Penelope Scott "Rät" Official Lyrics & Meaning | Verified

- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- Last summer, college student and singer-songwriter Penelope Scott uploaded two snippets of her song, “Rät,” to TikTok, calling it a “breakup letter to the tech cult that is Silicon Valley.” The song was still a work in progress at the time, but it quickly took off online and became one of her biggest hits on streaming thus far. The self-produced track, which appears on her most recent album, Public Void, has racked up nearly 30 million streams on Spotify alone. On the song, Scott rejects the assumption that Big Tech has had a positive influence on our society.

I always hate watching these because the artist usually just speaks the lines in a normal speaking voice or completely messes it up when they sing it, so it was a nice change of pace to hear an artist absolutely nail their delivery
That’s because she talk sings.

This song triggers the hell out of me. It’s growing up in Silicon Valley feeling jaded about the misogyny and elitism of high tech, wanting to go to college as a sociology major to better understand your perspective of the strange microcosm that raised you, but feeling dumb as hell trying to build a path to that future in an education system that’s built to only support STEM minds and careers. It’s not believing your humanitarian interests had any value until you finally left because techies openly stroke each other’s ego, lauding their social-consciousness as a mark of their progressiveness, while hypocritically using it as a reason to sweep difficult conversations about systemic change under a rug. Meanwhile, they avoid admitting that they consider human nature irrelevant, and under their control in scripting computer language. They openly desire to play god, but fail to see that their personal struggles don’t make them benevolent ones if they can’t also openly confront their shortcomings. Even personally I’ve fought over and over again with family about the dangers of the lack of sociological thinking in tech and its perpetuation of all the toxic traits of other industries, but with a frustrating lack of self-awareness because it’s composed of “nerds” who think that because they’re “outsiders” they can’t also be bullies.
i dont know what any of this means but go off!
Damn, I'd somehow never considered that people actually grow up in Silicon Valley, that's absolutely wild... Your research sounds incredibly interesting, though, so I wish you good luck!!!
