He doesn't sell add space to the feed the children commercials that reinforce the "dirty destitute" Africa theme. He didn't write Tarzan. He is not a dignitary. He doesn't work for CNN or Fox News and there are current employees for both networks that have said far worse with straight faces. Judging from his interviews he seems very self-aware and thoughtful. The material is very satirical but there's this theory that "the dumber a person is the easier it is for them to be offended". He's absolutely a provocateur but, they can't all do the "yo mama" jokes, crack head impressions and self-depreciating Kevin Hart routines.
He's poking at both sides. The joke is structured well and it's delivery makes you respond to him negatively/positively. He knows what he's doing. I mean don't expect a textbook page about "why slavery was good.' By jerrod Carmichael". If you're taking it that close to heart then you need to consume it differently. I listen to a lot of his standups, and while I'm not on board with everything he says, I like that it provokes my brain to laugh or challenge common ideas. He's obviously not denying the horror of slavery, he's just encouraging humbleness in todays state of mind. I'm half native American but I can't speak on behalf of my ancestry for their actions or what they went through or if they went through anything at all, I don't even know what the fuck it means to be Native American. But I'm still grateful for my easier place in a world that is unquestionably fucked up.
I knw I should respond but just like his comedy, your comment just rubbed me in an unsettling way. Firstly I would like to say that I am happy for you being a half native of America. I believe that natives of America shouldn't be called red Indians. That was a name given by and ignorant explore who wasn't bothered to even learn the names of the tribes that were found there. I don't knw if u do one the history of it natives, but for you to put down in your comment saying "IF, they went through anything", it just implies to me like you are not sure if your ancestors suffered as much loss as u may think. May I ask, have you read the real story behind Pocahontas? Not watched the white washed version the Disney made. If you have not, then please read about it. Because then from there, you learn something. So next time you won't put "IF" in a sentence that talks about your ancestors suffering from colonialism. I don't knw you at all, but I dislike and hate anyone who forgets that that the land they call their home isn't theirs but is a stolen land from natives who were never acknowledged to be given their own name and got stuck with a name given by and ignorant man.

for people that get mad when a comedian says 'horrible' things in their stand up - chill out. its a stand up show. pay attention to everything said, how its said, and how the comedian reacts to the audience when its said. this guy probably does not actually appreciate slavery. he's making a funny joke about how black people are still persecuted a lot now a days, but how even with that, he feels America is still the best country to live in. and he says it in a very funny way of getting to that point. its stand up, not reality. do you people get mad at a super hero movie because there really isn't people that can fly faster than airplanes, and have metal claws coming out of their fists? no? cause its just a movie? well, this is just stand up, and damn funny at that.
Yeah. Very ironic. Hes pointing out weird ideas. Like, on a human perspective, living in N. Korean dictatorship is horrific and that America is a superpowern; and despite being in a post slave world, it isnt living malnutritioned in N. Korea; which is saying something. Still, it's ironic for the wrong reasons. It's safe comedy that doesn't challenge the audience. It literally softened his experience as a guy who got abused by the cops because, "at least I'm not under a dictator" but it came full circle to settling for the complacency of being an American comparative to being an abuse victim in an abusive relationship. Still, it's too smart to matter. They just laughed. I doubt they fully understood what he said.

Would you say there's no such thing as Jamaican ethnicity...Brazilian ethnicity...Puerto Rican ethnicity...Dominican ethnicity? Because the slave ships landed there as well...Afro Americans were NOT in West Africa, majority of our ancestors were. Our ancestors ALSO came from Europe and indigenous peoples of the Americas hence the variety in our skin tones, facial features, eye colors and hair textures. We are not as "pure" as a common West African from any country there.
He needs to refine his comedy. His joke basically says if it weren't for slavery, Africans would not have made it to America. He is making an assumption there is only one way that could happen which is marrow minded. It's this either/or thinking that is a huge problem. I like what he is trying to get at, but he could do a lot better.
I feel like I am receiving an interesting history lesson. I'm an Aussie, so American history is not my strong suit. Having said all this, I have been watching his sitcom and have now seen his ideas fleshes out and find him quite interesting.
I probably took it from someone years ago as it rang truth: Whatever [shite] was before my birth: e.g. Hitler Stalin Netanjahu my grandgrand's forgotten crime or heroism etc was GOOD, just plain good, since it led to me being here... And now Carmichael makes fun of this simple truth and says he d be in Africa. No he would not, exist= be. His grand grands could ve never met to cause/make him... without slavery...
When i saw him on the amazing joe rogans podcast i was surprised but now i know why. Joe is no moron but he is very patriotic. You have to make an effort and be so intelligent to think this bit is ironic, literalky no one gets the joke... The morons who run things Will just take it at face value, because you can. What he said could mean he knows his place. He is saying that he should be thankful for slavery, that is naked ambition, he is playing to the expensive seats with this bit.
Question. Has this man visited the continent called "Africa" or is he just talking about what he has seen via Media? Also what country in "Africa" IS HE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT?? They are all different to each other and some places thrive.
Africa is a huge continent with 54 countries, larger in area than North America, and more populous than North and South America combined. There are Egyptians, Moroccans, Indians, Kenyans, Nigerians, Afrikaaners, Europeans, etc. etc. people in Africa speaking hundreds of different languages, different body types, different cultures, different ethnic identities, different economies. Painting this massive diverse continent as one monolithic, impoverished, disease ridden and war-ravaged stereotype is lazy. Stop hitting softballs for blooping singles. Swing for the fences and take on real issues.
It's so weird how Jerrod Carmichael weirdly draws out the audience's beliefs in how they affirm America's cruelty like abusive spouse victim. It says less about the comedian and more about the audience that affirms in it their laughter. But that's comedy. It's ironic. Getting you to laugh at things you normally wouldn't but they dodnt even gauge him. They just laughed. I get what he's saying though. The audience agrees with the joke that blacks should be happy here and that they could be worst places like N. Korea or Africa. Hes smart but this was just too dark.
Listen, listen my fellow black sisters and brothers Jerrod's comedy material is very ironic, layered, complicated at times and always educative if you let it be.. I don't dig too many comedians because most of them are just simple ignorant and have the same or similar style but this guy right here, I have been following him, he is a breath of fresh air. It's as if Dave Chapelle and Trevor Noah were brothers and had a baby brother 😩😍🤓
I'm Nigerian and initially when I heard the Africa joke I thought "another victim of the American education system whose only knowledge of Africa come from those UNICEF ads" but after hearing the rest of his set, I actually understand the joke and I thought it was really funny, maybe a little naive but definitely funny
From an African, Africa is a much better place than African-American slavery. All those slaves wished they had the option to go back to their motherland. And what part of Africa has he even visited? Africa is a continent. Why did Dave Chappelle go there if it was such a horrible unlivable place.
Complacency disguised as high thinking comedy. Not that impressed with the bit. But then again Carmichael has been pretty clear in his intent to self deprecate him and his entire history.

for people that get mad when a comedian says 'horrible' things in their stand up - chill out. its a stand up show. pay attention to everything said, how its said, and how the comedian reacts to the audience when its said. this guy probably does not actually appreciate slavery. he's making a funny joke about how black people are still persecuted a lot now a days, but how even with that, he feels America is still the best country to live in. and he says it in a very funny way of getting to that point. its stand up, not reality. do you people get mad at a super hero movie because there really isn't people that can fly faster than airplanes, and have metal claws coming out of their fists? no? cause its just a movie? well, this is just stand up, and damn funny at that.
He missed our, Africa is the best place on earth, dont believe the news.
Lmao damn. That's deep, wtf
Good comedian, but yeah the Africa joke was pretty ignorant lol
Maybe take Jokes as jokes instead of taking them seriously
Chris Rock had a similar routine about America.
Proud African born n raised. Stfu
Is he being ironic...?
+Edurne Ace he's orthodox
The fuck? Mannnn you buck dancing for those folks!
Was that supposed to be funny?
Jerrod Carmichael is the great value version of dave chappelle
No
@@Slice2099 what u know about comedy???
1:53 got me in sticthes.... does the kid have eyes, just keep praying:)
Connery at its finest. Yup nbc will love you
+optiKalismo some folks just aint gonna feel it brah. i think he's a funny dude but he was kinda reaching on this bit. any individual who praises slavery will take some type of backlash especially if they happen to be black. which i'm sure he knew that when he wrote it
+MachineGunMouth Exactly.
+Mo Getit NBC (nothing but Connery) NBC found a middle of the road black guy (Points out the Ironies, that non-people of color love to use (he uses Sarcasm which is the white young mans passive aggressive anger) he will do well (backed by Neal Brennan Dave chapple fame)

lol White supremacy supporter are we? Thank you massa oh thank you for the beatings, the rapes, the humiliation, thank you great white hope for separating our family's, that resulted into single parent house holds to this day, Thank you God for letting us build this country only to wallow in 100 years of Jim crow (look it up) Thank you for taking our Religion (spiritualism) and giving us BS Jesus Oh thank you thank you
*****
thank you for your response Mr. Squirrel now why an upstanding white man like yourself is using so much profanity i don't know Now lets examine some things ok the Trans Atlantic Slave trade was very unique to any other chattel slavery there was a Step by step process to the madness here are some examples
Step 1
Conquer the God Replace there Spirituality with your own (Jesus) The first slave ship was called the GoOD SHIP JESUS this still is in place today if you are good Jesus will come back for you religion was/and is used to break the black woman)
Step 2
Take away the language (so slaves can not communicate) But slaves was smarter than that We created something called Negro Spirituals example The song Steal away (was about running away)
Wayed in the water (means when you run way stay close to the water so the dogs can not track you)
Jimmy crack corn and i don't care master gone away (master has died) rappers still code there music today, and whites who buy most all rap music still aren't getting these messages...lol
step 3
Turn the slaves against each other Make blacks Over seers (lets them dish out the punishments i.e. whipping, and flogging)
make sure the slave trust only master, put light skin blacks in the house (like they are white) keep the dark skin ones in the field this still holds affect to this day
Step 4:
Break the Black woman, and in return she will break her male offspring to do what the master, says and wants In place today if you don't believe in Jesus a black woman won't date you, 1 and 4 go hand and hand
i can go on and on please do the research
Now i am going to give you a gift this is was written on the pyramid walls 6,000 years ago from ancient Kemet or Egypt as whites call it your bible
66 books in the bible right 6x6=(36) 6+6=(12 ) 36x12=432 radius of the sun now take the average body temp 98.6
9x8x6=432 Ancient Africans (knew this) Whites Roman, and greeks stole it repackaged it sold it as Christianity please research thank you for the intelligent convo ok and stop using so much profanity you are better than that, and free your mind i feel sorry for you
If you're ignorant about Africa & what's really going on in America... yeah, this shit's funny.
He looks like Stokely. Related??
I can't tell how I would feel about this if I was black. I'm white and found this funny, but now I don't know if I'm racially insensitive. Ugh
Thanks for the honesty we blacks are pissed at him
@@paulthemba9961 its just you urban blacks. other blacks like me agree with him. hes right
What?... Huh?
Yeah he's never been to Africa. The little village he thinks it is. Africa from last year in 1418.
He is fucking brilliant
comedy has to be funny and illuminate the listener. this was not even thought out, especially since I lived like a king in 3 different countries in Africa.
you're the reason Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock don't go to college campuses anymore.
did u get Ebola?
+robloxguy0 did you compare this trash to Chris Rock and Seinfeld? Check your taste dude. You're like gutter trash level, comparing this to gold. Instead of crafting witty comebacks to get likes, how about you reread my well crafted comment and realize it means like 3 different things, none of which is even remotely social justice warrior ISH, which is why Rock and Seinfeld don't go do campus gigs.
shakaama dude if you was so next level you wouldn't even be on youtube watching comedy videos lol you aint nothing special and "knowing" what's going on really means nothing if you aren't do anything to change the conditions! So take your internet social activist ass on somewhere cause you are talking some bullshit you obviously have nothing going on in your life
+dirk diggler I wouldn't be on youtube? I'm a youtuber with millions of views. Have a seat. Have several seats.
I live in Africa it’s not that bad lmao it’s actually better in my opinion
lol he's jokes.. but he honestly need to visit Africa. I'm Canadian and i moved out here for work.. and man, i don't think i want to go back anytime soon. So humble here, decent prices.. everything's natural.
That “joke” was so bad it made me squint my eyes SMH
Africa is a continent and AA's were in West Africa.
+AnimefreakHQ No Afro-Americans were in America, hence why their ethnicity is American. Majority of their Ancestors came from West Africa.
+AnimefreakHQ man you watch anime you don't know shit shut up
dirk diggler I'm Somali. That's as native African as you can get. I can trace my roots all the way to Somali origin before Abrahamic religion.
+AnimefreakHQ Wait, what?! No such thing as American ethnicity? You sir, are lost. Do you even know what ethnicity means? Would you say there's no such thing as Jamaican ethnicity...Brazilian ethnicity...Puerto Rican ethnicity...Dominican ethnicity? Because the slave ships landed there as well...Afro Americans were NOT in West Africa, majority of our ancestors were. Our ancestors ALSO came from Europe and indigenous peoples of the Americas hence the variety in our skin tones, facial features, eye colors and hair textures. We are not as "pure" as a common West African from any country there.
He's usually funny af..but this shyt wack..im surprised he didnt say he'd be naked chasing lions with a stick..
not kool bro any other black comedians can make any race of people laugh without disrespecting there own race/ motherland 🌍
I disagree with what he said. But it's still funny tho. Lol
He needs to refine his comedy. His joke basically says if it weren't for slavery, Africans would not have made it to America. He is making an assumption there is only one way that could happen which is marrow minded. It's this either/or thinking that is a huge problem. I like what he is trying to get at, but he could do a lot better.
Is slavery the only way Africans made it to America? Were there not forced and free migration?
I feel like I am receiving an interesting history lesson. I'm an Aussie, so American history is not my strong suit.
Having said all this, I have been watching his sitcom and have now seen his ideas fleshes out and find him quite interesting.
Talking negative about Africa and positive about slavery?... Sounds like he has some serious self-hate
Bruv he could've ended up in Haiti too?
It's funny because a lot of Black people actually think like that 😂. I say that as someone who understands the racist undertones of the joke.
AFRICA'S NOT THAT BADDD BROOO
Mind how you talk young man.
I'm off to make my sandwich...
Thinks unlink f DNC jobs Bob ink Bob NC join fun CBC CBC CBC add giving job JC in if on n him
+Shadon Hunter Take your medicine, you're rambling.
Who else wasn't laughing?
And people are laughing at this...
Ikemba Bomani Ojore I don't find this funny at all. It's so ignorant to the point, it's embarrassing.
@@wheremyshekelsat1430 Lmao and i am guessing your high IQ ass led you to write that ignorant piece of shit comment? Grow Up
I am from Africa and I think that was funny ..yes Africa is bad but come on have joke lol
I can tell this man hasn't stepped foot in Africa.
Naw dude south africa is amazing n have billionaires in some countries dont believe the shit t.v. says about africa
Guess what my fellow Africans we have AIDS😐. TF! who brought it to our ancestors who lived in harmony years ago?
Good comedian, Africa bit a little igorant though, no wonder 'ignorant' associates with 'american' lol
From an African, Africa is a much better place than African-American slavery. All those slaves wished they had the option to go back to their motherland. And what part of Africa has he even visited? Africa is a continent. Why did Dave Chappelle go there if it was such a horrible unlivable place.
+Blackwiz It's a joke, jeez.
+Blackwiz He's saying stuff to please the white man.
+shakaama or its a joke....you know....haha heehee?
He didn't say slavery was better than Africa, he said he rather live how he lived now than live in Africa
don't worry boss... am also sorry his grandpa got on the wrong boat from his village party
Complacency disguised as high thinking comedy. Not that impressed with the bit. But then again Carmichael has been pretty clear in his intent to self deprecate him and his entire history.
Americans are ignorant. Africa is a continent for a start. There is so many countries that are just as good as USA.
I get its a joke but there are billionaires in Africa sure some countries have some shit going down its a poor joke
Aids is every where not only in africa😤😤😤😤😤
