My father owned an appetizing store on Nostrand avenue in Brooklyn in the 1960’s. At one time appetizing stores were all over Brooklyn and NYC in general! Best food ever!
When I visit NYC I love Russ and Daughters Salmon on a bagel with onion , capers and cream cheese. This is real comfort food. I get to do it maybe 4X/year. It is fabulous. I worked in Russia and Scandinavia for 10 years and their Smoked Salmon is up there with the best.
As someone who lived near alphabet land for many years, Russ and Daughters was the go to appetizer store, Crown Deli (kosher) was the go to deli (closed nearly 40 years ago and put Katz to shame) and Kossars for bialys.
Growing up on Long Island we always had Jewish appetizing on the weekends and belly lox all week. Fresh bagels on the weekends. As grown-ups we have fresh bagels any time! Greatest🎉
I got there 15 minutes before open and was easily first in line. If I went a second time I would go to the Russ & Daughters Cafe nearby that has seating.
