Is there a correct way to wear a wristwatch?...Let's see...
I get that question a lot, especially from clients that are buying their first watch or just getting into watch collecting. They want to know if there is a right and wrong way to wear a luxury wrist watch. That's the reason I made this video.
There are many opinions on how how a watch should be worn and people certainly have their own preferences, but I'm going to give you some opinions and suggestions based on my experience. I hope that this alleviates the itch!
One of the theories being thrown around regarding this topic is that a wristwatch should be worn above the wrist bone. I think that's not really etched in stone!
When I wear a watch above the bone, it feels like I'm wearing a pair of jeans all the way up above the bellybutton, which is not very complementary for any male crotch region! Wearing the watch too high up on the wrist is also uncomfortable for some people, since this might cause the crown to dig into their hand.
I prefer to wear the watch on the bone, meaning right over my actual wrist bone. That's my personal preference. Even though this will typically cause the band to oscillate over and under the bone when you move around (especially for metal watches), it always centers back over the bone (at least for me).
If wearing your wrist watch on the bone is not particularly comfortable for you, you can also try to wear it below the bone, the position a luxury watch naturally gravitates to for people who like to wear it a bit loose or when your arm is raised in a vertical position.
That brings me to my next point of discussion: tight or loose?
I know watch collectors that like to remove extra links from the band, so that the watch fits extra tight. I really don't recommend this, but if it inundates your soul with some weird sense of satisfaction, then so be it!
Furthermore, when you wear a watch too tight, it might fit OK when you wake up in the morning, but by the end of the day (and after you've retained a bit of water), it can definitely make you feel a bit claustrophobic!
So I keep coming back back to preference when it comes to how the watch should sit on the wrist. Preference is definitely the most important thing. Nevertheless, I would like to give you some of my guidelines.
* If your skin is tightening up a bit when you close the watch strap, then the watch might be too tight.
* If you can rotate the watch completely around your wrist over your wrist bone, then the watch might fit too loose.
One thing that I would like to point out about wearing a wristwatch too loose is that doing so causes excessive wear and tear on the links. At the same time, wearing it too tight might stretch out the band. You don't really want any of these two things to happen.
Some people also want to know on what hand to wear a watch. I'm right handed, so I wear it on my left (otherwise, it feels weird). But that's something else that's up to you and on what side you feel comfortable wearing it. The same holds true for wearing two watches at the same time (however, this is something that I only recommend if the two wristwatches you choose to wear are very high end models).
Other than that, it's all based on your taste. How do you like to wear your watch, on the bone, over the bone, loose, tight, right hand, left hand, etc.? Let me know in the comments below. Also, comment on the topics that you would like us to cover on future videos!

Above the elbow, end of discussion.
Put it inside the pocket.
Underrated comment, lol.
XD hahahaha oh man that was good haha
I totally agree.
😂
if you wear an expensive watch that's too slack - people will think it's fake...it's like a bad fitted suit..
+TheWeardale1 correct.
Who cares what people think.
@@mokujin29 On many fronts, yes...you're correct, *BUT* the # of people who get triggered by way of comments on social media and YT, *CLEARLY* indicate that yes...people *DO* care what others think! :)
Excellent video Eric. To add to your point of swelling. I'm in FL as well and going from AC to outside humidity causes my wrist to swell enough that the watch becomes noticeably tighter.
Two things I like tight: my women and my watches.
I agree on One!!
Hugo Lopez LOL
women & watches are best when loose...
@@TenTen32 Nope!
Yep all the women you 'payed' for unlike your watch, because you can't steal them . . . . . . . like your watch.
You knocked this out of the park once again. I totally agree with everything you said. Me personally I like to be able to fit the tip of my pinky between the watch and wrist, just enough play where its comfortable. Keep up the vids bro.
I like to wear the watch slightly below the wrist bone, but not too loose that it drags too far down once you raise your arm. Good points though!
Totally agree with you: on the bone, not too tight nor too loose and on the left wrist. Great video!
I agree with you 100%. A little loose and on the bone - but if it falls either way - it is OK. Great video!
I tend to wear my watches fairly loose. Can't do tight. Especially a heavier dive watch, got to have quite a bit of play to avoid feeling claustrophobic of sorts.
Totally agree! There are no hard and fast rules. It's about preference and comfort.
For me, this has a lot to do with the shape and size of the back of the watch and the angle of the lugs, and which part of the wrist that the watch best fits against. This varies with the different watches that I own.
E-Dap always great content. It depends on which watch I wear. Some metal bands are a bit loose and some are perfect like my Pepsi GMT. My IWC Aquatimer on a rubber strap I wear pretty tight. So for me the band style is the difference on how it lays on my wrist.
My favourite channel on youtube. You got me hooked bro, Can't wait to begin working and buy my first proper watch
It also depends on your wrist style. Some people have a slightly bigger wrist bone, or skinny forearms with no padding on the bones. They can't wear the watch on the bone. They need to wear it above the bone. Also, a loose watch will often tilt and slide and you'll sometimes need to hold the watch with your other hand in order to look at the time. I think that the best way to wear the watch is in the loosest possible way without it sliding on the bone.
Thank you for the advice it really helped me for my new Tag Pepsi. Cheers!
I agree, It's All in the Wrist. It Allcomes down to style and taste. Great Video!
Great video. I like the Ezy-Link that Rolex has on the new bracelets. That extra 5mm makes a huge difference especially when its hot and your wrist may swell a little.
Great video Eric. You´ve helped me a lot!!
I wouldn't ever sub to this stuff. But in a pinch, I watched 3 videos for these tips and yours was the best ! Good stuff.
Great thoughts. The way a person wears a watch also depends on their career/ work activity. I am a retired Marine pilot. Those in jobs requiring physical/ tactical activity wear their watches tight. A sniper is not going to want a watch banging around on his wrist as he sights in on a target. Just like I don’t want to locate and secure my watch if I am timing something mission critical in the cockpit. Like dropping bombs “on time/ on target.” It needs to be right where I can take my hand off the throttle for a split second, chk it and get my hand back to the power/ HOTAS. Those w/ more relaxed jobs can wear their watch differently. Just thought I’d throw in my 2 cents or secs.
yo, i can agree with that
Korean Emperor I don’t know. You tell me. I have some friends who are lawyers but we never talk watches.
gotta love the half link adjustment on my CHNR
Ceramic Sub AKA The Landlord watch and the black is my favorite Love your videos Eric 👍👍👍
Great video. Some people just don't know how to properly wear a watch.
Hi just a quick question I’ve recently bought a new watch and have had 3 links removed. It still feels slightly loose, it slides below the bone and above, roughly 5 cm above the bone. I can fit my middle finger in the gap when it’s on my wrist, do you recon I should have another link taken out? I recon I would feel more comfortable if it wasn’t moving about. Worst part is I had the links taken out at a watch experts and he said it was fine. Cheers Sam
above the bone , can dig a finger under the clasp . Also i noticed my wrists is the biggest first thing in the morning when i first put the watch on . I think they swell when i sleep or something .
JoeyJoe lower your salt intake .
I like on the Bone also. You get the best of both worlds. Nice Job Eric.
Your point on loose or tight is true. I cannot stand having my watches too loose but people have told my me whole life loose is superior.
This is the best video about fitment and its hilarious. TY brother!
So basically what you’re saying is wear a watch however you like it. Good instruction. Bravo
Eric, what's a good price range I should keep in mind when looking for that Rolex Submariner? Thanks.
Above the bone for me, but I tend to pick watches that allow me to easily adjust the strap/bracelet to my current preference. Glidelock or similar technology is the way to go on a bracelet.
Very helpful and informative! Also one more tip, if you go to bed while wearing your watch, loosen it up a little bit so you still have access to watch and it's more comfortable.
Couldn’t agree more. We were are watches exactly the same. Thanks bro!
fully agree with literally everything he said
Gold Sub looks great. I need to buy a watch from this guy. Great vid
great video thanks, was wondering if i was wearing mine correctly having been told it should be above the wrist bone as you said it feels odd and too high up gone back to on the bone and 1 notch less tight like i have always done :)
I was curious, and then I was thinking I was gonna hate the video... and then I realized it was over and I enjoyed it... 😂
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 😉
What about wearing a mechanical watch and an electronic watch on the other hand like a fitbit or an Apple Watch
Thanks for the vid Eric! I wear my watch under the bone
I wear my watch above the bone or on the bone . It depends on is it comfortable and wear a watch below the bone is uncomfortable for me because of the crown .------------What do you think about wear 4 Richard Mille on each wrist to make it looks like armor ?
I see that it depends on the dial size , for me anything 42 or 44 prefer it above the wrest and the opposite if it’s 40 and below i prefer on the bone , also it depends if you are wearing formal or casual , if formal i wear it on the bone and above if i am dressed casually .
On the bone. I did remove the diver extension of my 50th anniversary Sea-Dweller. Thank goodness for that glidelock. Rolex for the win! ✅👍🇺🇸
Yessir I love wearing my watches but yeah a metal watch keep just a tad loose so it doesn’t irritate your skin
I have found after years of wearing a watch if its to tight and below the bone it can actually damage the nerves in your wrist. (Tends to be a smart watch issue)
Thanks For The Advice . .My watch slides up my arm all the Time. This was very helpful
Amen!! I wear it the same way!! But here is one for you, wearing a Hublot on the bone tears the skin to hell (just maybe me), would be interested to hear other people’s experience on that.
Thanks so much for your tips Eric, love your sense of humor, cheers !!!
Right on brother, agree with you on all counts. A little loose because otherwise it gets yuck sweaty. Not good for leather and just uncomfortable on metal.
That’s why I love the glide lock , nice one Eric...
I think it also depends on the watch/strap combo. I would wear a diver on a bracelet looser than on silicone. I adjust my NATOs on the fly throughout the day so they hang out right on the bone. Leather band dress watches stay above the bone so they slide under the shirt cuff.
Also depends if the bracelet has a toolless micro-adjust. Game changer when working out comfort Vs wrist size changes during the day
If I wear tight but above wrist bone .So, it will be affect on my bone or not
ive taken out all the links on my watch yet its still loose. i wonder what I can do
I wear my watch, believe it or not, on the INSIDE (underside) of my wrist. I believe it is a habit that started many years ago. Have you heard of anyone else wearing it in that position? Nice, informative video.
Ya my dad did that all his life. I'm not sure where came from
My uncle also does thay
I was a train engineer and job required all matter of things timed as well as constantly moving hands and arms for speed adjustments of the locomotive, I have worn it loose and warn it almost snug, but always defaulted to a tightness that it would stay in one position on the wrist, usually below the bone almost snug, to this day the same
You’re exactly right. On the bone.
Not so loose as to be able to rotate all the way around your wrist.
It’s a clock attached to a bracelet. You’d never wear a bracelet that tight.
Everyone has theire preference. But there is a correct way in terms to avoid moving limitations with certain watches. But its all about the type of wrists, sensitivity, aesthetics,...
A very well informed video here as always ;)
Believe it or not i saw a guy wearing a pam as a belt. And i most say it kinda look nice. So yeah wear it whatever you want. But at least wear it in a place where you can watch the time. Afterall a watch is meant for doing so. Well... some are kinda hard to check the time... but thats another topic.
What do you call a belt made out of watches?
A waist of time.
mine is loose it goes up and down when im not wearing sleeves
I've heard once, that wearing a bracelet too loose will intensify stretch. A lot of movement between the links i guess.
My wrist is 6,2 inches. Do you think a rolex submariner that is 40mm could feet my slim wrist?
My new Rocos watch fits just like the one you are wearing. I am used to a bit tighter but think one more link out and it would be too tight.
that's true, people just like a size t shirt or a fashion that have a certain type and they should wear what's make them really fit and comfortable and just like u, i'm also wearing my watch right on my bone.
I liked wearing them lose until it get hooked it on a cable at work ..3 days later I had to have surgery so now I wear them tight
love this topic. keep uploading.
Had a good laugh, great vid Eric.
Cool video Erick! Now I know my watchband is to loose. What do you think is more elegant, leather band or bracelet?
Can you do a video on the best combination of watch and outfit? Ex. With Tshirt and jeans, it's best to wear rubber strap or metal band but not leather? Thanks
If i'm wearing my watch that has bracelet then i like it a bit fit, like it won't move up or down. If i'm wearing my strap watches i make sure that they are just one whole loosen up to perfect fit.
Preach brother 😎👍 totally agree with your statements
i wear on the bone or above. i wear a submariner and the crown is super sharp and digs into my hand, causing marks if i wear it low
I hated my submariner, way too sharp, i switched to Yachtmaster
The maxicase lugs are bit big on my sub too need a link put on my bracelet soon my glidelock is maxed out
1. Position: I believe how high or low you wear your watch depends on the length of your arms (Im tall with long arms, so my elbows are further from my wrists), but having it behind the bone is just infinitely more comfortable (no crown digging into your hand, or flat case back rubbing that rounded bone)
2. Tightness, I think this comes down to how well you’re able to size a specific watch, but I don’t like having to re-position the case on my wrist to get it to sit straight, and sometimes watches wear thinner when tighter. Submariner for example, if I wear it on the looser side, the case hovers over my wrist because of the case back that protrudes, giving it a less refined look. Whereas if I wear it tighter, the case actually sits flat on my wrist & makes the watch look much slimmer.
Eric to me its a matter of confort. I also enjoy natos and zukus...Tank you for the video. 🙋
The Theory of wearing a wristwatch... very enlightening to learn this knowledge. 🤔
Good video I always wondered that myself. I too like it on the bone. I also wondered which side do you remove links when sizing the watch. The 12 o clock side or 6? Or evenly?
Evenly. Me personally, i always remove one link more on the 6 o'clock position so the watch-face leans towards me (when the watch is moving on the wrist).
Nice video mate
Its weird because its either to tight where it hurts my wrist or to loose where it slides all the way to my elbow so im not sure how to go about this lol
Same
On a related subject...I have a tan genuine croc strap on my Navitimer..I wear it a little loose, but when the weather is hot and humid, the damn thing gets sweat stained..I hate that..
This is an interesting video...Thanks
I appreciate your perspective on this topic Eric thank you.
I think it looks the best on the bone, but it will slide around a bit, which is normal, so it's not like it's glued to your skin.
What exact sun glasses are those? help anyone? their awesome!!!
What sunglasses/model are those ?
Hi Eric, I have a burning question hopefully you can answer me. I have a Rolex sub that I bought recently. There’s occasion I have shake my wrist violently, example: shaking the ink out of the pen. Will this kind of sudden hard movement damage the mechanisms in the watch or will they come loose?
Dragonnetx Paul. Man it's a Rolex. A bit shaking isn't going to hurt it. One of the toughest makes it's built to get knocked. surprised you didn't know that.
TheDavecroft yo dude, I’m a noob in Rolex watches as it’s my first Rolex since April this year. After seeing videos of case back opening, I saw how small and dedicate the parts are and can’t help worrying the components will get loose from violent shaking lol. Thanks for the assurance from you dude 👍🏻
Dragonnetx Paul Yeah it's a delicate movement like most watches but Rolex put a tank of a case around it!
TheDavecroft that’s what it’s worth bro. I love it 👍🏻
Yea although I’m not a fan of a little loose my seiko samurai was just too tight with that one link coming off so now it sits in the middle of the bone but goes up and down. Something I gotta get use to good thing is it doesn’t rotate just to gotta get use to it 😅
i think exactly like you do on this topic!
Patek on my left, AP on my right, all on my arms.
Torsten Dimpflmeier Got my AP going psycho
And Seiko 5 around both ankles.
And Pandora around the ankle?
I like the way you speak and explain
Great video. Glidelock comes in handy for comfort throughout the day :)
G1234 X The glide lock is the best in the industry 👍👍👍
I almost regret having the glidelock. I'm always adjusting it.
I like my watches semi-tight.
I wear leather strapped ones and i like it so it doesn't move around but i can rotate it a bit if i want to otherwise it can get unfomfortbale. I could make it tighter but then the skin under the srtap gets all moist and cannot breathe.
Yeah when i wear my ap tight i get wrinkles on my wrist
Most importantly is blood circulation,You can loosing it up on heavy watch.(And your ability check the time,) In the end of day, adjustment is needed. Not everyone is the same, Good video.
Eric, I really like your channel. (The sunglasses are cool and don't bother me a bit). And by the way, the background for this video is beautiful, and that gold Sub looks great on you. I want to respectfully disagree with you on proper wristwatch wear, although as you say, it's an opinion. I would say that "the Boy Scout method" for securing your watch to your body is: just inside of the wrist bone with enough tightness that you can easily push a pinky finger under the lugs. That method ensures that the watch will not hula hoop on the wrist, and by being inside of the wrist bone, your watch will not be subject to the stresses of all the maneuvers your wrist and hand has to do throughout the day. This method protects your watch from damage and from bracelet stretch. Also, when you need to see the face of your watch to tell time or to see how much air you have left in your aqualung, the watch is tight enough that it will obey and you can see it to observe the data you need from your watch with ever having to use the other hand to bring the watch face into proper view. Although you say this feels too tight for you, please try it, after some time you will see this is the superior way to wear your wrist watch. With this method, the back of your hand will never be able to touch the crown of the watch and put pressure on the springbars, possibly popping them out when you have a blue marlin on the hook and the rod and reel is in your left hand, lol. I see people all the time over at Hodinkee wearing watches like they are hipster bracelets. This is incorrect. That is why it is called a "watch band" or a "wrist band"---it should carefully bind the watch to you securely and comfortably. Think of the pilot's who wore their watches over the sleeve of the flight suit, or divers who wore them over their wetsuit sleeve. Give it a try. Great channel.
Oddly enough, my watch is very tight first thing in the morning. As the day progresses it remains fairly snug but is no longer as tight.
Once you get some food in you it usually does it
I’m a lefty BUT when I was in the Marine Corps, all males were required to wear their wristwatch on their the left. Same with belts(a traditional regular belt), you always put your belt through the loops started on the left side first. Females from what I was told were suppose to wear their wristwatch on the right.
like the background pic this episode!
Where should the clasp be?
Great video. Such complexity to wear a wristwatch Lol
That video was very helpful Eric
Thank You for Watching!!!$$$
I am a right handed and I wear my watch on my right. Its comfortable for me. I've tried on my left hand but I will always end up looking at my right hand but the watch wouldn't be there.
that's why rolex wear so well. you can quick adjust in just seconds depending if you're in warm or colder conditions.
i wear it on the bone. one of the reasons why I rock a ceramic sub everyday is because of the glide lock glasp. I always loosen up the fit in the afternoon.
You are totally right in my opinion, I like it on the bone. I think it looks stupid, and feels uncomfortable off the bone. Tighten it properly and it won't hurt. If it's too loose it won't sit properly either. I go by a finger thickness of loose play.
