Best Pour Over Coffee Kettle: Artisan barista Smart Electric Kettle

  • The slower a kettle can pour, the better it is in controlling that pour. That is the premise behind the Artisan Barista Kettle being a superb kettle for coffee brewing. With its restricted valves, you can choose your ideal flow rates of pouring. Even adapt coffee recipes to accomplish consistent brew by relying on the consistent flow rate from the kettle - as one less parameter you need to manage during brewing.

    Great for the home - superb for coffee competitions - the Artisan Barista kettle has everything you need in a good kettle- such as: temperature stability with variability (57º-100ºc). A fast boil function, boiling it's full 1L capacity in under 4 minutes, it's the only smart Gooseneck kettle to achieve this time with the volume, and does this using 1500-1800w element.
    Not shy about its design - it has elements that make this kettle very ergonomically sound for pouring and controlling that pour when brewing coffee. A silicone seal holds tight in the lid, and the breather holes are fixed on to the body of the kettle.
    The test of brewing two pour overs at once, simply interested me to see the outcome of two consistent pour rates - knowing full well - both were outside of the ideal flow rates recommended for brewing coffee (4-7ml/sec.) It was more an expose on the ability to pour with two kettles at once - and not needing so much as to control the flow rates - knowing the maximum flow rates were being achieved the whole time - which for many unaccustomed brewers is a tricky skill to master - and without using Acaia scales - or counting volume over seconds - almost is never managed.
    Certainly having the kettle restricted to 5ml sec would be of greater benefit to brewers - and I have passed this onto the team at Artisan Barista.
    The blind tasting and results were in no way set up to educate those who already understand advanced practices of pourover brewing - but I do invite those of you, who are, to consider the Artisan Barista and it's restricted pouring as a niche to experiment with and nead out what could make a better kettle for brewing. I for one, believe these restricted pours could bring a great benefit to managing flow rates - and also having the kettle able to be a regular kettle too.

      Mate, you've obviously put a lot of work into your presentation skills. Not that they were poor previously. But in this video, your confidence and self-conviction as well as the quality of information and mode of its delivery (i.e. your writing) were a pleasure to be an audience to. Well done for putting the work in and getting the reward.

    there are lots of kettles that can maintain temp after replacing kettle after first pour. Without this feature and comments on inaccuracy of temp that's a deal breaker.

    Like Hoffman says for the Felicita in his comparo video and users below who actually have it, this kettle cheats by racing to the desired temperature at the expense of overshooting it. Mine overshot from 90 to 100 degrees for 400 mL. Was sent second base which had a 2nd lower power element kick in towards the end (not sure if improved model or my first one was broken) but still 6 degrees overshoot = 2.5 minutes extra wait to get back to 90. Company's solutions were to a) get a smaller kettle, b) boil more water to reduce the overshoot (meaning longer wait to boil water), or c) mix in cold water at end.

    Nice video. Certainly given me something to think about. I was looking at the fellow. Maybe I could put the difference saved towards a better hand grinder.

    One thing I hate about the Fellow is the restriction, love the option to not have the restriction on this kettle. Also I hate the holes in the lid of the Fellow. I may need to get one of these.

      Nice to see that they have engineered it in such a way as to remove some annoyances from the Stagg. Even though they've obviously taken design cues from the Stagg and then changed enough to avoid any IP infringement issues I have to say that the Stagg is still significantly more beautiful to me. Still, the boost in useability (perhaps with some downside tradeoffs) and plus a lower price might be enough to leave me to sacrifice aesthetics as the difference is at least relatively small (as long as you don't get any of the stripy wood options).

    I take the lid off of the kettle and just pour from the top when I need to fill a teapot

    I've been very disappointed with how inaccurate the temperature settings are on this kettle. It heats up to the desired temperature fast and then cuts the element, but it's a hunk of hot metal and doesn't stop heating for another few degrees. Setting to 90 ends me up on something around 95 usually.
    Other than this is it a fantastic kettle, but I couldn't really recommend it unless you only really want boiling water

    I have the previous version of the Brewista Artisan, which I like a lot. I think Brewista stuff gets overlooked a little. Their Tornado brewer rules.

    Are the handles (main handle and those of the lid) easily removable? Because I hate plastic and if I buy this kettle I’d like to make a wooden copy. Thank you! Nice video

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Рік тому +1

      Yes. - if you indeed intended to remove the handles - and not use them again - then there is a plug at the back of the handle to access the hidden screw holding the handle on the kettle. To remove this handle - I'd say you do so at your own risk - it doesn't look quite as easy as the Fellows.

    I ordered this kettle from Alternative Brewing and it wasn't good at all. Not only it had a design fault (or 2) but it was very hard to use. I wouldn't recommend it at all. I don't know how this guy can?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  2 роки тому +1

      That's a good question - I've not seen any studies pointing to that particular assumption but it should be easy on the eyes - I was hoping to make a space that's practical to me daily for brewing - but with the amount of brew gear I have - and space available in the foreground - there's no way you would want to see all that jumbled up - plus the furniture that fit in space had to be certain dimensions 😂
