Rhett Shull Skylark Inspired Tone using JOYO American Sound
Another fun little exercise of tone matching using the Joyo American Sound, while not a complete match...obviously...it gets in the ballpark and is a lot of fun to play with.

Joyo American Sound compared to Paul Davids Matchless DC30
Переглядів 50 тис.4 роки тому
After hearing Paul Davids Matchless DC30 tone I wondered if I could get close using a recently acquired Joyo American Sound Pedal. Though supposedly the DC30 is based on a Vox I think it is more fenderish in sound anyway. The Joyo pedal lives up to hype of others that have reviewed it and is great for silent home playing and recording. I use it with my pedal board after my other overdrive pedal...

I like these community jam tracks as a way to slowly improve improvisational skills. Upload them to get over my insecurities of not being a great player, but wanting to improve. Track is in G mixolydian I believe but I played G dorian over it a lot (threw in as many Bb's as I could as i like the tension and actually thinks its suits the song better than playing diatonic. Spent 20 mins or so this morning approximating the tone from Rhett Shulls video 'HX Stomp vs. VINTAGE Marshall | Can You Hear The Difference?' as a fun little exercise. I copied the riff @8:50 mark for comparison. I think I got closer to the Helix Stomp version than the original Marshall JMP. Let us know if you think the tone is close? Or tonally what is lacking that I could possibly tweak? Gea...

Tonerider Pure Vintage Demo Review
Переглядів 21 тис.5 років тому
After picking up my 2005 MIM deluxe player strat for the first time in a few years, the middle pickup had gone dead. It was a broken winding. Since I never was fond of them I began searching for a decent set of replacement pickups. Came across these relatively inexpensive sets ($145 AUD) from Tonerider and online reviews all seemed positive, and from the few youtube clips, they sounded like the...
dude this idea with your ear is BONKERS. budget tone hunting is so fun!
His video compares Joyo and Matchless DC-30. Excellent. I found this video helpful. ua-cam.com/video/s04Iru0prbc/v-deo.htmlsi=iL3Wk7kbEqJ6GksX
Sick video!!!
Hi, simple question. why did you have to use DI box before your audio interface ? is there an advantage to that ? thanks.
you don't - this was a while ago, but pretty sure i had the DI just constantly plugged into my interface which was tucked into a neat spot on my desk, and i could just go straight into this rather than trying to access the rear panel which at the time was extremely difficult to get to.
@@Justin_-id3bt thanks
In a blind test, you just wouldn't be able to tell. I use the Joyo for all guitar parts on my backing tracks - have done since I started the channel. No need to spend more quite honestly! 🙌
Close enough...
What tonerider pickups are those ?
Can't recall but I have a video I did after I installed them where I probably have mentioned it
didn't expect bro to pull up paranoid android on a vintage pickups review lol
There's no reason digital can't sound as good as a tube amp. This sound is very close. Your version sounds like there's a bit more solid bass. Matchless/Vox are similar to Fender tonally. The JoYo AS pedal sounds like it breaks up less gradually, which would be the case with 6l6 vs el84 tubes. The bass may also be from the difference in GNFB. I think the DC30 has none, while a Fender blackface amp has some.
The matchless sounded better imo. But not by much
Yeah .I would hope so! In the room it would be a no contest for the amp
@1:04, you forgot the mandatory Paul Davids' vibrato shake! 😄
I suck at guitar so haven't earned the right!
SOLD
Anyone notice that one obvious similarity in the Joyo and Matchless? They are both are both analy anaylized by us geeks who listen to every minute detail a million times closer than any non guitar geek ever will 😂
Are you using any cab simulators?
No. The joyo does the cab simulation
Just fitter my Tonerider Vintage Pure Vintage after reading all reviews , they sound fabulous on my Strat 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 5 star
pretty close here....wow...
Joyo = $35.00 DC30 = $3500.00 ...So only a hundrew times more than the Joyo!
Well fuck then, everyone should buy a few DC30s, I didn't know they were so affordable
Is anyone else hearing the high pitched noise in the Joyo? This isn’t the first video I’ve heard it in.
I can't...but I also struggle to hear frequencies above 14-15k
Hi Can you share settings please.
Yes, I showed them at around the 00:16 - 00:20 sec mark
This pedal is amazing! Great job!
I think if the American sound get plugged into a Peavey Bandit and miked the same you would get an awesome tone for a tiny budget. There is something missing without a speaker moving air. But as it is it’s pretty good and would be very similar in the mix. Listen to this one, recorder with an Iphone in 2013 into a cheap crate amp. ua-cam.com/video/07ho45_yq0s/v-deo.html
can i know what active direct box do you used ? cab sim on there ? thank yoy
I have an old Behringer Ultra DI 100. No can Sim on there or is needed. It's only part of the signal path as it sits on my desktop connected to my interface to make it easier to plug line level signals in when needed.
Plugged to DI or mic'd cab?
Joyo American sound pedal and reverb pedal direct into interface
@@Justin_-id3bt sounds amazing
@@erniethenerd8495 actually i lied...I just watched back and I was being totally lazy by recording straight into my phone. The signal path was still the same but I put the phone headset mic inside my closed studio headphones and recorded direct to my phone. you can see the smaller cable danging in front of me...very dodgy...haha
sounds amazing for the price.
500k.... try 250 for get less bright sound...
I noted the 500k pot cause it was already in the guitar (because of the original 'noiseless' pickups) never had too much issue so i never ended up changing it...
Hi! Great tone! Which tone rider pickups do you use?
Might not be the same but it's soooo en-joy-able
I made a similar video to compare the American Sound to one of Blues Saraceno's demos of the Mojave Coyote. Amazingly close (aside from my playing...)
Yeah nice. I had a listen and apart from the fact they seemed to have chorus or Similar effect on it was pretty close. It's a great versatile pedal. I did another video here where I got it to sound like a raging Gibson Skylark
I recently got this pedal and paired it with my Hughes and Kettner Spirit of Vintage mini head and they work beautifully together. I use a reverb as well. Of course not as glassy as the real thing, but as beautiful an approximation as I can afford. Love this pedal.
hey bro great vid ! any chance you'd have tabs of it ?? cheers
Nah sorry....just did it by ear and didn't put much time into it.
I retract my question. Great job considering the price difference in your gear. 😁👍
Why didn’t you use the Joyo AC Tone pedal rather than the Fender in a Box American Sound?
Cos I don't have one of those...When I hear a nice tone I like, I just try replicate it with the gear I have...and I don't have much
@@Justin_-id3bt That’s what I assumed, but it seemed like you were setting out to get a Vox-style sound out of a Fendery pedal, which brought up the question “Why not use the correct pedal?” I’m so used to guys who get sent pedals for free. I have the American Sound. I used it to make my Blues Junior sound nicer, so I thought I’d better sell the amp. I got a Princeton and the preamp trick with the pedal doesn’t work. But you can do most things with that Strat and that pedal. I’ve been playing for 44 years and Im sick of wasting money on expensive gear. All of my pedals are clones. I found a guy who hand builds clones of expensive pedals. I sold my expensive effects, and I sold everything which I don’t really need. You probably don’t need more gear than you have. You should look online for the chart of Chinese clone pedals. It tells you what they’re clones of. The Chinese make everything now.
I have an American Sound and it's great in context of what I paid for it. This is a great video. One can clearly hear the difference between the Joyo and the Matchless as the latter has that glassiness to the sound. And it should sound better given the price. The Joyo works for home recording. I find that most amp sim boxes never replicate the glassiness of a tube sound. Unless of course one buys a Kemper or something along those lines. I choose to pay my mortgage instead, so the Joyo will do for me. It's all in the hands in ears.
Beautiful tone!👏👏👏
Joyo sounds wonderful. Not as full bodied as the matchless but you cant really expect that. I'm a big fan of tonerider pickups also. That strat sounds so sweet
+1 for Toneriders
Just goes to show a good ear is better than an expensive gear. Kudos man!!
Nice comparison, and good playng too! Wasn't expecting it to be so close considering all the different gear.
Tune that guitar my friend B string. Maybe the guitar tuner say its good but also use your ears.
Great content. Very comparable although I believe it is not the main point of the video.
Loved this video, man! Incredible!
My dude. You are the man!
👍👍👍👍👍
I love when people mention a “woody sound” from a Strat. They even claim to hear the wood in the neck and the body! It’s comical! Since the strings on a Strat don’t actually touch the body I’m a bit perplexed by these claims!
le son d une guitare vient principallement du manche de celui ci !!!

I actually think the tone on the American Sound pedal is a little more to my liking (as a proud owner of a Mexi strat which is, for some reason, still stock)
Joyo Still on my board just before el capistan, tonal recall and ventris 😊.
Great tone, Tonerider doesn't disappoint. I'll be reinstalling my City Limits set this weekend
enlightening, buying a joyo to try
Differences with the surfari set?
No idea sorry. Only tried these ones and it been a while since i was researching it. I am happy with these still though and can get beeter tones now then when i did this. Good luck
Surfari are More dark and little sweet sound great for blues sound very close to 50 strat : best PU Strat hotty
Surfaris are instant Hank Marvin tones !
While yours still sounds good, it’s not the same. Seems a little thicker and fuzzier. Maybe back off on the compressor and get a little more highs in front of the Joyo
Thanks.. Might give it a try. I was never expecting it to be the same. I shared this cos i thought it was pretty cool to get in the ballpark with this pedal not really made for these tones. Have a good day
Awesome demo! Did you use any Cab IR or speaker simulation? Greetings from Mexico!
Hi. No cab sims used.
