Tex-Mex Pickups | Fender
/ fender
To me, these are the best fender pickups. Sound great!
Great upgrade from stock import pickups. Tamed highs, more mids and a tighter low end.
I’m glad you have the same guitarist on the same setup for both the Texas Specials and Tex-Mex pickups. The Tex-Mex pickups are the cheapest, so I was thinking maybe I’m just being cheap and should go for the ‘better’ pickups based on price, but hearing one set then the other, screw the price, I like those Tex-Mex pickups much better. I was also checking out the Seymour Duncan California 50s and I didn’t like them nearly as much as the Fender pickups.
Thanks for settling that inner debate.
It is a common misconception to think these are cheaper versions of Texas special but in reality they are different models.
Texas special is designed to be darker while Tex Mex is brighter.
I have these installed in my player series(mexi strat) and upgraded the nut and the saddles to brass and it sounds amazing just think dirty blues/country/rock/southern rock
Now that's the way to demo pickups! Been thinking to get a set of them. Sound nice.
I hear no reverb, yet there is Reverb when demoing the more expensive pickups. These pick ups sound 10x better than what is shown here, guessing on purpose.
I agree. I have these in my guitar and they sound fantastic! I've had a bunch of other Fender pickups. In other stats these are just as good. No need to change them out.
Man I totally agree that they’re really damn good pickups. I have a Strat that came with them in it and I’m pretty shocked at how good they are.
Wow, these pickups sound awesome in this video, to me! I fail to see how reverb would enhance the sounds played here, especially with the dirty sound and the delay.
It sounds almost like a limiter is on these. So dry. Obviously these are more than competent pickups usually. As long as they are made right they will be relatively classic in make and sound. They aren't actually overtly blues-y to begin with, especially if you are prone to setting strat pickups low
Got these pickups, they do sound better than this
Some of the best pickups from Fender, no doubt. Rich, quacky, bold.
And affordable 😎
Looks like Position 4 - Neck/Middle to me at 1:50 despite being labeled Position 3 - Middle. Compare with what Position 3 actually looks like at 0:49 and 4 at 1:03.
Definitely they mislabeled
I keep hearing bad reviews, but I like what I hear here.
Not sure where you’re getting those reviews, but personally I absolutely love these pickups on my road worn 60s strat
@Fender. I used to own a 95 tex mex strat. What are the differences between my old 1995 tex mex strat pickups and today's tex mex pickups?
Very similar sound to the alnico-5’s on the Mexican player strats.
Why am I watching this knowing I’ll never get this
theyre 60 dollars rn on Amazon
@@drowninglessonswithlee9986 I've heard those are fake.
HigherPlanes in musicians friend and guitar center, a set sells for $66
Ethan Martelle thanks man
@@HigherPlanes nah amazon gets a discount on a lot of things also i bought them myself and put them on my strat them to ones with tex mex's and they sound the exact same
Nice demo, I am actually planning to buy one of these prewired pickguards, but I have a question - is it compatible with a 2007 Squier Bullet Strat? Besides the 8 holes vs 11, will it fit? I am asking because I know that Fender strats have a thicker body and I am afraid there will not be enough space for the 5 way switch. Thanks!
Yes
This is 3 months old, but if you’re still contemplating, you could always buy the prewired pick guard and swap the hardware over if it doesn’t fit, and just replace the selector switch if needed
Can anyone tell me what guitar is that ? It's not a jimi Vaughan as it has a 2 point trem. But omg these pickups sound beautiful. My jaw dropped.
Hi , why the pickups are higher in the Bass side ? That s not a recommended fender setup …
Set them the way "you" like , try the recomended heights but all pickups/strings work differently. I think the guy in the demo has raised them to get a meaty rock sound and not the nice clean tone that Leo Fender was aiming for. These guys will stop at nothing to get you buy more equipment you don't need. Well spotted though!
Is the complete pickguard valid for a squier affinity?
I plan on replacing my squier affinity stratocasters pickups with these , will it be worth it?
For sure!!!! Less expensive than getting a mex strat but still getting that tangy sound
@@crysteltheriault6606 thank you for the advice
If you get full sized pots and these pickups, you’re getting the Mexican strat basically without having to buy a whole new one
It will in 2021....my new Affinity Strat has the 42mm nut. 2 point trem, new bridge style that's comfortable, no maple cap on the kinda fat maple neck.👍🏻🤠 Looking at it again, it starts a big fat C at the nut, then tapers to a slim almost D. I put 11's on this badboy, it is hard to get it just right, gonna have to study up on setting up a Strat a little more. I'll get big pots and switch, input jack..... I love it.
So worth it
Notice how they are setup lower on the trebble strings side and higher on the bass strings... Getting a lot of punch and bass. Glassy enough without being shrill.
I'll bet this is the guitar in the video on how to install your Tex-Mex loaded pickguard!
Is this demo a regular Player Strat w/ the Tex Mex installed? Thx
I might be getting a cheap strat in a few months. They're called California Series Squier Stratocasters and you can mostly get them in Asia. Are these the best cheap single coils I could get for the price?
I hope you got the California series squire. I've had one for a long time, I modified her within an inch of her life but she still plays soo good
I modified my squier affinity with this mics and it explodes
@@marsrivers that makes no sense
@@UnremarkableMarx why not?
The Se Squire some have a wider body and more solid wood body so you can fit a big block trem
Are these pick up used in squier strats? Cause that’s what they sound like.
What about HSS Pickups?!
Eugene is great. Class player. I’ve a late 80s Fender MIJ with boring old ceramics and I’d like Fender Alnicos in it. I want sparkly clean, not fat and not SRV Texas hot. Any recommendations? Think Knopfler, Gilmore, etc.
KRAZEEIZATION I’m telling you you’ve gotta try fenders Yosemite pickups. Incredible clean tones some of the best I’ve hear BUT are lacking in other aspects when compared to other pickups like Texas specials. Yosemite’s are very unique in my opinion, and they will forever stay in my arsenal
Try the Ford pickups for cleaner sounds.
Part # F-150
I’ve had these on a player telecaster that I upgraded 6mo ago and I just cant find its place and I play alot if what it is intended for southern rock, blues, country ect.. but it just wont do that I tried so hard to keep them as I already have it installed but I think it’s time to part ways also the hum on these is terrible even with a Boss noise suppressor…best of luck
Sweetwater has them for like $80
Are these RWRP pickups? I assume so but would like to verify.
Is it good also for mexico model?
How much would you price a 1986 3 knob strat- with tex mex pickups instead of the original fender strat pickups?
Would $450 be a good price?
I would email Fender directly about or. Theres also Fender Mod Shop
got it for $450
How did you guys get rid of the 60 cycle hum when playing with overdrive ? I know these pickups are not noiseless.
The audio is compressed to hell and back, not that that’s a necessarily bad thing.
Shielded cavity perhaps?
@@Slickdick99 ya that's why i don't use alot of compression, plus someone starting on guitar isn't gonna know what compression is for.
hearing a guitars full tone can give you an idea of what your looking for,
metal guys use compression on guitars if they use single coils or humbuckers on the brighter side, as single coils can get a little bitty. of course you got companies that comes up with stuff that addresses those issues by making noiseless pickups. the only thing about noise pickups im not so keen on,
there perfect for metal, but in other genres of music they tend to suppress the tone a bit. so i usually look for something that's gonna give me a bit of a balance, i like having a warm tone without sacrificing too much on clarity.
there's days i just wanna hear a nice clean sound out of my guitar,
but there's other days i wanna grind. that's why i got the Mexican Fender,
it gives me just enough of what im looking for.
@@Jeymez Which pickups in the Mexican Fender?
Is this the pick up used on the
MIM Standard strat? if not can somebody tell me the name of it
The tex-mex pickups were used for MIM higher end strats. I own a Deluxe Fat Strat 2009 with tex mex singles and it rocks.
@@MrMarioj87 I’ve just scored a deluxe strat with a piezoelectric bridge pickup MIM from 2006 - not much info on these but glad to hear these pickups came with them
These or the the Texas specials
Depends, what kinda thing are ya playing?
AM2PM
I had tex mex in a strat . I also have Texas specials in my lone star. I sold th tex mex strat. But wish I didn’t as they’d go better in the lone star. Texas specials can be ice pick in your ear - in my opinion tex mex get that medium hot chilli con carne sound way better and they’re cheaper too. I’ll be swapping my Texas specials out for tex mex I think
@@vinnieirvine1365 , Thanks for the info. I just both the Texmex going to put them in this weekend. They also are alot cheaper than the Texas specials
green323turbo
They’re nice- even with a 500k volume pot they still are not as bright as Texas specials with 250k. The break up and give a nice creamy blues tone but great for country too.
The bridge responds well to hooking it up to the share tone with the middle pickup.
The Texas special pickups are the opposite to sound like SRV because he played 59 pickups and cranked his amp
I bought these pickups and the bridge and middle pickups are really quiet compared to the neck pickup.
It’s probably the set up and/or poor soldering work. I’ve played multiple guitars loaded with the set and I’ve never experienced any drastic difference in output.
@@Wolfoe-ex2jj I bought the pre-wired pickguard from fender and both tone knobs works on only the neck pickup.
C. A. Your going to have to re wire the pickguard I had this same problem before it’s an easy fix feel free to reply if you have any questions or need any help
Could be the pickup height
Alnico V
Just remember. Your choice of
Strings also affects this
Played song?
Are these pickups made in Mexico?
Made in Mexico by Texans.
Why are they called tex mex??
Texas combined with mexico
@@markmabao2909 so basically Texas special but made in mexico
@@xaviabello4639 I think so. "Tex-Mex" cuisine is also a style of food that's popular in America: Texas-style Mexican food. It's spicy food, so calling them "Tex-Mex" let's you know they're kinda hot, but very tasty. :D
Because they taste like a Burrito.
@Guitar Dudeo No, they sound different than texas specials .. Just a different texas sound.
Guys i have a question. I'm thinking about bying these pickups. Everyone speaks good things about them. But if they are that good why are they si cheap?
There are plenty of great things that are cheap, especially in guitars. They're probably cheap because they're less popular than the Texas Specials, or are made in Asia.
They are made in Mexico unlike the custom shop pickups which are made in USA
@@RBunks92 ya and there's really only a few different things that separates them, but it's important to know that these are the older Mexican pickups,
which alot of people tend to like over the newer Mexican Player.
im not one of those people, but sound and tone is subjective with everybody.
that's also why there somewhat cheaper now, the Texas Specials are pretty nice to, but you will pay more for them.
Just a little too rockabilly for my taste
Wish I never got rid of my 80s strat now. Because these newer pups sounds like shit in comparison.
@Mr. Fizz but why does an old pickup sound better what makes it sound better because it's old ?
@Mr. Fizz Yeah what a bugger, I guess if they could have reproduced it they would have long ago.
it is not that they are better/worse, it is YOU like them more/less, old are better FOR YOU, for your ears, with your amp, for your style etc
@@SergeiVlassov No it's not just me. It's everybody I know that owns fenders as well.
@@skatetodeath666 probably you are all old enough and got used to older tones ) Magnets become weaker with time, so older pickups are weaker than the same model that is newer, it affects the tone as well. Most probably older are wider sounding, more open, and newer are more focused.
Awful recording
Why do Fender insist on dispaying how well their pickups work by adding an external distortion pedal line to the mix?? That is a waste of everyone's time, as just about every competitor's pickups would sound the same to the Great Unwashed Ear if you add the distorption pickup over UA-cam. Please provide real, CLEAN comparisons to your OWN pickups, and if we want to add distortion to it, so be it.
”Jedi”
I agree.with distortion they lose the tone completely.its all garbage.i would like to hear them with a touch of overdrive to thicken the tone just a little.
