I ran into Elena at a music festival a few years ago and asked for a picture together. She offered to take the photo for us and was giggling the same exact way you see in this video. Then I told her "You don't act like your music," and she went "Oh, um. Depressed...!" making a teardrops-down-my-face gesture with her fingers. I died.

I've never heard them before this, so this is my first time being exposed to them. She gives me the first impression that she has had a rough past, as many have. Being awkward and probably different from everyone she's known, never knowing where she fit. But then she found that she loses herself in her music - as you said, I get the sense that she is still that same awkward girl, never really fitting in, but that now she is ok with it, and has, in a sense, found that her "place" is not having a place. When i went to watch them live at Pukkelpop (Belgian Festival) a couple of years ago, they arrived 45 minutes late. Nearly half the people had already left the tent when they finally showed up. Apparently their instruments were lost on the plain to Belgium. They eventually managed to borrow some guitars from a helpful band also attending the festival, and had to improvise on the drums or something iirc. The performance was a magical and pure moment, in the middle of the heat & busyness of an 80.000 people festival. When they played Youth, which was their only well-known song at the time, Elena started to lose her voice a bit, overwhelmed by emotion, while the small crowd completely took over for her. One of the best live experiences in my life.

SpookyApparition I've never played or had the knack for percussion, strictly speaking as a guitarist, but what he does, to me, is just awesome. I would have never thought to come up with that pattern and the way it just flows subtly with the guitar is perfect composition to this song.
I cried, I can really see her sadness when she sings. The soon she sings, it's like she immediately pulls back into her memories. Of the times she was hurt, she was alone and sad. The way she looks when she says "i hate you" in landfill, and the look in her eyes around 5:00... i got very emotional. Also they are such incredibly shy people and I love that they did this performance I feel like it may took some courage of her. I saw them live and they were incredibly cute to see. Elena was so shy she couldn't look the public in the eye during the concert at all. She and (I suspect boyfriend) Igor kept making eye contact during the show and smiled cutesy to each other. It was endearing to see.
First heard daughter in 2012, I saw them live in 2013... I also happened to meet her after the show. She is one of the sweetest and humble artists I have met
these probably are the kind of Artists who record in a Close studio with the entire band Playing together, with no separate takes..in today's age of Technology and Luxury❤️
from landfill: "throw me in the water, don't think about the splash i will create." the way she sings it, even if that small fraction of time towards the end of the line, really sent me somewhere else and back. sublime.
8:30 Guy (in the audience?): "That looks like a completely awkward space to play in" Elene: "*giggles* No, it's fine; we're just completely awkward people."
The only way this could be better would be an encore of Smother! 'we are the reckless, we are the wild youth' is one of my favourite lyrics ever. The whole sentiment of the current struggles for first time buyers vs the generation with second homes; the brexit division which is often discussed as a generational divide; the unwavering obliteration of public and welfare services. Elena's (and mine) generation will be the first generation in history to be worse off than their parents; yet our generation is cast as work-shy, get told exams are easier, with tuition fees that result in huge debts and the constant burden of knowing that a huge proportion of the world's population don't have their most basic human needs met, and somehow we, the youth, need to fix it. when I hear that lyric delivered by Elena with such fragility in her voice, all of the above comes to my mind in that split second, it's astoundingly resonant and beautiful to me.
"We're just completely awkward people" - Elena omg.. i fucking love her. I was so awkward meeting them, but Elena made it feel so normal when iI was talking to her..
Since discovering Neil Young and his big music catalogue over 25 years ago, I haven't been as excited hearing of a new band like Daughter about 2 years ago. I discovered them while searching for similar bands like Wildes, with "Bare" being my favorite song of theirs. The music of Daughter matches my soul frequency. If it was made of glass it would break. It feels like their music is made just for me. Amazing and beautiful arrangements in its simplicity and with a deep sensitivity. Great lyrics and voice. Very special for me. It's the pauses and single notes and words that matter. They've perfected it and I'm very glad I've discovered them. Too bad they put out only so few albums.
Best most unbelievable delicate performance on NPR, judge the sound to the effort, most amazing musicians I have seen next to Ben Howard and India Bourne, thank you so much NPR for these tiny desk concerts, please please help out Ben Howard and India, they deserve this exposure, but always much love for what you do. peace
to me this Concert sounds interesting and great on UA-cam, because someone had the effort to professionally record something really minimalistic - no or very few cuts on the camera, but a great picture! as well as a mono soundtrack (only that one microphone) pushing Elena far into the foreground while sadly causing the guys to be too silent on the track, the audience's listening expreience must've been really breathtaking there as they must've had a good (stereo ;-D ) sound, always hearing loud what they concentrate on - in a really great way, probably the best daughter concert on UA-cam, although they're all extraordinarily good and their performance is per se flawless... Best Regards, maeander
Todd Davis I probably will. I just watched this performance and it is quiet similar - the above fits to this one as well... I think I understand what you mean with that intimate experience, I've been on some performances with very few people around them, they let you recognise the finest detail! But that is the bad thing about that there are too few microphones, in this video the sounds from the drumkit were details, but they should be strong and clear imho, usually only things like small flaws make those details I mean, but when the sound isn't the right way - which it in both cases imho is - it is not quiet the intimate experience you talk about, it's more like a distorted experience... Best Regards, Maeander
Its been 10 years since i used to ride my longboard.. bombing hills listening to daughter to get through some tough times.. made it through but ill never stop listening to this..
right and yet she has one of the most beautiful voices ive ever heard. i wish she could hear it the way i hear it. i would never shut up if i sounded like her
My favorite thing is how Elena almost sounds like she's singing through gritted teeth. Like she sees all the bad things that happen and inside is a torrent of emotion that shines through so well in their music and lyrics, but their performance is so restrained and composed. It's beautiful.

SpookyApparition I've never played or had the knack for percussion, strictly speaking as a guitarist, but what he does, to me, is just awesome. I would have never thought to come up with that pattern and the way it just flows subtly with the guitar is perfect composition to this song.
SpookyApparition Just as Jeff Rauschl said, it's subtle and precise, percussion is made to accent the melody and to set the rhythm.
That's what i see everytime i hear this!!!
Daughter's music touches my soul like nothing else. I keep coming back here because I always find that special kind of peace that my heart needs.
First heard daughter in 2012, I saw them live in 2013... I also happened to meet her after the show. She is one of the sweetest and humble artists I have met
I get a little droplet of a tear in the corner of my eye every time I hear this band. Gorgeous, gorgeous music.
this sounds eXACTLY like on the record what kind of sorcery?????
practice and talent
these probably are the kind of Artists who record in a Close studio with the entire band Playing together, with no separate takes..in today's age of Technology and Luxury❤️
@@kevinlajoie2966 and sound engineers
I disagree. I like this version of Landfill even more than the studio one.
@@uelideschwart4056 pst there are sound engineers making this sound this way...
from landfill:
"throw me in the water, don't think about the splash i will create."
the way she sings it, even if that small fraction of time towards the end of the line, really sent me somewhere else and back. sublime.
i cant believe her voice just sounds like that... amazing
cant remember the last time music made me cry. this is... something.
she is so beautiful, inside and out.
End of 2021 and still loving listening to this. Probably have listened to this fully about 30+ times by now
8:30
Guy (in the audience?): "That looks like a completely awkward space to play in"
Elene: "*giggles* No, it's fine; we're just completely awkward people."
In love whit this scene 😂
I just discovered this band in June 2020, this is so underrated.
The lead singer went solo! You should look her up: EX:RE
@@owenthebean515 I thought ex:re was just a side project of theirs.
You’re in for a treat. I keep coming back to these videos yeArs after
me in july!
The Afr0 It is! They (Daughter) were going to make a tour through Europe this year, but they had to postpone it due to the pandemic :/
as soon as the first notes started, i uttered my most sincere "oh boy"
Landfill is absolutely incredible music.
I think npr should bring daughter back to sing stuff from not to disappear.

agreed. I'd also love to ex:re in the studio
I just love the truth and sincerity in her voice and the way she does it.
It's rare that an artist's live is just as stellar as their studio version... this is one of those moments.
"We're just completely awkward people" - Elena omg.. i fucking love her.
I was so awkward meeting them, but Elena made it feel so normal when iI was talking to her..
Elena is extremely shy and reserved, and I think it's beautiful. It's breathtaking actually, what she manages to do with that.
in the landfill song, the drummer was doing the things! well done drummer person, you nailed the drum things!!! :)
Heartbreaking and healing all at once. Been coming back for years, thank you for giving us this masterpiece, Tiny Desk.
Best most unbelievable delicate performance on NPR, judge the sound to the effort, most amazing musicians I have seen next to Ben Howard and India Bourne, thank you so much NPR for these tiny desk concerts, please please help out Ben Howard and India, they deserve this exposure, but always much love for what you do. peace
to me this Concert sounds interesting and great on UA-cam, because someone had the effort to professionally record something really minimalistic - no or very few cuts on the camera, but a great picture! as well as a mono soundtrack (only that one microphone) pushing Elena far into the foreground while sadly causing the guys to be too silent on the track, the audience's listening expreience must've been really breathtaking there as they must've had a good (stereo ;-D ) sound, always hearing loud what they concentrate on - in a really great way, probably the best daughter concert on UA-cam, although they're all extraordinarily good and their performance is per se flawless...

maeander
maeanderdev Search NPR tiny desk Adele...it you want to hear extraordinary. just love love the intimate experience.....peace and love

Maeander
AURORA
sounds exactly like the recorded version!...wait a minute sounds EVEN BETTER truly amazing.
"Its ok, we're Just completely awkward People". Helena is so cute and amazing. So tallented
She got me tearing up,the pain in her soft voice,in the end I got the story...so glad I found her❤
Its been 10 years since i used to ride my longboard.. bombing hills listening to daughter to get through some tough times.. made it through but ill never stop listening to this..
I love the way she smile after every song, she's totally embarrassed
right and yet she has one of the most beautiful voices ive ever heard. i wish she could hear it the way i hear it. i would never shut up if i sounded like her
My favorite thing is how Elena almost sounds like she's singing through gritted teeth. Like she sees all the bad things that happen and inside is a torrent of emotion that shines through so well in their music and lyrics, but their performance is so restrained and composed. It's beautiful.
oh my!! she got that thing!! she caught me at once, her voice, her presence, skin thrills ...
+Seb Bouclier
You mean that... beyond her frail facial beauty and cute posh awkwardness... she has an arse?
Seen them live twice and cried both times. Elena pours her heart out and it hits me in my soul.
I'm late to comment, but this is the most genuine way to play. Doesn't give a feeling of an act. There's genuinity in their music.
I just want to keep her voice stay in my body and fall asleep forever.
Y. Mitchie woah dude this is deep
Mitchie Ocean word
This is beyond deep. This is what you find in the core of a pure soul. This is Art, This is truth and this is true beauty.
Boy they get some humble people on their sessions now and then :) Elena is so adorable and the band is great!
Every once in a while I come here, just to forget life for a while... Truly amazing performance from Daughter.
