This is My Captain Marvel. The fact that we get Colan, Kane & Boring with Jim Starlin's Cosmic Cube saga in one volume makes this a must buy. The original series premiered when I was 10 years old & I loved it, but when the red& blue costume with the Nega-bands era arrived, I became an even bigger fan. Wayne Boring, a Superman artist, working for Marvel was highly touted by the editors back in the day. Starlin was so radical I couldn't believe it.
Much respect to the OG Captain Marvel, but I am anxiously awaiting Genis-Vell Captain Marvel Omnibus. Also hopefully Carol Danvers Ms. Marvel by Brian Reed Omnibus.
Got this waiting for me to open when I get home from work!! Fingers crossed for a Vol 2 announcement soon 🤞🤞

I have soooooo been waiting for this Omnibus. I’ll be purchasing the DM volume muhself. That issue of Marvel Super Heroes was one of the first comic books I ever read as a child. Special significance? Yeah.
it's really a shame that they stop the Omnibus one issue before the end of the Starlin run, the very important issue #34! Looking forward to a volume 2 with the Broderick run!
If you look at the Marvel Masterworks collections of Captain Marvel you’ll see that’s where vol 3 ended. Volumes 4-6 of the Masterworks should fit into a volume 2?
Issue 34 is more significant to subsequent issues than to the Thanos story, so I would condone saving it for another volume, despite that it was Starlin's last, and thus artistically would seem incongruous among the Milgrom issues.

It’s great to see this run finally collected in Omnibus format. I hope they release a second volume that finishes up Mar-Vell’s complete run!
Mar-vell ended with issue 16.
I bought Captain Marvel's first appearance in MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #12. It was a big deal at the time and the house ads really touted it. I don't remember staying with it beyond the Gene Colan issues, but definitely hopped back on board with the Gil Kane issues, which remain my favorites. Tom Sutton is hugely under-rated, though, and his issue is a stand out.
Did not expected that even early Jim Starlin's art so freaking good. Omar, I am still waiting you interviewing this legend.

It’s rather confusing Marvel has decided to call this the Captain Mar-Vell Omnibus, when the original comic was entitled Captain *Marvel* and that’s the title on the book cover. It wasn’t until I watched your review and saw the title on the spine that I was able to find a copy online.
I was a kid in the 70's, and my friends and I couldn't afford back issues like amazing spider-man 1 or hulk 1, but we could afford captain marvel 1 😂

My 1st encounter with Mar-vell would be his run in 2nd Marvel Spotlight series. As a kid I was fascinated by the cosmic aspect of the character, the way he could fly through space with that energy trail. The weird villians and such. I think that sparked a life-long love of Marvel Cosmic up through Annihilation. I'd like to mentioned Marvel Spotlight #8 notably drawn by Frank Miller. The story has such a melancholy vibe with cool sci-fi concepts, and Frank's art is fantastic. It would have been nice to have a series of stories like that with Mar-Vell with Miller's art. But this probably the last story before they killed him off. I re-read that one a lot as a kid.

Grendon, good thinking, but with Epics going for $49.99 now it's worth investing in the oversized and hardbound omnibi, especially of you can wait out the initial clamor and catch the book on a price cut. I was shocked to see Captain Marvel is actually getting a Mighty Marvel Masterworks! That's a very affordable way to start on the series.
I wish they would print this in epic collection format already
I loved The Death of Captain Marvel, it's a really amazing story. I'm a fan of the Ms. Marvel run by Brian Reed, I hope it gets an omnibus too. I never read this run on Captain Mar-Vell, I hope to do it soon because I love this character.
Did you ever read the more recent retcon which propounded that he was a Skrull who had so successfully infiltrated the Kree that even he didn't realise who he was?

I have all these issues reprinted in Marvel Masterworks so I won’t be getting this but if you don’t have the Masterworks I thoroughly recommend this. Captain Marvel was one of my favourite Marvel comics. So sad that he was killed off- albeit in a great graphic novel. Totally cosmic!!!!

It is Feb 1st since Marvel books cannot be sold on Tuesdays. Until they get a new distributor for their books, it is always Wednesdays.
This should have included MARVEL FEATURE # 12, by Friedrich & Starlin + Sinnott, the return of the Blood Brothers with Thanos on the sidelines. If it ever gets reprinted, I hope they'll fix that.

There's some gorgeous art in there. The death of Una in Captain Marvel #40 is an overlooked classic that shook me as hard as ASM #121. Heart wrenching!
I think they could have run with the Captain Marvel title on the spine and subtitled it to reference Mar-Vell, much like they did with Ms Marvel’s first omni. With a tighter budget this year I’ll pass on this book though. Very thorough overview Omar!
Robert, I agree that it was a bad idea to title it Mar-Vell on the spine when the book's title is Marvel. This will be a tough year to be on a tight budget as it appears the floodgates at DC are about to burst open. Watch In-Stock Trades in a few months for a price drop and free shipping. I snapped up my initially passed-over What If omnibi there when the demand died down and prices plummeted.
The Kree vs Skrull is something I was familiar with, but Thanos? Wild…
It makes sense though with Jim Starin at the helm.

the Infinity Man/Forever People and Captain Marvel/Rick Jones connection isn't something I put together or thought about until now.
I know what you mean with the texture on some of the pages I had it in my Moon Knight and Venom Omnibus
Great overview, Omar, but whoa, way too much dancing hands throughout. I know some people talk with their hands, but.... ! :-) I also thought it was a mercenary trick to end the omnibus one issue shy of Starlin's complete run. Marvel knows that's the hook to get fans to buy volume 2 (they did the same with Kirby's FF run, holding a few issues back for volume 4). But I would buy it anyway since I had a few of the later issues and enjoyed the series a lot. The early Colan issues look like a complement to Silver Surfer and are like proto-Bronze Age books in story and scope. PS: Lee and Ditko gave Dr. Strange a long story arc spanning Strange Tales 130-46, and visually it appears Starlin may have been influenced by that iconic run.

Almost August 2024, and still no vol 2 or even an announcement of one coming. With the large volume of omnibuses Marvel has been printing/reprinting of late, it seems they’ve forgotten about poor Mar-Vell.
I ordered the DM edition as it featured the CM I know, and mine arrived last Sat.
Like the overview as normal as it helps me prepare to read it. The books features some great artist, who style was unique and can never be matched.
I hope we get a vol 2 that would conclude with his death, and end yo the series
Thank you for this review as it was helpful but maybe the opposite of the intent: I've been looking forward to this as I loved Jim Starlin's Captain Marvel. But watching this I'm like, whoa hold on, this is not what I'm remembering....

I always forget about the new spine. Then I see it and it makes me laugh. Doubling down on a mistake is not the right answer.

Just noticed that Nintendo ripped off your music riff in Mario Strikers: Battle League
The notion that Starlin was inspired on this comic by Kirby's Fourth World material is actually quite spurious, and based upon subsequent retcons which chose to subtly alter his genealogy of Thanos provided in the Metamorphosis story, replacing the original Greek gods with Kirby's Eternals from two years later, an interestant idea, but one far from being satisfactorily resolved by the present Eternals writer, Kieron Gillen.
John, you know your stuff. I remember even in the '80s, however, fans were calling Thanos Marvel's answer to Darkseid, perhaps based more on appearance and evil natures than origin. I quit reading new comics in the mid/late '80s, so wasn't aware of the retcons you brought to light or of the Eternals connection. Thanks--you've piqued my interest!
@@g.p.ryecroft See recent limited series, particularly by Gillen and the excellent Esad Ribic. It's good to know that fans of this old material eventually got to finish the Starlin's Thanos story, even if they had to wait 17 years for it to appear as tpb! This was due to the desperate state of Marvel's distribution; issues 31-33 were scarcely distributed, even, I believe (?), in the U.S.
Hi Omar. I know you love Annihilation but outside of that, what would you say was the best era of Marvel cosmic?
Do you think they'll include the D[Spoiler] of Captain Marvel in volume 2? I don't know what issues that happens in, or if it's in the series itself, but I passed up on the gallery edition, just because I tend to find those too big to put anywhere...but I'd hope they end up collecting it in an OHC omni or the like.👍

The D[Spoiler] of Captain Marvel was the very first Marvel Graphic Novel and acme out in 1982. I remember being a high school kid with a very limited budget. At $5.95 that graphic novel was equivalent to ten comics, so I never bought it and never read it! I hope and suspect it will be in the second omnibus (writing with hopeful confidence there will be one--and soon!).
@@g.p.ryecroft Same, definitely hope it'll be announced and out soon. I'm thinking of collecting as much cosmic Marvel from this period as I can, with Nova's omni coming soon and all, then maybe Infinity Gauntlet, followed by Annihilation...eventually.
I feel that though, about the price point.
Gosh I wish comics were that cheap now, I'd actually be keeping up with them if so. 😅 But I'm one of those younger joiners, DC Rebirth era style...so all I know is 'oh gosh which *one* do I choose?'

Hey, near mint condition. When you got your Justice league, the 52 volume 1 origin. How were you able to read it? Because for me it's difficult because I have it as a paperback. So I have to turn my neck a little to be able to read the texts.

Kaden, I know what you mean. My Ant-Man Epic vol 2 arrived today and is super-tightly bound, closes up like a clam. I open it to the middle and lightly press down, turning handfuls of pages and carefully pressing down to loosen it up without breaking the binding. This Ant-Man Epic also has art deep into the fold, so I'm having to pull the book open more than I like just to read the balloons. That's my solution, and it works well for me and I hope for you too!.

If the paper is thin enough to show the print on the reverse side of the pages, this ephemera, on this title only sporadically cherishable under Jim Starlin, is unworthy of purchase. Literal evidence perhaps, of how we could see what to expect in the plots of Arnold Drake, a former DC writer whose career, if continued under the same name, ended after these few stories. Another reason will be the lack of direction which Omar references from early issues, and the chronic underinvestment in quality art until the arrival of Gil Kane, followed only by the undistinguished resumption from Marv Wolfman and the aptly named Wayne Boring. The most Significant story is obviously the Thanos War, which is the first featuring this remarkably endurant tyrant who quite literally surpasses Mar-Vell as the character who would not die, since Marvel killed the latter off a few years after the title's final cancellation, now proof of The Rolling Stone's assessment of Jim Morrison: hot, sexy and dead, while Starlin, past grievances forgiven, featured the mauve genocide in various titles several times in the nineties: first, Silver Surfer, then in various Infinity-themed mini-series, some drawn by (the apparently Pat Broderick-inspired) Ron Lim.
There is enough material for another volume, but when we consider that Marvel's greatly respected writer Steve Englehart worked on these stories only with Al Milgrom, who, despite however well he worked as Starlin's inker, was no penciller, and thereafter, Pat Broderick, who scarcely represented an improvement, this material would be very much for die-hard fans only.

@@davidgraham8299 The Starlin issues certainly were. I was so obsessed with them the kids round my way called me 'Captain Marvel'.
John, a tour-de-force torpedoing of volume 2 even before volume 1 is in the hands of fans! I loved the Jim Morrison reference and "the aptly named Wayne Boring" line. While I do believe the Lizard King died in France about the time these very issues were on the stands, I do enjoy Boring's art. But I love Frank Springer too (Nick Fury, Dazzler). It was Milgrom's art on the later issues that I first saw and enjoyed. I did not know Pat Broderick worked on this title. My first encounter with him was on DC's Firestorm. Drake an "obscure writer"? Besides Doom Patrol Drake also co-created Deadman and the Guardians of the Galaxy, so like Tom Sutton, an under-appreciated talent. I guess I'm in the legion of "die-hard fans" who will preorder volume 2 the day it's available.

@@johnmorell7020 Silver and gold I have none, but I am rich in other ways (faith, family and friends). And I do splurge on omnibi and epics! I did have to pass on Warlock for lack of funds. Someday if it stays in print and I can gather the shekels. Thanks for the response, John. I like your style.
too many omnis cant keep up
I know, right? I saw Omar's short video saying DC was ramping up to release a bunch of stuff and I thought, oh yeah, but oh noooo! It's almost too much of a good thing, our cup runnething over. It wouldn't be so bad if I knew the books would still be available in a few months/a year, but so many omnibi and epics sell out quickly and stay out-of-print for years. We have to grab 'em when that window is open or miss out.

I was hoping they would never do anything with him ever, just end it with 16 and never bring it back.
