Would Hong Kong be better if it was controlled by the British colonial government? I can tell you that the situation in the UK is very bad. Hong Kong people should not be so soft to accept the rule of an alien race.
The government of post-1997 Hong Kong is also a colonial government. And it's not the problem allowing Britain to rule Hong Kong or not, citizens of Hong Kong don't trust the Chinese government, and the self-governing power of the post-1997 government is easily taken away and interfered with by the Chinese side. They are using the Chinese concept to run Hong Kong and the fact that Hong Kong has fallen under Chinese rule. The british developed Hong Kong from small fishing villages to a city that had a GDP of 25% of china's GDP in the 90s, before the handover.
