Rosenwinkel is so great. I would love to hear just a solo guitar record from him. He has such a strong and personal sound and he always seems like he's on. Doesn't he ever just have a bad guitar day?
All music including repetitive pop musics, rock, ballad, and jazz are all sounds and noises that can make us feel amazed and chilled. Just because repetitive music are popular nowadays, there's no reason for you to say that certain musics are better or superior to others. All music are good, but one of the reasons why jazz is so good is definitely because of its diversity in melodies and chords that allows more freedom in expression.
kurt rosenwinkel is a fucking beast. i love the new direction contemporary jazz is taking. its people like kurt, chris potter and dave holland (obviously has been changing the music for a while) who are front men in this developing time. keep listening and keep shedding!
This is the shit!...you can see him coming up with this stuff on the spot...I love the variations he comes up with for the themes he's making up as he goes. SICK
Hey - "The Remedy" was actually recorded with the D'Angelico, and it is only recently that Kurt started performing with the Sadowsky. The quality of the sound on this clip could very well be influenced by the tiny studio/room it was made in (Carnegie Hall Studios in Manhattan).
Audio was added to video in the post production. There were two mics on the Fender mono amp, to give the perception of a narrow stereo field. They are both Neumann TLM 170s.
Hahaha, you party animal ;) Very nice of you posting clips with Kurt that show him in a private situation, extreamly funny. You seem to have a good time there... Take care, best wishes Sandemose/Michael
when i was at berklee there was a video in the library of him doing a seminar there a while back and he was saying how he'd print of fretboard diagrams and draw like lightning bolt shapes on them all up the neck in major scales and learn them - you can see him using this kinda stuff alot too - he's a crazy guy!
Hi! I first thought so too, then I saw him play it in a interview thats uploaded on ArtistShare. You can see it there if you are a participant (which means you bought the album through ArtistShare). He talkes about the record, how it was made and everything, and he plays the first part of Myrons World to demonstrate the chordprogression. That sound my friend, was beyond beatiful. Still on this clip, it sound a little plain. But as I understand it, The Remedy is recorded with the Sadowsky. Best!
Extremely well said! Reading UA-cam comments usually just makes me sad and even angry, but usually on jazz videos there's some great people commenting and I actually enjoy the comments. If I'm watching a famous rock/blues guitarists video there's always arguments about who's best and who's better and if I watch classical music there's always some people fighting over how the piece should be played and who does it better etc... you get the idea
Kurt is amazing and so advanced harmonically ,I wish that young jazz guitar players would not copy his style so much..too many cats try to sound like him these days..
@ranshinahr yeah, you´re so right about that. His biggest contribution is that one realize that you CAN develop such a strong and distinguished voice. He makes me wanna check out what I sound like on my own.. best, Sandemose
like, you know those fretboard diagrams you can print off that are like just an aerial view of the fretboard and you put dots on the frets to like make scale digrams/chords and such, well kurt said he would print them out and like draw out c major scale from one end of the neck to the other and it would look like a lightning bolt, what he really means though is that he does 4 note per string and he'll go from the lowest note to the highest and back again,
Yeah, man...Im so stupid thinking it was recorded with the Sadowsky, since it was made in -06 and all. Just looking at the cover, it becomes very appearant since you see the head of the D`Angelico head. One question Anders, if you have time: On the "On the road with..." there is a sequence called "Somewere in Italy" and its filmed from above, looks sort of like a rehearsal. What guitar is that? Looks like a thinline Telecaster of some sort. Thanks ACT for the info...Best, Sandemose
Aha, never heard of. What do you about them? Tried anyone? I think I remember you from that clinic clip with Kurt in Italy, am I right? Best wishes, Sandemose
You are so damn good ! Do you hear all your voicings or have you done a great deal of precomposition as a base. It seems as though you are composing all voices on the go. If thats it Its freeking amazing. It must be really instense for you.
@miklos379 I think his ex-wife was from Switzerland, professorship in Berlin, better school system healthcare in Europe among other things (from what Ive read in interviews). Best, Sandemose.
@spongey222 I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. It doesn't make you a good player or a bad one. Most guitarists do it for the wide vibrato, especially blues players. The thumb behind the neck technique is mostly to get you to use your pinky. It's violin technique applied to the guitar. Look at Allan Holdsworth, he does the behind the neck technique. Paul Gilbert also perfers his thumb over the neck, yet he is one of the greatest contemporary rock guitarists. So, no harm done.
@ryanlk I'm pretty sure Rosenwinkel, Wayne Krantz or Chris Potter would be incredible on a hip-hop beat. You can see it the way you want, when you can play jazz, you can do anything with music.
At 230 Kurt plays the whole A section to Darn that Dream in G (the chords only) I wonder what other standards lurk in their... He says that a lot of his improvisations come form changes that he steal from standards. He weaves them together in chains or takes every other bar of a standar--but in this case he just plays straight through the a section. In fact he may play the b section after--I didn't take the time to transcribe it yet..but listen for Eb key cetenter Maybe imrov is a mispost?
yeah this guitar sounds pretty good here cause it's made of wood. But since Kurt started endorsing Ovation's "Super PlasmoWinkel" model he's playing plastic guitars exclusively now. Does anybody know whether the strings are still metal?
He tends sometimes to be a tad bland for my taste, but here is a musician of great intelligence, culture and talent. For sure one of the very best guitar players heard in the last ten years - if not the best.
He plays so wonderful and so lyrical...
I''ve watched it five times straight and not showing any signs of stopping. Stuff is fantastic.
this is true genius...i'm light years of being able to process music like this in order to improvise
This is just rediculously beautiful! Kurt is just great!
you can hear some Van Eps in Kurt's playing. Awe inspiring, as usual
Man, that was really sweet! Lot's of influences. From Joe Pass to Pat Metheney. Great melody and chord skill.
Just beautiful!
god. I loved Joe Pass. Now he has been, not replaced, but Kurt brings artistry to an entirely new level.
this dude has such a great sound. Another great jazz guitarist from Philadelphia
wow this guy is on a whole different level!
it sounds like darn that dream
thank you kurt for your music, you always make me feel fine.
beautiful
what a crazy good musician.
très très beau!!
so beautiful and soulful. so melodically engaging
Rosenwinkel is so great. I would love to hear just a solo guitar record from him. He has such a strong and personal sound and he always seems like he's on. Doesn't he ever just have a bad guitar day?
This is such absolute beautiful playing. Its Jazz but when I listen to it I feel blues. Inspirational guy.
man has incredible chord knowledge. thanks for posting this wbgoblog.
Again i must say.... This is AMAZING! It's incredible... everything so clear in your mind/hears. GREAT!

incredible musician!!! i'ts fantastic!!!
Oh-h-h-h man It's killing me...for sure the best jazz guitar and composer for the last decade....I'm sure he haven't say everything yet
I hear some of Darn that Dream in this version around 2:30. Great harmonic sensitivity!
beautiful sound as always
This is the shit!...you can see him coming up with this stuff on the spot...I love the variations he comes up with for the themes he's making up as he goes. SICK

Wonderful!
Very cool that he's with Sadowsky now! Go Roger!
Kurt's amazing as always. Very nice improvisation here.
Bravo!

for me it's up there with some of the best chordal solo's ever played.comparable to pass, wes, etc
Very nice!
awesome!!!

amazing
Kurt is the man!
I had no idea this was around in early UA-cam days.
oh that's a Moffa guitar (from Sicily I believe). Kurt's been trying those also, and really liking a lot of the qualities there as well.
Wonderful! Kurt rockZ! Darn that Dream @ 2:29
nice tone

Awesome.
He is a Master Musician!
@lionsome this is awesome...
Kurt is amazing and so advanced harmonically ,I wish that young jazz guitar players would not copy his style so much..too many cats try to sound like him these days..
not only most-known ;]
fantastic thing! agree
@ranshinahr yeah, you´re so right about that. His biggest contribution is that one realize that you CAN develop such a strong and distinguished voice. He makes me wanna check out what I sound like on my own..
best, Sandemose
man kurt rules. something about the way his fingers look during fast runs reminds me of 'frogger'.
like, you know those fretboard diagrams you can print off

@tubaeli93 I think ... Fender twin reverb ...
i hear darn that dream in there...
I dont know, you probably hear this better than me, but Kurt has recorded this tune, so it might have pop out in the moment :)
John is playing a Brian Moore Custom and a guitar made for him by a private maker now I think. I don't think he has the Sadowsky anymore.
I'd say that was killin', but it's so beautiful and life-affirming, "killin'" isn't the right word ;-)
not Kurt's wife, just an old friend. Kurt rocks.
What guitar is that? New model again? D´Angelico, Moffa, and now this one. Anyone knows?
Best, Sandemose

those chord you unseemingly improvised ,could become like great song ever?
Is the audio of this clip from the Video Camera? or is it from the microphone by the amp? If so, what is the microphone by the amp?
You are so damn good !

this is much better than his last albuns

Maybe imrov is a mispost?
he should do some solo guitar shows, all improvised keith jarrett-style.
Yes. He play playing a Sadowsky semi-hollow.
The truth is he sounds great with any guitar. :-)
@doughboy777 Me too. Except all I see Kurt playing these days is his Vestax D'Angelico and his Moffa Lorraine.
wowee!
wow
yeah I noticed that too
1:01 is norah jones' Don't know why... genius...
1:15 definitely sounds like something familiar!
does anyone know if thats a 7 string and if hes playing in alternative tuning? thanks
Jake Harrell not a 7 string, and he's playing on standard tuning
crazy, thanks man
You're welcome man! I think your confusion comes because he's using .12 gauge strings with a wound third and it looks as if it had a 7th string.
@minor7b5SM Oh man, that's -indeed- a phrase that describes the idiom of jazz!1
yeah this guitar sounds pretty good here cause it's made of wood. But since Kurt started endorsing Ovation's "Super PlasmoWinkel" model he's playing plastic guitars exclusively now. Does anybody know whether the strings are still metal?
how are those sadowsky guitars...sounds really good....?
umm...could you slide the camera over a bit to the left please?
Donno why but 1:01 - 1:30 really reminds me some kind of a christmas carol.. just sounds christmasy
@Tacoguitar now, THATs hard...
Darn that Dream..
holy shit.........
He tends sometimes to be a tad bland for my taste, but here is a musician of great intelligence, culture and talent. For sure one of the very best guitar players heard in the last ten years - if not the best.
he had to have been quoting if not just playing through darn that dream during the middle of it
thats fuckin sweet omg
I heard him say he uses D'addarios 12's
Thats the chords of darn that dream pretty much
Neil Schmitt only for a few bars
@minor7b5SM Omg best comment on this subject... bless you!
did u ever figure it out what is he playing?
Don't forget Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman and Brian Blade! ;-)
I hope its improv
@dougsusername django used it! :)
check out the new album with OJM; the new takes on Zhivago especially are ridiculous.
he uses his thumb! just like hendrix
James Margolis just like almost ever Blues player before ,and rock player since.
Who's saying kurt doesnt hear what he is playing? Can you improvise like this??????????
Kurt is just too damn good for his own good. Makes me want to run out & buy a Sadowsky.
"BICOCA. UN LIBRO DE CUENTAS Y MALAS PULGAS"
