You guys are correct. This has the LT4 engine. Not LT1. Thanks for the input guys.
It is whatever the Wizard says it is. /thread
The eagle eyed viewers will also notice.
That the fuel pressure meter only peaked when the car was switched off.
Pressure was building when Mrs Wizard reved the engine. But it held at a lower reading.
However due to the fuel pressure dropping when injectors are firing an accurate pressure hadn't had time to adjust for the meter reading.
The engine still ran on lower pressure than pump could cope with. Very interesting!!!
Could one simply remove the fuel return line/pressure bleed and retain fuel cranking pressure???
I mean it ran but for how long??
Would it be driveable as the pressure was stable at idle and better when under revs??
Would you need to start it with your foot on the accelerator??
*CW* is this a race car, or just a *cruiser* like a Viper? LoL
@@statementleaver8095 The fuel pressure is vacuum referenced. With no vacuum the pressure is highest (around 43 psi is spec). At idle the pressure should be down to 36 psi or so. This is to keep a constant pressure drop across the injectors. The are exposed to manifold vacuum so when there is vacuum, the fuel has an easier time flowing out of the injector. At full load the manifold is at atmospheric pressure and pressure goes up to the 43. That's so the computer can assume the injector flow is consistent across all loads. Many newer cars have returnless systems that run at higher pressure and are not vacuum referenced but this was extremely common in the 90s.
It doesn’t help that Chevrolet you reuses engine codes. SMh
It comforts me that Mrs. Wizard got excited about pop-up up & down headlights. I knew she was a woman of taste and pure class.
They don't pop up and down. They roll forward 164 degrees. It's pretty fun to watch.
I was singing the song too @mtfan
@@houseofno I'd say that you're probably a lot of fun at parties, but I doubt you've ever been invited to any.
@@mtfan chill out lmao, as rude as he may sound he is actually right as they don’t truly “pop up” traditionally. We all love corvettes so let’s enjoy them and the Car Wizard’s Wizard-try
@@Joey856721 He went and did the "Actually" treatment on ton of different comments so yeah, I stand by my statement. All of us were on the same page and he isn't. It's a thing from Donut Media.
When I have the house to myself I enjoy some long-cranking.
HAHAHAHA
So, you've been watching Sam's step mom?
Do you inspect your check valve?
Careful with that; I heard it can lead to a failure of your solenoid.....
My dad had a Porsche 355 back in the day, you should hear his tales of how hard he'd crank on the gland nut.
Oh god yes!
Gran Turismo made me fall in love with this car, and the color blue in general!
was my choice car in gran turismo 3.
Strange that washing a car before driving it once boosted the performance or the oil changes
@@gdubya83 it was changing the oil on new cars. In the old gran turismos, changing the oil on a new car, was an automatic 10-30 extra HP.
I remember having a tough time smoking this and the Shigeno version 86 in that Seattle map lol
Always my go to car unless it was the Pikes Peak Suzuki. Otherwise I always ran the GS. I've only seen 4 in my life and I'm 34.
Who remembers this car in Grand Turismo?
Oh yea i do!
Definitely, use to pick this car all the time
The 94 GS in Gran Turismo was literally how I began my love of cars.
Yessssss!
Indeed! It got a new nickname too... The Grand Spin, it was a very spin happy car in Gran Turismo 2...
Not only could you have spinning issues, but on Grand Valley it was often stuck in the sandtrap or coming it dead last after a spin in the hairpin sections...
Sadly neither game did show that really awesome interior dash though! That was really nice.
Every C4 video should include a mandatory demonstration of the 180-degree pop-up headlights!
Actually the headlights rolled forward 164 degrees, not 180.
@@houseofno shut up
lmao
Or you have to start any vid of the car that way
every showcar sticker he showed i added +10 years to the owners age starting at 40 lol
What color cargo shorts you think he wears?
and you know he pulls up to any function wearing a $10 corvette t shirt

The pinnacle of the C4. LT4, 6-Speed, red interior, and a coupe. Perfect Grand Sport combination.
ZR-1 would like a word with you...
@@tommygeary1931 Good point. Although the LT5 and Lotus connection are sweet, the ZR1 is the coolest Corvette no-one cares about.
brings to mind the technician working on someone's hvac system at home...the owner gets the bill for 220 dollars, the owner looks at the tech and asks what's with the 220 dollar bill, i saw you hit the compressor with a hammer. The tech points to the bill breakdown,
1. hitting with hammer 20 dollars
2. knowing where to hit 200 dollars

Knowing where to hit $20
Knowing WHEN to hit $180!

Ive honestly fallen in love with wizards channel, its so genuine, so honest, truly just a great mechanic trying to spread his knowledge and love of cars, I just love it.
Just a glimpse of that Corvette, and automatically the music of the Chevrolet dealer in GT1 starts playing in my head
The look he gave Mrs. Wizard with that 3rd rev...😂😂
I noticed that too.
LOL, that was hilarious. I was thinking she was pushing it a little hard myself on that last one.
I have vivid memories of seeing these, in older Gran Turismo games. I still know that it was in Gran Turismo. This I think holds a special place to me. Absolutely lovely specification for a C4!
He made that diagnosis look simple but there was quiet a bit of skill and experience involved there.
Loved the video! I have had a 90 ZR-1 for 15 years and she's like a family member :) One thing that would have been worth mentioning is how easy the fuel pump is to replace in these cars. Most people would think that you would have to disassemble a bunch of things or drop the tank to change the pump- nope. Remove gas door, gas cap, and boot, disconnect fuel lines, unbolt sending unit, filler neck is attached to sending unit and pump- all pulls out as one unit. Easiest in-tank fuel pump i've ever done! Except, my car has 2 fuel pumps in there and it is a bit more difficult to get them to fit into the tank...
The reason for the price is....£50,000 worth of equipment in the shop and 25 years worth of experience which is priceless
Yeah for real. Never sell yourself short, Wizard. You're defo worth it.
It's not fast food. It's an increasingly complex machine designed to meet sometimes seemingly contradictory goals by Corporations who really don't care how difficult or costly it is to repair
I think he should cut the guy a break, we did get to see this machine on UA-cam...
@@Wayne_Nero if that was the case and people brought him cool cars to work on so he could show them on UA-cam I bet he’d stop putting cool cars up on his channel, business comes first , if a customer agrees to letting show their car that should be it
@@charlie1832 I definitely believe in skills and trust. You bring your car to a guy like that because of the over all time saved. 👍 one of the best for sure
I enjoy the fact the Wizards shop is getting better in the background as his channel goes on
And with those new lifts he's adding, Hoovie as more free storage for his hoopties! ;)
1996 Grand Sport came with LT4. That was a special build for that year. LT4 was available as option for 1997 Corvettes and even made its way into Camaro SS and Firehawk. (How do I know about LT4, I owned one of the LT4 Firehawks. Should of never have sold it.)
These Grand Sports were awesome and the color needs to be seen in person. Pictures don’t do it justice. Thanks for another awesome video Car Wizard.
Not in 97, not in the C5
There's no such thing as a 1997 Corvette with the LT4 engine. 1997 was the year the LS1 made it's debut which is what powered all Corvettes in 1997.
@@carlos64030 you are correct. Meant to write LT4 as option in 1996.
What most don’t know is all 1996 6spd Vettes got the LT4.
When I lived in Ohio there was a local woman In her mid 60’s who daily drove one of these.
Sandusky? I only ask because I live in Ohio and i've seen a C4 GS half a dozen times with an older woman driving it.

I LOVE THESE CARS. This is my favorite Corvette by far, especially in this paint scheme
Just the fact that you have a 1/2 hour min instead of 1 hour, shows that you're not trying to screw people. In fact it makes me think you should be a little more selfish :-P Good vid Weeezard.
It really depends on the mechanic. The usual guy I used to have didn’t charge you for a diagnostic fee if you decided to go ahead and fix the car. If not it was a flat 50 bucks.
Very fair price for not having some mechanic fool around, waste my money and time, and never find the problem.
Gotta love,
Pop pop up and down headlights...lol
Have you seen his movie on Tubi called Awful Nice? It is a good comedy
They don't pop up and down, at least not for the C4's. The headlights rolled forward 164 degrees, a fairly distinctive feature on the C4 Corvette.
This beauty is begging to be polished up
That's not a LT1. It's a LT4. Different intake manifold, cylinder heads and cam than the LT1.
💯💪
Same junk Optispark
4 bolt main block and slightly different crank also.
@@ab-cd456 All the LT1s and LT4s in Corvettes had 4 bolt main blocks. Camaros and Firebirds (F-bodies) got 2 bolt main blocks. The LT4 crankshaft was the same casting but a different part number as it received additional machining work.
Hey Wizard, dunno if you read comments on older vids like this, but something to point out to any of your customers with a C4 is that they need to lower and check / clean their spare tire holder from time to time. It has a very small drain port and that can get easily clogged with random road debris, resulting it in the spare tire sitting in a puddle of water and rotting.
I was told The red slash stripes were to identify which side of the car the driver sat in international racing where cars could be either left or right hand drive. I worked for a Corvette crazy Chevy dealer when these cars were new. In was an old school looking dealership build in the 70’s. The showroom would usually be filled with Corvettes....6 or 8 of them All lined up in various colors. We were allocated a few of these and also the purple and yellow pace car editions. When the C5 came out it had to be kept under a car cover until the official launch. We sold a hell of a lot more trucks, Suburbans and Tahoe’s than Corvettes, but they were his passion.
First! WOW! The last of a classic! One of my favorite Corvettes! Also the last Corvette to have a front engine and front mounted transmission. These had thirty more horsepower than non-GS Corvettes,
Actually, all manual 96's had the LT4, not just the Grand Sport.
I've been asked multiple times "Why would a mechanic charge you for 6 hours of labor when it only took them 3 hours to do it?" I always respond with "Experience! Would you want to get paid less for knowing more?"
They do that because they're accounting for broken bolts, etc.
Also takes into account those times when nothing goes right and it takes much longer.
Hearing him cycle the key and the smog pump cycling gave me flash backs to working in the 97 trans am.... not exactly good feelings 😝
quote that customer a new set of tires too. those look done.
That music that plays when Wizard raises a car is like in WWE when they lower the Hell in a Cell
ua-cam.com/video/ArmVFHDsv8k/v-deo.html
You mean to tell me that there was an issue with an LT1/4 engine and you didn't just wrongly assume it was the optispark like everyone else does???
Right? My Roadmasters opti had 160k on it when I swapped it. Only because the rotor bearing had a catch in it. Cool thing was my dad worked skilled trades at Delco-Remy where they were made. He happened to “borrow” a stack of bearings. So I rebuilt the original and put it in the AC Delco box as a spare lol
As Wizard said, when a car has been sitting for some time and won't start, 9 OUT OF 10 TIMES IT'S THE FUEL SYSTEM!
When fuel gets old, it gums up the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and even injector nozzles
Such an awesome example of the Gran Sport! Thanks for sharing, Mr. and Mrs. Wizard.
I had the opportunity to get lots of track time with one of these years ago. I drove High Speed Ring, Trial Mountain, and Apricot Hill. I didn't do too bad for being 8 years old lol
Those were the days .
Wizard, you are what us car says, you are old school and that is one of the best compliment one person can get. Thanks so much for your videos. Papad.t..
Collector Edition and Grand Sport were the rare models in 96.
Actually the collector editions were not rare, they made a lot... The grand sports were the only limited model.
I don't think I've ever seen a collector's edition c4 let alone a Grand-Sport or zR1 in person.
4th generation Corvette the Grand Sport, Silver Collector Edition, ZR1 would be the car that I would buy without hesitation.
Which one? You just named 3 different models.
@@johnjohnmcclane1818 I love convertibles or removable Targa roofs
If the C4 ZR1 in 1995 has a removable or convertible I would buy that car.
Otherwise I would have to flip a coin between The Grand Sport / Collector Edition.
I respect and appreciate your honest comment about why your knowledge has in itself its own value. I have found many people don’t appreciate the time it’s taken for someone (me) to learn something and willing to pay for it. I’ve been so frustrated with “friends” who seek to take advantage of my hard-earned knowledge and time, that it has critically injured the friendships. Cheers & keep going strong
Best c4 (non zr1) this is a VERY rare care with only 810 coupes and 190 conv made. It was the swan song to the c4 and it’s the best looking c4 you can buy. This is why they are worth much more than a regular c4 manual. I remember being a senior in High school when this car was launched and going to the Chevy dealership to see one. My dad had a brand new 96 silver trans am with a 6 speed (which had the lt1) and I was in love with the car of course being 18 and not having my license long. I remember drivimg it and imagining what the grand sport with the same 6 speed and lt4 felt like. A good friend of mine dads had an earlier Vette with the spitfire that had a tune and exhaust. We both had so much fun driving both of those cars and spent hours and hours with both doing everything from detailing to just enjoying a nice ride through the mountains. This vid brought back great memories.
LT4. The Grand sport and Silver Collectors edition in 96 came standard with the LT4.
The intake manifold was painted red from factory for the LT4
Yup--well, sort of! I once owned a Collector Edition myself with the 6 speed manual and LT4, but all the '96's with the 6 speed manual transmission got the LT4, while anything with an automatic got the LT1 (no Grand Sports had an automatic)--I have seen CE's with auto and they definitely had the "lesser" LT1.
I remember being a teenager and visiting the Bowling Green facility while these were rolling off the line.
Hard to find one with the red interior. Most I have seen have the black.
Looks as though it has the infamous intake manifold leak on the back. I'd bet that's what's coating the underside more than the underneath hose.
GEEZ the (bad) memories! :D BTDT when I had my '96 Collector Edition, I just figured mine did I didn't know it was common at the time! I very well remember the day the service guy at long gone Crest Chevrolet looked at me and said, "well, Terry, your extended warranty just paid for itself!" :D
These episodes are old but good. Love this car last year of C4. Grand Sport has C5 engine. LT1. This car is worth it.♥️💞💕💖👍😎 Cool.
C4 Grand Sport is awesome! What a beautiful car, nice low mileage example too.
One of the most recognizable special editions of what might be the greatest corvette design.
I had an '88 Corvette for a while back when this Grand Sport was new. I miss that car sometimes.
Yup, I owned a '96 Collector Edition between '98 and 2000, same LT4 Grand Sport engine (all manual transmission '96's got the LT4, autos got the 300hp LT1) and same red interior almost identical other than Collector Edition badging, silver paint and silver 5 spoke alloys that were in the standard Corvette tire sizes, that car sure had its ups and downs and drove me to grief plenty of times but all the same I miss it more as time goes by! It feels a bit odd now, so funny to see a car I once used as a daily driver and even used the cupholders for their intended purpose and tossed groceries in the back now be treated like a museum piece! :)
I would like to see you do a video about "right to repair" and give some promotion to the efforts by Louis Rossman to get Right to Repair as a direct ballot imitative.
That video a while back where you had to source a special laptop with special Lamborghini software on it through the grey market is the perfect example of why a much stronger "right to repair" in the automotive space is necessary.
Awesome Corvette! Thanks Wizard for showing it!
Today we going to look at this Corvette with some issues...... It really sounds like a Hooptie from a certain customer of yours 🤣🤣
"Squeak, rattle & roll". Back when the GM Van Nuys, CA plant was there, GM had an room to fix body noise for Corvettes under Warranty.
Love the GS, but I think it’s a LT-4 wizard. Great video!
Yes It's an LT 4

Hi Car Wizard! I hope you're having a very awesome day. Thank you for making the videos you do!! Love to see the different cars, and see info on them from such a good mechanic like yourself. Hope to see many more videos from you! : )
i absolutely love these types of videos. corvette and gm stuff i really enjoy personally lol but mainly showing over the whole car in quick detail and diagnosing and solving a problem while actually showing everything you do instead of just talking about it and not showing much like some other youtuber mechanics. keep this kind of content coming and never change car wizard!
These 1996 Chevrolet Corvette's were popular back in the day. Anyway, I am hoping on Thursday or next Tuesday for the first buy this, not that video of 2021 to come to the Car Wizard channel, either for Mitsubishi or for Chrysler. Thank you very much and have a great Easter.
Thats a nice car, appreciate you wizard, as a fellow shop owner/mechanic its motivating to see people doing mechanics right🍻
The first time I saw this in Car & Driver when I was in high school, I had to have one. 20 years later I found a good one and bought it. I think this is one of the best looking Corvettes ever made. It’s a shame this sweet thing hasn’t been enjoyed more. I put 85k glorious miles on it in 3 1/2 years as my company car and traded it last year when the harmonic damper was starting to show problems. Everything else just needed routine maintenance to keep it humming along. Great car if you run it often. If you let it sit, these things just rot.
Oh wow i remember racing this car in the game when i played back in the day one of my favorite cars for the game in certain races LOL
Another instructive video. This was the C4's swan song, with only 1000 Grand Sports built, of which 810 were coupes and 190 convertibles. All of the ones I have seen have been in excellent condition as they were always seen as collectibles. As to the 2019 Caravan sticker--I have one too and am so happy that the National Corvette Museum's 25th anniversary was that year and not in 2020!
Definately fair for diagnostic. Knowledge is power. Go wizard!
What a beautiful car. I remember using it in grand turismo 3
The transverse fiberglass leaf spring was also used in the w bodys until the mid 90s. I had a buick reagal with it and the rubber bushings on it wore out and you cant buy them. Theyre sold with the leaf spring as a single unit. To get around it we cut 2 strips of sidewall out of an old tire, folded them and inserted them where the old bushings were. It worked fine and I drove it for another 40k that way 😁
I also own a W Body. 1996 Cutlass Supreme SL and I replaced the bushings for like $5. Moog K644 - Transverse Spring Isolator Pad
I have a 93 corvette. On the balancer its a 2 piece and you don't have to pull the steering rack to remove. You remove 3 bolts and the balancer comes off the hub. Makes it pretty easy to get off. Has just enough clearance to get it out.
This guy “LOVES THIS CAR!”
Wow. Thanks for sharing wizard. That's really something special.
I do believe the Grand Sports got an LT4 not an LT1; the red intake really stands out.
All '96 6-speeds were LT4s
I was told long crank times could be lack of a cam signal, I know its that way on my volvo at least
Owning a 1994 convertible, I can tell you from experience that the C4's represent an excellent value in Corvette ownership.
Excellent value, did you hear the C8 starts under $60K👈
I DID... However I have never seen any sell near that price🤐
@@klasseact6663 doesn't mean it ever will be. The dealership racks the price up

I owned an '84 C4 back in '86 and I'll never own another one. Worst riding vehicle I ever purchased (Z51 suspension pkg).
Hi Wiz! (more c4's please!). The only thing left to determine with 100% certainty (cause I know you like your diagnosis) is to have Mrs. Wiz build up pressure and then you carefully clamp the sending line right after she turns the key off. It should hold the pressure until you unclamp the line. On a C4 this is pretty easy, but you do need to be cautious on a car like this when removing that darn rubber boot at the fill neck! Great content love it.
The GS has a different Cam and Lifters that’s what gives it more power and a hire tack point . Love this car .
I have a pair of those rare discontinued NOS rear fender flares for that car. Still factory sealed, sitting on them to be sold one day $$$ 😄
That harmonic balancer problem is the same on the C5 too. Expensive job
"Hutch" started the Grand Sport Registry. For him to pick this for an award says a lot about the car. By the way, that is the 1996 LT4 engine, not an LT1. In 96 it only came with the ZF transmission. The Grand Sport with red interior is called a "bleeder" and is worth more. The ultimate Grand Sport is the convertible bleeder. All 96 Vettes with 6 speed transmissions came with the LT4 engines. Most of them were equal to the first C5s in speed and handling. I had a red convertible LT4. Best car I ever owned.
Couldn't have said it better myself, Ron. :)
I was almost sure it was the Optispark.
1:35 how weird to have the weezard say my town
Sounds weird, but this is my all time favorite car. Would love to own one of these one day. So many fake ones out there with automatic transmissions.
Watching your videos take me back to being a kid. Listening to Car Talk trying to figure out the diagnosis with them.
I had #387... Lingenfelter 383ci that was then stroked to 396ci (after a slight mishap) with a procharger (low boost)... car was absurd... #2 on the GS registry. Speaking of GS registry, Hutch is the founder and "father" of the group (so to speak)... he was always good to me as a group member as a college kid with an absurdly modified GS. Red guts car too, my heart sped up a tad when I saw red guts... realized it wasn't mine though quickly there! Only like 219 red guts coups made, and all GS's had sequential VIN numbers, a first for GM for a special run car. I'm still on the list as #2 on the dynos on the registry... gosh I'd love to know where my old car is right now... the guy who ended up with the top dyno number was asking how I squeezed out the last extra hp as our builds were very similar, however, I think it boiled down to having a REALLY good tuner, who happened to have worked for Lingenfelter prior to moving to the Charlotte area and working for a place called MORE Performance (long since closed down). Gosh those cars are amazing... even a stock GS is fun, those LT4's are nice engines. www.grandsportregistry.com/dyno.htm
The sticker on the back window of the Corvette doesn’t look like it’s square

I love the C4 and I've always wanted a Grand Sport ever since I was a kid and saw it on the pages of Motor Trend.
Just brought my 91 to my new home yesterday. Cant wait to get on it!!
I got a 1988 C4, I’m a teenager but considering I’ve got the clutch working again, fixed the digital dash, fixed much of the interior, fixed the door panel, got the Vats system working again, replaced the steering wheel, replaced the fuel pump and assembly, replaced the aftermarket radio with the original Delco Bose radio and got it from not running at all to running and driving in a month… I feel I don’t apply to the teenagers that are destroying them.
Man what a treat!
Such a beautiful example!
👍👍👍
The C4 corvette has to be the best sports car bargain out there. I've owned two ZF 6 speed C4's. There is only one oil approved by ZF for this 6 speed and GM does not carry it or use it. It's a Castrol synthetic. I can't remember the exact weight, but it's out there on the forums. Switching to that oil was a big improvement in the feel of the transmission.
Very cool C4. I'd love a grand sport like that
Nice review and nice car. Check the rear shocks again. The tire wear pattern tells me the shocks might be blown
Having owned a '96 CE I can tell you the rear camber can go out of alignment and cause massive inside tire wear if you so much as look at it crosseyed! If I'd kept mine I'd have replaced the weak factory pieces with an aftermarket solution that would've permanently solved the problem.
I was allready 40 when that car came out. I remember new 1966 corvettes. When the 1970 came out I was in love. Dated a girl that had a white one.
Lol, I bought a 90 C4 Corvette last weekend. Man, it's fast, but I still prefer my 3rd Gen Firebird. Feels more luxurious on the interior. The C4 hugs you and feels "racy", but it's just feels too sketchy and delicate when going over bumps. Great car nonetheless. GM does a great job with its performance cars, mainly pre mid-90s.
Nice, i would like to test drive one of those!
