If you do not know the basics of shipping industry, please do not talk about it. DP World knows how to run their business and let them do what they want. If you think Vizhinjam is going to be a threat to Colombo or any other port in the world, you are living in fantasy land. No port in the world has survived as a pure transhipment hub unless it is backed by a shipping line, like Tanjung Pelapas, Salalah etc. Vizhinjam has no shipping line backing it. Plus the tanshipment rates in Colombo are so low, Vizhinjam will have to quote the same or lower rates to attract business. The port is going to lose heavily financially. Unlike Vallarpodaom, Vizhinjam has zero base/local cargo. Closeness to international channel and deep draft are not the sole factors that decide the success of a port. Good luck to Vizhinjam and its backers.
