Ditto here! Pre-Inspector Morse John Thaw as a journo instead of a copper. Very engaging drama, and am looking forward to more of this series, for sure. Thanks for posting.
Great thanks for uploading this look forward to Monday for the next one . adore anything with John Thaw. Just can’t understand how I’ve never heard of this series before. 1984 must have been a year I didn’t have much time for TV I suppose .
I hadn't heard of it myself until a few months ago when one of my subscribers recommended it. He also recommended another Roger Marshall creation, Floodtide, which you might also enjoy and which appears on my channel.
@@stumagoo2395 I had Travelling Man up on my channel, but it was recently taken down in the UK due to copyright. However, the Talking Pictures channel in the UK starts showing them from Sat 23rd of Nov - later today.
This series is good ,but the tape must have been sitting on the LWT shelf for a good few years ,as the date at the end says 1981( December looking by the snowy conditions) & yet the series was first ( only ) shown on the ITV network in summer 1984!
@@FoogouFilmsyes I remember that , Shot on video , really nice narrow boat scenes & good storylines, it also features Irish actor Tony Doyle who later appeared in the early 90s series Between the Lines!
Mitch *Great series* . (It's still available on dvd) ;) The strongest episode/ best storyline involves Mitch dealing with a _far right_ national front football members. Thank you for sharing
The only problem I have with John Thaw is every time I see him in anything, Jack Regan springs to mind and I can't settle with seeing John playing a different character to Regan. It's probably as The Sweeney was my favourite show of all time and John played a massive part in its success. Apparently ITV kept trying to entice John to reprise his role as Jack Regan in the early 80s, but this time as a private detective on his own, but John said he was finished playing detectives... until Morse came along.
Yes he's a versatile actor, such as the YTV series ' Home to Roost', but he also played ' pre Sweeney ' Villains in two shows around 1972, first as a cheesed off Army comrade in ' The Frighteners ' ( LWT) & as an Italian gangster in a 1973 ep of ' The Protectors'(ATV) with Robert Vaughan. Prior to this he's been in Budgie & the 1974 comedy ' Thick as Thieves ' ( both LWT).
@@FoogouFilms thats fine by me cos i dont mind short series of anything between lets say 3 and 12ish episodes(harrys game 3 eps) to 12 episodes(beiderbecke trilogy) and it makes them cheaper too 😃
Because I enjoyed this episode so much, I looked for the rest of the episodes...They are unavailable, marked as a 'private video.' Are you going to be able to post them for us to watch? I - we - sure hope so! Thank you so much!
On the thumbnail to this episode I wrote "New Episode Each Monday" (8pm UK time). I upload my videos like how we used to watch TV shows. Pleased you're enjoying it.
@@FoogouFilms Oops! Obviously I didn't read that so thank you for pointing it out to me. Apologies for my oversight. Clever to upload them in that manner. Thank you again for sharing this series with us.
@@laurabrowning7973 No probs. There's a generation now (binge-watchers) who miss out on the sense of anticipation in waiting for new episodes of a programme you like.
@@FoogouFilmsThe character Jack Regan was the complete opposite to John Thaw in real life, bar the smoking and possibly drinking. Thaw was quite shy, very modest and didn't like the limelight - just shows what a brilliant actor he was.
Indeed. If there is background music, it should almost not be noticed. So often now you can't hear the dialogue for it, and less able to suspend disbelief.
Just saw that the other videos in this series that you uploaded have gone. I was hooked and looking forward to the next episodes. Guess it may have been due to copyright.
You mean other episodes of Mitch? @FoogouFilms Thank you for your reply. I am so happy that I was wrong and now look forward to the Monday uploads. He had an alibi. He had the ticket. They harassed him and he couldn't go through again, what he went through with the other incident. He had an alibi. I think the guy who found him was a candidate.
Weird, it's the same face but John Thaw seems to move it to play every character; Regan isn't as hard looking as Mitch or as quiet and lonely as Morse.
I agree, it was a strangely unsatisfying ending. What was the motive? Was it because the boy was a nuisance and broke windows etc (ref the putty @artymiss77)?
@ I think the implication was as he'd already attacked two young boys that he was prone to it for whatever reason. While questioned at the police station he's messing with some putty, earlier Mitch had seen some putty on the murdered boy's desk and asked his mother why it was there and she didn't know so there was a putty connection between murdered boy and murderer! 😆 But I agree it was an odd, low key ending. I found it odd and low key all the way through, and the way Mitch and his editor were saying a murdered boy wasn't front page news was strange when of course it is.

The beginnings of Morse :)
That's what I thought too. The personality Thaw portrays in this is much closer to Morse than Regan, say.
