Orange)
-One or two shades from the Urban Decay Vice 4 palette that I depotted and turned into a magnetic palette
That is all.
Yesss to the roller pins! I have a ton of hair and love mine as well!
Some things I've used forever:
Maybelline Dewy and Smooth Foundation (the only one I'd ever used until this year)
Maybelline Loose Powder, though I'm almost through and I purchased the Wowder instead.
L'oréal Lash Paradise, though I feel it will be unseated
FAB Ultra Repair Cream
Glossier Gen G in Leo! I'm on my 3rd tube, I fully panned it twice. I'm tiring of the dryness of the formula though, and I think I may prefer balms now 🙊
Elf Clear Lip Lacquer (like 10 tubes in)
Buxom Hot Toddy Gloss (I'm panning my 5th tube right now, but actually no longer love the formula or shade.
Pleasee Hannah, make a video/live on using a green corrector in lieu of foundation! Is that how you use it? Or spot concealing?
She just uses it over primer and before her concealers. It's in her base routine video! :)
Omg i love the story time with the products! such a fun watch! 😄
so you mentioned how the small bobby pins will become brutalized by your hair, which I definitely get.
Bare Minerals original . I've used it for over 30 years. My skin LOVES that powder. It has been a game changer for the condition of my skin.
I've got a short list too. I've used the nars soft matte concealer for about 3 years now and before that I used a boots own brand concealer for about 8 years I'd say lol
I've used and loved my too faced semi sweet chocolate bar palette since 2012 now, but I do use it less now I have more eyeshadow. I also do have a backup palette as they discontinued it so I didnt want to run out of it and then not be able to rebuy it because after all these years I Still haven't found replacement eyeshadow dupes for 3 of my favourite shadows. Which is mental considering how much eyeshadow I've tried. They are unique 😚
I used the bourjouis healthy mix foundation for like ten years lol but don't wear foundation now really
I've used the rimmel brow powder for years now and the smashbox primeriser. Oh and the physcians formula butter bronzer is like 5 years old and still going strong 👌
Ok I have a fair few items lol
But you're right holy grails get replaced a lot and backups is not a good idea for me except for that eyeshadow palette
This kind of content is the reason why r/MakeupRehab loves HLP 🥺
that insight about holy grail products makes so much sense, it almost feels ridiculous to me that I've never thought about them that way. My Bareminerals BarePro concealer is a recent HG of mine (even though I've only used it once LMAO I've never had a base product match my coloring and preferences so well),
but I'll try to stop myself from thinking of it as a forever staple, and just enjoy it in the moment
I am obsessed with these giant glasses on you! It’s reminding me of Yorkie from the Black Mirror episode of San Junipero!
Ok, wow. I have now finished the video and the end just read me left, right, and center lol
Leaving a comment for the algorithm! Keep it up Hannah 👍
Your eyebrows look great, but your cheeks are *glowing* 🤩
I use those giant Bobby pins, too. I have a fro, so I need something that will stay put.
Ohhh my god I LOVE the cicapair color correction treatment... tiktok made me buy it and I will never go back ✌️
I don't have products I used "forever".
I love that mascara! Not many mascaras leave your lashes feeling soft.
