Joyo American Sound compared to Paul Davids Matchless DC30

- After hearing Paul Davids Matchless DC30 tone I wondered if I could get close using a recently acquired Joyo American Sound Pedal. Though supposedly the DC30 is based on a Vox I think it is more fenderish in sound anyway. The Joyo pedal lives up to hype of others that have reviewed it and is great for silent home playing and recording.
I use it with my pedal board after my other overdrive pedals but before the delay and reverb, then go through an active DI and into the Steinberg UR44. No post processing used.

I like your American Sound pedal. Please make a refreshed version and add other amplifiers like deluxe reverb, vibroverb and bassman.
The American Sound/Tech 21 Blonde is still a very underrated jewel. I give BIG props to Tech 21 for a pedal design that nails the Fender sound without needing tubes, high voltage, a transformer or even a mic. I've owned the American Sound for over a year and it still impresses me. Cheers!
Great content. Very comparable although I believe it is not the main point of the video.
The matchless sounded better imo. But not by much
Yeah .I would hope so! In the room it would be a no contest for the amp
Dear Justin - this is a very interesting and rather excellent video. I think there are some differences, but neither tone is better or worse to me. I can, however, say that it is INSANE that you can get such a good tone from such an affordable piece of gear!
Agreed. So many factor including the pickups and playing style. I stuffed up the reverb trail also. But it was fun little experiment.
Not being able to afford a Matchless like David's I was searching for a pedal option AND I found your video!!!I live UA-cam and all the great guitare community!!Thanks so much for doing this video!!
Just ordered one😆😆!!!
Just got it yesterday!!and I love it ,it really does have that Matchless tone we hear in David's video,Thanks for doing the Joyo demo!!
I have an American Sound and it's great in context of what I paid for it. This is a great video. One can clearly hear the difference between the Joyo and the Matchless as the latter has that glassiness to the sound. And it should sound better given the price. The Joyo works for home recording. I find that most amp sim boxes never replicate the glassiness of a tube sound. Unless of course one buys a Kemper or something along those lines. I choose to pay my mortgage instead, so the Joyo will do for me. It's all in the hands in ears.
I have this joyo pedal. Its the only pedal I can afford so far. Buy it suits my playing very well.
Theres tons of affordable pedal options and youtube videos on the best ones. it's not how much you spend but how good you sound ; ) Best of luck!
Ha ha. I spent hours doing the same chasing Paul’a matchless using actually a digitech RP355 Matchless modelling profile. Yours are closer!
Nice! I love watching videos of this pedal.
I think all you need to add here is a touch of room reverb in your DAW to mimic the natural reflections of that matchless in the room, Paul may have even used an additional room mic that makes it sounds a little more “3D” and less DI. Great job, Cheers!
Thanks.. I did this pretty quick and soon as i uploaded i realised i stuffed up with the choice of reverb... Oh well. If i could play better like him also i think it would have been even closer. I was really surprised to come as close as i did
I keep asking myself if getting an hx stomp is worth it. Then I see videos like this, and my American sound, and ac tone are plenty enough.
Joyo sounds wonderful. Not as full bodied as the matchless but you cant really expect that. I'm a big fan of tonerider pickups also. That strat sounds so sweet
+1 for Toneriders
Loved this video, man! Incredible!
The Joyo AC tone would actually be a better pedal to get the Matchless tone as Matchless is based on a Vox AC 30 circuit. You did get pretty close though but there's something in missing in the mid frequencies and the low end is more flubby which is what a Fender amp does. I dig these joyo pedals. I keep the ac tone in my gigbag as my backup amp. Cool video
Yeah, understand that. Haven't played one of those, but am interested in getting it. When i heard that matchless tone I knew that was kind of the sound I already had when using the american sound. So I was amazed how close it sounds recorded considering we are comparing it to a real tube amp. It's just a bit of fun, nothing serious. All the best
YES me too forgot many things long the road ,But the Joyo American Sound can be dialled very soft n Jazzlike by just adjusting the HIGH n DRIVE, , its a wonderful pedal, for suhr, and for me Yam Pac 112Vs neck pups ..., i just tried it with: Simble, MI Cross, n Nobels odr-1, and thou its a preamp-type ped, its pretty Jazzy with those fore-mentioned peds I have, with solid state amps ... , I do have the TC El Mojo Mojo, and have ordered two Demon tube screamers, so Im not selling any thing but the expensive health that comes with the life, have to dash, yrs Kimmo : )
In a blind test, you just wouldn't be able to tell. I use the Joyo for all guitar parts on my backing tracks - have done since I started the channel. No need to spend more quite honestly! 🙌
There's no reason digital can't sound as good as a tube amp. This sound is very close. Your version sounds like there's a bit more solid bass. Matchless/Vox are similar to Fender tonally. The JoYo AS pedal sounds like it breaks up less gradually, which would be the case with 6l6 vs el84 tubes. The bass may also be from the difference in GNFB. I think the DC30 has none, while a Fender blackface amp has some.
I love Joyo American and British Sound pedals, I use it with BluGuitar Blubox cab sim pedal. Nice comparison video Justin!
Hey I just found this channel and I wanted to say I love the idea of chasing these tones on budget gear. I've been thinking of doing a similar video with my THR10 amp. Great video and really nice playing.
Thanks. If you do make your own video would be interested to hear. I was considering thr10 also.
Sick video!!!
Close enough...
Joyo Still on my board just before el capistan, tonal recall and ventris 😊.
I made a similar video to compare the American Sound to one of Blues Saraceno's demos of the Mojave Coyote. Amazingly close (aside from my playing...)
Yeah nice. I had a listen and apart from the fact they seemed to have chorus or Similar effect on it was pretty close. It's a great versatile pedal. I did another video here where I got it to sound like a raging Gibson Skylark
Nice comparison, and good playng too! Wasn't expecting it to be so close considering all the different gear.
What tonerider pickups are those ?
Can't recall but I have a video I did after I installed them where I probably have mentioned it
Hi Can you share settings please.
Yes, I showed them at around the 00:16 - 00:20 sec mark
Great stuff & amazing tone. Subbed!
Hi, simple question. why did you have to use DI box before your audio interface ? is there an advantage to that ? thanks.
you don't - this was a while ago, but pretty sure i had the DI just constantly plugged into my interface which was tucked into a neat spot on my desk, and i could just go straight into this rather than trying to access the rear panel which at the time was extremely difficult to get to.
@@Justin_-id3bt thanks
The Joyo is the greatest cheap pedal in the market, just add. an I.R. pedal like the Mooer Radar, Nux Mini Studio, Hotone Cab etc..., and you can leave the amp at home or instead of spending 450 Euro with the Strymon Iridium for example....
Yeah.. Would be interested to get an ir loader now and keep messing with it.
@@Justin_-id3bt Yes, the Joyo built in cab. is not bad at all but a dedicated i.r. pedal can really make the difference, you know that better than me.
The two cabs in that case are ok, they do not contrast with each other...
You need to mod the joyo American sound , put the on off cab switch , like the tech 21 ,
@@bernardsianipar4755 Thanks, I will have to look into how to do this, would be a handy feature
@@bernardsianipar4755 It's not worth, the cab. sim. in the Joyo is ok if used with another cab. sim. pedal, i was thinking of buying a different preamp without cab. but the Joyo sounds great so i'll keep it....
Anyone notice that one obvious similarity in the Joyo and Matchless? They are both are both analy anaylized by us geeks who listen to every minute detail a million times closer than any non guitar geek ever will 😂
I retract my question. Great job considering the price difference in your gear. 😁👍
Hi! Great tone! Which tone rider pickups do you use?
sounds amazing for the price.
I actually think the tone on the American Sound pedal is a little more to my liking (as a proud owner of a Mexi strat which is, for some reason, still stock)
This video convinced me to buy the joyo and an audio interface... I just love this tone.
Cool. Hope you get great results also. Do you have a nice strat?
I have a Cort G260. It isn't a Custom Shop Fender but It's a nice guitar imo. Now I only need your/Paul's skill too sound good...lol
@@ArA12459 am a long way off his skill level... But good luck
pretty close here....wow...
@1:04, you forgot the mandatory Paul Davids' vibrato shake! 😄
I suck at guitar so haven't earned the right!
SOLD
This pedal is amazing! Great job!
Just goes to show a good ear is better than an expensive gear. Kudos man!!
Joyo = $35.00 DC30 = $3500.00 ...So only a hundrew times more than the Joyo!
Well fuck then, everyone should buy a few DC30s, I didn't know they were so affordable
I recently got this pedal and paired it with my Hughes and Kettner Spirit of Vintage mini head and they work beautifully together. I use a reverb as well. Of course not as glassy as the real thing, but as beautiful an approximation as I can afford. Love this pedal.
Beautiful tone!👏👏👏
enlightening, buying a joyo to try
My dude. You are the man!
Is anyone else hearing the high pitched noise in the Joyo? This isn’t the first video I’ve heard it in.
I can't...but I also struggle to hear frequencies above 14-15k
Awesome demo! Did you use any Cab IR or speaker simulation?
Greetings from Mexico!
Hi.
No cab sims used.
can i know what active direct box do you used ? cab sim on there ? thank yoy
I have an old Behringer Ultra DI 100. No can Sim on there or is needed. It's only part of the signal path as it sits on my desktop connected to my interface to make it easier to plug line level signals in when needed.
Nice tone! What’s your american sound setting?
Thanks. Check @ 0:18...
👍👍👍👍👍
Lovely tone! It's pretty close with Paul and awesome playing too. I also have the American Sound and just recently uploaded a video. It's a mainstay of my main pedalboard.
Nice but you should have shown the pedal settings. What voice, eq, drive settings did you use? Awesome playing btw!!
I did.. Check at 0:18 secs
@@Justin_-id3bt oh, thanks man! Silly me.
Wicked video!!
Why didn’t you use the Joyo AC Tone pedal rather than the Fender in a Box American Sound?
Cos I don't have one of those...When I hear a nice tone I like, I just try replicate it with the gear I have...and I don't have much
@@Justin_-id3bt That’s what I assumed, but it seemed like you were setting out to get a Vox-style sound out of a Fendery pedal, which brought up the question “Why not use the correct pedal?” I’m so used to guys who get sent pedals for free. I have the American Sound. I used it to make my Blues Junior sound nicer, so I thought I’d better sell the amp. I got a Princeton and the preamp trick with the pedal doesn’t work. But you can do most things with that Strat and that pedal. I’ve been playing for 44 years and Im sick of wasting money on expensive gear. All of my pedals are clones. I found a guy who hand builds clones of expensive pedals. I sold my expensive effects, and I sold everything which I don’t really need. You probably don’t need more gear than you have. You should look online for the chart of Chinese clone pedals. It tells you what they’re clones of. The Chinese make everything now.
Great video. I have two questions. Is there a way to bypass the cab simulation in this pedal (I assume it has some right? I didn't see anything else in the chain)?
Second question, why the DI box? Would plugging in directly into the interface produce similar results?
Thanks a bunch for creating this video.
Hi.. No you cant bypass the cab sim. Apparently there is a mod you can do though.
Yeah DI box not necessary. I think at the time i just always had it setup on my desk and it was difficult to get to the line inputs on the rear of my card. I have tidied up and it now runs into the line in.
@@Justin_-id3bt Thanks so much for the follow-up. I was contemplating investing in an amp sim but I already have some of them, and I like the tactile feeling of interacting with a physical piece of gear. Plus, I don't like to overload myself with options, so getting this Jojo pedal might work better for me.
One last question. How hot do you record in this configuration? Normally, I aim for roughly -12db to -18db average (or 0VU) and then gain stage plugins to maintain that. I assume going through a pedal would work in a similar fashion?
