Invictus reviewed by Mark Kermode

- Stand out performances from Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon convince Mark to believe Invictus, the story of post apartheid rugby in South Africa, to be a sports movie of real quality
Great Film! Great Sport! Great review! I was surprised Kermode didn't talk about Eastwood.
The film maybe long & unfocused in parts, however the film’s realistic, well acted, well directed & A realistic biopic. (77%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
Matt Damon is one of the best actors in the business today and this performance supports this
"Murderball" and "Forever Strong" come to mind pretty much immediately. Can't think of anything past that.
RIP Mandela
Surely the difficulty doing Mandela's accent is that no one else sounds anything like Mandela.
Harry Enfield manages it.
@@TheKamikazenaz but Harry Enfield doesn't sound like that normally. Lots of people can do an impression of Nelson Mandela, but, based on what I have heard from South African people, I don't think there are many people who sound like him if they aren't doing an impression.
I could be wrong. Perhaps there are parts of South Africa where everyone sounds like Nelson Mandela but, so far as I know, he had a very unusual and distinctive voice, which is good if you're an impressionist like Harry Enfield, but a bit more difficult if you're trying to do a dramatic performance like Morgan Freeman.
@@davimurph "Harry Enfield doesn't sound like that normally"? You do know we're talking about acting, don't you?
@@TheKamikazenaz you have fundamentally misunderstood my point.
I'm surprised. He didn't even mention that it was directed by Clint Eastwood!
But anyway, thanks Mark. Now I have a few more reasons to see it.
Great rugby movies: This Sporting Life. I'm surprised Kermode missed this one.
It sounds bad but Damon's accent is better thsn Freeman's. Just sounds like Freeman. But he is good.
I love the pairing of Mayo and Kermode.
Only thing the movie could have done better was talk more about the Lomu factor, he was so devastating in that World Cup. It was like the other team had Godzilla on the wing, and it is not as if the other All Blacks were chancers either.
Think i'll go see it...can't think of any other rugby films though! I don't think Freeman's accent is really close to mandela's though, IMHO
There are other rugby movies?
@Haeronthegreat Because kermode goes onto tv later that day.
@Ganjamule Well Said
What an explanation.
This Sporting Life?
Excellent film.
A few things niggled me during this film. Morgan's wavering accent. Matt Damon's lack of height compared to his team mates (ie he's 5'10 when the real player is 6'3). The, at times, incomprehensible accents from a few of the actors. Why did they not go for softer accent like in District 9? The film is only worth 5/10.
thanks again mayo, for continually interrupting kermode's reviews, but now spoiling the movie for me!
The bit with the black kid listening to the game with tbe white police officers should be trite and superficial but Eastwood made it meaningful .
Didn't really like this film, appreciate the historical aspect and story and the performances are good but its very average compared to eastwoods other films (iwo jima, gran torino and million dollar)
@GoinDownToJunkieTown Actually there is a version of the poster where Matt Damon is holding the trophy, and Mayo said the poster had the trophy in it, not that Mandella was holding it out. Why do you hate him so much? Sometimes he may interrupt Kermode mid flow, but on the whole he knows when to let him rip, when to wind him up, when to stop him from going too far and when to force him to explain things to the listeners. Why would they get rid of Mayo? He's a successful and popular radio DJ.
Not a fan of Freeman's accent, still sounds American.
That's not a proper use of "preternaturally"
Out of interest, how would you use preternaturally?
