    Counter steering also works below 10 mph. Even if you take off from standstill and push right, the bike will go right. People tend to believe that the handlebars go where you push them, but actually, if you push the handlebars one way, then they'll move the opposite way.

    Countersteering is the only physically way to turn a bike when it has only two contact patches, at any speed. So, no, there's not a speed between 0 and 30 km/h where the bike steers by means of normal steering and then speeds above 30 km/h where countersteering is applied. Physics don't change and are not one for 0-30 and other for 30-up. What happens has to do with perception, so we fall into the belief that steering is for low speed manoeuvres just because our eyes can't differentiate the small contrary degrees movement of the direction.

Lean left go left..at speed of course.....maybe I’m subtly doing what you’re describing ? Gonna think 🤔 about it now....but not too long 😃 gotta get low and ride!

    Stop saying you have to ajust your speed BEFORE you enter the corner.If you don’t know the curve ahead, you cannot ajust your speed for it. Trail breaking is what you have to do.

      Trail breaking is an advised technique, not taught to new riders. First learn to safely and properly ride before moving on to trail breaking.

    • @SethMcClaine

      The technique described in this video isn't a stepping stone, its a crutch to get people on the road that aren't ready. If you can't slow down in a turn you are a danger to yourself and others. Instead of teaching a dangerous technique, more time should be spent teaching the correct and safe technique of trail braking.

      What really helped me understand counter steering was something they did in my Rider's Course:
      Take a plain bicycle wheel and use a broom stick or something similar and run that through where the axel would be. Now put your hands on the broom stick, on either side of the wheel. Have a friend start spinning the wheel, as fast as they can. With the wheel spinning, move your hands/arms as if you were steering your bike- move your right hand ahead while pulling your left hand back and vice versa.
      This allows you to really feel how the wheels are really just big gyros, and how moving it around feels even when you're standing still. Hope that helps! ✌

    • @franknorwood117

      @breezelow unknown Well, when you counter steer, the front wheel is simply being tipped into the corner, driven into the direction of the curve by the momentum of the bike. You might be confused thinking counter steering is actually steering the front wheel opposite the curve. You've just been making it harder on yourself your whole riding career by throwing your body into every turn to do what your hands could have done for ya. Cheers from a 23 yrold who everyday rides harder than you do....on a harley ;)

    I know you think what you're saying is getting through, but you're missing something trust me and a few people have listened to it. As you're approaching a turn, you have to counter steer. And then you have to lean in the direction that you want to go and hold the lean and the counter steering through the turn. Then as you're leaving the turn. You ease on the counter and ease on the leaning to straighten a bike to leave The turn

    How to corner with H-D.
    1. Before the corner slow down.
    2. Stop.
    3. Measure the radius of the curve.
    4. Realise that your bike can do suck tight turns.
    5. Turn around and head back home.
    6. On the way back, pick up bolts and nuts that fell off earlier.
    7. Grab a cold one.

      You have been countersteering from the first moment you handled a bicycle. Only way to get the bike into a lean. What is often misunderstood is that you only steer out of the turn for a fraction of a second. The bike leans and you steer into the turn depending on lean and speed.

    • @kjellg6532

My little grandson rode a balance bike being 2 yrs old, but he had and has no clue of the word Countersteering. In due time his grandpa will tell him the physics. Till then, he is happily riding!

    Hi, I was watching your video with interest, and found it pretty informative, but I couldn't help feeling a little anxious watching the plants on the side of the road as you're riding and explaining the technique. I have had sheep, kangaroos and cattle hiding in the shadows leap out and try to knock me over in the past, riding in the country at least in Australia. You don't get much time to react.
    Good explanation though.

    • @IrishBOBSister
      @IrishBOBSister 3 роки тому

      Yes! Some will say to counter lean but I find when I do this, it pulls me off my line in the corner and I make a bigger arc than I want to.

    • @waynemehagan9700
      @waynemehagan9700 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, at road speed you stay in line with the bike. If you aren't being super aggressive. A little bit of inside lean is ok but not really necessary for most curves or turns done within the set speed limits. Low speed turns (parking lot speeds, turning from a stop in first gear, etc. Then counter balancing makes the bike easier to turn) but that's a whole other topic.

    • @kjellg6532
      @kjellg6532 3 місяці тому

      @microatmospheremicrosend You steer left to get a right lean. Then you follow the turn by steering into the turn controlling your lead/speed.

    • @Dingsrud
      @Dingsrud 3 місяці тому

      To initiate a lean you must steer oposite of the direction you want to lean, but just for a short moment. To lean shifting your body is very ineffektive an useless in sharp turns. For the bike to stand up at constant speed you turn even hardere into the lean, you countersteer again.

    • @kjellg6532
      @kjellg6532 3 місяці тому

      @@jimanders9971 Sorry, but in my opinion you are, even at 1 km/h.
      Balance a broom in your hand. It is in an unstable equilibrium. You have to constantly countermove your hand. Now take your bike, drive it in a straight line at 1 km/h. Again you are unstable and have to correct. Drive in thin snow and look at your trail. Aft wheel almost a straight line, front wheel making a neat sine wave, you constantly have to bring your tyre patches in under your center of gravity, you countersteer, again and again.
      Now you want to run a turn at 1 km/h, to be in balance, you need a tiny lean. To get into a lean to the right, you for a moment steer left, you countersteer to the left to go right. As soon as you have that fraction of a lean, you keep it by in the same sine motion, now with a slight low speed turn, but the countersteering is there, all the time, to keep you balanced. To end the turn, you steer even harder into the lean and the bike stands up. To ride a bike is a everlasting series of countersteering, at any speed.

    • @jimanders9971
      @jimanders9971 3 місяці тому

    • @kjellg6532
      @kjellg6532 3 місяці тому

      @@jimanders9971 I simply disagree. You coutersteer at any speed to get into a lean, only way to effectly get into a lean. By countersteering you bring the center of gravity to one side of the bike and it starts leaning. From there on you control the lean by steering and controling the speed. If you go at constant speed and the turn is too wide, you steer out of the turn (i.e. you countersteer) to get mor lean. To make the bike stand up, you steer harder into the turn. This goes for any speed even at 1 km/h.

    Don't ride center of the lane, that's where crap gathers and cars drop oil, center is also crowned which will make holding a line harder
    Correct you slow down for the curve but as you start to lean you gently accelerate, just enough you're not coasting, then when your ready accelerate more
    Start on the outside of your lane to the curve, gradually move to the inside, on public highway(same for cars) at the end of the curve is when you should be closest to inside edge of your lane
