I remember being young not knowing anything about sikhi while my grandparents are sikhs. I was in maybe elementary school 6th grade or maybe middle school and I would see Bhai Jagraj Singh in my youtube recommended. I knew nothing about my own religion and today I am 21 years old growing my kesh and connecting with the panth. RIP Bhai saab your words are beautiful and every sikh should listen and take it on because we are not going to live forever.

You can split words and lines of Gurbani in certain ways to derive different meanings For example: 1) Split in two : ਵਾਹਿ ਗੁਰੂ - Wondrous Enlightener a) ਵਾਹਿ - Wow, wondrous, in awe of ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥ Wondrous is the Vaheguru whose greatness is grand. (Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaaraan) ਚਾਖਤ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ॥੧॥ - upon tasting it, you shall be wonder-struck and amazed. ||1|| (Guru Arjan Dev Ji) b) ਗੁਰੂ - Guru dispels the darkness of ignorance ('gu'), and brings enlightenment and vision ('ru') ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੁ ਬਲਾਇਆ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ The Guru has lit the brilliant light of spiritual wisdom, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled. ||2|| (Guru Amar Das Ji) ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੇਰੈ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਬਾਲੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਤਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ Like a lamp lit in the darkness, the spiritual wisdom of the Guru dispels ignorance. ||2|| (Guru Amar Das Ji) 2) Split in four: ਵਾ ਹਿ ਗੁ ਰੂ - the four mantras of the four ages - in kaljug (age of darkness and spiritual ignorance), Guru Nanak came to save all and gave the Gur Mantar - most supreme Mantar that allows one to achieve liberation and is above any other mantar ਪਉੜੀ ੪੯ : ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ Waheguru mantar ਸਤਿਜੁਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਸਦੇਵ ਵਵਾ ਵਿਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ। In Satyug, Visnu in the form of Vasudev is said to have incarnated and ‘V’ Of Vahiguru reminds of Visnu. ਦੁਆਪਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਰੀਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਹਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ। The true Guru of dvapar is said to be Harikrishan and ‘H’ of Vahiguru reminds of Hari. ਤੇਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਰਾਮ ਜੀ ਰਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਜਪੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ। In the the treta was Ram and ‘R’ of Vahiguru tells that remembering Ram will produce joy and happiness. ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਗਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਲਾਵੈ। In kalijug, Gobind is in the form of Nanak and ‘G’ of Vahiguru gets Govind recited. ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਗੇ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਵੈ। The recitations o f all the four ages subsume in Panchayan i.e. in the soul of the common man. ਚਾਰੋ ਅਛਰ ਇਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਾਹਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ। When joining four letters Vahiguru is remembered, ਜਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਤਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪੯॥੧॥ The jiv merges again in its origin. (Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaaraan) ਜਤੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਤੀਰਥ ਓਨਾ ਜੁਗਾ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੨॥ Celibacy, self-discipline and pilgrimages were the essence of Dharma in those past ages; but in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Praise of the Lord's Name is the essence of Dharma. ||2|| (Guru Amar Das Ji) God being an infinite ocean and individual humans being glasses of water. Our aim is to break this glass (symbolic for ego (haumai) and illusion (Maya)) and merge back into that ocean (i.e. achieve liberation) 1) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what exalts us ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਈ। His Guru-manta is Vahiguru, whose recitation erases egotism. ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਣੀ ਪਰੋਈ ॥੨॥ Losing egotism and merging into the qualities of the supreme Lord, he himself becomes full of qualities. 2) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what provides the medicine to cure the disease of ego (haumai) and the pain caused by the five thieves and illusion (Maya) ਮੈ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥ So give me the medicine, the Mantra of the Perfect Guru. Through the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, I am saved. ||3|| (Guru Raam Das) ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥ There are five of them (the five thieves - lust, anger, pride, attachment and greed), but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind? ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥ They (the five thieves) are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1|| ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥ Chant the Name of the Supreme Lord, O my mind. (Guru Nanak Dev Ji) ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਭਵਾਹਿ ॥ The fascinating Maya has fascinated you, over and over again, and lured you into reincarnation. (Guru Amar Das Ji) 3) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what cleanses the karma of past mistakes and faults ਕਲਮਲ ਦਗਧ ਹੋਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਦਾਨ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ In this way, the sins of your past mistakes shall be burnt off in an instant. It is like giving millions in charity, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||Pause|| (Guru Arjan Dev Ji) 4) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what eliminates fear and pain ਦੁਖੁ ਕਲੇਸੁ ਨ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹੋਇ ॥ Suffering, agony and fear do not cling to one whose heart is filled with the GurMantra. (Guru Arjan Dev Ji) 5) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what brings peace to our minds ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਠਾਢੇ ॥੧॥ I have found the Perfect Guru, through great good fortune; He has given me the Mantra of the Lord's Name, and my mind has become quiet and tranquil. ||1|| (Guru Raam Das) 6) Chanting and remembering ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is above all rituals and is the highest form of act ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ The many religious rituals, good deeds of karma and Dharmic worship - above all of these is the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2|| (Guru Arjan Dev Ji) ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈ ਊਤਮ ਧਰਮਾ ॥ Chanting the Name of the Lord is the highest religion. a) ਵਾਹਿ - Wow, wondrous, in awe of
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥
Wondrous is the Vaheguru whose greatness is grand.

ਚਾਖਤ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ॥੧॥
- upon tasting it, you shall be wonder-struck and amazed. ||1||

b) ਗੁਰੂ - Guru dispels the darkness of ignorance ('gu'), and brings enlightenment and vision ('ru')
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੁ ਬਲਾਇਆ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
The Guru has lit the brilliant light of spiritual wisdom, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled. ||2||

2) Split in four: ਵਾ ਹਿ ਗੁ ਰੂ - the four mantras of the four ages - in kaljug (age of darkness and spiritual ignorance), Guru Nanak came to save all and gave the Gur Mantar - most supreme Mantar that allows one to achieve liberation and is above any other mantar
ਪਉੜੀ ੪੯ : ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ
Waheguru mantar
ਸਤਿਜੁਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਸਦੇਵ ਵਵਾ ਵਿਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ।
In Satyug, Visnu in the form of Vasudev is said to have incarnated and ‘V’ Of Vahiguru reminds of Visnu.
ਦੁਆਪਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਰੀਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਹਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ।
The true Guru of dvapar is said to be Harikrishan and ‘H’ of Vahiguru reminds of Hari.
ਤੇਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਰਾਮ ਜੀ ਰਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਜਪੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ।
In the the treta was Ram and ‘R’ of Vahiguru tells that remembering Ram will produce joy and happiness.
ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਗਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਲਾਵੈ।
In kalijug, Gobind is in the form of Nanak and ‘G’ of Vahiguru gets Govind recited.
ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਗੇ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਵੈ।
The recitations o f all the four ages subsume in Panchayan i.e. in the soul of the common man.
ਚਾਰੋ ਅਛਰ ਇਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਾਹਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ।
When joining four letters Vahiguru is remembered,
ਜਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਤਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪੯॥੧॥
The jiv merges again in its origin.

ਜਤੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਤੀਰਥ ਓਨਾ ਜੁਗਾ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੨॥
Celibacy, self-discipline and pilgrimages were the essence of Dharma in those past ages; but in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Praise of the Lord's Name is the essence of Dharma. ||2||

God being an infinite ocean and individual humans being glasses of water. Our aim is to break this glass (symbolic for ego (haumai) and illusion (Maya)) and merge back into that ocean (i.e. achieve liberation)
1) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what exalts us
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਈ।
His Guru-manta is Vahiguru, whose recitation erases egotism.
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਣੀ ਪਰੋਈ ॥੨॥
Losing egotism and merging into the qualities of the supreme Lord, he himself becomes full of qualities.
2) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what provides the medicine to cure the disease of ego (haumai) and the pain caused by the five thieves and illusion (Maya)
ਮੈ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
So give me the medicine, the Mantra of the Perfect Guru. Through the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, I am saved. ||3||

ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥
There are five of them (the five thieves - lust, anger, pride, attachment and greed), but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?
ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥
They (the five thieves) are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1||
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥
Chant the Name of the Supreme Lord, O my mind.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਭਵਾਹਿ ॥
The fascinating Maya has fascinated you, over and over again, and lured you into reincarnation.

3) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what cleanses the karma of past mistakes and faults
ਕਲਮਲ ਦਗਧ ਹੋਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਦਾਨ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
In this way, the sins of your past mistakes shall be burnt off in an instant. It is like giving millions in charity, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||Pause||

4) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what eliminates fear and pain
ਦੁਖੁ ਕਲੇਸੁ ਨ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
Suffering, agony and fear do not cling to one whose heart is filled with the GurMantra.

5) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is what brings peace to our minds
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਠਾਢੇ ॥੧॥
I have found the Perfect Guru, through great good fortune; He has given me the Mantra of the Lord's Name, and my mind has become quiet and tranquil. ||1||

6) Chanting and remembering ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ is above all rituals and is the highest form of act
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
The many religious rituals, good deeds of karma and Dharmic worship - above all of these is the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||
