  • Curious? Let's find out!
In this sit-down "Learn with Lyss" style video, I review a few studies and get to the bottom of whether or not a traditional motorized treadmill is easier than a self-propelled AirRunner.
Additionally, we will dig into how they differ mechanically and even how to adjust training output and effort when using one or the other.

I totally prefer the manual treadmill over the motorized. Feels much better and you can walk backwards 💪

I recently bought a non-motorized treadmill (Assault ProRunner). I also have a motorized treadmill (True). One thing that I noticed is that non-motorized treadmill is just more fun to use. I know that is a subjective, but I find myself using the non-motorized treadmill all the time. I also noticed that when I got back on the motorized treadmill, it felt "funny." I also noticed that I was also able to walk faster on the motorized treadmill. So I think from my perspective that what you are saying (nonmotorized treadmill - definitely harder -is true), but subjectively, it is also more fun. Consequently, I want to work out more- so I guess there is some subjective perceived benefit to the non-motorized treadmill.
I really enjoyed your UA-cam video. Thank you for the information.

I really enjoyed this manual treadmill more than a regular one, it was exciting to sprint up to 10mph on them and feel my heartrate go up fast. It burns a lot of calories!

You say that manual curved treadmills are 30% harder to walk/run on vs. motorized, but you didn't say whether or not, in your opinion, curved treadmills more accurately replicate normal "real" walking outdoors.

TBH I think trying to replicate outdoor running with any treadmill will never be exactly the same, use what you have available if possible is always my best suggestion. If you want some extra gain of it being harder or self propelled which is more like running then manual yes will be more similar vs motorized!

So how would one do hill based workouts on this curved manual treadmill?
Most motorized treadmills max out at 15% incline with a few outliers going to 20%, 30% and even 40% grade.

Can you answer me a question? Do you feel that you could use an assault runner to walk.... And be able to fully concentrate on say a movie playing...... Or even to use the treadmill as a treadmill desk and do things on a laptop while walking very slowly?
I have heard people say that it's hard to concentrate on things while walking on a manual treadmill. In other words you have to pay some mental attention to your walking at all times. Is that true?

I watch TV and play on my phone while walking on my manual treadmill all the time. I think what people are referring to is the fact that if you want to maintain a certain pace while running, you have to focus more than with a motorized treadmill. I find that if I zone out while running, my speed tends to drop a little bit. But that’s not an issue with walking.

Hello! I just got one today. The Assault Runner at least, is totally adequate for walking! I even tried watching a youtube video while walking and it went great! You definitely need to be able to stay in rhythm first, which may require some practice as you need to more or less move your entire body at the right pace (great for training). Once you have the pace figured out, you can totally play a video while you walk. It's even better IMO because if you need to stop for a second to grab your phone or something, you just slow down with your feet, you don't need to worry about hitting a button first.

So let’s say for outdoor performance being the end goal wouldn’t it be better to do the non motorized one? This way when you run outside it will be easier? As long as you can hit your desired distance or speed goals?

If you don't like running on a motorized treadmill, you're REALLY going to hate running on a curved, manual treadmill, at twice the cost.
