Love the channeling move on the tape under the reel seat. Gunna have to adopt that. The only thing I do different is I epoxy the rod when it’s on the dryer. Didn’t seem to hinder anything you did though. Thanks for putting this together!
@@WARBAITS definitely try it in the dryer. No need for tape or anything to get a clean line tight to the wrap. You keep your hand still and let the rod spin under the brush.
It's easier when you use a wrapping machine. But when your building a rod while manually turning your work just takes experience and learning little tricks that work for you. Your rod looks great. My Dad and I got into building rods in the early 70's. He had connections with poeple in the business so we could by materials at cost. But now the cost of materials to build a rod can add up quickly so I look at it that it's part of my fishing hobbie and it's satisfying to build your own rod and then put it thru it's paces and "land that giant".
Been wanting to build my own for a while now.......this is the motivation I needed. I want a rod that is my custom job.....that you cant buy from the store
I’ve always found it easier to just apply the finish on the guides while the Rod is on the dryer and for most freshwater applications I’ve found that only one medium coat is needed. But great video afran, custom rods and building them have always have an extra cool factor to them.
Same here. When applying the finish having the rod mounted in the dryer motor eliminates the lateral movement imparted on the blank when turned by hand. The motor rotation of the blank also allows me to steady my hand on a rest to create even finishes.
I’ve never thought of the tape technique on the finish rod, makes so much sense, after the 10+ that I’ve built, I still can’t get straight lines, I’m 100% going to try that technique. I second Nick, I use flex coat as well. I do 2 coats as well too
i do several coats, depends on how the epoxy ends up setting, I usually do 1-2 on the under wraps. and then i do 2 layers of overwraps, on the first overwrap i do 1 coat and on the second wrap I do anywhere from 2-4 coats. I do 1 coat then I take a little razer blade to cut out the little bums then do another coat and so on if it needs it. But these are saltwater rods so that's why i do more coats.
What timing! I've been looking into making my own rods lately, gonna start with repairing guides on one of my current rods and if that doesn't totally suck I'm gonna build my own rod.
I’ve been buying into the new trend of two piece rods where the rod attachment is on the butt/reel seat…. What are your thoughts on those two piece jigging rods vice one piece rods? It feels like a one piece rod with the integrity of a one piece rod, while also benefitting of breaking them apart to easily store them in my drunk/car or travel…
I personally never liked resin at top grip. Need to feel blank in my fingers, I like those skeleton Fuji too cause you can feel rod under reel seat. Carbon fiber super sensitive and that’s the benefit, I think companies royally ef up adding resins in those specific areas. Anyway rad rods and I like the minimalist approach and less resin the better. Did the guide placement work. Knowing that all rods bend or actions are different did you feel that matching up guides that way worked?
Fresh content man. Love it. Your annoying (jk) ;). I just started making rods and thought to myself "it'd be sick to make Afran a rod". Here you are killing the wrapping game. Youre the OG man.
Yes, the first thing I do with any blank is locate and mark the back bone. Then glue in the reel seat. I have seen others find the back bone after glue, but don’t like that order of production. Are you building a rod?
Dang I really thought the whole rod would cost like $100 with everything, for that $340 price I would just go buy a phenix rod and a nice reel for that much 😂😂 (no hate I just didn’t expect it to be that pricy)
This was super sick to watch. Makes me wanna start making my own bass rods
Thanks!
Answered so many questions I haven't found anywhere else. Absolute bloody legend.
Thanks! Good luck with your build!
Another great video! Keep doing what you're doing Afran!
Thank you
Also Go to Bloody Decks if you live in San Diego or near. They offer free classes at some people’s houses who are true master of their crafts

I’ll give running the finish guide coat on the dryer next rod👍 Thanks!

Nice work brotha!! The rod is beyond gangster. And I bet it feels better to fish with it because you built it yourself. Again… NICE WORK!!!
Thank you!
Super stoked on this video Afran! For the longest time I’ve wanted to build my own rod. Thanks to this video I actually might start!
You got to do it!
Looks dope. Great logic breakdown as well. Plus it's made with love. That's priceless.

Good luck with it! It’s really fun and satisfying
@WARBAITS Fishing I also love using bobins, like the control over traditional spool tensioners
Very well said. Controlled
Nice work! Would love to see a more in depth of the benefits of using a heavy rod for swimjigs and bay bass fishing.
I like a heavy action rod for single hook baits like the Warbaits. Bay Bass have hard mouths, so I like a stiff rod for driving the hook 🚀
Really enjoyed the whole process, never knew what went into rod building
🙏

Noted on applying guide finish on the dryer. That makes a lot of sense. I’ll give flex cost a try it’s been years since I’ve used it. Thanks guys!
That rod came out great! Giving me more ideas to spend my money on lol. 🤙
Another project!
Sick afran!
Thanks Bryan!
Nice work !!!
Enjoyed that brother, very nice work!!🤙🤙

I’ll give the flex coat a try. I haven’t used that in a couple years

It all starts, one guide at a time. It gets easier. Good luck!
Looks rad. Nice tips as well
Well done video, you’re good at these tutorial videos! Always learning from warbaits 🔥
Nice rod🤙
Do you ever make custom wrapped rods for customers? That’s a lot of work but it’s also nice it is made how want it.
Warbaits is working on a limited series for this year👍
Very nice work. I have always wanted to do this, but at the same time, it might be easier to just go buy a phenix m1...love those rods. LOL
It’s 💯 easier buying a rod. I started buying nice rods a couple years back, but I always modify them! Custom rod building is a fun hobby
What guides do you recommend for a MH bay bass build? TY and the Rod turned out great
We use Fuji guides. Aconite. If you need, Mudhole.com makes guide kits
@@WARBAITS TY
Mud Hole Custom Tackle has a long variety of videos also showing how to build rods. They get down on details on certain parts of rod building.
💯

I love the idea of a two piece breaking down at the handle. What rod brand is this?

@Warbaits Did you find the back bone before gluing your real seat?

Dude that’s sick! What rod motor are you using?
It’s the standard Mud Hole CRB drying motor 👍
@@WARBAITS 10-4, thanks!
@@WARBAITS 10-4, thanks!
Nice ride you've built can you build me one for Calico Bass let me know what it cost like your videos keep it going
Thanks!
What’s brand is the blank brother? Sick rod btw I always wanted to do this
It’s a Phenix 👍
Impressive!
Try flex coat has a faster drying speed
Thanks!
😍
Next time use fiberglass dry wall tape & 20 min rod builders epoxy for your reel seat bushings.....you need to mix your epoxy finish longer ( milky )
Thanks for the info/advise and messages!
Maybe need 1 day to build this rod, it nice. But I think going to buy maybe cheaper.
Imagine... warbaits fishing rods made for fishing warbaits lures.
💯
can I just pay you to build a rod for me? lol.

Yeah that’s what he said in the video. The point of a custom rod is that it’s custom, it’ll always be more expensive than a manufactured rod
Definitely something to consider
