"It's bad enough that you sell your waking life for minimum wage... but now they get your dreams for free." The most profound (and somewhat depressing) words ever spoken.
I watch this movie every 2 months hoping I've forgotten it. This movie is an experience. The highest synonym for beautiful. Makes me sad, happy, awake and out all at the same time.
This is one minute of my life spent well c: I remember first watching this movie and getting to this part. I cried a little . And its funny how real knowledge makes you feel compared to forced/false knowledge aka school
"The trick is to combine your waking rational abilities with the infinite possibilities of your dreams, because if you can do that you can do anything." True words of wisdom.
Art, as it is in this scene, can be comforting. Comfort, especially in a world like today's, is a rare and a valuable item to receive (or to give - my kudos to all involved here). However, for an individual (including myself), comfort is not all there is. Over the course of a lifetime (however long it may be), it is more important to attend to one's responsibilities than it is to receive comfort. On the giving side, giving comfort may be a way of attending to one's responsibilities - and a powerful one at that! Attending to one's responsibilities is, to a huge extent, what gives meaning to this life. If someone does this, personal comfort is one of the many magnificent results.
the movie does preach Christianity but only in context, it basically says accept who you are and your dreams are what is important. i think the reason it centers around Christianity is because the main character is Caucasian and more than likely Christian, it does feature other beliefs such as Hinduism. fantastic movie none the less, i was on acid and it came on tv randomly and i hadn't even heard of it before. it seriously blew me away.
@Kohdii "just as everyone else knows nothing" This is an oxford worth definitive quote for the term close minded. You literally made my day, COME ON THE HUMAN RACE YEAHHHHH.
0:50 he is speaking about life. So do what you like! Otherwise you will be disappointed, realizing after dead that you could have enjoyed this life (dream ;)
Sigh, I came so close to accidentally having a lucid dream last night...I had some radiohead playing quietly, and I was kinda focusing on the music as I was falling asleep, and I had this strong falling sensation (which is something that happens if you are entering sleep while conscious) but I kinda freaked out, then I was paralyzed for a couple seconds before waking up entirely.
Yeah, its a form of animation called rotoscoping. They draw over every frame, its amazing. Only watched 10 minutes of this movie, looks amazing. A Scanner Darkly is a masterpiece.
It's kind of ironic when you think about it. In this exact clip the guy says that the trick is to combine the waking rational abilities with the infinite possibilities of you dreams, if you do that you can do anything. Well supposedly Einstein was day dreaming about what it would be like to ride on a wave of light and if you were moving right along with it, what would the front of a wave of light look like, and so came his idea of relativity.
we have to free ourselves of the chains in our minds before freeing ourselves from the chains on our limbs. imo. and... this is like the 4th video today we've both watched
Aladin Madarfacar Not when you look out for others and see how our happiness comes off someone's slave work in china, but yes Capitalism can be great, if you don't care for anyone but yourself.
You mean the socialized programs that exist which have corrupted genuine capitalism? The USA is not capitalistic anymore by any means, it's more interventionist and socialist if anything. The USA is probably one of the few nations that still has faux capitalism.
@BigVicTheBadSeed "You've got great men like Einstein" Einstein's "hard evidence" started with dreams, much like anyone's. You have to develop a unique theory before you can prove anything. He even said once he pictured himself chasing after a beam of light. “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”- Albert Einstein
I dream about work about half the time it was about 85 percent of the time years ago. I'm working hard at not doing that today. So we sell our waking lives for little or nothing and they get our dreams for free. Sounds about rite.
I Had a Friend Once That Told Me The Greatest Mistake in Life Is To Think That YOu Are Alive When Really You're Asleep And Lifes Waiting For You ... The Trick Is To Combine Your Waking Rational Abilties With The Infinite Posiblities of Your Dreams Becasuse If YOu Can Do That You Can Do Anything...
I don't want to throw all that hippie crap about life being an ilusion and this consousnes stuff on you, but you've got to admit, this movie has some pretty good ideas and makes people think which is a good thing.
@JCStanton117 I think he meant, you're more alive and awake in your dreams than when you're awake. Just the idea of going through the motions just to finally go to sleep and have awesome dreams makes it seem like your dreams are your life and everything else in between is just you sleeping
@BigVicTheBadSeed This movie wasn't aimed to be philosophical. It was simply an artistic twist by putting the underlying philosophical pinnings at the fore-front (script) & the daily doings at the back. It used the field of philosophy, along with science, commerce, literature, politics, & others, in order to fluctuate and orbit around the idea of dreams. The movie is meant to be about dreams and it beautifully transitions relevant philosophical topics to accentuate the idea it had of dreaming.
@wazpoke the guy playing the uk is a terrific blues musician - Guy Forsythe. If you go on a music hunt, be sure to check out some of his older work w/ this band - The Asylum Street Spankers.
Drag the fingers over the strings hitting them more consecutively rather than simultaneously to obtain the almost arpeggio-like effect, intertwined also with the simultaneous strumming style, hitting all strings in one motion.
That's the point, it delves into the mystery and wonder that we all contemplate about life, as opposed to the science and cold hard facts. The movie is subjective, it doesn't tell you a certain way to think or act, it's simply to make you wonder. I mean, what did you expect anyhow?
I remembered these words when I dreamed I was at work last night. I dropped everything and walked out of that place. It was a rather liberating feeling when I woke up.
@brownstain3000 that is Guy Forsyth, he is a great Guitarist/Musician. Check out some of his stuff here on youtube. I particularly love his song "If I was Sick"
Religion is our personal war between God as "I AM" and God as "LORD" - consciousness vs submissive hierarchies; self-realisation vs regimentation. Personally I think it's pretty good that as a race we question everything, although I agree with your comments that different viewpoints will lead to disharmony.
catch my drift. mmmm.... drift everything just curves back into the feel of 'waking life' can't speak a word without it sinking back in this mess, blaah. Like 'Alice through the looking glass', but with no music or poems, no spritely words or uplifting thoughts just dooooooooooown (decrescendo).
Anyway, i assume you all have seen 'A Scanner Darkly' if your reading this, if not this is how you should proceed. Then check out 'The Virgin Suicides', not the same at all, but has this kind of Depressive, silently suffering angst to it... with narration.
i love this film and this is a great scene.. but sometimes i feel that people are reaching and reaching and endlessly reaching when they talk about existentialism... i love how this film shows both ends of the spectrum tho: the words of wisdom and the total bullshit.. and everything in between.. and there are going to be people everywhere who mistake the nonsense for utter genius.. which is the case with anything really.. golden spirals and richard linklater thumbs up on the eve of your day
If you live like you are in a dream then you will explore that which you want. Assuming you are balanced in life, then your dreams which should be assumed to be your life will be invariably good. If misfortune takes you, remember: It's only a dream.
Technically, lucid dreaming is not necessarily the same as having control over your dreams. Lucid dreaming is just being aware that you are dreaming. You can be aware that you are dreaming and not have control. However, being lucid does make controlling your dreams easier. It's also possible to have dream control without lucidity. One does not require the other.
@fitzykid1990 Mine too fitz, I've known about it for a long time now and not a single day goes by since that something from it doesn't enter my mind. It is simply a wonderful creation, a wonderful vision come to life.
Everyone dreams. Most don't remember it, cause most of it is meaningless drivel. Dreaming is where your brain organises memories... So If you don't learn anything super important and you're short term memory recall isn't the best (research Dream Journals) then of course you won't remember them. Everyone Dreams. Dream on.
...Live life without the answers and accept you don't truly have them and you will be more in tune to what is actually happening. BTW I'm not kunjaku, I'm his little brother. I don't have an account.
@trueChaos23 "Hipster." Ohhhh, thats a funny word. I dont even know what a hipster is man so I am definitly not one of those. LOL! I dont think I know alot at all my friend. Its just you havent woken up yet. Dont worry. You will. Mabey not in this life. But soon, my friend. You will. You will. Hope the best to you and your loved ones. Love and Light. P.S - Life is an illusion. Consciousness is what creates our every moment and beyond. Without consciessness, nothing would exist.
@BloodyBarbier Drugs are a catalyst and tool to reach higher levels of thinking in order for humans to come to some of the conclusions (or atleast fathom) made in the movie, when used properly, in my opinion. Plus the visuals? It's a full package while on a psychoactive drug.
the best movie ever.
confirmo
"It's bad enough that you sell your waking life for minimum wage... but now they get your dreams for free."
The most profound (and somewhat depressing) words ever spoken.
I've been saying that phrase at work since I saw this movie 20 years ago.
@@JoeMac1983 I just saw this movie yesterday and k can’t get it out of my head

I watch this movie every 2 months hoping I've forgotten it. This movie is an experience. The highest synonym for beautiful. Makes me sad, happy, awake and out all at the same time.
I almost shed a tear every time I see this scene.
i wish i had someone to talk about this film with, it was amazing

This is one minute of my life spent well c:

Nunca voy a olvidar esa película....
Menos está parte que te hace cuestionar que tanto vale el trabajo que desempeñas
I've awoken and I can't wake up!
Wtf ? U mean u woke up from sleep ?
"The trick is to combine your waking rational abilities with the infinite possibilities of your dreams, because if you can do that you can do anything."
True words of wisdom.
i really need to learn this on guitar, so i can play it forever
Ukulele baby❤

Such an amazing movie, I really find it hard to describe the feeling i get from watching it.
I'm coming off an acid trip, this is amazing. Wish i still had the movie recorded.
this film is brilliant discovered it yesterday and i'v been thinking about it all day
the movie does preach Christianity but only in context, it basically says accept who you are and your dreams are what is important. i think the reason it centers around Christianity is because the main character is Caucasian and more than likely Christian, it does feature other beliefs such as Hinduism.

we're all free; the chains are in our minds
I love how they look like they're floating.
One of my favorite parts!
Lucid dreaming is awesome!
this was the exact clip i was looking for, i love his little tune plays and i wish to learn it
@Kohdii "just as everyone else knows nothing" This is an oxford worth definitive quote for the term close minded. You literally made my day, COME ON THE HUMAN RACE YEAHHHHH.
Badass movie. He kicks some ass at the ukulele
He's strumming a D chord (0:27)- and holding down the one string while still playing the D (0:31).
It's beautifully crafted to match his story.
changed the way i look at life altogether this movie is unrealistically real.
0:50 he is speaking about life. So do what you like! Otherwise you will be disappointed, realizing after dead that you could have enjoyed this life (dream ;)
This scene influenced me to take up the overalls
That movie is changing my life every day.

I wish it changed my life.
But I will spread this movie to change the lives around me.
I love this movie so much.
Yeah, its a form of animation called rotoscoping. They draw over every frame, its amazing. Only watched 10 minutes of this movie, looks amazing. A Scanner Darkly is a masterpiece.
I don't know why, but whenever I feel bad, I put on this little clip here and suddenly...I just feel better
he's rockin that ukalele.
I need to understand the tricks both from that of others and especially that of my own. Thanks Guy.
I want to hear a 10 minute instrumental loop of this song. I'd totally buy it.

God damn I really do hate this capitalistic working society we have created. Nightmare
Did we really? i didn't create anything that i'm sure, yet i have to carry that burden. We are the final product, see you later fellow caw.
Aladin Madarfacar Not when you look out for others and see how our happiness comes off someone's slave work in china, but yes Capitalism can be great, if you don't care for anyone but yourself.
CrazyFoxAstral Same exact way I feel.

Its not capitalism's fault that you need to work for food. Animals do it too.
It should inspire all of you to pick up the lost art of lucid dreaming :P

I had these dreams. Starting having them even more after I quit the job. Darn you retail!
I actually have done that before, one of those shitty dreams about work. Never thought of it that way, but it makes since.

Magnífico. Esse filme me move de um jeito inexplicável.

it is not depressing its liberating you will only get depressed if you dont see the bigger picture peace and love
And, the Oscar goes to - Slavoj Žižeeeek!!! :))))))))))))
favorite scene!!

Life is priceless and dreams are free... So create your life and start your journey
God bless
Very good!!!
That's not lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is knowing that you're dreaming and having control over all of your movements and actions.
Best : D Love it!!!
one of the best parts =)
same director same artists, but this is more dreamy
this is a very inspiring part.
Wow, really speaks
I think 9 people don't want to come to terms with the fact that their daily lives might possibly be unequivocally meaningless.
